it. enjoying that heat. >> we'll get to al's forecast in just a bit. first, nbc's guad venegas has made his way to flood-ravaged ft. lauderdale. hey, guad. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. it was a rough night for travelers flying in and attempting to fly out of ft. lauderdale international airport. you can see behind me, it's pretty much a lake out there on the runway from where we're at on the terminal as far as the highway. which is a higher elevation. that was the only highway to get in and out of this international airport, with a lot of the vehicles in the roadways and the surrounding areas stuck in water. and of course, this runway and this airport still shut down because of the flooding. overnight, a torrential downpour sent swaths of florida into a flash flood emergency, leaving drivers in ft. lauderdale stranded and desperate for help in stunning scenes like this. >> in reference a vehicle stuck in the floodwater. caller advised they don't know how to swim. >> reporter: the national weather service warning of a life-threatening situation.

>> it's going to get worse and worse and worse, and the cars are getting stuck in here. and when they get stuck here, it's a total loss. >> reporter: no casualties have been reported, but the deluge of water coupled with tornado warnings shut down ft. lauderdale international airport, leaving frustrated travelers stranded with no way out. >> all right. that noise is a tornado watch. as you can see, the waters are not receding, so it's going to be a long night. do send help to ft. lauderdale airport. >> reporter: the city of ft. lauderdale says it is designed to handle 3 inches of rain within a 24-hour period, but more than 20 inches poured down over parts of south florida in just six hours, all during florida's dry season. while the southeast was soaked overnight, up north, new york got a sunbath instead of april showers. the temperature yesterday, 23 degrees above average. >> taking off everything. this is it. i'm wearing a t-shirt for the first time in six or seven months. it's fantastic. perfect day. >> reporter: the summer-like

weather stretches from the northeast to the upper midwest. records were broken in dozens of cities, including denver and minneapolis. while in new jersey, wildfires scorched nearly 4,000 acres. firefighters got the upper hand on the blaze yesterday, hoping it won't spread further. a tale of two weather realities across the country today. and we did catch a break from the rain here in south florida, as you can see, with some of those travelers still stranded and a lot of these terminals, they spent the night there and they are expecting to fly out at some point today. the latest report does indicate that the airport here is expected to remain closed throughout the morning and perhaps if that water recedes, it could open this afternoon. savannah, hoda? >> guad, thank you. let's say good morning to al. boy, those stunning images out of florida. >> we thought we would see maybe 8 to 9 inches out of this thing and it just sat there. this is the problem with a warming climate. you've got a really warm water temperatures, warmer and that atmosphere can hold much more

precipitation. and for today, we are going to be looking at 11 million people at risk, damaging hail, tornadoes possible. more rain, especially along the eastern shore of florida, but also, into the southeast. we're looking at maybe another 2 to 4 more inches, but that will mostly be in the southeast. florida hopefully not seeing too much more of that rain. now to the heat. we're talking highs today, 80s, 70s. 155 million of us are going to see temperatures above 80 degrees. it's a summer preview. in fact, you look at these temperatures. detroit, 26 degrees above average at 84. witchta, 82. hartford, connecticut, near 90. and in fact, we've got potential records today stretching from minneapolis down to concordia. look at minneapolis. maybe getting to 90 degrees today. that shattered their record. new york city will come close. same with lynchburg. tomorrow, those temperatures move to the east. last day of record highs for possibly minneapolis, cleveland, charleston, concord. we see temperatures actually

starting to cool down, but still staying nice and seasonable into the beginning of next week. 64 new york city. 68 d.c. monday, indianapolis, you'll have a temperature of 59 degrees. savannah? >> al, we'll check back. thank you. now to that breaking news overnight tied to the battle over a commonly used abortion pill. a federal appeals court has now blocked part of a ruling issued by a texas judge last week that endangered access to mifepristone, the name of the drug. nbc's senior legal correspondent laura jarrett joins us with more. this has to do with the texas ruling, which it had effectively banned the use of this drug, which is commonly used in medically induced abortions. what does this fifth circuit ruling do? >> what people need to know is waking up this morning is that you still have access to the drug, it's going to be harder to get. that's because of the way the district court actually fixed that ruling last friday. he not only invalidated the original approval of that drug that dates back 23 years ago, he also invalidated a bunch of loosening of the restrictions

that the fda put in place. for instance, during covid, it said, you don't have to come in person to get the drug. you can get it through the mail. and that's what the court of appeals, the fifth circuit has done. it's targeted those loosening of restrictions that happened post-2016, about. the original approval, that's still good. but all of the things that you could do to try to get the drug easier, that's still now blocked. it's as if the court of appeals re-ran the clock back to the year 2000, as of saturday morning. the thing you need to know that's making this a little tricky is we still have that outstanding decision from a different district court, same authority, in washington state. and in that case, the judge said, you have to maintain access in the exact same way as it currently exists. those two are still in conflict, as of saturday morning. and that's why we think this case is likely headed to the supreme court. >> so just to be clear, you

