good morning. it is saturday, april 1st. a brand-new month as we take this live look outside toward san francisco and the bay bridge across the bay. a beautiful way to start our first morning of april. it is very chilly out there, and we appreciate your starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. i could not run to my car fast enough. it said 39 when igot in this morning. >> very chilly. also, i don't know how we've made it to the fourth month of the year already, but here we are. nice to greet you this morning, for those of you waking up with

us. live look over san jose right now. another chilly spot for you there in the low 40s. but we will be seeing some sunshine today, and i'll get to that in a second. other places down here in the south bay, san martin, 39 degrees. 45 as we make our way into san mateo. very chilly 36 degrees in sonoma right now. places running anywhere from two to five degrees cooler than what we started off our friday with in parts of the north bay. coming up in my full forecast, don't go anywhere, because, yes, there is sunshine in store for the first day of april, but also the chance for spotty showers this afternoon. i'll tell you where. i do want to wrap your attention right here, right there. temperatures warming up. i'll tell you in the extended outlook how high the temperatures will go. for now, back to you. >> i like the sound of that. thanks. happening today, baseball fans are waiting to hear from los angeles angels of anaheim player anthony rendon after a viral video shows him getting into an altercation with an oakland a's fan.

the third baseman claims that the fan taunted him. all of this unfolded at the season opener on thursday in oakland. "today in the bay" has reaction from fans and major league baseball. >> reporter: it happened just after thursday night's game. the angels lost to the a's at the coliseum 2-1, when the angels' anthony rendon said this to an a's fan. >> yeah, you did. >> yeah, [ bleep ]. >> reporter: then he takes a swing but doesn't make contact with the fan. >> physically putting his hands on that fan is way over the line. >> reporter: die-hard a's fans like stephanie and tracy were in disbelief over the action. both men involved should face consequences. >> players are humans, and heckling is part of the territory. you know, there is a line that shouldn't be crossed. >> reporter: major league baseball said friday that the organization is looking into what happened.

rendon could face a fine or even suspension. oakland police confirmed they saw the video and are actively investigating this as a potential battery. legal experts say based on the video, rendon could be charged with a crime if the fan chooses to press charges. unless rendon is found to have been acting in self-defense. >> fans are not supposed to -- not allowed to treat the athletes like they're animals in a zoo. i think the a's will probably beef up their security in that area. >> reporter: dave stewart, an nbc bay area sports analyst and former pitcher for the a's from 1986 to 1992, had endured his share of heckling from fans of the opposing team. he hopes this serves as a teachable moment for baseball fans, about what is appropriate and what is not. >> you have to look at the fact that they lost a baseball game that they were winning going into the late innings. he didn't have a good day personally as a player.

there's emotions that are flaring after a game. >> reporter: "today in the bay." new this morning, parts of north first street in san jose remain closed this morning following this two-alarm fire. it was reported around 2:00 this morning at an abandoned mcdonald's building across the street from the hyatt house hotel. parts of the roof collapsed. you can see the flames and smoke pouring from the building. firefighters tell us several people were evacuated from the hotel but are now back. no one was hurt. authorities are investigating how the fire ignited in that abandoned building. this morning, we are following the trail of destruction through the south and the midwest, where at least ten people are dead following major storms. in little rock, a tornado touched down, killing at least three people and injuring dozens more. this is video of the twister

barrelling through the arkansas capital city last night. above. homes completely destroyed. the national weather service says tornadoes were reported across arkansas, illinois, and iowa. in belvedere, illinois, northwest of chicago, one person died when a roof collapsed during a concert. dozens of others were hurt. this severe weather comes a week after tornadoes hit mississippi, alabama, killing 26 people and causing widespread damage. we are learning more about the charges against former president donald trump after he was indicted on thursday. trump will become the first former u.s. president to face criminal charges. nbc news has learned trump faces about 30 charges related to a hush money payment case, and the "associated press" is reporting at least one of those charges is a felony. the exact charges against the former president will not be

released until he appears in court on tuesday. the indictment is not stopping the former president's campaign ahead of the 2024 election. trump says his campaign raised more than $4 million in the 24 hours following the indictment. a quarter of those donations came from first-time donors. we will continue to follow the latest on the indictment as we wait for trump to surrender on tuesday. be sure to go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the trump indicted link at the top of our home page. back here locally, the woman accused of running an illegal international drug operation while working for the san jose police union made her first court appearance in federal court yesterday. joanne segovia surrendered yesterday morning. the 20-year civilian executive director of the san jose police officers association is accused of importing and selling drugs, including fentanyl, from october

