working, commuting, kids, the works. but they say there are solutions. even if you work in a traditional office setting, they say get up, move around, stretch every couple of hours. try to get the heart rate up and do some exercise. >> we have our watches which helps us a little bit. >> on the commercial breaks we're walking around. >> you should see us. quickly approaching 6:00 this morning. violence plagues the streets of san francisco. community members pushing for additional safety measures following the death of a top tech executive, and now we're learning about another high profile attack on a former san francisco fire commissioner. ahead, we dive deeper into the crime statistics. >> plus, turmoil in tennessee. republican legislators vote to remove two who protested gun violence on the chamber floor. and the bay area ties one of them has.

>> reporter: and it's the giants home opener. i'm cinthia pimentel live at oracle park. ahead we're breaking down the game day forecast, the new food and the event lineups this spring. this is "today in the bay." and a good morning to you on this friday. happy good friday to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in on the morning commute. a lot of people may be taking off. we'll see how busy it is. first, let's talk about the rain that made a comeback. >> it's in and out fairly quickly, and i know people are really concerned because we do have first pitch in a matter of hours. but look at the rain that's starting to back off a little bit for the north bay, some of the heavier rain shifting into the peninsula, as well as the east bay. as we get a closer look, stormranger showing heavier rain that will be approaching san mateo within the next few minutes. then the east bay, a lot of

yellows and reds over the tri-valley, as well as the delta. we'll see this coming through and moving out for the rest of late morning into the afternoon. so the good thing is that we're getting this rain, but it shouldn't impact your weekend plans. we'll get a look at temperatures and what's ahead in a few minutes. mike, you are getting poor visibility at the golden gate bridge. >> yeah, we have a blurry look because of the mist, the rain that's been hitting the bridge. wet roadways continue. we have a lighter volume of traffic around the bay. the metering lights were not on at the usual time coming out of oakland. we see the green highlighting, wet roadways, ponding and puddling, through san leandro and hayward. we talked about lighter traffic because it's spring break for some. we have good friday as well. we also have opening day. believe me, the home opener is the reason people take the day off as well. >> thanks, mike. calls for better crime fighting in san francisco are getting louder by the day
6:03 am
following an attack on a san francisco commissioner, and it comes just days after the deadly stabbing of a tech executive. we can now show you surveillance video of the moment it happened in hopes that you can help solve the crime. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom with more. they're still searching for that killer. >> reporter: there's still no suspect in custody and this happened tuesday morning, 2:30. the video is hard to watch but we want to show it to you because whomever stabbed bob lee to death is still at large. again, the video is disturbing. it is surveillance video that was obtained by dailymail.com. in it you see bob lee collapsing after he was stabbed there in an alcove, he tried to flag down a car to ask for help, he tries to use the keypad to call for help and nothing seems to work. we talked about someone who lives nearby in the rincon hill neighborhood who says that with crime being what it is in san francisco, he can understand why someone, a stranger, wouldn't feel safe enough to stop in the

middle of the street for somebody they didn't know. >> you've got to be careful who you open your door to. there are a lot of scammers. especially after 1:00 in the morning, i mean, you've really got to be careful what you're going to stop your car and get involved with. >> reporter: now, there is a memorial near where the 43-year-old tech executive died, and a person who works nearby told us that san francisco police did recover a knife nearby. while police are not revealing a lot of information publicly about this investigation, at a community meeting last night chief bill scott said they do have leads. >> bottom line is we do have some good things to follow up on this case and they are working tirelessly. >> we're going to get more into these numbers in a moment. but we'll tell you that overall crime is trending down in san francisco, however really violent crime like homicides went up since the pandemic. >> all right, kris. there is more to tell you about this morning. on the heels of that deadly
6:05 am
