6:01 am
day. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the morning commute with mike in a moment. but what about the skies? let's check the forecast now with kari. >> it's nice to have sunshine around the bay area, and it's also still very chilly, but eventually we're going to start to see warmer weather in the forecast on down the line. it's still going to be cold today as we take a live look in san jose, waiting for the sun to come over the hills. let's head to san leandro, 38 degrees. yes, it's cold, it feels like winter and it's been breezy. as we go into today, temperatures reaching into the mid-50s, reaching the upper 50s for later today. we'll be watching that warm-up in the forecast. mike, you have a crash you're tracking. >> we heard about the crash in oakland, slowing on southbound 880. if you're entering the freeway going south on 880, leaving alameda, you can't get on there at fruitvale or park because you'll go into the backup.
6:02 am
head south and then cross at high street. then everything is clear toward hayward. eastbound 580 a great option. hopefully that will clear quickly. not any major injuries, but there is a big dump truck involved in the crash. the backup is at the bay bridge, slow across the span itself. coming across from the north bay, you're doing fine. back to you. >> thanks so much. we are just about four hours away from donald trump making history, as the first former president to face criminal charges. this is for his alleged role in a hush money scheme and cover-up involving adult film star stormy daniels ahead of the 2016 election. daniels and others have said she was paid to keep quiet about the alleged affair but trump says that never happened. >> moderator of nbc's "meet the press," chuck todd, joins us live from washington, d.c. good morning. thanks for joining us. so this is history today. the first time a former
6:03 am
president will stand before a judge facing criminal charges. what can we expect? >> well, it will be anything but ordinary, that's for sure. i think the question i have watching all of this today is how much -- we know behind-the-scenes the former president doesn't like any of this, he's nervous about how this is going to look, he doesn't want to be seen in handcuffs, he doesn't want the, quote, unquote, humiliating part of the stuff to be broadcast. at the same time, he wants to show strength and he wants to show that this doesn't bother him because he did nothing wrong, and so the more he can show that, the more perhaps his supporters will believe what he's saying here. so, look, i'll be surprised if he somehow shrinks from this moment. i think he wants to show
6:04 am
bravado. but i do think this is a pivotal moment in that it pierces a veneer that he had worked so hard for 40 years to keep from being pierced, and for the longest time he has bobbed and weaved his way from the law and for the first time the law found him. >> we have to ask you while we have you here, talk about the impact this could have on the upcoming presidential election. there are a lot of reports that trump has seen campaign cash being donated after all of this. >> well, look, i think the trump folks want this to be seen as a moment of strength for them and to show, look, they've been broadcasting, they've done their own internal polling, shared wit the media, they've talked about how much money they've raised because they want his opponents to think, hey, don't go here. you can hit him on a lot of stuff, but if you hit him on legal stuff, it will backfire on you. so, look, i think short-term
6:05 am
it's clear this is benefiting him. i just don't see how long-term this does. and any voter, any voter he lost in 2020, how is it that this gets them back? >> right. >> how does he get them back with this? it doesn't make sense. >> well, and there are certainly concerns over protests as well. i know the security situation in new york is very, very tight, the mayor coming out to speak. they're ready. >> they are. i mean, look, you have to take it seriously because of what happened on january 6th. you can't not take the threat of protests and violence seriously. but it looks like one of the things we've learned is that the more fortified you are, the more likely that some of these protesters will stand down. >> of course, this is something that we will be watching throughout the day. chuck todd, thank you so much. >> you've got it. >> be sure to stay with us on
6:06 am
nbc bay area throughout the day. the "today" show is going to have live coverage at 7:00 after "today in the bay." and then nbc news will have a special report once the hearing gets under way later today. new this morning, students at montgomery high school in santa rosa will have to make up days missed following the deadly stabbing of a student on campus. according to the press democrat, the superintendent says students must attend classes april 14th and may 19th. they were previously designated as staff instructional days. last month a deadly stabbing took place at montgomery high, a fight broke out inside a classroom. police say a freshman stabbed two juniors. one of the students died from his injuries. 6:06 right now, and this morning the family of a bay area missing woman in mexico pleading for help. 6:07 am
>> reporter: unfortunately, we do not know of any leads as of yet, at least the fbi has not announced any. good morning, marcus and laura. the fbi has announced a $40,000 reward for any information that leads to the discovery of monica delee on-barbara, a 29-year-old mexican american woman from san mateo, who was kidnapped in mexico this past november. we spoke with her mother and brother again last night. her brother tells us security camera footage shows several cars pulling up alongside her when she was visiting in jalisco, mexico. the video shows the people in the car speeding off with her. monica's family says the past four months have been tortuous. the brother says they've been working with the fbi since day one, but unfortunately are getting nowhere. >> i know there's a lot of good investigators and agents that are on our side, on our team, giving it their all to help my

