walk, and i thought, oh, i need a jacket. >> it's when the wind picks up. it's like those gusts come in and you're, like, okay, warm sunshine, but a cold wind. and it's just starting out cold this morning. there's not much of a breeze. and our temperatures are dipping. we're at 36 degrees in santa rosa. it's 37 in dublin and 35 in los gatos. so another morning where we're having to put on extra layers. in martinez it is 40 degrees, the wind is calm, the sky is clear. we'll just see a few clouds mixing in as we go into late morning, into the afternoon. it will be slightly warmer compared to yesterday. i don't know if you'll want to spend all day outside, but at least it's going to be a little milder compared to the weather we've had for the past few days. eventually we'll see some rain and we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you have a couple of significant notes. >> one is a given, the bay bridge toll plaza, the build continues. we don't have all lanes filled, but give it a couple of minutes.

a slow, smooth drive coming through richmond. no major problems, highway 37, highway 4, traditional pattern. we're talking about the last week, this week, next week with a lot of spring breaks, so that will make the morning commute lighter. a big note for south san francisco, not on the highway, state route 82, avoid the area by mcclelland. we're continuing an overnight deadly crash investigation. the rest of the freeways are moving slowly. the fallout from the arrest of the san jose police union executive director continues. the naacp will make a call for greater accountability. kris sanchez is joining us from the police officers association with more on what will happen here. kris? >> reporter: marcus, so the constant question since joanne segovia was charged with alleged drug trafficking charges has been how could nobody have known, and if somebody knew,

then why isn't somebody else being investigated? those are some of the questions that community groups are going to ask for today. the 64-year-old, joanne segovia, was in court on friday. today the naacp of silicon valley, silicon valley debug and other community activists will call for greater transparency about the drug trafficking charges against the office manager and executive director here. the san jose police officers association president told me she was considered the grandpa of the poa for her warmth the officers and their families in the worst of times, but that she is the only person under federal investigation. segovia is alleged to have received 61 shipments of a synthetic fentanyl to her home in san jose, which then she allegedly distributed to other states, sometimes using union resources. >> the irony of them trying to say it was just her, it's not us, and for the public to accept that logic, well, if it was the

shoe on the other foot and they're investigating an organization where one individual was alleged to have initiated this criminal activity, the entire organization would be held responsible. as such, i would expect the public to hold them to the same standards they hold others to, and the entire organization should be responsible. >> who would have ever thought, who would have ever thought that the head of the san jose police department association would be dealing large amounts of controlled substances and importing them from india and china? >> reporter: joanne segovia does not have to enter a plea until she is formally indicted. that will happen in a federal court later this month. she has not yet spoken on her behalf. now, the naacp-led coalition wants to know whether anybody else knew anything, and, again, they want transparency. they are going to rally with other community organizations at

2:00 this afternoon in front of san jose city hall. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> when we have investigations, we're seeing more organizations call for full transparency. thank you. 6:04 right now. new this morning, south bay leaders are taking a major step forward. this is to combat the ongoing fentanyl crisis. the santa clara county board of supervisors yesterday approving to start supplying narcan to all county libraries. narcan can help reverse an opioid overdose. workers will be trained on how to administer narcan, then it will be distributed to those libraries immediately. this comes as the fda just approving over-the-counter sales of narcan nationwide. this morning, donald trump back home in florida, where he addressed a room full of supporters last night. the former president wasted little time tearing into the new york judge and district attorney who oversaw his arraignment yesterday. trump is charged with 34 counts

of falsifying business records, all of these related to alleged hush money payments before the 2016 election. in a speech from mar-a-lago last night, the former president rallied against prosecutors at times, he was combative and downplayed the criminal charges against him. the attorney for the former president is speaking out about the indictment on the "today" show this morning. during an interview, savannah guthrie brought up the fact that the judge in the case did not issue a gag order, but encouraged both sides to remain quiet about the case to avoid jeopardizing the safety of the proceedings. >> did you do what the judge asked you to do and advise him to knock it off? >> president trump heard the judge. he's not done anything to try to incite violence. clearly yesterday was an insane scene outside, but there was no violence. he didn't call for violence. he didn't call for anything. and the judge didn't admonish

