>> what is so interesting to me is when i talk with thes republicans, so many of them give covers to mr. trump even though that detail is still tbd. short-term gain for donald trump, that is what we're seeing in the polling numbers that's what we see when he talks about in his view being politically persecuted this is helping him, clearly, with his base. we will see him go down. if you lay it out, we will see him go down lower manhattan. we will see him appear in court at least briefly in the hole, at least for a couple of seconds. this is unprecedented. he will use that to motivate his base you know what? he needs more than his base to succeed in a general election. so far, nobody has come after him on this. give it six months and let's see if his republican rivals give him that cover. >> lindsey graham said this all but seals the nominations for him. no -- his republican rivals, people in the race against him -- >> mike pence, ron desantis. >> nikki haley did not lay a

information china might have gathered, but u.s. officials tell nbc news that as the chinese balloon flew over several military sites, it was collecting intelligence, despite efforts to block it from doing this morning, new details about what that chinese spy balloon was doing as it traveled over the u.s. in february in exclusive reporting by nbc news, the air ship china claims was just a weather balloon was able to gather intelligence passing over sensitive u.s. military sites according to two current and one former senior official, it was being maneuvered from china, even steered in a figure eight pattern at times and collected electrical signals collected from u.s. bases. rejected u.s. claims of spying, repeating that it was a civilian balloon.

officials here in beijing have called a provocation that is likely to trigger chinese military drills around taiwan as a response. savannah >> janis mackey frayer in beijing for us thank you. 7:15 craig joins the table. another story breaking overnight. >> good morning. a nationwide search for a fugitive and one-time top aide to the former governor of maryland has ended in his death. stephanie gosk is here with the latest on this one good morning to you. >> good morning. roy mcgrath was on the run for three weeks after failing to show up for federal court. in baltimore overnight federal agents found him in tennessee leading to a standoff involving gun fire and resulting in mcgrath's death which the fbi is investigating overnight, the three-week manhunt ended with a fatal exchange of gunfire, catching up with rory mcgrath in knoxville, tennessee. according to both fbi officials and mcgrath's attorney as agents moved in, a shot was fired.

agents fired back. the fbi said mcgrath sustained injury and was transported to the president. in a statement the attorney saying the fbi confirmed he succumbed to the injuries. it is unclear if he died of a self-inflicted wound or from an exchange of gunfire with the fbi. mcgrath was facing federal charges including wire fraud and embezzlement related to alleged financial misdeeds as head of a maryland state agency on march 12th, the night before his trial, mcgrath was supposed to have bordered a flight to maryland but was never seen again resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest, something that surprised his attorney at the time. >> i know these situations are stressful. the uncertainty of going to trial can cause people to do things that we may not believe are appropriate. >> reporter: the 53-year-old had been on the run for 21 days before the fbi agents tracked him down to a parking lot at a

jenna is here with the story of a district that's trying. >> you may think a group of school kids hope and dreamed this up. but in this case it is an ohio superintendent behind the push. he's hoping to help an overworked group of teachers by instituting a four-day workweek. >> right now you need to get out your chromebook. >> reporter: in classrooms coast to coast, many devoted teachers work long hours, even weekends for the love of the job. >> really good teaching has a lot of components that extend beyond the direct instruction that you do in a classroom. >> reporter: but in north college hills schools, superintendent eugene blaylock is alarmed by what's happening. what were you seeing in your teachers? >> you walk through the building and you can see it in their eyes how tired they are. >> reporter: teacher burn-out and a whole lot of it. >> i was a teacher. i think it is the most important job there is. i know from my time in the classroom that it is not a 9:00 to 5:00. teachers are spending hours in

might look at it and go, wait a second i want my kid in five days i work five days what's the argument? what are parents saying? >> yeah. i mean, i think many parents are saying that, but he is making sure there is accommodations for kids that need child care so that they can go to school they're figuring that out. but also, the school i taught in washington, d.c. was 99% free and reduced lunch, meaning all of our kids needed to eat there breakfast and lunch. >> with the pandemic, a lot of kids were missing meals and a lot of kid missed school during the pandemic it is not like there is an easy answer, but how interesting that he's willing to experiment to try it to see if we can persist in this conversation. >> tote. i think because of the pandemic, this is why this is happening, because they did figure out how to feed kids that needed food even during the depth of the pandemic it is hard because there are studies that say that kids are behind because of being at home for that year.
