we have some changes today. i know, right? not nearly as warm. time to get back to work and it may be misting and drizzling in some spots. looking at a mostly cloudy day, it is definitely going to be much cooler as we take a live look outside in san rafael and it's 50 degrees. it's breezy, the wind coming in from the west-southwest at 10 miles per hour. throughout the morning it's going to be so slow to warm up. it's definitely going to be not as warm as yesterday. that's going to be the story to start out the week as we reach into the upper 50s and low 60s and we may even see some light showers in the north bay tomorrow. i'm going to have more on that in just a few minutes. mike, you spotted something on the san mateo bridge. >> i spotted what i thought might be the start of something. we had brake lights across the flat section and in the last 90 seconds we've seen it clear. it's possible that someone made a sudden lane change, causing

someone else to hit their brakes. i'll keep watching that. we're looking toward the south bay where we had a fire reported. it is in the westbound direction of 237 coming toward me. it's at the lawrence expressway off ramp and that should be taken care of quickly and no delays getting across the bay bridge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. this afternoon, business and community leaders will push for greater police presence near one of oakland's busiest transit centers. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom with more on the calls to make the fruitvale district safer. >> oakland councilman noel gallo is one of the voices calling for greater safety in the district. i want to show you numbers, a look at crime activity in a one-mile radius from the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station over the last four weeks. you see lots of spots. there were nearly 300 reports of crime. nearly a quarter of that is the

area in red that represents 75 assaults. those are the most serious crimes. but the most prominent crime was motor vehicle theft, that's the area in purple. that represents more than 90 crimes. councilman gallo already got oakland police to designate a liaison officer specifically for fruitvale and the unity council hired 24-hour armed security to patrol the area. but now the community leaders are pushing for more creative solutions as crime has ticked up over the last year. >> just trying to keep the temperature down and to support the merchants and, again, a lot of the children and students and seniors. >> now, the first of two public safety meetings happening tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the san antonio senior center right there on 12th, which is near the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. it is open to the public.

people who work at the fruitvale transit center who commute through that area, live or go to school nearby, all encouraged to attend. marcus and laura. >> kris, thank you. 5:03 right now. happening today, santa clara council member anthony becker is due in court facing charges for lying while under oath. in october a civil grand jury was investigating the 49ers for trying to stack the city council with team-friendly members. before the jury released its report, someone leaked it to the 49ers. that triggered a criminal grand jury investigation. prosecutors accuse becker of leaking the document, then lying to the grand jury while under oath. becker has not responded to our request for comments. >> also today, a man arrested in the violent attack of a former san francisco fire commissioner is set to be arraigned. police say garret doty used a metal bar to strike don

carmignani in the mission district. carmignani is still in the hospital recovering from multiple injuries. students at san jose state university plan to walk out of class in an effort to advocate for gun safety. today's walk begins at noon in washington square, it comes more than two weeks after a mass shooting at a nashville school. the group, students demand action, organizing the demonstration. several other bay area students took part in a similar walkout earlier this month. >> today's rally comes as schools in a small town in alabama had closed after a shooting at a birthday party over the weekend. at least four people were shoot and killed. 28 others were hurt after gunfire erupted inside a crowded studio on saturday. it happened in dadeville. most of the victims were teenagers, including the brother of the birthday girl. police so far are not revealing who is responsible and what led up to that shooting. the incident happened within hours of a deadly mass shooting in louisville, kentucky, on

saturday. police say two people died, four others rushed to the hospital after shots were fired into a crowd at a park. all eyes on the supreme court this week. this comes as the battle over the abortion pill takes center stage. "today in the bay"'s drew petrimoulx is with us this morning. >> reporter: the question is whether the supreme court will allow major changes to abortion access to go into effect this week. protests from new york to california, as abortion rights supporters demand access to the commonly used abortion drug. a frl judge issued a ban on the drug, an appeals court blocked the ban but kept some restrictions in place. the biden administration appealed the restrictions and the supreme court will rule on

