accused of leaking hundreds of pages of classified military intelligence in a chat room. nbc's chief white house corresponden kristin welker is on the story for us this morning. good morning. >> hi, savannah and hoda good morning to both of you. in just hours, the 21-year-old jack texas -- texiera will appear in that federal court in boston as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are demanding how this could have happened and what's being done to make sure it never does again. this morning the fall-out intensifying after the dramatic arrest after his home in massachusetts. with guns drawn, heavily armed federal agents took the national guardsman into custody thursday after the federal government has accused texiera of leaking hundreds of classified documents from the pentagon. >> they arrested him in connection with an investigation into an alleged removal, retention and transmission of classified national defense information.

>> reporter: texiera who was recently promoted to airman first class worked in the intelligence wing. "the washington post" was first to report he shared classified intelligence under the screen name of og it all unfolded on a gaming platform called discord. popular with young male video gamers and gun enthusiasts the post describes the suspected leaker as searching for companionship amid the isolation of the pandemic and spoke with an anonymous member of the chat room. >> i don't think there was a goal nor some sort of accomplishment he was looking for in sharing these documents of course, there was some anti-government sentiment. >> reporter: president biden weighed in from ireland in the hours before the arrest. >> i'm not concerned about the way he used it i'm concerned that it happened but there is nothing contemporaneous that i'm aware of that is of great consequence. >> reporter: it capped a frenzied week in which the leaked documents set off alarms across the globe

among the most damning reported revelations, the war i ukraine could last well into next year and the pentagon had doubts about ukraine's strength heading into this next phase also among the chief concerns, the leak exposing how the u.s. gathers intelligence abroad and the potential damage that may cause. now outraged lawmakers are vowing to investigate. >> if this stuff is authentic, it could change the dynamics on the battlefield. >> how this type of information could be out and not be found is inexcusable. >> reporter: the administration is also scrambling to reassure key allies including poland we pressed the prime minister. >> it is unfortunate, of course. but these things of course can happen. >> reporter: can poland trust the u.s. intelligence community? >> yes. >> now, merrick garland seemed to signal texiera could be charged under the espionage act. at minimum it could carry ten years in jail per document that's the possibly of hundreds of years behind bars if

convicted. >> a lot of people are asking this is a low-level airman how does he have access to this highly classified information? >> that is the question, savannah look it is still early in the investigation, but here is what we know. while his level of intelligence clearance is unclear, he worked in i.t. which gave him acces to a computer network that stored top secret information and would have given him the ability to read and print that information. the armed forces often entrusts their members with great responsibility at an early age but bottom line, all that is now under review >> thank you, kristin. breaking overnight, a new move tied to the nation's battle over abortion rights florida governor ron desantis signing a law banning the procedure in his state in almost all cases after just six weeks nbc legal correspondent laura jarrett has more on this good morning. >> good morning to you florida has been one of the last places where someone could

travel for an abortion in the south. now it has one of the more restrictive bans in the country. >> reporter: overnight, florida governor ron desantis signing a bill that would ban most abortions after six weeks. desantis quietly signing the law just after 11:00 p.m., posting only this photo on twitter a stark contrast to how he publicly celebrated a 15-week ban last spring. >> we are here today to defend those that can't defend themselves. >> reporter: unless blocked in the court, the move will shut off access in a state that sought 60% increase in women seeking abortion since roe was overturned known as the heartbeat protection act it makes exemptions for cases of human trafficking. >> have all members voted? >> reporter: anger erupting in the florida house over debate over the bill. protests and chaos before the republican dominated legislature passed it.

>> this is meant to divide us! >> reporter: democrats and critics slamming the law as extreme with the white house saying, it is out of step with the views of the vast majority of the people of florida and of all the united states. all this is the issue of abortion is taking center stage in the 2024 campaign with presidential hopefuls pressed on their positions. >> it is something i believe that is a place where you find a national limits no more. states can do less >> i think if we are looking a 15 weeks, what we need to understand is we are not okay with abortion up until the time of birth. >> reporter: meanwhile, a high stakes showdown will reach the supreme court over a widely used abortion pill. a federal appeals court blocked a texas ruling that invalidated the use of mifepristone bu moved back to make the drug easier to obtain her reck garland saying the justice department strongly

even with the fire out, they expect that smoke, soot and the smell of burning plastic could be circulating through thi community for days to come once again this morning, schools this morning are closed and the evacuation order within a half mile radius of ground zero remains in effect. officials say with the fire out, they can focus on air and water testing which will help them determine if and when that evacuation order can be lifted we're also now getting a closer look at the site itself. you can see what we're told is roughly 14 acres was reduced to rubble and officials have said that the six buildings at this facility were covered in plastic floor to ceiling. now there is finger pointing as to who is responsible for that mess the city's mayor blaming a business that occupied the facility for years it is unclear if that business was operating at this facility at time of the fire. and records show that the city actually took ownership of part

