good morning. thanks for starting your weekend off with us. this morning, the future of the abortion pill in the country could be in doubt. >> that's right. two rulings overnight by two separate federal judges are leading to a show down at the

lawmakers expelled for leading a rail rally for stiffer gun laws on the chamber floor. what's next? all that, plus frightening fall. several huge trees topple over at the masters during friday's play. crashing dangerously close to spectators. thankfully everyone was okay and play is set to resume. today, saturday, april 8th, 2023. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with peter alexander and kristen welker. welcome to "today." thank you for joining us on saturday morning. seeing the trees fall at the masters is surreal and thank goodness everyone's okay. >> the best thing for the spectators who had to scramble out of the way is they heard the trees creaking. the grounds at augusta national were saturated by the storms
5:33 am
that moved through. there is a lot more stormy weather in the forecast today. it could complicate things as they try to resume the second round at the masters. we will have more on that and what it means for the folks who are hitting the roads ahead of this easter holiday coming up. we begin with the breaking news overnight. two conflicting rulings about the future of the abortion pill. a federal judge in texas suspending the fda long-time approval of the drug mifepristone, but giving the government a week to appeal. at the same time, the federal judge in washington state issued a conflicting ruling protecting access to the drug in 17 states and washington, d.c. nbc's legal correspondent laura jarrett is here to break it down. laura, this is complicated. what do people need to know? >> reporter: kristen, good morning. sweeping decision from the judge in texas, if upheld, could make it harder to access the pill for
5:34 am
medical abortions. it has been on the books for 20 years. the practical short-term impact of the decision remains to be seen. as of now, the pill continues to be available. the judge has given the biden administration seven days to get an appeals court to weigh in. president biden weighed in saying quote, if this ruling were to stand, then there would be no prescription approved by the fda to be safe from the political and ideological attacks. also overnight, kristen, the justice department filed a notice of appeal hoping the fifth circuit would put the texas order on hold while the case plays out. unclear how the high court will unrule. on top of this, the competing ruling from washington state is a different lawsuit. it is about the same drug. there, the judge says the fda cannot make any changes to the availability of the pill. only in 17 blue states plus the district of columbia that filed
5:35 am
suit. it potentially sets up conflicting orders on how to treat this drug at least in those 18 states. >> just extraordinary how quickly the news was coming in overnight. laura, given what you said, the two conflicting rulings -- will this go to the supreme court? is that where it ends? >> reporter: it seems likely these cases will land on the high court's door step. it is a matter of how fast and that depends on when the lower courts rule. kristen. >> laura jarrett, we appreciate your perspective. you had a long week. thank you for being here. vice president kamala harris made a trip to nashville on friday to meet with tennessee democrats the day after the statehouse expelled two black democratic lawmakers for protesting gun violence on the floor of the statehouse. we will speak with one expelled

law maker in a moment. first, we have priscilla thompson with more from nashville. >> reporter: peter, good morning. that meeting came hours after the debate on the house floor and demonstrations that flooded the halls of the capitol. the lawmakers are now continuing to fight on gun reform and the white house is with them. a show of solidarity. vice president kamala harris meeting with the tennessee three. lawmakers who took to the statehouse floor to demand action on guns. two of them were ousted as a result. president biden also spoke with the trio. thanking them for their leadership and inviing them to the white house. the meetings come amid growing fallout after the gop controlled statehouse expelled two black lawmakers for their actions. while representative gloria johnson was allowed to stay. >> i don't know what else they want. >> reporter: the trio was accused of breaking house rules and disorderly behavior.
5:37 am
>> no action. >> reporter: after protesting for stricter gun laws in the well of the chamber. days after the nashville school shooting which left six peopleo dead. republican lowell russell voted to epel jones and pearson, but not johnson. >> she didn't shout or bring the megaphone in or use the megaphone or engage the people in the gallery. >> reporter: but jones says this type of action has never been taken against white colleagues who he says have committed far more severe infractions. >> one was an admitted child molester. >> reporter: the concern echoed by pearson. >> end all and be all of the house. that needs to be applied to everyone. >> reporter: jones calling the expulsions a political lynching.
5:38 am
>> a state in which the kkk was founded is now attempting another power grab by silencing the two youngestrepublicans. >> they did not look at the members. >> reporter: still, their actions are drawing widespread condemnation from democrats across the country. including president biden calling them shocking and without precedent. the futures of the lawmakers could be in the hands of voters determined by the special election should they decide to run again. as we await that special election, counties will appoint interim representatives in the meantime. metro council has is scheduled a meeting monday where the vote is expected to reinstate justin jones immediately. kristen and peter.
5:39 am
>> priscilla thompson, thank you. the question is what happens next? we want to bring in one of the men at the center of this. the recently expelled state representative justin jones. mr. jones, thank you for being with us. good morning. >> good morning. thank you for having me. >> you said this week as we heard you that this is a grave day for democracy and it sends a dangerous precedent. expulsion of you and one of your colleagues there. why do you think this happened and how do you think it should be resolved? >> again, i come to you as a representative in exile because a majority white caucus decided to expel the two youngest black lawmakers. it sends a message if it happens here, it can happen anywhere. this is because we have a party and speaker of the house who is drunk with power and who is fearful of opposition voices and
5:40 am
dissent. his role is to silence the voices. >> mr. jones, how does this get resolved? >> you know, looking forward, there are legal challenges and the local council can appoint a temporary interim representative. there is also a special election which, you know, i will plan to run in. what will resolve this is us challenging the attack on democrat as -- democracy. it is not just us, but those protesting against the mass shootings that happened a week ago in nashville. we stand up for democracy and remove the undemocratic forces from the state government. >> let me ask you, the republican house speaker says this has nothing to do with race. he says it is because you violated the house rules and staged a protest on the house floor at the time when the emotions were already running high in the wake of that mass
5:41 am
shooting. what do you make of and what do you say to the speaker's argument? >> i think you can see for yourself the two youngest black lawmakers kicked out and colleague who was with us was not. what is happening in tennessee with the speaker of the house and members of his party engaged in criminal activity and unethical activity and never he can expelled. we were expelled for standing with these people and the speaker of the house assaults democracy. >> mr. jones, we saw the awful killing of six individuals and gun violence at the school there in nashville. among them three children. you are advocating for tougher gun laws. the republican controlled statehouse and republican leadership is trying to do the opposite. they want to loosen gun laws and
5:42 am
make an effort to carry a gun without a permit when you are as young as 18. how does this change? >> it changes as these thousands who are here for the past two weeks continue to show up and let them know these are not -- these are measures not supported by the extremists, but the majority of tennesseeans. universal background checks and ban on assault weapons. these are things we have to force them to do. by us continuing to show up and people gathered here on monday. these protests are not stopping because these young people and this is an issue of life and death. they want to feel safe in the school. it will be resolved when the speaker stops being beholdened to the nra. >> representative justin jones. we will continue to watch.