him or post a gag order because he didn't do anything that would invite violence. protesting is what we do in this country. you know the boston tea party thing? >> the next hearing in trump's criminal case is scheduled for december 4th. you can watch the full interview with trump's attorney this morning on "today." it is right after "today in the bay" at 7:00 a.m. happening today, students in san francisco plan to walk out of the class, this is all in an effort to advocate for gun safety. the group students demand action organizing today's national demonstration, the antigun violence organization was formed following the mass shooting at a school in parkland, florida. today's walkout will begin at noon along sacramento street near laurel heights campus and it comes more than a week after the mass shooting at a nashville school. three 9-year-olds and three staff members were killed there. also today, flood victims in pajaro will be getting some much-needed relief from a bay area nonprofit.

alas is sending the equity express bus to the town, damaged by recent storms. the state of the art bus will carry 250 backpacks and boxes full of blankets, socks, food and school supplies and will be used to provide mental health services to farmworkers affected. just this week, president joe biden signed a major disaster declaration allowing for fema workers and assistance to be deployed to that and other areas to help with the community. also following our recent storms, business owners in chinatown will now asking for donations to fix the famous red lanterns. the recent rain and wind tore the lanterns on grand avenue to pieces. the chinatown merchants association put the red lanterns up over a decade ago. since then, they've become a symbol of san francisco's chinatown. now business owners want to replace them. they've already received some grants and donations, but they're asking for more help to cover the rest of the costs. 6:08, as we take a live look

in san jose, as we get started. the sun is starting to come up but the temperatures are staying low. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that for us. how is mountain view looking? >> it's going to be a cold start, not only here but around the bay area. i think you might want to wait until the afternoon to go to the playground. it's going to be chilly, even just going out for a walk. you do have to add on some extra layers. we are going to keep the sunshine for today. more clouds moving in tomorrow and rain in friday's forecast, starting out early in the morning. at 3:00 on friday morning, we're seeing showers moving into the north bay, kind of spotty and happening throughout the morning, into the early afternoon. and it's not going to add up to a lot at this point, but we are going to see some additional wet weather before we go into the weekend. we'll talk about our temperatures going up and down in a few minutes. mike is looking at gas

prices going up. reverse the order as well for today. we're looking at the top being the top price. contra costa county's best price is only down to $4.17 at the concord super stop on willow pass road. south bay's cupertino in the middle, great gas, $4.09. alameda county still has a few at $3.85. that's the best for that county. but the bay's best continues to be the one spot $3.83 at vallejo, shell street and tennessee street, in the north bay. a look at the roadways, we're seeing a green flow of traffic. 237 eased up, back to the speed limit after you get off of 880. the arrow shows you slowing for 101. that will kick in over the next 20 to 30 minutes throughout san jose. 101 moves smoothly through mountain view. palo alto, nice drive. you see headlights moving north toward san mateo, san francisco.

steady, the winds are much calmer. from here all the way starting back at santa rosa, 101 is at speed in your commute direction. we'll show you the build throughout the east bay coming up. good morning and happy wednesday to you. oil prices are stabilizing. they're up quite a bit, but they are stabilizing. i've had west texas intermediate on my board for the week. this is the first day they haven't gone up. roku, the latest high-tech company to lay off. the streaming service will cut 200 more jobs, and just like so many other tech companies, sell office space. the latest employment figures released yesterday show it's been rough in the information sector. layoffs in that sector up 63%, according to the labor department. that said, silicon valley's unemployment rate is 3% less than california's average, less than the nationwide average. that same data called jolts shows there are still

