welcome back. i want to update this crash. i'm happy to tell you the crash southbound 680 around 237 had all lanes blocked, and then it's just cleared. cleared from the roadway and in a couple of seconds should clear from the chp report. there's no activity anymore and no slowing at the scene. we still have a disabled vehicle blocking your right lane traveling west coming across the peninsula at the high-rise for the san mateo bridge. not a lot of slowing but the flares are out. they need a tow truck and chp to arrive. we'll watch that. we have an issue, a little slowing on the berkeley curve but i didn't see a problem there approaching the bay bridge. top of the screen. what we have is continued road work, all week from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., so we should get ready to clear. that's from a mudslide that happened during the storms. the mudslide caused damage to the roadway and they've got to clean that up. at least they get a chance to do that right now.

>> it's been pretty dry, but also very chilly. and it doesn't yet at all feel like we're in the beginning of april. yesterday we had the winds really kicking up, also some gusty winds moving through antioch. but the wind will still be breezy but just not as gusty as yesterday. so we're making some progress. but we're only going to be in the upper 30s and low 40s for the next few hours, and then as we go into later this morning, it's still going to be chilly, but it will be sunny. so don't forget the sunglasses and the jacket. here is a look at high temperatures, still about 5 to 8 degrees cooler compared to what's normal for this time of year. so it's going to be another chilly day and, once again, mostly clear with sunshine. tomorrow it's starting to feel a little bit better, with some mid-60s for san jose, but mostly low 60s as you move over toward dublin, as well as martinez. 62 in napa. santa rosa reaching 62 degrees.
4:51 am
then a little bit cooler on thursday, with the highs back in the upper 50s once again. so we're still seeing that cold air kind of pour into the bay area, but then by friday we'll see it increase in cloud cover and even a chance of some scattered showers. the north bay will have the highest chance of showers, and still lingering into saturday morning, but the rest of the weekend is dry and then our temperatures start to ramp up. but, unfortunately, the warm weather doesn't last long. there will be another storm system dropping in that's also going to cause our temperatures to dip back down. so take a look at palo alto in the next ten days, cool for today and tomorrow, saturday is going to be mild as the sky gradually clears. we have upper 60s in our sunday and monday forecast, and then once again back down as the next storm system comes in. we're looking at showers every few days as our temperatures reach into the mid to upper 60s and then low 70s for the start
4:52 am
of next week. san francisco is also going to see rain chances increasing going into friday and saturday morning. and now as we take a look at our climate in crisis, we have a slowly unfolding natural disaster in the central valley, about halfway between fresno and bakersfield, just east of i-5 in the town of cocoran. people have worked for a century to make california's basin into a food grower's paradise. but now the landscape looks more like the pacific ocean as more than 30 square miles is now under water, after all of the atmospheric river storms pummeled the area and saturated the soil in the basin. floods have damaged towns and deluged farms, and they have become to refill what was a sprawling lake. floods have pitted property owners against one another and raised tensions over how to manage the flows, which have damaged hundreds of structures,
4:53 am
and more water is on the way. a slow burning crisis will play out as a historic snowpack looms in the mountains above the basin, and as it melts it is likely to put downstream communities through months of torment. the flooding, which follows several years of extreme drought, as we know, is another example of weather whiplash due to the influence of climate change, which can make extremes more intense and more frequent. the reforming tulare lake which was drained for farming a century ago, could remain in the landscape for years, disrupting growers in a region that produces a significant portion of the nation's supply of almonds, pistachios, milk and fruit. this will have a ripple effect on the nation's food supply and leave farmworkers without income for an undetermined amount of time. we will continue to follow the impacts on our website, nbcbayarea.com, on our climate in crisis page. >> thank you very much, kari.