try to go stay warm. as we go into the wen, it will feel a lot more comfortable. let's take a live look outside in san rafael, a clear start and also very chilly. if you've been dealing with the pollen, the allergies, it's pretty high. we're dealing with a lot of grass pollen, ash, alder and juniper trees really in bloom at this point, and you probably see the yellow coating on your vehicle. so you may be looking for a time to go to the car wash. we're just enjoying it right now and our temperatures are staying cool. if you want to go out for a hike today u you're looking for some activities to do with the kids on spring break, you do need the sunscreen and a jacket, as well as the sunglasses today for a hike in the south bay. our temperatures only make it into the upper 50s. that's what we're seeing around the bay area. it will be just a little bit warmer tomorrow, with some low 60s, but then we go right back down on thursday with more clouds moving in. we'll be getting ready for some

rain on friday. so here's how it looks as we head through the end of the week, a storm system will be approaching that will bring more snow for the sierra, and for the bay area, rain off and on throughout the day on friday, tapering off on saturday. shortly after, the high pressure builds and our temperatures ramp up. but it doesn't last long. we'll see another dive of some winter-like temperatures by the middle of next week. take a look at our ten-day temperature trend, cold today with upper 50s, mid-60s for the rest of the week. look at easter sunday, 73 degrees. but then we're back to winter by the end of next week. so we just get a little taste of spring for the weekend, perfect for your easter outfit. we'll reach up to about 70 degrees and 73 on monday. mike, now you're starting to see delays through the east bay. >> some are predictable like the bay bridge and the backup. this may be a little lighter because of the very serious

6:25 am
>> what goes into creating those chocolate easter eggs? "today in the bay"'s pete suratos got a behind the scenes look at see's candy headquarters in south san francisco. >> reporter: the aroma of chocolate fills the air at see's candies headquarters in san francisco, a tough assignment for a guy like myself not doing a great job of abiding by a certain new year's resolution. however, the assignment ahead for factory workers on this day was to produce over 100,000 easter eggs. as for the entire easter season, that number is close to 4 million. >> easter is a complicated season because we have over 30 varieties of easter eggs, and most of them are hand formed. >> reporter: bob mcintyre, the senior operations manager for the company, provided a firsthand look at how this complicated process comes together. the magic happens in the enrobing room where the candy is coated with chocolate. >> we have our 1.7 ounce divinity egg. this is a nougat and we coat it