windy conditions swept through, causing some of that debris to fall onto high-rise buildings under construction. look at that. here at home, we've actually seen several cracked windows, falling glass in san francisco. this is during recent wind events we've had. the city is putting an end to the 30-year inspection exemption for 71 of the city's tallest buildings. that means those buildings will have to provide a complete inspection of their facades within the next six months. this comes less than a week after our investigative unit first responded that the exemptions existed. trending this morning, it may not be easter just yet, but it is national peeps day. >> the little squishy marshmallow treets have been around since the 1950s. they've introduced three new flavors, dr. pepper, kettle corn and mike & ike. they're also back at it in the

and only in the upper 50s for 1:00 today. we're going to slowly make progress. it's probably going to feel just as cool as it did the past few days, reaching 64 in san jose and 60 in novato. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. you can see when we'll have a couple of days with highs in the low 70s. not yet tomorrow, reaching 68 degrees in morgan hill, 66 in livermore and 64 tomorrow in martinez. and we'll see about the same on friday. but that's also when we'll see rain coming in, scattered showers start out early friday morning, and it's going to be kind of hit or miss, but mostly starting in the north bay. as we go into late morning into the afternoon, that rain will be spreading in, gradually tapering off for the evening. so if you have some friday evening plans, the rain chances will be going down. for the weekend, we're going to see this quickly sweeping on through and it may leave lingering showers early saturday. easter sunday is looking dry,

but then monday is when we see the next round of rain that may only make it into the north bay. so we're not seeing any significant storms here. and it's good to see these little systems coming in that bring us some rainfall, about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain for most of us. but it may have a much bigger impact for the santa cruz mountains, about three quarters to an inch of rain possible. let's head to morgan hill with a look at what to expect over the next ten days. so our taste of spring is just that, we only reach the low 70s for two days here and then we're back into the low 60s, which is much cooler than what we typically see for early to mid april. as we head toward easter weekend, it does look nice for outdoor activities, but it will only reach into the upper 60s and low 70s, and about 70 degrees for the start of the new week. mike, you are getting word of a crash in fremont. >> it was moving smoothly but then things backed up, indicating something was going on. we checked with chp, just around

a very good wednesday morning to you. 6:30 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we have a lot to get to this morning, but we want to get you started with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can see and what i can see, still cold out there. >> yes, new day, still same weather. it is very chilly to start out there, with the upper 30s and low 40s, and it will gradually start to warm up. we're keeping the sunshine and a few clouds moving in, but as you're heading out, hayward is at 42 degrees, the same in fremont and 45 in san francisco, upper 30s in some of our valleys. in pleasant hill, as you're making your way to work, it's going to be in the upper 30s and low 40s, a few clouds. and look at the lunchtime temperature. i'm grabbing the sandwich and going right back in. it's going to be 56 degrees. and we'll make it into the low 60s going into later today. so just a little bit warmer. we're going to see more of that in the forecast. we'll have more on that in just a few minutes. and, mike, you were looking at a

big backup in the east bay. >> we just had a traffic break, i saw the flashing lights roll south. this is southbound 880, fremont boulevard. now, there's a couple of crashes. there's one crash just south of our shot in the middle of the roadway, there's another one farther back that's made its way to the right shoulder around auto mall parkway. that's a critical part of the nimitz. now it's really jammed up, the traffic break basically stopped traffic for a couple of minutes. 680 building up because folks are using that as an alternate to get past the crash and cross over at mission, which will be crowded through city streets. the rest of the south bay moves smoothly. we do have freeways moving smoothly, but a major crash on city streets, and for that i'll land it back to you. >> this is news we've been following as it broke overnight. a person is killed after a collision there on the peninsula. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us from our newsroom with more on that investigation. bob, what are police saying

about this? >> not much. we have reached out to the south san francisco police. we are waiting to hear back. we know a pedestrian was hit and killed around 1:00 this morning on the el camino real near mcclelland drive. this is the intersection by the entrance to the costco. video shows the person ended up dead in the middle of the road. there's a green apron we believe the person might have been wearing. that is also in the street. our photographer on the scene did ask the police about the driver and vehicle involved, and the officer says that they're gone, but would not confirm whether or not this was a hit and run. again, we're trying to confirm that tidbit of information with south san francisco police. mike has informed me that that intersection is still shut down and expected to be shut down for hours. live in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. and we will continue to monitor this breaking news, both on air, as well as online. as soon as we know more, of course, we will bring updates on our free nbc bay area news app. we are following a

