the sunshine does make it better. it's going to be a really nice day. cold to start with temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s. 42 in napa, 41 right now in san jose. as we take a look at our forecast today, it's going to be partly cloudy at times, but also mostly sunny as we go into late morning, a few clouds here and there. but overall we don't have to worry about rain. temperatures will reach into the upper 50s, low 60s, 59 will be the high in dublin and oakland, as well as santa rosa and 57 in san jose. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. we still see activity on high street in oakland, the off ramp dark, we do see a couple of sets of lights. oakland pd might be helping out. we do know that northbound 880 moves smoothly past the high street off ramp and we're trying to find out if chp or oakland pd will tell us what's been going

on with the flares. from the southbound side, you can access it. changes in the tri-valley alameda county, the toll lanes that had not been charging are going to resume charging this morning. northbound still has a closure from overnight road work. back to you. >> thank you, mike. for the first time in our country's history, a former president is facing criminal charges. a manhattan grand jury voted to indict former president donald trump yesterday. >> resources inside the court confirmed the indictment to nbc news. last night supporters rallied outside of mr. trump's mar-a-lago estate. the grand jury's decision is unprecedented, as it will have a lasting impact not just on the country, but on the former president's run for the white house in 2024. the indictment remains sealed. first and foremost, what is mr. trump being charged with? we know the indictment stems

from the hush money scheme during the run up to the 2016 election. >> the grand jury is looking into whether he falsified business records while making payments to adult film star stormy daniels. how is the former president responding? "today in the bay's" emma goss has more on his reaction and what bay area republicans are saying. >> this is a major moment for president trump, a major moment for the two parties, a major moment for the country. >> reporter: mr. trump calling the indictment political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history. for now, the charges he'll face aren't known because the indictment is under seal. the indictment came down from manhattan district attorney alvin bragg, following his investigation into mr. trump's hush money payment to adult film star stormy daniel. bragg looked into how the statement was documented. mr. trump denies claims of a 2006 affair.

republican leaders are coming to mr. trump's defense, including his former vice president, mike pence, now a potential 2024 rival. >> the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the united states on a campaign finance issue is an outrage. >> as for democrats -- >> democrats, of course, on the one hand are gleeful, we might finally have him, but on the other hand, they're fearful. what if this whole thing goes up in smoke. what if he is absolved and not guilty? then how does that look downstream in terms of the other cases? >> the chairman of san francisco's republican party sees the indictment helping to garner sympathy and likely votes for the former president. >> i think california republicans will largely see this for what it is and be sympathetic to the president, including the people who aren't supporters. they're going to see this for what it is and feel like republicans are being targeted.

>> it's clear from mr. trump that this indictment and other investigations he still faces regarding the 2020 election and classified documents will not stop his run in the next presidential election. emma goss for "today in the bay." so what are the next steps for the former president? he'll need to surrender, he's expected to be arraigned tuesday. the secret service is talking with new york authorities about transporting mr. trump to manhattan to face charges. the secret service says its role is transporting and protecting the former president but will not take part in his arrest. if he does not surrender on his own, governor ron desantis says the state of florida won't help with his extradition. mar-a-lago is, of course, in florida. >> democrats are weighing in. former house speaker nancy pelosi tweeting, quote, the grand jury has acted upon the facts and the law. no one is above the law. everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence. hopefully the former president will peacefully respect the

system which grants him that right, end quote. and legal experts everywhere also weighing in. we spoke with a former federal prosecutor about what the arraignment for the former president will look like, as well as the historian about what this indictment means for our democracy. >> what's going to happen at the arraignment is that he will be advised of the charges and that indictment is going to be unsealed probably at that time or with court permission, with the judge's permission, sooner, so that they can look at security and matters like that. he'll be advised of the charges, enter a plea, guilty or not guilty. he'll be advised of his constitutional rights. and the court will set court dates in addition to bail conditions. >> a democracy is successful when a leader, one of the most powerful people in the nation's history, can be held accountable

in focus today, we're going to get data on personal income and spending. the fed's favorite inflation gauge and consumer sentiment. elon musk is reported by planning to visit china, we saw tim cook there within the last couple of weeks. musk possibly could visit as soon as next month. reuters says musk is seeking a meeting with the country's premiere, china is tesla's second largest market after the united states and the company's plant in shanghai is its largest production hub. this would be the first time musk has visited china since the pandemic began and chinese president xi jingping secured a third term. while tesla has been cutting prices on some models, ford is hiking the base price of its most popular f-150 lightning electric pickup truck for the fourth time since it started rolling off the assembly line a year ago. it will set you back $59,974,

happy friday to you. right now the time is 4:48. it is a chilly start, but we are now all clear, we don't have to worry about rain, as you get ready to step out the door. it's 37 in mountain view and also just as cold in san martin. it's 39 in santa rosa and 42 in san rafael. as you're heading out the door in the south county, it's going to be mostly clear and temperatures stay cold, so you do have to blast the heater in the car on your way to work this morning. and then as we go into today, we're going to start to see more sunshine, slowly warming temperatures. but all of this, as we take a look at our high temperatures, is well below what's normal for the last day of march.

and it's going to be a while before we warm up, even going into the weekend. looks much better tomorrow, with highs in the mid-60s in the south bay, but still in the upper 50s in the north bay, and then for sunday we all get a cooldown, we're back in the mid to upper 50s once again. so let's talk about what's going to happen in the north bay on saturday, and why we'll all cool off on sunday. we're going to see a system passing by that could skirt the north bay with spotty showers, but we're also going to start to see cold air coming back in for the end of the weekend into early next week. it's still looking pretty active across the region, but for us a lot of the rain dries up before it gets here. and we're looking farther down the line to see when we could warm up here, and it looks like next weekend is looking so much better, with highs in the low 70s for some of our inland areas, and we just have to make it through these next few days with these cold temperatures that will continue, and at times

some gusty winds as well. mike, you're seeing crews working on the golden gate bridge. >> they just have to get through the next few minutes, maybe an hour or so. the cones have to be picked up. i did see one truck sort of poised and there's flashing lights. they are getting ready to move those cones from the northbound side, southbound side coming out of the north bay. we may see slowing there. flares here continue blocking the high street off ramp for northbound 880. there's activity on the off ramp itself but the freeway is moving very smoothly. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 4:50 right now. gwyneth paltrow has won her case. the jury reached a verdict yesterday. back in 2016, paltrow collided with a utah man while skiing in park city. three years later, he sued her. the skier, terry sanderson, a retired optometrist, accused paltrow of crashing into him and