2015 to january of this year. court documents show at least 61 shipments were made to her bay area home from india, china, and other foreign countries, and then shipped out to dealers in other states. court documents also reveal the 64-year-old sometimes used her police union office computer to manage the transactions. >> whether it's careless or, you know, as a result of she's high when she's doing it, it's crazy. either way, it's crazy for somebody in law enforcement or connected to law enforcement to use law enforcement services to commit a federal crime. >> segovia was released without bond and will return to court on april 28th. there is new video of a san mateo woman missing in mexico. this is a story we first told you about thursday afternoon. take a look if you can. the woman you see walking there is suspected to be monica de

leon barba. this video is from a surveillance camera in mexico back in november. it's the last footage we have before she vanished. the fbi believes barba was kidnapped while walking to the gym. it is offering a $40,000 reward in hopes of finding her. her family is urging california lawmakers to help in the search. a stunner for a shop owner in san francisco's chinatown. two break-ins only minutes apart. "today in the bay's" gia vang was in the city with the business owner who says thieves are forcing her to make some difficult decisions. >> reporter: surveillance video shows around 4:00 a.m. thursday, a woman slipped in through the glass door that had been shattered. once in -- >> three people, one lady come in and took the tips, the cash register money, and then left.

>> reporter: that's nancy, the owner of the boba tea shop. >> i said, that's not right. >> reporter: that is more cash and tablets that were missing. ten minutes later, another person comes in and goes, again, straight for the cash register, though this time, it was empty. security video shows the second thief, a man, makes his way upstairs. nancy doesn't leave cash out overnight, but extenuating circumstances that day meant she didn't lock it all up. about $500 total was stolen between the two thieves, a lot for the small business. while she filed a police report, she didn't file an insurance claim because there is a deductible, and she worries her rate would increase. >> that's how i felt yesterday, so down. do i report or not? you don't report, then you have to eat all this. >> reporter: this happened to nancy in august. her gift shop also in chinatown was broken into. that time, she lost around

$4,000. nancy says she's seen a slight improvement when it comes to police control but urges support from the public. >> come to chinatown to help us out. >> reporter: and city leaders. >> it's up to the politicians. you can help us. i don't know what to say. i don't know how people can help us, but give us a peaceful and safe environment so we can survive. >> reporter: we reached out to the supervisor's office for comment but didn't hear back. gia vang, "today in the bay." happening this weekend, bart is doing major track work on its busiest line. the yellow line that runs from antioch to sfo. crews are doing the work between aringa and rock ridge. free buses will replace service between the two stations. bart says riders can expect delays of about 30 minutes in that area. this weekend is the first of five weekends throughout june for the track work. bart says it is replacing and updating old equipment. at 7:11, minimum wage is

coming up in a few minutes. first, new this morning, pope francis is back at the vatican after being discharged from the hospital where he stayed three nights. the pope was admitted to the hospital earlier this week for breathing issues, and doctors say they treated him for bronchitis. hospital staff say the pope shared a dinner with them before he was released. it remains unclear how involved the pope will be in tomorrow's palm sunday mass at st. peter's square. tomorrow marks the beginning of holy week for catholics. back here in the u.s., a tennessee judge has issued a temporary restraining order on the state's drag band just hours before it was set to take effect. the judge cited constitutional protections of freedom of speech. the first of its kind law bans adult cabaret entertainment on public property or where it