6:31 am
we want to start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect. starting out cold. >> it's been so cold lately and we've been looking forward to a warm-up. we do have another cold day and it's also clear as we take a live look outside in san jose. it's going to be mostly sunny today, but also only reaching into the upper 50s, which is about the way it was yesterday. it just won't be as windy. so we are going to have another day that's about 5 to 8 degrees lower than we typically see for early april, eventually we'll make some progress toward it finally feeling like spring. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you're seeing two spots that are unexpectedly slow. >> yeah, the san mateo bridge westbound, just a few minutes ago, saw flashing lights toward the peak of the high-rise, i believe that's where there's a disabled vehicle.
6:32 am
slower drive is starting to build back toward the flat section where we saw the live camera. the build coming out of hayward, so that may be an issue. dumbarton bridge is a better drive. 880 looks like a better drive with the speed sensors approaching high street just past fruitvale. they may have cleared the disabled or the mini crash with the dump truck just about high street itself. just south of the crash, traffic moves smoothly. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:31 right now. donald trump today becomes the first former president ever to be charged with a crime. scott mcgrew joins us. scott, the court system has been updating us all morning long what we can expect. >> right, sending information into the newsroom so we can bring it to people. we know the judge is going to allow five still photographers into the courtroom after trump enters, but before the charges are read. they will have to leave when the court process gets under way. but the judge says he's going to
6:33 am
allow several minutes for photographs, so you can kind of picture that scene in your head, very small courtroom, five photographers taking picture after picture as trump stands or sits at the defense table. we have live cameras set up all over lower manhattan, full coverage absolutely ready to go. this is something we know how to do well and nbc plans special coverage starting at 10:00 a.m. the former president will not be handcuffed and will not wait for his processing inside a jail cell. that's normal procedure, but he will not go through that. the secret service will be with him at all times. he will be fingerprinted, but it's not clear, still, if there will be a mug shot. he'll then have the hearing, the public will learn what the charges are, if the indictment has not been unsealed earlier. i do want to make sure everyone understands, this is a local prosecution. president biden, the justice department, federal law enforcement, the fbi have nothing to do with this case. biden has been avoiding talking
6:34 am
about the entire subject. for all the opinions that people have about this case, remember, we don't know what the indictment says. >> exactly. it's all sealed right now. >> we'll find out pretty soon. >> the courthouse itself in lower manhattan has quite a history. >> it has a long history. john lemon has taken there on marijuana possession, martha stewart convicted of insider trading in that courthouse, harvey weinstein and the horrible case. >> a lot of big cases. >> actually, the biggest, the most notable, as you bring it up, is central park five, some of our younger viewers won't remember this. back in the late 80s, a group of minority teenagers were arrested and convicted of this brutal attack of a jogger. >> central park jogger. >> yeah, donald trump at the time called for those teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 16 to be executed. he took out a full page ad in the newspaper calling for their execution. it turns out the central park
6:35 am
five were innocent. they were cleared by dna evidence, exonerated. dn approved it was someone else. but that whole process happened in that very same courthouse. >> wow, a lot playing out today. thank you very much, scott. >> and we will continue to monitor the latest on president trump's indictment both on air and online. live coverage continues ahead on the "today" show at 7:00 this morning. they have a team of reporters and analysts ready to cover this historic day. nbc news will have a special report ahead of the former president's arrival at the courthouse later this morning. you'll be able to watch that on air right here on nbc bay area, and, of course, also online. it is 6:35 right now. this morning we have breaking news for you that will thrill soccer fans. women's professional soccer is coming to the bay area. and we do have exclusive details that will be revealed later today. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us live with
6:36 am
one of the founders who has been pushing for such a long time to get this to be a reality, right, kris? >> reporter: she's been pushing for years and she's had to keep her lips sealed for the last couple of months because she knew we had the bid, we just couldn't say anything about it. let me show you the details. the announcement is going to be made today, the national women's soccer league is awarding the next expansion team to the bay area. it will be the 14th team in the national women's soccer league. the first match is coming up soon, they hope to take the pitch in 2024. this is the 11th season for the women's league. we have aly wagner here, a founder, we know you as an olympian, as a college star, as a broadcaster. this has to be super exciting. >> you can talk about all of those pathways that i guess led me here, the other founders as well. those are individual achievements. you want to go and play in the olympics, you want to be a broadcaster, celebrate the game. this is so different.
6:37 am
this is something that is going to be leaving a legacy, or at least we hope so, for generations to come. you talk about football. football is something that unites people. it unites communities. and we have the opportunity, being the only professional women's sports team in the bay area, and with football in particular, you look around the world. it's generational. and it's something that brings families together, communities together, and we just hope that we can leave that legacy for the bay area. >> and it has a lot of traction. the viewers are watching right now, some of the national women's soccer league games, and you were talking about the growth. people like to criticize and say people don't watch women's sports, but that's not true anymore. >> it's not true. and as soon as we start getting more media dollars into the space, that trajectory is going to change more quickly. this year, opening weekend, 48% growth year-over-year, compared to 2022. and that was with the attendance coming out to those opening matches.
6:38 am
i think what you're seeing in women's sports is there's only been 1% of media dollars spent in that space. so people don't validate that women's sports garners a lot of attraction, a lot of attention. no one is telling them to care. now people to starting to understand that this is an entertaining product, there is incredible value there. it's untapped potential. and i think as soon as the investment continues, hopefully to build off of what we're doing in this space, i think you're going to see a massive shift and it's going to be at an exponential rate. >> what's really cool is it's built on the strength of women, it's you and some of the players you played with and women from silicon valley who are leading the charge. >> we talk about that all the time, women leaning in for women. and i think as founders, we, of course, have a natural connection because we all played football together, but i think when you're seeing sheryl sandberg come into the space and other incredible tech executives, they were involved in this project from day one. and they saw the potential, they understand the value of
6:39 am
supporting women, women's football, women's sports in general, and, in fact, our board will be majority women led. so this sin something we're just talking about. this is something we're actively participating in and making sure that we start to change that narrative moving forward. we have the ability to control that. >> absolutely. so 2024, is going to be the first. but you're not going to have a facility by then. we are dying to know, what is the home turf? >> we plan to build a world-class training facility, one that rivals any training facility, men's or women's sports. that's absolutely in the works. short-term, no, we don't have the quick turnaround time, a short runway, but we're going to have a fantastic place to play, as long as we bring the bay area together and have the community own this team, it's going to be something special. people want to belong to something and we hope to create that. >> i want it in san jose, i want it in santa clara, who is going to get the bragging rights? >> this is the bay's team and
6:40 am
that's what we want everyone to understand. this is about all the different communities, over 101 different communities in the bay area, this is about all of you. this is a team that hopefully will be the beacon that everyone comes to and starts to celebrate what makes this landscape, this area so unique in the world. i mean, this is where we change the game. this is where we reset norms and it's going to start in women's football as well. >> and you are -- you're from the bay area, played in the bay area, so this is going to be an opportunity for future players to maybe play in front of their home crowd. >> exactly. i mean, this is one of the hubs of churning out u.s. women's national team level talent. right now we've got nine u.s. women's national team levels on a roster of 26 heading into the next camp. we develop talent, talent wants to come here, they come to santa clara, they come to stanford, and this is a natural place for a lot of the top players in the world that either develop or be attracted to. >> thank you, aly.
6:41 am
when the kids complain about going to practice today, tell them, you've got to go, because there's big things coming for the bay area. >> i know. so exciting. so much history has been made with women's soccer here. and thank aly for getting up early as well. she's a trip let mom as well. >> she was just making the kids sandwiches a second ago. >> just like us. >> exactly. thanks a lot, kris. >> love to see that. >> little known fact, i played club soccer in college. i thought because i ran track in high school i could play soccer in college. it takes an incredible amount of stamina and skill to play soccer. i mean, that's a lot of running. and it was fun, it was just so much fun. didn't make it to the soccer team. >> hey, getting out there, that's such a part of it. how many of us, you drive around the bay area on the weekend and kids are out there playing soccer. i love it. >> absolutely. all you need is the ball. that's why it's worldwide. >> and a few people to play to