this this week. >> we do not need judges, politicians or government telling women about what sort of health care they can have. >> reporter: some republicans urging patience while the courts decide this particular case. >> this could be resolved by the courts. >> reporter: while also defending their position that abortion is best left to individual states. >> i think returning it to the states to allow the state's values to guide is very important. >> reporter: but other republicans worry repeated attacks on abortion rights are alienating voters. >> some of the stances we've taken when it comes to rape and incest, protecting the life of the mother, it's so extreme the middle independent voters, right of center, left of center, they cannot support us. >> this is a critical point in our nation's history. >> reporter: vice president kamala harris making an appearance at a pro-abortion rights rally in los angeles over the weekend, making it clear that democrats plan to press the issue they think is a winner at the polls. now, the supreme court has

blocked changes to access until add least midnight on wednesday that will give more time for legal filings and allow for the court to consider its next steps. marcus, back to you. >> no matter where you stand on this issue, all eyes are really watching what's going to happen in the high court. drew, thank you. 5:07. only on nbc bay area, an unnerved peninsula family talking about being victims in a violent home invasion robbery. police confirm last friday night several armed people entered a san bruno home, assaulted someone living there, and then stole valuables, $20,000 in cash and two puppies. we spoke to one victim, a man who did not want to be identified. he shared home security video showing three armed people entering his yard. he says they were armed with automatic rifles. after threatening to kill him, he gave $20,000 from his safe. now he says he's terrified for

his safety and the safety of his family. >> this is where i live, this is where my wife sleeps, this is where my kids sleep. they have no remorse for what they did. >> he says they also took valuable jewelry, an xbox, shoes, a 49ers helmet and his two english bulldog puppies. police believe there is no threat to the public at the time but they're not revealing details about the incident due to the complexity of the investigation. we take a live look outside in san francisco, getting started with the day dark and early. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect from the temperatures today. we're starting off pretty nice and pleasant, i guess. >> it's mild now. but it's not going to warm up much more from here as we go into today. so we're seeing upper 40s and low 50s and then as we go into the afternoon you'll notice that temperatures aren't really changing that much. in pleasant hill we're going from 48 degrees to about 56

degrees at lunchtime and only reaching into the upper 50s for today, and for the north bay, 60 in napa, 62 in santa rosa, and san francisco reaching 57 degrees. a lot of clouds hovering overhead, but not much rain. we'll talk about where we may see showers coming up in just a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find some slightly lower gas prices. >> we're going to start with the best price at the top, vallejo's shell on tennessee street, $3.97. then in the south bay, cupertino, a couple of $4.09s. alliance in the south bay. in contra costa county, you head to hercules with $4.19 a gallon at safeway. all of these come through gasbuddy.com. i'll give you an update. the off ramp at lawrence expressway, the car fire was reported and everyone is out of the car safely. the car is off of the roadway.

give you an update coming up. good morning. very happy monday. wall street hasn't been moving that much lately as it awaits various reports on inflation and now earnings. this week netflix will report its profits later this week. gma announced last month it would stop apple car play in its cars. the idea largely panned by car buyers, they liked car play. kevin mccarthy will be in new york today, he's going to address traders on the new york stock exchange, talking about the debt ceiling. he'll ring the opening bell at 6:30. ronald reagan rang the opening bell 37 years ago, back in 1985. joe biden and george w. bush have done it as well. we don't know what mccarthy is going to say, but we can reason that many experts at the stock exchange will warn mccarthy not

raising the debt ceiling would be disastrous. as you know, american government spends more money than it has all the time, democratic congresses, republican congresses. the government has got to pay its bills for stuff it's already bought, just like we have to pay our credit card bills. raising the debt ceiling allows the government to keep making payments. >> one of the documents leaked online says american companies and the government catch only 1% of fake social media accounts posted by russian hackers and propagandists. it's estimated there are hundreds of thousands of fake social media accounts controlled by russians. we've reached out to the fbi and dod to confirm the reporting. we have not heard back. a live look this morning at spacex starship, ready to go from the launchpad in texas. an unmanned test may take place as soon as 6:00 a.m. our time, so about 45 minutes from now.