of this space last year. so there is this suggestion that possibly the city should have been responsible for the cleanup. this back and forth as we're waiting for more air testing results that could come out today. and those will hopefully give us a better idea of the health threats in this community. a lot of unanswered questions here that evacuation order is still in place, even with the fire fully extinguished, according to officials. savannah >> thank you, jesse. a lot more to get to, including extreme weather and that flood emergency in south florida. the city of fort lauderdale and its major airport brought to a stand still by a historic deluge while other parts of the country are facing record heat we have it all covered we will start with nbc's sam brock, who is in fort lauderdale for us. hey, sam >> reporter: good morning. just to sort of give you a frame

of reference, 20 to 25 inches of rain would be typical for a full day of a high end hurricane. that is what we just saw in fort lauderdale as you mentioned in seven hours. the odds of that happening on a random day in the dry season are 0.1% it is now a state of emergency in ft. lauderdale. both city, county and statewide. this is a neighborhood about two and a half miles from the airport. look at all the water down the street here. we are a good 36 hours removed from the main event itself, hoda there are still cars that se water 1 to 2 feet high the waters receded considerably from where they were yesterday it is still a problem. we heard from the mayor who said there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 calls through the morning seeking help that's the elderly, young kids as well, hoda. we spoke with our affiliate in miami who said he had taken kids out of the car window. the water reached to high levels of the door, pulled kids out of the window, put those children on his shoulder and back and walked through knee deep water just to get them out that gives you a sense of the n

urgency of the situation it is fairly remarkable to report there are still no fatalities despite how serious the situation is you mentioned the airport a second ago there are currently 600 people at these shelters. broward school district is the sixth largest in the country that is closed again on friday after county officials said there's somewhere in the neighborhood o $2 million worth of sustained damage yes, the airport is expected to open a few hours from now, some time this morning, but that's still in the air they have to conduct daylight inspections. there was so much water out there in the tarmac. there is concerns some of that could have gotten in the engine systems, the brakes. perhaps even punctured tired there is 230 cancellations this morning there were 600 plus yesterday. that's more than 800 in two days there is still a flood warning as we look around here for the rest of the day as scattered storms are expected this afternoon. it is not over yet this area is trying to breathe a

and the court appearance for a suspect in a high-profile stabbing. he's scheduled to appear in court later this morning charged with murder. the 38-year-old, a tech consultant, who was one of the last to see bob leave ten days ago was arrested at his home yesterday in emeryville. on april 4th, police found lee, the founder of cash app, with stab wounds around 2:30 in the morning and he died later in the hospital. police would not give a motive for the murder or whether they said they found a weapon that was used. fans will get a chance to watch the warriors take on the kings tomorrow for round one of the nba playoffs. since the warriors will be traveling to sacramento for game one, a watch party will take place at drive city starting at 4:00 p.m. but you need to rsvp for that event. they beat the kings three out of

knows more than me what was it in you that made you say i've got to -- there is actually something here and i'm positive of it >> i really trust my body. before i was a peloton instructor, i was a professional dancer for 12 plus years i just -- i knew it was a gut feeling, and i trusted that gut feeling the first time i was checked and they told me it was a hormonal cyst, they said to come back in 28 days, which is a menstrual cycle and see if there was any change during that time, there was no change and it's easy to -- you don't want it to be bad news, so it's easy to say i won't get it checked. but you just delay but if something is wrong, you're just delaying that knowledge and that knowledge is

power. >> if people take nothing else, i hope they take away you have to trust your body, trust your gut. it made the difference for you you have been through chemo. you had surgery. i can't believe you still taught your class in the midst of that. how was that important for you and how did you do that? >> it was one of the most important things for me. and the reason is i think it i so important to do things to make you feel like you, to have small goals. you have to go one step at a time treatment can be so overwhelming and to have a moment in my day and moment in my week where i felt like me, where i could do my hair and my makeup and move my body. moving your body is one of the best things you can do and i just -- nobody knew. nobody knew. and i was helping other people to be fit and healthy, and i

knew how important that was. >> you said this was a life changing moment. it changed your perspective. i saw you before, and you were the most optimistic person in the world. how did that diagnosis change you? >> i think if, i'm completely honest, i lost some of my innocence in life. i think i have a joy on a deeper level. i understand that people go through tough things in life you never know what somebody else is going through. i think i'm a big example of that people that came to my classes had no idea. people that take my class at home had no idea and maybe my life looked sparkly on screen. and i think it's allowed me to be kinder, to just look at life as in the way that it's so fragile and it's so precious and to enjoy every small moment.