[ laughter ] we're going to kick it over to kari. >> it's going to gradually start to warm up here. it's been a little too cold out there, especially in the mornings, as we take a live look outside in san rafael. it's all clear. and our temperatures are in the low 40s. look at the wind starting to pick up. 12 miles per hour. it will still be breezy today and a slow warming trend throughout the morning. but overall it's going to be another chilly day. only reaching to 59 in novato and 62 in santa rosa. that's one of the warmer spots compared to the upper 50s we'll see that's well below what's normal for this time of year. as we go into the weekend, it's going to start to feel a little bit nicer, so i'll show you that temperature trend in a few minutes. mike, you were watching major spots around the bay area that may be slowing. >> critical at this time is the san mateo bridge because the volume builds and it's not a good time because they have a disabled vehicle mid span.
6:43 am
i'm trying to sort out what they mean, but i think it means the vehicle is going to be tough to tow out of the year because it is very close to the ground. they might need a flatbed so the service lane will be critical at that point. we'll watch for developments and updates from the chp. for now, avoid westbound across the san mateo bridge, use the dumbarton bridge. look how clear that is. look how clear the connecter is between the two spans, 880 slow coming out of oakland, the crash blocks and there is a slowdown through the area. 580 is clear, but 880, allow another few minutes and the backup at the bay bridge continues to build. >> thanks, mike. 6:42 right now. a key election in a midwest state. ahead on "today in the bay," the reason the results of today's decision will impact other key elections moving forward. >> and while we're all still dreaming about a four-day workweek, one ohio school is moving forward with a four-day school week. the reason the superintendent

good tuesday morning. right now let's head to the east bay. san leandro only 38 degrees.