attack we are learning about another high profile case in san francisco. a man has been arrested for beating a former san francisco fire commissioner. now, friends of don carmignani, they tell us that he was attacked with a metal pipe on wednesday night. this is in the marina district. police say it happened near magnolia and laguna. a 24-year-old faces charges. friends say the former commissioner suffered a fractured skull, broken jaw, and had to get stitches on his face. >> he had a very serious surgery this afternoon and we're all praying for his safe recovery and as quickly as possible. >> amid these attacks, there are renewed questions about safety in san francisco. our investigative team compared current crime rates to last year during this time. it found homicides, robbery and assaults are all up slightly. burglaries and thefts have come down a bit. now to a developing story in

tennessee. republican rej slarts expelled two of the three lawmakers who protested gun violence on the chamber floor. justin pearson and justin jones both expelled yesterday. but republicans fell short in their bid to oust gloria johnson. gop members defended the decision saying they violated chamber rules when they held the gun protest on the house floor in the wake of the nashville school shooting. jones is a familiar face in the bay area, he was born here and headed to nashville. he went to college in tennessee on a scholarship for social activism. in 2013 we spoke to him at a rally at the federal courthouse in oakland where he was part of a protest over the acquittal of george zimmerman in the death of trayvon martin. he is now out of a job for a similar protest. >> america expels opposition, and it is a signal of authoritarianism and it is very dangerous. >> tennessee's republican

governor must set a special election to fill two now vacant seats. county commissions will select interim representatives to fill in. the two expelled lawmakers are able to run again for the same seats from which they were expelled. 6:06 this morning. the fallout from the early salmon season closure continues to plague the bay area. this morning congressman huffman, former house speaker nancy pelosi and local fishermen will be at the pier in san francisco, they're going to discuss the impact of the closure and efforts to receive federal disaster relief. this is the second time in history regulators have shut down an entire salmon fishing season due to low number of fish. regulators are blaming the low fish count on the drought. this morning the boys of summer are back in the bay. in just a few hours the san francisco giants hit their home field, taking on the kansas city royals. >> "today in the bay"'s cinthia pimentel is live at oracle park this morning tracking the important forecast, and also,
6:08 am
cinthia, is the rain still going on there? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. when we checked in the last hour, it was definitely coming down with a little more intensity. but right now it's more of that hairspray kind of mist coming down. so that begs the question, what does the forecast look like for that 1:35 pitch? we know it's san francisco and you have to dress warm, no matter what. let's take a look at some of the weather graphics. some game time, most of the rain we're seeing will still be moving around the bay area, the north bay is set to get the rest out of this system. about a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of rain. so nothing too crazy. it's not an atmospheric river, but it is enough to get the seats wet out here this morning and they have the fields covered just to get the game under way right on time at 1:35 this afternoon. the windshield wipers will be
6:09 am
on, maybe bring a poncho with you to stay dry and cozy. temperatures will be in the upper 50s with the wind gusting anywhere from 15 to 20 miles an hour. so definitely dress warm this afternoon. it will be cloudy skies as we go through the rest of the game. we're back out here live this morning, we'll be back in half an hour to tell you about all the new food items and the events coming up this spring. so don't go anywhere. we'll be back in a half hour with a check on that. >> now you're talking, you said food. hoping the game is going to be great, but you can't forget about that food. >> it sounds like the seagulls are waiting for the food. >> you can see how excited we are about the food as well. >> the birds are happy the fans will be back. you've got to get to the game. let's check in with mike with a look at the roadways. overall lighter traffic, but a lot of traffic going for that destination. look at the maps. we're talking about the entire bay, probably converging over
6:10 am
here -- i'm exaggerating a bit, but everybody is excited about the home opener at oracle park. it's just off the water's edge. i want to note the 3rd street bridge, but if you're not driving then you don't have to deal with the congestion on king street for the 280 extension. caltrain will take you a block away, b.a.r.t. will get you there toward the embarcadero or montgomery, you can walk to oracle, 20-minute walk, or the n judah will take you over. the san francisco ferry announced that they're going to be doing service again directly to oracle park, but not today. today is a day game, so you cannot take the ferry to the special terminal for the giants. you can use the bridge if you do drive. >> what would we do without you, mike? thanks, mike. 6:10.