"love is blind" was supposed to air last night but viewers tuned in and saw an error screen. netflix tweeted out love is late, adding it would start in 15 minutes, but that never happened. netflix later tweeted apologies saying that filming is under way and the show would be posted as soon as possible. fans kept waiting and waiting and waiting. the show is now supposed to be

show has been a fixture for more than three decades but last night the curtain fell one final time on its longest running show. ♪♪ >> even if you've never seen it, you probably know the opening chords, the "phantom of the opera" opened in january of 1988. after exactly 13,981 shows, the beloved musical has closed. legendary composer andrew lloyd webber says costs have gone up and it costs a million a week to put on the show. that, combined with dwindling ticket sales, contributed to its closing. >> this show is quintessential broadway. >> i feel really thrilled to be here tonight. >> the "phantom of the opera" has won seven tonys, including best musical. >> fun fact, 25 years ago this year, that was my first broadway

musical. >> that you performed in? >> i wish. and i still have the playbook and everything. >> there's a chandelier that crashes, comes down as part of the opening. >> do you remember that? >> that's why it costs so much. >> they had to get a new one every night. >> great show. >> i would say that was a good run. >> a very good one. kari, great run weather-wise? >> it's about to end. >> crashing down. >> just like the chandelier. we're going to have some much colder weather to start out our week, and we're going to see things recover over the next few days. here is a live look outside in dublin, a lot of people are heading back to work, back to school, back to reality. take a look at these temperatures and what we're expecting for today. we're going to see a lot of clouds in the east bay, all across the bay area, in fact, and in walnut creek we start out in the upper 40s. look at the afternoon high

temperatures, just a few peeks of sunshine and we're reaching into the upper 50s. if you're hitting the road and you're on your way to sacramento to cheer on the warriors, we're going to have temperatures in sacramento also cooler with partly cloudy skies in the low 60s later this evening. also pretty gusty at times as we're going to see overall the whole region getting in on some cooler weather. so take a look at these highs for today. upper 50s, low 60s, that's at least 10 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. and this is what's causing it. we have the clouds, the center of the low pressure here, the cold front extending ahead of that. and it's really starved for moisture. by the time it gets here, it's producing spotty light showers, maybe some drizzle and we'll see that starting in the north bay later tonight. overall we're not expecting a lot of measurable rain, and most of it during the overnight hours. tomorrow there may be lingering

showers in parts of the north bay but the rest of us won't see any of those showers. once that moves through, we're back to dry conditions and that was our only chance of rain throughout the week. going into the weekend, our temperatures will rebound. take a look at morgan hill. we're going from the start of the week in the upper 50s to low 60s. saturday and sunday, upper 70s. it is going to be so nice and warm. and then back down for the middle of next week. so taking a look at our seven-day forecast, a couple of spotty showers, a warm-up and clearing out for the weekend. mike says the commuter is pretty calm. >> the south bay, overall we see a light traffic volume. we only have one fire reported affecting just the off ramp at lawrence expressway. car fire. all lanes are clear. there was a duplicate report. north 680, they just called for a traffic break and we see the impact as they clear the overnight crew.

nbc bay area responds to a peninsula couple and their home gas bill that suddenly ballooned. >> if you opened that bill, everyone knows the bills have gone up. but this family's bill, extraordinary. so they asked consumer investigator chris chmura and his team to check it out. >> good morning. her gas bill was pretty consistent, about 6 bucks a day. in june it shot up to $36 per day. same gas use but billed six times higher than normal, and only for that month. that same month, she says pg&e had swapped out her meter and she was convinced that her bill ballooned at the same time because the crew either misread the old meter before they removed it or misread the new meter before they installed it. then the billing system accepted the numbers. she estimates she overpaid 250 and asked pg&e to investigate and credit her. that didn't happen. so she contacted us.

san francisco. mist and drizzle and our temperatures in napa start out at 50 degrees. we'll see it basically holding steady for the next few hours and slowly making it into the mid to upper 50s for today, reaching 59 in dublin, 62 in san jose, and 59 in san mateo. so make sure you're prepared for that cool weather. and, mike, you have a live look at 280 in san jose. >> yes, it's dividing 880 on your side and 17 on my side. on the map it's right in the middle of the map, and you saw how smoothly traffic was flowing. i did see a good number of headlights, a little more volume than we expect to see at this time of day. i think there may be more traffic this week on many people's commutes, even though a few school districts have this week off. we're looking at san jose, 101 with slowing. we also have highway 4 and 37. so, again, different than the last three or four weeks, we have the traffic starting

earlier. it's 5:32 and we already see slower sensors. back over to you. the warriors take on the sacramento kings tonight in game two of the nba playoffs. >> as legendary bay area rapper and superfan e-40 is alleging racial bias after he was ejected from saturday night's game. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us live from outside of chase center in san francisco. a lot of people are talking about this. are the kings responding? >> reporter: they are. good morning to you, marcus and laura. the sacramento kings say the team is investigating that incident involving bay area rapper e-40 that took place saturday night. with regard to the game saturday night in sacramento, the warriors did lose that game. that was game one in the nba playoffs against the sacramento kings. they lost by three points. yesterday we heard from warriors head coach steve kerr on what needs to happen for the warriors to pull out a win tonight to even up the series. >> game two is important, every game is important.