it is a cold start and it's going to slowly warm up today and basically match yesterday's high temperatures with upper 50s. it just won't be as windy. and we are going to have a warming trend, but we may have some rain before we get there. so i'll have more on that in the forecast coming up. >> we have more on the road. the commute kicks in. the northbound side of 880 by the coliseum is now seeing a jam. north of high street is a crash, on the southbound side. you see the headlights are moving smoothly, light traffic because everybody is held up coming out of downtown oakland, heading past fruitvale. we'll show you more coming up. >> thank you. voters in wisconsin are facing a huge decision today. >> scott mcgrew joins us. who they choose as the next state supreme court judge could change life in wisconsin and really all over the united states. >> potentially all over the united states. who wins affects all kinds of issues in wisconsin, access to guns, education, abortion.
6:48 am
but most importantly, when they're choosing these wisconsin supreme court justices, they're choosing between a liberal and a conservative. wisconsin right now has got three conservative and three liberal judges. they're missing one. that means the decision today, the vote today will decide is this going to be a liberal dominated court or a conservative dominated court. and here you see some of the things that could be affected. i want to draw your attention to election results. wisconsin is a swing state with ten electoral votes. if there were a dispute, manufactured or not, like there were in the presidential race in arizona, georgia, pennsylvania, et cetera, and the wisconsin supreme court had to weigh in, that could affect the decision of where those ten electoral votes go. >> interesting. >> the worst case scenario, i

with teachers struggling to keep up. >> we really dig deep, this is about achievement, and if our teachers aren't 100%, our students won't get what they need and deserve. >> how is it exactly going to work? stick around for the "today" show coming up at 7:00 with continuing coverage. the warriors will take on oklahoma city thunder, this is in the final home game of the season tonight. andrew wiggins is expected to return some time this week. he's been out due to personal matters. "the athletic" reports wiggins plans to attend tonight's game but it's not clear if he will play. after tonight, the warriors will go on the road to face the sacramento kings on friday. they will close out the season against the trailblazers are sunday. >> trending this morning, fans on dc comics will get a first live action latino superhero.

>> jamie will play in the blockbuster "blue beetle". >> it's going to be okay! >> fans of the comic book series may remember rayes is attacked by an ancient alien who enters his body but it gives him special powers, including flight and the ability to manipulate matter. the movie will feature a predominantly latino cast, including george lopez, you may know mario from the netflix series "cobra kai." it will be released in august. >> i didn't realize the significance of it, but i thought that looks pretty good. >> when i was a kid, i just wanted a cape because i saw that on the superheroes. now with these suits -- >> you want to have the suit, too.

>> you kind of do. >> good luck to you parents out there. christmas is coming. christmas-like weather. >> hopefully not that cold. >> yeah, but it's easter. this is easter week. it's supposed to feel like easter. eventually we're going to get a little taste of spring, and i mean little. it is cold today. but it looks so nice outside. so it's great to have the sunshine, but we want the temperatures to match. if you're going to be outside, it's going to be, of course, a lot of pollen floating through the air. a lot of people are coughing and sneezing and all of that stuff this time of year. right now it is grasses, ash, alder and juniper that's really high on the pollen count, and you've probably seen that yellow coating on your vehicle. yeah, that's starting up. if you are going to be spending more time outside in walnut creek, maybe the kids are out of school, you want to look for something to do, just going to the neighborhood park, it's going to be a cold morning. you might want to find indoor activities at least through noon. later on today we're headed for

the upper 50s and that's what we'll see around the bay area. but this is still about 5 to 8 degrees cooler than normal and only slightly warmer tomorrow, with highs in the low to mid-60s. then right back down on thursday with upper 50s in the forecast, as more clouds move in, as well as rain, not far behind. i think we'll start to see the rain chances increasing between friday and early saturday. it doesn't look like a complete washout, but we will have measurable rain to keep us into the weekend with a lot of that green vegetation. but then we see a quick warm-up, but then right behind that is another blast of cold temperatures. so we get, like, two days of nice weather. let me show you that on our ten-day temperature trend in palo alto. upper 50s today and then we head for the upper 60s on saturday as the rain moves out. sunday is looking perfect for easter. after that, the temperatures go back down with highs in the

upper 50s for the end of next week. we're going to take in this taste of spring that comes right in time for our easter egg hunt. mike, you're tracking multiple crashes. >> i am. over here now, the nimitz is still slow north of the coliseum. i see flashing lights, so i think they've been able to move the crash over to the shoulder, less visible coming off the high-rise and now clearing, i believe they cleared the lane southbound. we should see some recovery. still a distraction for the southbound side. less of a distraction for the northbound side. still slow both directions passing high street. that's about it for this map. we have the bay bridge toll plaza with the backup. a very serious crash coming out of vacaville, west 80, only one lane open. that's holding a lot of folks up in the north bay, keeping a lot of the east bay clear. san mateo bridge still slow toward the disabled vehicle on the high-rise. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. 6:54. happening now, religious leaders plan to call for the immediate