6:11 am
next on "today in the bay," we break down the top ten colleges to attend if you're keen on making high earnings. you'll be surprised which schools did and didn't make the list. >> and brand new into our newsroom t latest job numbers showing the health of the economy. we will go over those numbers. out to the futures. now, remember, these reflect monday because the stock market is closed today for the good friday holiday.
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
good friday morning. it is 6:13. we're taking a look at stormranger showing light showers across much of the bay area. some of the heavier rain shifting off to the east. for the morning drive across the san mateo bridge, it is cloudy, roads are still wet. we'll stay in the 50s throughout the morning into the afternoon. much better for the weekend. we'll get a look at that in a few minutes. we were talking about the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge, but i want to show you the fresh rain hitting the lens. the camera for san rafael, the taillights move smoothly, all the way from santa rosa toward san francisco. good morning. very happy friday to you. the stock markets are closed today for the good friday holiday. bloomberg reporting that tesla is cutting prices on some of its cars again. big news, though, jobs friday. 236,000 jobs added in the month of march. unemployment rate drops back to near historic lows, from 3.6% to
6:15 am
3.5%. the participation rate has returned to pre-pandemic levels. the stock market can't respond to that until monday. the participation rate is super interesting. more people searched for and found jobs, that pushes the unemployment rate lower. now, it's mostly the 236,000 we care about, that is a smaller number than march. the fed is trying to slow the economy down to fight inflation. so in that sense, the jobs numbers went the right direction, they went down. it's been difficult for the fed to tame the economy in a growing economy. americans want to work and spend. a study at stanford finds california is the place to be if you want to work in artificial intelligence. that's not unexpected. the top ai firms are located here. texas and washington, d.c. also hot spots. universities, though, still lead the way with the most research. the irs got another $80 billion
6:16 am
as part of the inflation reduction act, and it has decided what to do with the money. in part it's going to increase audits on people earning more than $400,000 a year, as well as corporations. the irs is badly understaffed, with fewer workers now than it did have ten years ago, even as there are more americans and they're paying taxes, and the tax code is more complicated. another goal on the irs's list is to actually be a functional customer service, where if you called 1-800 whatever, a human would pick up the phone and give you an actual answer. good luck with that now. >> i don't know too many places you can call and actually get someone on the phone. >> particularly government things, but everything, yeah. so imagine state of the art customer service where they could answer any question for free. that's what they want to do. >> we'll be waiting. >> on hold. >> baited breath. >> with some nice music,
6:17 am
perhaps. 6:16 right now. new this morning electric car drivers will have more charging options, this time from walmart. the retailer just announced it's planning to add ev charging stations at thousands of its stores by 2030. walmart also said it's currently in the process of looking for suppliers. in the bay area there are walmarts in the east bay, the south bay, but we don't yet know which locations will be getting those charging stations. also new this morning, the start of college acceptance season, and we're inching closer to graduation season as well. and one thing all students will likely consider, how much money they'll earn after college. >> that is a big question. where you go to school may also play an important role with that. according to a new "new york times" analysis, two california schools are among the top ten when it comes to graduates earning the most. the number one out there is california institute of technology, the median income for ten years after graduation
6:18 am
is just more than $112,000. stanford ranked eighth with graduates making $97,000 ten years after attendance. no ivy league school made it into the top ten, which is interesting. >> stanford was eighth, wow. >> my first job, as, like, you know, a reporter, it was $13,000. isn't that crazy? >> $19,500. >> i made $19,000, my first weather job. weather people, we make so much more. [ laughter ] >> all right, yeah, we're earning the money today, because we have another storm. >> you are, for sure. >> we've been tracking all of these storms coming in, and this one is a good one. it's bringing us beneficial rainfall without all of the issues, as we track it on stormranger, and we are seeing the spotty showers moving into the north bay and a little bit
6:19 am
of heavier rain down the peninsula into the east bay. overall we're going to see much of this activity between now and 9:00, and then rain chances will be going down. as we get a look at some of the yellows and reds here on stormranger moving through the tri-valley toward parts of contra costa county, we are seeing it easing up around concord, but still raining quite a bit around brentwood and antioch. looking at the wider view, we can see a lot of this is continuing to move quickly and may bring us about a tenth to a quarter inch of rainfall, and then farther to the north still light showers, but the dryer air will start to come in as we go into around the noon hour. so we can see still by 10:00 there's some light rain across parts of the north bay and especially the peninsula. not as much for the south bay. and even at 1:30 we know we're watching this very quickly, there still may be one last lingering shower for the city before it moves out, and we're going to possibly have a wet start to the game.
