the new push for transparency as the investigation into the longtime executive of the san jose police officers association faces charges of drug dealing. >> also, helping those in need. the way one local organization will be assisting flooding victims in the city of pajaro. this is "today in the bay." a very good wednesday morning to you. quickly approaching 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the commute in just a bit, but first we want to start out with the forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. >> another morning to bundle up. it's cold and we also have a frost advisory in effect for parts of the north bay as we go into the next few hours it's going to be in the mid to upper 30s in some of these spots. we're already seeing that right now with fairfield, napa and santa rosa at 37 degrees, it's cold enough to have the frost forming on your windshield.

as we take a look at some valley temperatures, it continues to dip. los gatos at 34 degrees, and 37 in san martin. rohnert park, 37 right now, calm wind, clear sky, as we go into the rest of today we'll see a few clouds here and there. sun peeking out and then we head for the low 60s, which will be a little warmer compared to yesterday. so we're making some progress here. we'll talk more about what's ahead coming up. mike, you have an alert for people driving through san francisco. >> that's right, the southern portion right here, we'll show you the green sensors. that's the good part, contra costa county, alameda county looking like a great start. the early slowing hasn't appeared on highway 4 or 37. overnight we've had this crash, and an investigation continues here. the san mateo county alert went out saying avoid el camino between hickey and mcclelland. keep clear of the activity that will be going on for several

hours. that was much longer than we initially thought. so that will continue in the city of south san francisco. the rest of the bay shows smooth freeways. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the arrest of the san jose police union executive director continues. today the naacp will make a call for greater accountability. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us live from the police officers association with more on what will happen here. kris? >> reporter: hi, marcus. that question has been an ongoing drum beat since joanne segovia was indicted, whether or not she was working alone, how could this happen under the noses of the police officers union and was anyone else complicit. folks at the union say no one else is under investigation, but there are a lot of community groups that want to know and they want more transparency. joanne segovia was in court on friday, but today the naacp of silicon valley, silicon valley debug and other human rights and

community activists will call for that transparency about the drug trafficking charges against the 64-year-old. the san jose police officers association president told me that she was considered the grandpa of the poa for her work with officers and families in sometimes their worst times. segovia is alleged to have received 61 shipments of a synthetic fentanyl from overseas, which then she allegedly distributed to other states, sometimes using union resources. >> the irony of them trying to say it was just her, it's not us, and for the public to accept that logic, well, if it was the shoe on the other foot and they're investigating an organization where one individual was alleged to have initiated this criminal activity, the entire organization would be held responsible. as such, i would expect the public to hold them to the same standards they hold others to and the entire organization

should be responsible. >> who would have ever thought that the head of the san jose police department association would be dealing large amounts of controlled substances and importing them from india and china? >> reporter: joanne segovia does not have to enter a plea until she is formally indicted, that's happening later this month. she has not spoken on her own behalf at this point. the naacp-led coalition wants to know if it is possible that anybody else knew or anybody else was working with her. they will hold that press conference at 2:00 this afternoon in front of the san jose city hall. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people are asking for more transparency when it comes to investigations like this. kris sanchez this morning, thanks. this morning, donald trump is back home in florida, where he addressed a room full of supporters last night. the former president wasted little time tearing into the new york judge and district attorney

who oversaw his arraignment yesterday. trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records, all of these related to alleged hush money payments before the 2016 election. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning. brie, definitely a very busy scene yesterday around the manhattan courthouse. all eyes were on it. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, laura. it was a lot to watch. it's almost fascinating to see everything surrounding that. but during tuesday's court hearing, it actually only lasted a little less than an hour, and we did see photos that were taken inside the courtroom, since cameras were not allowed. we did see photos, and former president trump appeared stone-faced. but hours later during his public remarks, that's when he lashed out. follows his unprecedented arraignment, former president trump addressed supporters at his mar-a-lago estate, combative

and downplaying the criminal charges against him. >> everybody said this is not really an indictment, there's nothing here. >> reporter: he also railed against prosecutors. >> the criminal is the district attorney. >> reporter: the manhattan d.a.'s office hit mr. trump with 34 felony charges related to hush money payments surrounding the 2016 election. >> to make these payments, they set up shell companies and they made yet more false statements. >> reporter: prosecutors laid out a broader picture during tuesday's arraignment, in what they called an unlawful plan to suppress negative information that could have affected mr. trump's 2016 presidential campaign. trump pleaded not guilty and his legal team claimed their client is the victim. >> while everyone is not above the law, no one is low it, either. if this man's name was not donald j. trump, there is no scenario we would be here. >> reporter: protesters from both sides gathered outside the courthouse. >> i'm more standing for