know, they have struck down these more recent rules that, as you said, expanded access to this drug. you could get it by mail, you didn't need to see the doctor three times or what have you. will there be an appeal of that then? and could that be stayed so that things kind of stay status quo with regard to all of it? it gets very confusing. >> it does. the best way to think about it is this decision is 42 pages. it's quite long and detailed. the way that the court is doing it, i think the biden s stl going to be uncomfortable with. it's still sort of targeting fda's authority. so i think you're going to see the biden administration, for legal and political reasons, anything that makes it look like you can't get access to this abortion bill, the biden administration is going to want to challenge that in court. and i think that's why you're going to see it still go up to the supreme court. >> the ten-second version is, this is probably going to the supreme court. >> but you still have access to the pill, as of right now. >> for the moment. thank you, laura, appreciate it. meantime, guys, new details have emerged overnight about one of the largest leaks of classified u.s. intelligence in years. so there is a new report revealing who may be the possible source. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander joins us from dublin.

that is where president biden is in the middle of this tour of ireland. hey, peter, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. nbc news has learned that president biden and other top officials were dismayed when they first found out that these classified documents have been online for at least a month. the justice department has launched a criminal investigation into the leaks and this morning, a white house official tells me, given the sensitivity of the information, the disclosures here have alarmed many people across the u.s. government. new details this morning about the supposed leaker of highly classified documents. a the leak of sensitive military secrets, some of which owe a pessimistic u.s. view of the war in ukraine, has rocked capitals from the u.s. to moscow. "the washington post" in details that nbc news has not independently verified says it's interviewed two members of a private community on discord, a social media platform popular with video gamers, where the open source investigative group

bellingcat says the documents appeared in early march. the post quotes two members of the discord group, including one who is a minor. they say the leaker told them he worked on a military base but did not identify which one. the supposed leaker, "the post" reports, is a young charismatic gun enthusiast, searching for companionship amid the isolation of the pandemic. he began posting messages to the chat room last year that referenced military jargon and in the following months posted messages that appeared to transcribe classified information. here's one of those members speaking anonymously to "the post." >> i don't think that there was a goal nor some sort of accomplishment he was looking for in sharing these documents. of course, there is some anti-government sentiment. he is not a russian operative. he is not a ukrainian operative. i'll go as far to say he's not even on the east side of the world. >> reporter: president biden this morning responding to questions about the leaks.

>> could you give an update on that leak investigation? >> there is a full blown investigation going on. i'm concerned that it happened but there's nothing contemporaneous that i'm aware of. >> reporter: this morning, nbc news has also learned the biden administration is looking at expanding how it monitors social media sites and chat rooms after u.s. intelligence agencies fail to spot these classified documents that were circulating online for weeks. that's according to a senior administration official and a congressional official briefed on the matter. that's the latest from here on a blustery balcony in dublin. hoda, back to you. >> peter alexander for us in ireland. thanks. now to the latest on that mass shooting at a louisville bank. the city holding a vigil last night, paying tribute to those who were killed and wounded. and for the first time, we are hearing chilling 911 calls, some from the employees who were trapped inside that bank. another from the gunman's own mother. nbc's morgan chesky in

louisville for us again. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. every new piece of evidence has come out has painted a more frightening picture. that body cam video showed the chaos of what was happening outside this bank, but these new 911 calls paint a chilling portrait of what was happening on the inside. not only that, but we hear from the gunman's own mother who warned police that something may have gone horribly wrong. >> 911 operator, where is your emergency? >> my son might be -- he has a gun and headed towards the old national. >> reporter: this morning, chilling 911 audio from the mother of the louisville shooter as the deadly rampage was unfolding. >> i don't know what to do. i need your help. i think -- he's never hurt anyone. he's a really good kid. >> reporter: the mother called authorities to warn them about her son. sharing his roommate told her something was wrong. >> he's nonviolent. he's never done anything. please. >> and you don't believe he owns guns? >> i know he doesn't own any guns.

>> reporter: the mother unaware of the purchase just six days earlier when police say the gunman legally bought an ar-15. the family telling nbc their son suffered from mental health challenges, but there were never any warning signs. from inside the bank, more calls pouring into 911. >> i'm in the closet with one person. i hear -- i hear gunshots. >> is that shots fired? >> yes, yes. >> okay, just stay quiet. >> reporter: the first 911 call coming from outside the building. the caller witnessing the horror unfold on a video conference call. >> we heard multiple shots and everybody started saying, oh, my god, and then he came into the board room. >> reporter: the attack left five people dead and eight others injured. one of them rookie police officer nicklolas wilt. the 26-year-old just days into his job, struck in the head before his partner fired the fatal shot, killing the gunman.