6:20 am
but those rain showers will be very light. so it shouldn't interrupt any of your plans. and we're going to see temperatures today reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s. tomorrow it's going to be a little bit warmer, especially in the south bay, near 70 degrees. and it's about the same on easter sunday as we look ahead, there will be a couple more storm systems moving in. definitely a push of some colder air, but we're not expecting any significant storms next week. so let me show you brentwood. our temperature trend that warms up for a couple of days, mid-70s between sunday and monday, and then we're right back down to the mid-60s the middle of next week. even beyond that period, it's going to continue to feel like spring, the blast of winter doesn't last long. we'll be keeping an eye on that. mike, you have a heads-up for commuters for the dumbarton bridge. >> typically the odds are on the san mateo bridge, but it's 84 right now where we're hearing about a crash mid-span in the
6:21 am
commute direction. if you travel west across the dumbarton bridge, take a few minutes to watch the traffic flow on our website and you can see if there's any issues that develop after the crash. the san mateo bridge, i'll show you again, kind of soupy conditions. misty and drizly conditions, moving smoothly. the volume is starting to pick up. you see brake-tapping going on. the bay bridge does not have any metering lights, and the build for 37 and highway 4. wet roadways are the bigger issue. the backup at the toll plaza is not a problem. there isn't one. back to you. >> at all. thanks. teeing off on the gridiron, no, you didn't hear me wrong. next on "today in the bay," the new golfing experience you can take part in at levi's stadium. take part in at levi's stadium. we're goingo tell t

6:25 am
>> see? >> be sure to work out those abs this weekend if you watch. molly shannon and jonas brothers. you can watch it right here on nbc bay area at 8:30, and then again at 11:30 right after nbc bay area news at 11:00. >> and if you didn't catch it, molly giving a nod in mary katherine gallagher. she should be a lot of fun. also trending, with the masters this weekend, many golfers will have their eyes on augusta. >> bob redell is going to be busy this weekend because most of the eyes are on levi's stadium. >> there will be no touchdowns at levi's stadium this weekend, just hole-in-ones -- i'm not even near the hole. >> loser!
6:26 am
>> reporter: that's pathetic. i've got brian graham here with upper deck golf. you've taken levi's stadium and turned it into a nine-hole course. how does this compare to a top golf? >> you're actually playing a round of golf within the stadium, hitting shots from all different levels to different flags set up throughout the field. >> how does the scoring work? you can't go on the field and finish out your putt. >> definitely not. you're hitting your shot from different holes throughout the field onto different flags, and the scoring system, you can get a birdie, a par or bogey made on where your ball ends up. so you can keep score throughout your round with your buddy. >> see that? i'm, like, eight feet away from the hole. >> that's called a birdie right there. >> reporter: go to upperdeckgolfing.com to get tee times and bring your friends.