democracy than against trump. >> this is a frame job. >> reporter: tuesday's criminal charges stem from one legal matter. trump could face more legal trouble from investigations into the storage of classified documents at his home, efforts to overturn 2020 presidential election results, and his role in the january 6th attack. the next hearing in former president trump's criminal case is scheduled for december 4th, laura. >> we'll keep covering, won't we, brie? thank you very much. the attorney for the former president is speaking out this morning on the heels of trump's not guilty plea. you can catch the full interview this morning on "today" right after "today in the bay" at 7:00 a.m. new this morning, south bay leaders are taking a major step to combat the ongoing fentanyl crisis. the santa clara county board of supervisors approving to start supplying narcan to all county libraries. narcan can help reverse an opioid overdose.

workers will soon be trained on how to administer the drug, then it will be distributed to libraries immediately. this comes as the fda just approved over-the-counter sales nationwide. happening today, students in san francisco plan to walk out of class, all in an effort to advocate for gun safety. the group students demand action is organizing today's national demonstration. the anti-gun violence organization was formed following the mass shooting at the school in parkland, florida. today's walkout begins at noon along sacramento street. this is near the ucsf laurel heights campus and comes more than a week after the mass shooting in nashville. three 9-year-old kids and three staff members were killed. also today, flood victims in pajaro will be getting relief from a nonprofit. they're sending the equity express bus to the town damaged by recent storms.

the bus will carry 250 backpacks and boxes full of blankets, socks, food and school supplies. it can be used to provide mental health services to farmworkers affected. just this week president joe biden signed a major disaster declaration allowing for assistance to be deployed to help that community and many throughout california. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge on this wednesday morning, it is a cold start to our morning. kari has a look at some of the temperatures. >> we're seeing upper 30s, low 40s, another chilly morning across the bay area. as you're stepping out in san jose, just a few clouds overhead. you'll have to bundle up. later on today it's going to start to feel nicer and you may want to make plans to head outside, maybe go for a hike. we'll see partly cloudy skies for today into the next couple of days. and then we are getting ready for rain. early friday morning we'll see showers moving into the north bay, spotty rain throughout the morning. we could see this linger into

company to lay off, the streaming service will cut 200 more jobs. and like so many other tech companies, they'll sell office space. the latest employment figures released yesterday show it's been rough in the information sector. layoffs in that sector are up 63%, according to the labor department. that said, silicon valley's unemployment rate is 3%, that's less than california average, less than nationwide average. now, that same data called jolts shows there's still 9.9 million unfilled jobs out there. jolts is job openings and labor turnover survey. >> expedia says it will use chatgpt to interact with some customers. you'll be able to ask it natural language questions, like find me a hotel within walking distance of the stadium that has an all-night restaurant and charges less than 40 bucks for parking. now, not everybody is enthralled

with chatgpt. meet this mayor in australia. >> my name is counselor brian hood and i'm mayor for the coming here. this is a short wrap-up of last night's council meeting. >> he is the mayor but definitely not the suspect in a bribery scandal and he wants you to know that. apparently chatgpt tells you he is if you ask about him. not only is brian not the bad guy, he is the guy who blew the whistle on the gad guy. hood says he's going to sue chatgpt to stop it from spreading that information, which as far as we can tell is the first time someone has sued an artificial intelligence company for something its artificial intelligence said. we always try to verify people's claims. we cannot get chatgpt 3.5 or 4.0 to accuse hood of anything. it's possible the company has fixed that problem. the beauty of the chatgpt is you can ask it a question and it gives you the answer.