late wednesday, hundreds of mourners took part in a vigil just blocks away from the crime scene. kentucky governor andy bashir emotional about losing one of his friends and having to tell his wife. >> this person murdered my friend. calling your friend's wife, who is also your friend, to tell her her husband is gone is amongst the hardest things i have ever done. >> reporter: this morning, if there's been any silver lining since this tragedy, it's been the hospital has announced every day these patients wounded or injured have been released. at last check, two patients remain in the hospital. one in fair, the other 26-year-old officer nicholas wilt in krit congressional but stable condition. savannah? >> what a shame. morgan, thank you very much. meantime, calls are growing longer for longtime senator dianne feinstein to step down, some from members of her own party. the groundbreaking lawmaker absent from washington for nearly two months due to illness. nbc's capitol hill correspondent

ryan nobles has the details. good morning. >> good morning. senator dianne feinstein insists that she has no plans to step down, but overnight, she did ask to be temporarily replaced on the powerful senate judiciary committee and some of her fellow democrats are worried that her extended absence is standing in the way of important work that needs to be done here in washington. >> reporter: senator dianne feinstein has not cast a vote in the u.s. senate since early february. the california democrat was hospitalized with shingles and despite being released has not been well enough to fly back to washington. i intend to return as soon as possible once my medical team advises that it's safe for me to travel, she promised in a statement last night. but just how soon that may be remains unclear. and now some democrats are calling for her to step aside. it's time for senator feinstein to resign, tweeted california congressman, ro khanna, adding, we need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty. while she's had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her

duties. the 89-year-old feinstein already facing questions about her health and mental stamina announced last month she would not seek re-election in 2024, but promised to finish her term. the new calls for her to step down are in part because of her role on the judiciary committee. more than a dozen biden judicial nominations have been stalled waiting for her to return. in a statement, majority leader chuck schumer's spokesperson said the leader will ask the senate to, quote, allow another democratic senator to temporarily serve on the judiciary committee. a move that republicans will likely stand in the way of. meanwhile, feinstein isn't the only senator to have recently faced health struggles. senate republican minority leader mitch mcconnell was absent for the senate for multiple weeks last month after falling and being treated for a concussion. and democratic senator john fetterman was out for more than a month after checking himself into the hospital to receive treatment for clinical

overnight. it happened in oakland on interstate 580. what is the latest, pete? >> reporter: good morning, laura. yeah, another east bay freeway shooting, this time on 580 west in oakland. we did just get an update from chp. they are telling us it took place just before midnight, around 11:55 last night. the cars involved exited after that shooting, they exited at lakeshore avenue on the east side of lake merritt. they said one car crashed into the pole. the driver died on scene, and it's unclear if it was from the gun shots or from the driver crash into the pole. they do not know the motive behind the shooting, and no arrests have been made. we will bring you new updates as they come in. >> thanks for the latest there,

hailey and hanna, good morning >> good morning! >> good morning! >> what a year it has been for you guys what a busy couple of years. so talk to us about this you helped the hurricanes to get to the elite eight your college basketball careers were on fire one year left of eligibility, and you made the stunning announcement that you'll leave college basketball why? >> i think after playing all four years later together, we just decided that there are more opportunities besides basketball obviously. such a difficult position to b in because we wanted to take our fifth year to play and continue, but i think it came down to just optimizing all the opportunities we have ahead of pups. >> and speaking of those opportunities, college players can be paid to be nil deals, the name, image, and likeness, and you were two of the biggest and at the forefront of the ncaa players being able to get paid for what they do, essentially. how much has that changed your lives? >> it's definitely changed a lot.

it's kind of cull circle we started nil in new york and here we are kind of ending it in new york i was saying that on the plane ride over here but i think just being able to optimize and being able to monetize as a student athlete, especially female athletes, because not everybody has the opportunity to go pro. so i think we'll be prime examples to show people what you can do after college with nil experience >> so, you know, basketball helped build your following and then you had viral videos and you took off and it catapulted you guys into fame you have millions of followers on tiktok and instagram. but now you're leaving basketball so are you choosing the money over the sport >> i wouldn't say i'm choosing the money over the sport i think we had a great career. without covid, we wouldn't have the opportunity to go back for a fifth year just positioning ourselves to be successful beyond the years of college sports, being a female athlete, there's very little chance to go pro and be very successful for women's basketball, so i think being able to show the younger

generation if you prioritize nil in college, you can set yourself up for success beyond basketball or beyond your sport >> you know, the canes and your coach were sanctioned because of an nil violation sometimes those rules don't make sense. you had dinner with a booster who ended up paying you later on are the rules kind of petty and do they come after the canes in sort of an unfair way? >> no, i don't think they are petty. i think that if you do things the right way, which everything was legal that we were doing, and followed compliance, that nil is not an issue. >> so talk to us about the future there's a lot of speculation you guys could be entering professional wrestling in the wwe. >> we love the wwe, their fan base, the sport, the fitness side of it, that fits our brain and aligns great with us they're a great partner, and we're very excited to feature with them. >> we have a lot of long-term deals, too we just signed two long-term deals, one with cactus ai and another with a media company