6:27 am
they've got stuff going on at the club level and this is through saturday. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> should be fun. 6:26 this morning. the top stories we're following here on "today in the bay," including helping locals make it in the bay. we're going to tell you about a new fresh food pilot program that is now available for low income families. how it's aimed to help keep more fruit and vegetables on your table. >> reporter: plus, we're about to find out if the head of san jose's police officers association, who faces criminal drug trafficking charges, will be fire. i'm emma goss outside of po ahead quarters in san jose. i'll tell you what mario!o! woo-o-hoo! right now at 6:30, in a matter of hours we'll learn the fate of the san jose police union's executive director. could she be out of a job? it comes after she was charged with drug trafficking. we'll have a live report on what is expected to be released today in regards to the internal investigation. >> plus, justice for jasper wu. aapi a advocate groups are callg for the alameda county's top prosecutor out. the reason community leaders say she's being insensitive and the new push community leaders are making to ensure justice is served. this is "today in the bay."
6:31 am
good friday morning to you. thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. it is a busy morning for us here on "today in the bay." but we want to make sure that you squeeze in some fun. >> that's right. get your orange out this morning, including the giants home opener. look at that. ahead, cinthia pimentel will join us live from oracle park. she's talking to one of the stadium's top leaders with more on what fans can expect to see this season. >> we'll have more on that in just a bit. now let's tune into meteorologist kari hall, because she is looking ahead on the morning conditions. i'm looking at it and i know what the green means. >> there's rain, and i know people are watching this closely because we're going to have thousands of people outside in just a few hours for the giants home opener for later this morning into the afternoon. so take a look at stormranger right now, showing that we are getting some wet weather coming in, especially for the east bay. but this has been rolling across
6:32 am
the bay area and we'll be moving out as we go into late morning into the afternoon, as some of those light showers continue to linger. as we go throughout the day, also, looking at about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain, but most of that happening within the next few hours. so we'll take a look at that giants home opener forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. 6:31. in just a few hours the san jose police officers association will announce a decision whether or not to fire their executive director. this after she was charged for drug trafficking. >> this is a story we have been following from the start. "today in the bay"'s emma goss is live for us from the police union headquarters. emma, you have more on the next face of this investigation. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. this could be joanne segovia's last day as the executive director of the san jose police officers association, depending on what the poa decides to do. she's served in this role for the past 20 years and was put on
6:33 am
leave last month. they were also going to learn the outcome of phase one of the poa's internal investigation into segovia's alleged criminal conduct. she's accused of trafficking opioids across the country for nearly a decade and she allegedly received 61 shipments of synthetic fentanyl to her san jose home since 2015 and is accused of distributing drugs to other states, sometimes using union resources. the poa has hired an independent outside investigator to launch phase two of the internal investigation and the big question the investigation is now seeking to answer are whether and to what extent poa resources were used in segovia's alleged drug trafficking and how this went unnoticed for years. they'll be looking into whether current internal controls could have caught this sooner and the poa will be announced whotheye

investigation in the comes days. if convicted, segovia could face up to 20 years in prison. emma goss for "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:33 right now. bay area aapi community members are demanding an apology and transparency. they say that alameda county district attorney pamela price was, quote, condescending and divisive. this is an email sent to community members asking about the jasper wu case. the 2-year-old was killed in the crossfire of a gang battle in november of 2021. there have been reports that the d.a. plan to drop enhancements against the three people arrested in that case. but in the email obtained by nbc bay area and allegedly written by price, the community is told that they've been misled by local chinese community and the media. >> the way it was addressed was to the chinese community, which we found to be an othering type statement, where we are being