>> he's been working out. >> it's so funny, i was in l.a. this weekend at universal studios and everywhere is about mario and i saw this kid and the dad said he's really excited. i said, you're excited, too, right? he said, yeah. >> head to the movies maybe today, because it's kind of cold outside. >> it has been so chilly out there, even during the middle of the day when it's supposed to be the warmest point. once the wind kicks up, you're like, okay, i need my jacket. this is early april and we still need the heavier coats. take a look at dublin right now. it is only 38 degrees, and we'll have temperatures in the 30s for the next couple of hours, maybe even cold enough to scrape frost off of the windshield, especially in some of our inland areas where the wind is not kicking up as much. we'll see a few clouds here and there, temperatures gradually warming up, headed for the low 60s, which is actually warmer

than yesterday, but that's still well below what we typically see in early april, reaching 60 in hayward and 59 today in oakland, 57 in san francisco, and novato will see a high of 60 for later today. taking it into tomorrow, just a couple of degrees warmer. so we're going to have a little bit of a taste of spring, but there will be more clouds moving in. and by friday, even though we're reaching into the low to mid-60s, we'll see rain moving in. it will be time to get the umbrellas back out on friday, off and on spotty showers starting in the morning, continuing into the early afternoon. there may be a brief break in the evening. but by saturday we're seeing a slight chance of early morning showers. sunday is looking dry for those easter egg hunts, and then going back to work on monday, it's going to be cool once again. we'll see temperatures dropping once the system passes. we're looking about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain, maybe

higher across the coastal areas, as well as the santa cruz mountains. take a look at walnut creek. our temperatures still going up and down and the little taste of 70 degrees only gets here for one day, before we're back to those mid-60s for highs. looking at our seven-day forecast, overall we are going to see some breaks from the rain, as well as a couple of showers by friday into early saturday. sunday is looking nice, and we may be tracking north bay showers on monday. mike, how is it looking in the tri-valley? >> overall it's great. the tri-valley, that is a concern because it looks like we were at that point where things start to change on northbound 680. we saw slowing just before you get to 84, indicating a traffic break. they just cleared north 680, recovery for 84. look at the commute coming in off of 580. 680, again, all access to sunol heading toward dublin and pleasanton, we're looking at the bay bridge where there's no delay. starting to build just a bit as we're looking toward the rest of

this is early april. it's starting out in the upper 30s again. we're seeing that especially in the north bay, as well as the tri-valley, down to the south bay, where it is 35 degrees in los gatos right now. it's 38 in mountain view and 37 in fairfield, napa and in santa rosa, as you make plans for the day maybe the kids are on spring break, you'll probably want to find indoor activities, at least until this afternoon, because it's going to be another chilly morning with the sun peeking out, and we'll reach into the low 60s across much of the bay area today. a little bit warmer in the forecast. we'll talk about that when we get rain. mike, you were looking at a police investigation in the bay area. >> they're saying this part of el camino real, avoid that, between hickey boulevard, there was a serious crash. someone died as a result of the crash and so the investigation continues in that portion of state route 82.

you can use mcclelland just south or hillside. in the east bay, we're looking at highway 4, just starting to build. a light build here at the bay bridge as well. no slowing and no metering lights just yet. breaking overnight, a person is killed after a collision on the peninsula. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us from the newsroom with more on the investigation unfolding. what are police saying about this? >> good morning. not much. we have reached out to south san francisco police, waiting to hear back. here is what we know. one person was hit and killed around 1:00 this morning on the el camino near mcclelland drive, the area where mike was just referring to. this is the intersection by the entrance to a costco, if you're familiar with that area. video shows the person ended up dead in the middle of the road. there's a green apron we believe the person might have been wearing, also in the street. our photographer on the scene did ask the police about the driver and the vehicle involved,

and an officer says they're gone, but they would not confirm whether or not this was a hit and run. again, we are trying to confirm that information with south san francisco police. live here in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest. we are following a developing story out of san francisco. a high profile bay area tech executive has been killed in a stabbing. sources tell nbc bay area bob lee was attacked early yesterday morning around 2:00. lee was the chief product officer of mobilecoin, former cto of square, and one of the co-founders of cash app. the 43-year-old was stabbed on main street in the east cut neighborhood. this is near the bay bridge. police say when officers arrived, they found a man had been stabbed. paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he later died. this morning, crews in solano county plan to search for the body of a missing boater. the sheriff's office says the person disappeared around dutton