i don't ever really say anything is must win until you have three losses, and then it's actually must win. but we've been through everything in the last decade with this team. these guys know what it's about and you take it a day at a time. today is a day where we watch film and recover and see where we can get better. >> reporter: now, back to the incident involving e-40, as you can see in the video from social media, security guards kicked him out of the golden 1 center in the fourth quarter. e-40 says his ejection happened after a disagreement with a white woman and he accuses security of immediately assuming he was at fault because he's black. sources familiar with the situation tell the "associated press" that the rapper was standing and blocking the view of fans behind him and was given a warning after several complaints. back out here live at the chase center, the watch party is being held for tonight's game here at thrive city.

if you do want to attend, you've got to log onto chasecenter.com and rsvp. there's limited space. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it is early out there. thanks, bob. new video from overnight showing side shows taking over the streets of san jose. spectators and even those drivers spotted at lundy and concourse. this was around 7:20 last night. they moved on to multiple other spots throughout the city. police were seen showing up in multiple locations breaking up those crowds, even at one point a fire truck seen in the chaos. more video showing another side show taking place that happened around 11:30 last night. you can see san jose police are issuing citations to those involved. we're still waiting for more information on the exact number of tickets that were issued by police. and happening today, the south bay mom accused of hosting

alcohol-fueled parties for minors is due in court for a preliminary hearing. shannon o'connor is being held without bail. she pleaded not guilty to dozens of charges, including child endangerment, providing alcohol to minors, and sexual battery. investigators say she hosted parties at her home in los gatos for her children and their friends. authorities later arrested her in idaho. oakland educators could soon be hitting the picket lines, the oakland education association will hold a strike vote later today. they are demanding more pay. parents behind the online movement are pushing against a possible strike, urging the district to take legal action to stop it. they say a potential open-ended strike would cause disruption for students. dozens of middle and high school teachers walked off the job last month. also happening today, thousands of students from all 23 california state university campuses plan to file petitions to form what they say would be

the largest union of undergraduate student workers in the nation. they are demanding change, including receiver higher wages and the ability to work more than 20 hours a week at non-teaching campus jobs to help pay for housing and food. many of the students say they're paying for college and living expenses on their own. >> i, for one, don't think the 20 hours is enough at all. like, i used to make close to $3,000 a month just being a high school student, and now i only make $1,500, if that, being in college. and i have way more bills now, way more responsibilities. >> csu says it capped student assistant hours at 20 hours a week to ensure they have enough time to study and pursue their degree. we reached out for comment on the plans but have not heard back. 5:37 right now. we take a live look at the san jose skyline. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking temperatures for us and

also you've been looking at we've got a system coming our way. >> yeah, we're going to have colder weather coming in and it's going to give us a couple of days of a little taste of what we had quite a bit throughout the past couple of months. so not like the weekend. we're going to have a cold front dipping in and we're going to see more clouds and temperatures today making a big change. and we also may see a couple of spotty light showers, especially in the north bay. most of us won't see much more than a few sprinkles between now and early tomorrow morning. and then going into tomorrow afternoon, most of the bay area is dry, but there still could be some light hit-or-miss showers in parts of the north bay by tomorrow evening. and most of us will be well below what's normal for this time of year. we'll talk about the rebound in temperatures for the end of the week in a few minutes. it seems like so far the commute is pretty smooth. >> pretty smooth, as expected. that doesn't mean we don't have slowing. highway 37, highway 4 behind me, a little bit heavier than the

last few weeks but right on pattern. the bay bridge sees a little slowing on the incline but no metering lights just yet. we'll take a second to look at the day ahead. the a's are playing and that's just about the time when a lot of folks are starting to head through the area. across the bay, the warriors are not at home, that's over in sacramento, the battle for i-80. but over here on our side, the warriors side, thrive city has a viewing party. there may be some crowds there, if you reserve your spot, as early as 5:30 in the city. the rest of the bay, a smooth flow of traffic. we see a build for 84 and also in san jose north 101, that shows the traditional pattern. this is a change. for months now we're going to see this overnight closures, one lane in each direction, between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., that will affect our friends on our shift. i'll make sure to warn them as well. back to you.