differentiated. >> nbc bay area did not have the opportunity to ask d.a. price questions, and she did not respond to the station's request for an interview. however, price did release a recorded message. >> i want to clear the record. i assured the parents of jasper wu that the men we believe are responsible for his death are charged with very serious crimes and they will be held accountable. >> now, on monday several east bay organizations are going to hold a rally calling for justice for jasper wu. now to a follow-up on the poisoning death of an east bay woman at a bay area senior center. letitia starling is set to appear in a martinez courtroom this morning for a preliminary hearing. starling faces charges of elder abuse resulting in death. her 94-year-old dementia patient died last august after drinking cleaning solution at atria

senior living center in walnut creek. her family says it is the facility, not the worker that should be charged. two other seniors also died last august at an atria location in san mateo. a new program is helping californians eat healthier and make it in the bay. the pilot program matches up to $60 a month for low income families to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. it comes after the calfresh food benefits introduced during the pandemic ended back in february amid rising prices due to inflation. the locations that accept the benefits include the farmers markets in north bay, as well as oakland and the food center in san jose. the weekend is here and so is the home opener for the san francisco giants. >> first pitch, 1:35 this afternoon against the kansas city royals. when giants fans arrive at the ballpark they're going to notice a few changes off the field. "today in the bay"'s cinthia pimentel is live at oracle park. tell us what fans can expect
6:37 am
this afternoon. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. we are so excited, we are gearing up, and also feeling a little hungry to get this season under way. i'm joined by the executive vice president of business operations. welcome to "today in the bay," and welcome to the home opener. how are you feeling this morning? >> welcome to oracle park and opening day. this is like a national holiday today for us. >> congratulations. now, it's around breakfast time, many people at home are watching. have you had a chance to try any of the new menu items to get people excited? >> i have. it's a little tough to talk about this early in the morning. wu know we have garlic fries and we have our crab sandwich. this year we have crab fries. it's fresh crab on french fries with seasoning. that's our item that everyone is raving about. really excited about that. but our ballpark is known for food. >> world famous garlic fries.
6:38 am
and the ghiradelli ice cream and chocolate. >> very popular. >> awesome. we also hear it's your 50th anniversary with the organization. congratulations. >> thank you. >> we hope this season is everything you dreamed of and more. what are your hopes and visions for oracle park this season, for you, for the fans, anyone coming out? >> there's something special on opening day, it's like the beginning of a new season, life is good again, it's a 162-game season. but especially with the winter we just had, just to get spring and summer on the way, i think it's exciting. for me personally, i've been with the giants for 50 years and i started as a bat boy in 1973, so this might be the career i choose, and it's time to do something else. it's been a wonderful run and it's a great business, and obviously we've had so much excitement in this ballpark, and before this at candlestick park. i'm excited because you never know what's going to happen. we have a bunch of new players we're going to introduce to the crowd today.
6:39 am
everything starts at 12:45, be in your seats. the weather is going to clear up. that's what they're telling us. and we have great surprises because we never tell our secrets of what the ceremony is going to be. come out, you don't want to miss this. there's a few tickets still left. not many. come out to the ballpark and we'll get you in. >> i can feel the excitement already, and i'm so excited for everyone to come out here this afternoon. marcus and laura, we are going to wrap for the time being. we're going to wait for the fans to get out and join us and we'll see you back here at midday with more on what's going on here at the giants home opener. for now, cinthia pimentel, "today in the bay." >> you know what's cool with mario, year after year, he's always excited. i wish him well from us. thanks, cinthia. but the rain is coming down. >> and they have the field all covered up. >> it's not going to be a rainout. >> no, and we're seeing the system moving through fairly quickly. we're looking at stormranger right now and still seeing the
6:40 am
rain coming through with most of it over the next few hours. it will be starting to roll out of here in time for first pitch. still a slight chance that we could see some light rain coming through, but that shouldn't dampen the spirits as we go into the rest of today, staying mostly cloudy. it's only going to be in the mid-50s and it's going to be windy and you may be just a little damp from the earlier morning showers, especially around the stands. this weekend, we'll see still some dryer weather coming in and the clouds lingering. we have the cherry blossom festival happening in san francisco and japantown. we're going to see the sun starting to peek out as we go into the afternoon, but we'll be cloudy most of the day. also, we're going to see about the same in ba knee sha this weekend. it's going to be in the low 50s to start so you may want a nice warm jacket and you may keep it on throughout the day. you're packing layers. if you're going to palisades tahoe, you might want to wait
6:41 am