could be viewed by a minor. it's a misdemeanor on the first offense, the second is a felony. 14 other u.s. states have similar drag show ban bills in progress. back locally, happening tonight, one south bay city is holding a benefit concert to help raise funds for the earthquake victims affected in turkey and syria. you may recall it was a 7.8 earthquake that hit can town tri -- the country. 54,000 people died during the earthquake and the aftershock. the concert will be tonight at the church of the redeemer at 6:00 p.m. organizers are asking for a $20 donation. all funds will be given to the humanitarian teams on the ground in syria and turkey. also happening tonight, legendary san jose band del norte will take the stage at s.a.p. center. if that's not exciting enough, they have a touching contribution for a hard-hit

community. ♪♪ >> a portion of the proceeds from tonight's show are set to be donated to groups that help farm workers across california. this comes after the mass shooting earlier this year in half moon bay that left seven farm workers dead and recent floods that left catastrophic damage across california farmlands like this scene. the groups receiving the money will put it toward mental health care, housing and food. happening today, if you work in some parts of san mateo county, you might start seeing a boost in your paycheck. the minimum wage rises to $16.50. that is one dollar higher than california's minimum wage. regulators announced the decision to increase the minimum wage in november of last year. in 2024, the minimum wage will be determined by a formula that

will take into account factors like the consumer price index. a boy scout troop will take a glimpse into the past. boy scout troop 88 is digging a time capsule that was buried in san francisco. members of the same troop buried the copper box back in 1933. it was then to commemorate the first ever easter service held at sunrise at the mount davidson craw. now, they're finally opening it up. it'll be at 11:00 a.m. following the unearthing, a new time capsule will be placed in the same spot for the next 100 years. if you're looking to go outside and enjoy this sunny weekend, mike has some ideas for you in the weekend calendar. >> good morning, kira. happy new month. happy new year. we're going to start with the

sneakers, street wear, vintage clothing. if you want the levi's, go across the street. it's a levi's stadium joke. seriously, i'll help you find your way across the maps weekday mornings here on "today in the bay." >> oh, always with the dad jokes. thanks, mike. time to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. i kind of loathe april fools' day because i'm looking behind my back, but this weather is no joke. it is sunny. it is beautiful. it is cold. >> it is cold, and there's going to be a little bit of cloud cover as we go throughout the day. kira, otherwise, we are staying dry down in gilroy. good morning to you. 39 degrees out there at this hour. then, look at that, by your lunchtime on into the afternoon, we'll be in the 60s with lots of sunshine. it's the weekend, of course. i hear there's a home game today over on in oakland for the a's and the angels. temperatures will be in the

upper 50s with a little bit of a wind. make sure that you do wear that sunscreen because when it is cloudy out there, there is also a chance to get a little more sunburn on your skin. what's going on around the bay area? we are staying dry for the most part, but there are some storm systems in parts of northern california and up into states like oregon and in washington. what's this going to go as we go throughout the day? it's going to push into the bay area. let's give a little bit of an hour by hour outlook on this rain, light fog and that drizzle. as we go through the afternoon, most of the rain chances, i believe, will stay to the north. places around santa rosa, out onto the coastline, around bodega bay. the rest of us will see cloud cover increasing for our saturday afternoon plans. day time highs will be mild, especially down in the south bay. 66 forecasted in san jose. 59 in san francisco. we've got 62 for you out in

concord. things will start to change as we go into the day tomorrow and into next week with this low dropping a little farther south. what that's going to do, again, spotty showers for sunday, very trace amounts. 0.01 of an inch, if that tells you anything. also, pick up the wind speeds and bring down the cold ah temperatures. we'll be talking about the wind speeds into sunday afternoon. already between 15 to 20 mile an hour winds, increasing as we go into monday. look at the purples out in the coastline and on the ridges of the santa cruz mountains. anywhere from 30, 35, 40 mile an hour winds. going to feel a little bit gusty as we go through this dry weekend, kira. overall, staying dry. those showers staying away from the bay area. as we go into the extended outlook, look at next weekend, we are jumping into the spring temperatures, in the upper 60s, nearing some 70s. great news, finally degree out from all of those storms. oh, my goodness.

