has made a last-minute attempt to settle out of court violent clashes have resumed this morning in the african nation of sudan following a u.n.-backed cease-fire sunday in order to evacuate wounded against. the fighting between the country's armed forces and a paramilitary group has already led to the deaths of nearly 100 people in just three days. for more on this, we go to nbc's megain meagan fitzgerald. what led to this crisis? >> reporter: good morning. we're talking about two different groups locked in this bloody power struggle. the sudanese armed forces on one day. on the other side, you the p paramilitary that the sudanese army is trying to take under their control. both of these organizations are loyal to different leaders now look, we have seen tensions brewing in the capital city in one of the largest countries on the continent for some time now. and of course all this violence erupted saturday morning with

gunfire, explosions, fighter jets seen in the capital city with united states citizens trapped in the middle. we know that on saturday morning, we heard from the u.s. ambassador to sudan saying that he and his team are sheltering in place we know that three world food organization members from different countries have been killed in this bloody battle the international airport, for example, has been closed so the u.s. state department is saying that they don't at this point have any plans to evacuate u.s. citizens as this battle continues to rage. now the latest numbers coming in from sudanese doctors union says that about 97 people have been killed more than 900 have been wounded just since saturday. and you've got the entire world, basically, calling for a ceasefire, including in a rare moment of unit, you've got russia and china standing with the united states, calling for the violence to end. this is certainly an ongoing situation we will continue to monitor. frances?

the own over the report said shooters destroyed a shop on the premises and took took security cameras before leaving the scene. local police were given helicopter support by the state to search for the gunmen the statement given by police did not speculate on a possible motive for the shooting. in ukraine, as a growing number of lgbtq+ soldiers fight on the front line, there is progress on a different front in the socially conservative country. as ukraine seeks to distance itself from russia, one way is taking a stance against putin's anti-gay messages. last year ukrainian lawmakers passed a bill outlawing hate speech against lgbtq minorities in the media and just last month, another lawmaker introduced legislation that would recognize same-sex civil partnerships, granting partners the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts. ukraine was the first post soviet country to decriminalize homosexuality in 1991 when it gained independence from russia. okay it looks like we can expect a drop in temps.