and snag islands early yesterday morning. crews started searching, but later called it off. now they say it is a recovery operation. we are working to learn the boater's identity. there's a plea from a los gatos family to make a road safer, after a woman was killed when she and her daughter were hit by a speeding car. raw emotions were on display at the council meeting as the family of limin cao pleaded for action to make blossom hill road safer. last month, her family, she was with her 11-year-old daughter and her dog when they were hit and run over by a car at the crosswalk on leigh avenue and san jose. the mayor says the town council will be partnering with san jose to look at all the safety of the roads, including blossom hill road. now, her 18-year-old son said that most intersections in that area, they're seeing speed

concerns. >> it takes time for policy to be implemented. we'll have to wait and see whether everything we talked about today actually gets implemented. >> several people in los gatos are pushing for road safety. they will be bringing their same concerns to the san jose city council meeting later this month. former president trump made a speech to a room full of supporters in florida hours after he was charged with 34 crimes. >> scott, i know trump has spoken out against the judge, several prosecutors and their wives. >> and their wives. good morning. the judge's adult daughter as well. trump has found fault with all of them. we know trump's lawyers are not comfortable with his claims that the new york judge assigned to him is unfair. prosecutors brought up some of trump's past statements and social posts in tuesday's court hearing. trump, of course, arrested yesterday, charged with 34 counts related to the payoffs he made to an adult film star. here are the lawyers from both sides in that case.

>> under new york state law, it is a felony to falsify business records with intent to defraud and intent to conceal another crime. that is exactly what this case is about. 34 false statements made to cover up other crimes. >> i was surprised there were no facts in there. normally in an indictment you have alleged facts. they said this was a false business record entry to aid and a bet another crime without saying what it was. >> mr. trump's lawyer will make a return trip to the "today" show coming up at 7:00, right after "today in the bay." the judge, during that hearing, warned trump not to make further statements that would incite violence or civil unrest, and trump did not last night. he did, however, bring up all the various prosecutors investigating him. he spent a lot of time talking about the civil case against his company headed by new york state attorney general letitia james.

him at 6'5". >> thank you very much, scott. it is 5:37. happening nod, house speaker kevin mccarthy is expected to meet with taiwan's president. he arrived in los angeles last night ahead of the sit-down. mccarthy's office says he's host a bipartisan meeting at the ronald reagan presidential library. taiwan is a self-governing island that china claims as its territory. beijing leaders are objecting to the meeting before it was confirmed saying that such talks would be provocations. this morning, a popular south bay mushroom festival in morgan hill is being postponed. the festival was scheduled during memorial day weekend but has been rescheduled for 2024. organizers say a security company that booked terminated their contract, and they did not have enough time to find another company to support the large festival. organizers say, instead, they'll hold a smaller benefit concert. the concert will be on may 27th

at 4:30 p.m. at the morgan hill amphitheater. 5:38 this morning. look at this beautiful shot as we take a look out toward san francisco this morning. this is from sausalito. beautiful start to the morning. yet, a cold start. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. it's going to be really beautiful when the sun rises, but we still have a little more than an hour before sunrise. and we're dealing with cold temperatures. we had a frost advisory in effect for the valleys and the north bay, napa included, where it is in the upper 30s. that's cold enough for frost to form on your windshield and some of those elevated surfaces. today we're going to see the wind becoming a little more breezy, the sun peeking out from behind the clouds. but it will be slightly warmer this afternoon as we head for 62 degrees there. 64 for san jose and 59 for san mateo. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates and talk about some incoming rain in just a few minutes. mike has a look at oakland.

>> a look at 880 through oakland. this is just north of the coliseum. easy flow of traffic. this week, oakland, i know, has their spring break and we have some schools in livermore and others throughout parts of the east bay, so that may be disturbing the lighter flow of the morning commute. we're looking at a pleasant surprise for highway 4, lighter traffic there. no problems coming down to the maze, the bay bridge toll plaza. a little build for highway 37. looking ahead toward 92, we may see more slowing in both directions, we have road work continuing, there was a sinkhole and we're hold to watch for one-way traffic controls continuing through this area. we continue to pass that along. we're looking toward the south bay where we have the first slowing typical of north 101. in the same area where they had the overnight closure. it didn't happen last night but might happen again tonight.