conference later today. all of this unfolding at the season opener on thursday in oakland. take a look. >> what'd you say? call me a [ bleep ]. yeah, you did. yeah, [ bleep ]. >> calm down. >> both the angels and the athletics declined to comment on that video. the oakland police department said the fan involved has not come forward to press charges against rendon. however, since there is video of the incident, there are actively investigating. beginning today, you might have to wait longer for police to respond to non-emergency calls if you live in berkeley. "today in the bay's" bob riddell joins us to explain, berkeley police must reduce the number of officers on patrol. >> good morning, kira. the barkley police department is down officers. a number are offered injury, leave. they have plenty of openings,

but right now, they're having trouble finding people to fill those positions. earlier this week, in a memo to the mayor and city council, the city manager announced the police department would have to go from a 16-beat to 14-beat configuration. in other words, fewer officers on the street because the department says it is consistently understaffed. minimum patrol staffing is not the same as having all the beats filled, according to the police department in a statement that reads, in part, we have a minimum staffing number for each patrol team. if a team falls short of the minimum staffing number because of sick calls, things like that, then it is filled with overtime. during daytime hours, the department has officers working other assignments such as the bike unit. officers can assist with patrol and fill a beat, as well. it varies. berkeley scanner, a news website run by an independent journalist, reports that normally there's 150 officers, and it is down by 30 officers due to, as i mentioned, leave, injuries, other issues. the department is authorized to

thursday. trump will become the first former u.s. president to face criminal charges. the historic indictment already is showing the potential to shake up the race for the white house. nbc's peter alexander has that part of the story. >> reporter: indictment. now, the political fallout. president biden deliberately avoiding the topic. >> i'm not going to talk about that. >> reporter: republicans are slamming it as a democratic d.a. tried to take out president biden's top political opponent with a bogus legal case. like this reaction from former trump attorney general turned fierce trump critic, bill barr. >> it's the archetype abuse of the prosecutorial function to engage in a political hit job. it's a disgrace. >> reporter: some of mr. trump's biggest defenders, those expected to challenge him for the gop nomination. >> the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the united states on a campaign

finance issue is outrageous. >> reporter: mr. trump's potential top rival, florida governor ron desantis, blasted the indictment as un-american and vowed his state will not assist in the extradition. even though the former president plans to surrender voluntarily to new york authorities. former president trump, his lawyer says, was shocked by his indictment but is ready to fight. quickly condemning the d.a.'s move as political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history. today, lashing out at the new york city judge expected to preside over his arraignment. claiming, quote, the judge hates me. his daughter ivanka offering a brief statement in support. i love my father, and i love my country. today, i am pained for both. top democrats are applauding the d.a.'s move. >> this is an affirmation of the fact that no one should be above the law. we all are held to account. this is someone who had escaped accountability now for years and

years. >> reporter: will trump has been reaching out to his most vocal republican allies in congress, like lindsey graham. >> this is turning the rule of law upside down to destroy a man, donald j. trump, who the left fears. do not let them get away with this. >> reporter: the former president's supporters are look to capitalize on the yet to be announced charges. hocking t-shirts online to raise campaign money. for any other candidate, an indictment would almost certainly be the end of the line, but mr. trump's allies insist this move by the democratic prosecutor is rallying republicans and will cement his front-runner status. >> peter alexander for us this morning. back here locally, a shocking incident for visitors to the bay area who were targeted twice in the same parking lot, in the same day. earlier this month, shin kim and his wife were visiting the bay area from georgia. kim is a cal grad who wanted to show his wife around. one of the first places they

stopped was the in-n-out near the airport. thieves broke into their rental van and s> sadly, this story is not unusual. in the adjacent parking lot, fast food chain raising cane's closed its dining room because of the break-ins.