developing story out of san francisco, a high profile bay area tech executive has been stabbed and killed. sources tell nbc bay area bob lee was attacked early yesterday morning around 2:00. lee was a chief product officer of mobilecoin, former cto of square, and one of the co-founders of cash app. the 43-year-old was stabbed on main street in the east cut neighborhood. this is near the bay bridge. police say when officers arrived, they found a man had been stabbed. paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he later died. well, this morning crews in solano county plan to search for a body of a missing boater. the sheriff's office says that person disappeared around dutton and snag islands early yesterday morning. crews started searching, but later called it off. they now say it is a recovery operation. we're still working to learn more about that boater and the boater's identity. former president trump made a speech to a room full of supporters last night in

florida, just hours after he was charged with 34 crimes. >> scott mcgrew is here with more for us. scott, trump has spoken out against the judge, the prosecutors and, surprisingly, their wives. >> their wives, the judge's adult daughter as well. trump has found fault with all of them. we know trump's lawyers are not comfortable with his claims that the new york judge assigned to him is unfair. prosecutors brought up some of trump's past statements and social posts in tuesday's court hearing. trump, of course, arrested yesterday, charged with 34 criminal counts related to payoffs he allegedly made to an adult film star. here are the lawyers from both sides in that case. >> under new york state law, it is a felony to falsify business records with intent to defraud and intent to conceal another crime. that is exactly what this case is about. 34 false statements made to cover up other crimes.

>> i was surprised there were no facts in there. normally in an indictment you have alleged facts. so they said this was a false business record entry to aid and abet without saying what the crime was. >> mr. trump's lawyer will make a return trip to the "today" show coming up at 7:00, right after "today in the bay." the judge during that hearing warned trump not to make further statements that would incite violence or civil unrest, and trump did not last night. he did, however, bring up all of the various prosecutors investigating him. he spent a lot of time talking about the civil case against his company headed by new york state attorney general letitia james. the only case that doesn't involve jail time. he talked, again, about the investigation into the mar-a-lago documents, investigated by federal prosecutor and independent counsel, jack smith. >> we have this jack smith lunatic threatening people every single day through his

nice. not to a lot of us just starting out this morning. it's going to get more comfortable as we go into today, so maybe you'll make plans to get out and maybe go for a hike and enjoy the sunshine. you may have the trails to yourself, as the wind picks up and our temperatures reach into the upper 50s at 1:00 in the south bay. we are going to see some clouds in the mix as we only reach into the low 60s for today. which is cooler than normal. eventually we'll see some rain coming back to the bay area. this is friday morning, it first starts in the north bay by about 1:00 to 2:00 in the morning, and then sweeping through the rest of the bay area ahead of the morning commute. so we are going to see some spotty showers coming in, not a big impact storm here. but we are going to see additional rainfall before we go back to dryer weather for the rest of the weekend. we'll talk about the change in temperatures in a few minutes. mike has been tracking a crash and the impacts. >> with the help of our frien gerald and benjamin, they have found the crash, just south of

where our camera was. over to the shoulder, that's great news. traffic is starting to move much better. southbound 880 coming down. the other crash was not on the southbound side. it was actually northbound 880 at auto mall parkway. we have recovery all the way down past warren and things are back at speed. you may see the shift as some folks try to avoid the backup. overall the commute is relatively light. starting to build for 101 and 87. overnight they have permission to close 101 at de la cruz because of the over-crossing work they're doing all week. so prepare to get off and back on the freeway. north 17, we'll have one lane blocked, possibly, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. they're removing trees and debris from the roadway. there was quite a bit of slowing yesterday as that happened. the rest of the bay shows a nice, smooth dry. south 680 builds. 92, we don't see the slowing like we did yesterday.