have given liberals the majority of the wisconsin supreme court. janet protasiewicz won yesterday. her election allows the liberal majority to have controlling votes on issues, including abortion rights, the legislative maps and election administration. wisconsin is seen as a key battleground state in the 2024 presidential election. protasiewicz was elected to a ten-year term. chicago has selected a new mayor, brandon johnson meet paul vallas in the runoff election. during his victory speech, johnson called for a city government that works for the people of chicago. south bay leaders are working to make it easier for some families to make it in the bay. santa clara county board of supervisors approved a plan to make more affordable housing. part of the plan is to buy five

san jose properties and turn those into 100 affordable housing units. construction will start in a few months. the funds come from a $950 million housing bond that passed six years ago. if you're thinking about traveling during the spring and summer, now is the time to book for the best fares. airline fares are down from 12% since their peak last year. if you have the flexibility, the cheapest days to travel are tuesday, wednesday and saturday. >> if you see a fare that you're comfortable with now, book it. do not wait. airfare doesn't act like retail where the closer you get to, say, a holiday, things to get cheaper and cheaper. that's not how airfare works. it actually tends to go in the other direction and tends to get more expensive the longer you wait until the intended date of travel. >> if you need to apply or renew a passport, it's been kind of tough for a lot of folks. going.com says the processing

in the works. a lot of funny characters. >> no surprise there. i think a lot of people like the character eddie played. >> absolutely. that's probably why they want another movie. >> they have so many. it's really funny. >> can't wait to see that. >> they don't age. >> oh, to be an ogre. >> good moisturizer. let's get a look at that forecast. >> it's cold again, and this is easter week and we're looking forward to some warmer weather. but it's going to take a little bit of time before it gets here. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, a clear start to the day, not as windy, and it will be a nice day to also enjoy some more time outside. but you'll probably want to wait until later on this afternoon. our temperatures this morning starting out in the upper 30s, low 40s, so very chilly out there. now, there will be some clouds rolling in, but then we start to see a little more sunshine at times for later this afternoon, as we reach into the low 60s.

so it's been a while since we've even seen 60s across the bay area and we are going to have that today and the next few days. as you look at the bottom of the screen on the seven-day forecast, there's a couple of days with some 70s. but tomorrow it comes up a few degrees, but still no 70s just yet. and we'll start to see more clouds coming in as we get ready for some rain on friday, which will bring down temperatures just a couple of degrees. so spots like oakland and san mateo will reach 62 degrees, and 64 for the end of the week in santa rosa. as we go hour-by-hour, let's talk about when the rain comes in. i know you're trying to make weekend plans. it's early on friday morning, as a lot of people will be sleeping or getting ready to head off for work. we're going to see that rolling from the north bay into the rest of the bay area and it does look like the north bay will have the highest chance of getting measurable rain, and then a couple of spotty showers late friday afternoon. saturday, for the most part, looking dry. we may still have lingering

showers on saturday morning. so a closer look at the system coming in, kind of gets held up, and then gets pushed back a little bit as high pressure builds. there will be another chance of rain in monday's forecast. once again, with the north bay being the target for those higher rainfall totals, and our temperatures are going to be going back and forth. but let's talk about how much rain is possible in our forecast. it's going to be pretty light here. mostly about a tenth to a quarter inch of rainfall from san francisco on southward, but along the coastline parts of the santa cruz mountains could see much more, anywhere from three quarters of an inch of rain to an inch of rain around ben lomond. and the rest of the seven-day forecast shows a couple of spotty showers. easter sunday is looking perfect, so whatever you're planning to do, it's going to be in the upper 60s and low 70s. we only see that taste of spring with some 70s in the forecast for a day or two and then it goes right back down as another cold front moves in. but it's going to be nice to

take that break, and also nice to get just a little bit of rain. not a big storm, and nothing that should cause any major disruptions. mike, you're starting to see a buildup at the bay bridge. >> just a little bit. not a big disturbance. we do have building on schedule here at the bay bridge, out of oakland metering lights are on, slow up the incline. you see the sensors for west 80, moving toward treasure island. we'll see them slow a bit more getting into san francisco. highway 37 holds up steady, a little slowing, traditional as the volume builds out of vallejo. highway 4, good slowing and nice pattern out of pleasant hill and out of bay point and pittsburg. no problem at the walnut creek interchange. 680 south, heading into the area, we're seeing slowing just south of bernal. overnight road work did pick up and it will happen again tonight. 84 picking up a build, but no major concerns as far as the flow. it's an easy drive past the