good morning. it's 7:43. welcome back to "today in the

bay." we've made it to april. hey, we're going to start to see a lot of festivals pop up around the bay area. this one in milpitas today. the omg family festival going on from 10:00 to 5:00. if you are heading up there, dry, no rain in the way of your plans out there. the afternoon is going to be a gorgeous day to enjoy. also, bring a hat and maybe layer on sunscreen, as we'll see the overcast skies that could lead to a little bit of a sunburn. maybe your plans take you to napa. 39 degrees. i would bring a jacket. it is going to be chilly out there with a mix of some sun and clouds. now, another place that's also very chilly but a good day to travel up there with lake tahoe, a beautiful, live picture with the sunrise right now. conditions are good for today, but they will start changing for tomorrow on into monday because of the storms that are happening around the bay area and around the sierra. we'll take it hour by hour, various traces of sprinkles that

could happen around parts of the north bay, while the cloud coverage blankets the rest of us. as we go to sunday morning, very early, maybe some offshore showers, as well, but look at that, staying mostly dry for the most part. we're welcoming april on a more dry pattern here. as we go on into the afternoon on sunday, another chance for some sprinkles or two around point reyes, inland into santa rosa, and it could pass by half moon bay and the santa cruz mountains. traces amounts, 0.01 inch if we're lucky to squeeze that much out of there. behind this storm, making its exit, pushing through the bay area, we'll see gusty winds. if you have anything on the patio you put out in the last couple days, maybe to dry out, the plants to soak up sunshine, might want to bring them in. we're looking at gusts picking up sunday afternoon on into monday. i think this will be one of the gustier days we see, out along the coastline where you see the areas of purple, around the marin county shoreline, down

through half moon bay, pacifica, and the mountains, as well. inland, livermore, san jose, 25 to 30-mile-per-hour winds or more as we go into the coastline. ahead, after we get through this rough patch through the beginning of the week with the winds, the cold temperatures, look how much sunshine we have on the way for next weekend, kira. temperatures will start to feel average in the low 70s as we go on into next weekend, of course. we do have a little bit of work to get through here with the wind and those chilly starts. overall, i'm excited. we'll be here to tell you all about it once we see the warmup. low 70s, can't wait. >> fingers crossed. >> 7:46 right now. did you see it? it was nothing but threes for the splash brothers. leading to the warriors' win. coming up on "today in the bay," we'll tell you about the record they broke in last night's game against the spurs.

viral video showed him getting into an altercation with an oakland a's fan. the third baseman is expected to speak to fans today, and we are expecting that to happen at a press conference. take a look at that video. >> what'd you say? you called me a [ bleep ]. yeah, you did. yeah, [ bleep ]. >> calm down. >> both the angels and the athletics declined to comment on the video. the oakland police department says that the fan involved has not come forward to file charges against rendon. however, since opd has video of the incident, they are actively investigating. a shop in san francisco's chinatown got hit by thieves not once but twice in the same day, and it is forcing the shop owner, who has been robbed before at a different location, to make a difficult decision.

surveillance video shows that around 4:00 a.m. thursday, a woman slips into the tea shop through the glass door that had been shattered. you can see her stealing cash from the tip jar and emptying the cash register. ten minutes later, this man is coming in, as well. he goes upstairs to steal more cash and tablets. the owner, nancy, says about $500 total was stolen between the two. while she did file a police report, she says she did not file an insurance claim because she worries her rates will increase. >> that's how i feel yesterday, was slow down. report insurance or not? i decided not to report. then you have to eat all this. >> back in august, nancy's other store, asia star fantasy, a gift shop also in chinatown, was broken into. that time, she lost about

$4,000. happening today, bart is replacing and updating old equipment on its busiest line, the yellow line that runs from antioch to sfo. crews are doing work between arinda and rock ridge. they'll have free buses replacing bart service between those two stations. bart tells us riders can expect delays of about 30 minutes. this weekend is the first of five weekends through june for this track work. cinthia has one last check of the forecast before we go. >> today is going to be a little bit of a mix of sun and clouds, kira, then the winds will pick up as we go through the afternoon on sunday on into monday, with gustier winds out along the coastline. make sure that you are protecting anything that could roll around in the wind. inland, tuesday, cold temperatures, but then look at that. wednesday through friday, we are seeing a little bit of a warmup, finally, going to start feeling like spring around here.