right now at 6:42, as we head to the north bay, we're checking out rohnert park at 36 degrees, it is clear, the wind is calm. but we'll start to see more clouds in the mix as we go into today and it's going to be another cool one as we start out with a winter feel. it will still feel like winter for the afternoon. we'll get a look at when it will feel like spring in just a few minutes. and it feels like more of a backup forming at the bay bridge toll plaza. we know that's going to happen. it's wednesday, a heavier commute than monday and tuesday. but relatively speaking, it's not a bad wednesday.

still tracking the crash along the roadside, the nimitz jammed up as a result. happening today, house speaker kevin mccarthy is expected to meet with taiwan president wen. he arrived in los angeles last night ahead of the sit-down. mccarthy's office says that it will most a bipartisan meeting at the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley. taiwan is a self-governing island that china claims as its territory. beijing leaders are objecting to that meeting before it was confirmed, saying that such talks could be a provocation. turning to decision 2023, voters for the first time in 15 years have given liberals the majority of the wisconsin supreme court. janet protasiewicz won yesterday's election, defeating the conservative, dan kelly. her election allows the court's liberal majority to have controlling votes on issues, including abortion rights, the

legislative maps and election administration. wisconsin is seen as a key battleground state in the 2024 presidential election. she was elected to a ten-year term. chicago has selected a new mayor. brandon johnson beat former chicago public school ceo paul vallas in the runoff election. during his victory speech, johnson called for a city government that works for the people of chicago. this morning, the popular south bay mushroom festival in morgan hill is being postponed. the festival is scheduled during memorial day weekend but it's being rescheduled for 2024. organizers say a security company they booked terminated their contract and they do not have enough time to find another company to support that large festival. organizers say, instead, they'll hold a smaller benefit concert. the concert will take place on may 27th at 4:30 p.m. at the morgan hill amphitheater. check out new drone video

out of monterey bay that shows two adult gray whales fending off an attack from more than 30 orcas. a tour agency released that video and says the exchange lasted six hours. the great whales survived the attack and ultimately swam to shallow waters. the national oceanic atmospheric administration says gray whales migrate from baja coast north during the spring and the journey makes them vulnerable to attacks from orcas. well, if you are thinking of traveling during the spring and summer, now is the time they say to book for the best fares. according to going.com, the travel expert says airline fares are down by 12% since their peak back in may of last year. they explain, if you have the flexibility, the cheapest days to travel on tuesday, wednesday and saturday. >> if you see a fare that you're comfortable with now, book it. do not wait. airfare doesn't act like retail,

it feels like winter as our temperatures start out in the upper 30s in the north bay, it's 36 in fairfield, even colder in los gatos, 34 degrees. so after this cold morning start, it's going to be a chilly day. as you're heading to work in burlingame, you're probably standing in front of the closet, i've exhausted my sweaters and pants and boots. find something else to wear because we're still going to have to deal with chilly temperatures. but at least we do see some sunshine in our forecast with a few clouds in the mix. there will be a storm system approaching. and as it moves in, it will be weakening. we're not expecting a significant storm here. it's going to be bringing us some scattered showers, starting out early on friday, and then tapering off by friday afternoon. there may still be lingering showers here and there for saturday morning, but the rest of the weekend is dry. so it's perfect for easter, and then we start out next week with the north bay getting another round of rain. but it does look like it dissipates as it continues to move in.

so other areas may not see rainfall going into early next week. so how much more rain will we see? we talked about how our reservoirs are full and we're also seeing high amounts of water and sierra snow. we're going to see another tenth to quarter inch of rain for most of us, but it could be higher for parts of northern sonoma county, as well as the santa cruz mountains, and our temperatures are still staying very cool, with walnut creek only reaching 70 degrees for one day. that's easter sunday, we get a very nice break from the cold temperatures, as well as some rain. so we're going to reach 70 next week. it goes right back down, feeling more like winter, with some low to mid 60s in the forecast. you can see that we have low 60s for today, mid-60s tomorrow, upper 60s and low 70s, briefly hitting 70 degrees on easter sunday. the north bay getting in on a chance of rain on monday.

so overall it's still cool and a little bit cooler than we typically see for mid-april. mike, you're still tracking a crash in fremont. >> yeah, it's on the shoulder. a couple of scattered vehicles. a little distraction but not as much as before. that's why traffic is flowing at a better pace past the scene. just folks in the slow lane are showing distraction and slowing. we have the backup back to stevenson and as things south clear, a little backup ripples. a little delayed wreak. 680 still holding, relatively steady south of the crash and the south bay looks just fine. here is the build coming out of hayward, more slowing into fremont. perhaps around the dumbarton bridge. you see the sensors changing as well. 680 through sunol, a little slow. volume builds off the dublin interchange. across 92, here is the san mateo bridge. bigger volume of traffic. we do have some slowing across the span but no major issues. the high-rise is incident free

this morning. over here, the bay bridge, the richmond bridge over to san rafael and highway 37, all show the westbound push and the build on westbound 80, the upper eastshore freeway, more traffic off of highway 4. pretty calm, so pleasant hill, a little dip in speeds toward the walnut creek interchange. here is the bay bridge toll plaza with a smooth flow of task. the hov lanes are clear but the backup is in the toll lanes and we know the pattern is okay to the metering lights and across the span. you'll just see slowing toward fremont street. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 6:50 right now. san francisco police are looking for a woman scheduled to board a cruise ship but never showed up. investigators say the 33-year-old, alaina adams, was set to leave from pier 27 monday night. she was reported missing after she didn't show. police say they currently have no evidence of foul play. adams is from out of state. if you have any information, you should call the san francisco

the el camino near mcclelland drive in south san francisco. video shows the person ended up dead in the middle of the road. our photographer at the scene did ask about the driver of the vehicle involved. police are so far not confirming whether this was a hit and run. the road is still shut down at this hour. we are following a developing story out of san francisco. a high profile bay area tech executive has been killed in a stabbing. sources tell nbc bay area bob lee was attacked early yesterday morning around 2:00. lee was the chief product officer of mobilecoin. former cto of square and one of the co-founders of cash app. the 43-year-old was stabbed on main street in the east cut neighborhood near the bay bridge. police say when officers arrived, they found a man had been stabbed, paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he later died. >> today the naacp of silicon valley and other community advocates will call for greater transparency about the drug

trafficking investigation into the san jose police officers association executive director. the 64-year-old, joanne segovia, will turn to court later this on the charges of ordering synthetic fentanyl and distribute them, sometimes using union resources. they will rally outside of san jose city hall at 2:00 this afternoon. >> happening today, students in san francisco plan to walk out of class in an effort to advocate for gun safety. the group, students demand action, is organizing today's national demonstration. the anti-gun violence organization was formed following the mass shootings at a school in parkland, florida. today's walkout starts at noon along sacramento street near the ucsf laurel heights campus. it comes more than a week after a mass shooting at a nashville school, three 9-year-olds and three staff members were killed. today, flood victims in pajaro will be getting some

when the wind picks up, it makes it feel colder. we'll see an increase in clouds tomorrow and we'll be getting ready for rain starting early on friday. a few scattered showers off and on throughout the day on friday, into early saturday. easter, it's clearing up and temperatures warm up into the upper 60s. even a few low 70s. then we start out next week with a little taste of spring that doesn't last that long. we'll be cooling down by the middle of next week. we'll take you back to the peninsula. i have to start with this closure, el camino is expected to continue to be closed, perhaps for hours, near mcclelland because of the deadly overnight crash. the investigation continues. now that the sun is up it's going to help as they take photos. avoid el camino through the stretch. you can use hillsdale. those are some options. getting over toward the east bay, everything is actually calm for most of the bay. we are recovering. 880 slows through hayward, toward fremont. at the bottom of the screen