breaking, the u.s. military is saying that a helicopter raid in northern syria likely killed a senior isis leader. u.s. central command says the leader was responsible for planning attacks on the middle east and europe. we're still waiting for the identity of that isis leader. two other armed individuals were also killed. no u.s. troops were hurt in the mission. president biden is back in the white house after an extended trip to ireland. >> and, scott, we're talking about delaware as well. >> he made a pit stop in delaware. the bidens stopped at their beach home in delaware. they spend nearly every weekend there, just as trump spent nearly every weekend away from the white house. this may be a new thing that presidents do at taxpayer expense. as we have said, they don't stop being president on a trip. the mechanisms and infrastructure to allow them to run government travel with them, including ordering strikes on

isis leaders. biden, though, will soon need to deal with congress and its reluctance to raise the debt ceiling. something congress normally does as a matter of routine three times while trump was president. raising the ceiling allows america to pay bills for things it's already spent money on. not raising it would cause america to default for the first time in history and some economists warn that would pull the entire western world into a major recession, at best. house speaker kevin mccarthy will be in new york today talking to traders on the nyse about the debt ceiling before ringing the opening bell. mccarthy has insisted republican congressman jim jordan also accompany him in new york city. he's going to chair a committee looking into crime. crime is up in new york city year to-year, but down enormously from the '90s. in fact, new york is safer per capita than columbus, ohio, the city near jim jordan's district. most people expect the target

means and how it affected you. >> yeah, this was a really personal thing for me because covering climate change day in and day out, i started feeling kind of depressed, frankly. it was an overwhelming feeling. the more that i learned, the worse that i felt. and as i looked into it, i realized this is a thing a lot of people, potentially tens of millions of people in the united states, and even more around the world are feeling. so you consider the everyday stresses of life and then you watch the news and hear about what's going on with climate change and it's just that compounding effect, which can feel incredibly overwhelming for some people. >> in doing the story, you found there is a lot of research and actually books written about it and you also found more people who are feeling that climate dread. >> yeah, and it's particularly pronounced among younger people, so millennials and even more so gen-z are really feeling this. the thing that broke my heart to hear is some members of gen-z

so not a significant warm-up here. we're going to reach into the upper 50s for a high today. remember yesterday, it was sunny and 70 and it was gorgeous? we definitely had some warmer weather on saturday. we're once again going to see things dipping. but as you take a look at the seven-day forecast, you'll notice it won't last long. we're seeing a cold front dipping in. here is the system that's arriving right now. we can see the area of low pressure there, the swirls of clouds and also the line of clouds extending out ahead of that. this is the leading edge of the cold front that's going to continue to keep it cloudy and cool today. there's not a lot of green on here. this is pretty starved for moisture and we're not seeing a lot of rain coming out of this system. as we go into this evening, there's going to be some light spotty showers, first starting in the north bay. then it's in and out just as quickly as it started. most of us may not even see any rain. the north bay will have the best

chance of seeing that. and it may continue in some spots into early tomorrow evening, but then after that we're back to the dry conditions and the rest of the forecast is warming up as we continue, with sunshine in the forecast even into the weekend. we may see another slight chance of rain early next week, but there's no significant storms on the horizon. as we take a look at our ten-day forecast for san jose, starting out only at about 60 for a high today. and you can see it gradually starts to warm up through thursday. but then a big jump in temperatures for friday and saturday, and then we see it coming back down just a little bit to something more seasonable for this time of year. overall our seven-day forecast for the inland areas shows those slight rain chances and more clouds to start, but then a very nice finish to our week. mike, you were reading the clues at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> i'm sensing slowing. there it is at the bay bridge. the metering lights were

activated. we told you it would take a few minutes to show up. our camera shot is just shy of the toll plaza and we saw folks tapping their brakes. now the backup is forming. a smooth flow off the 880 over-crossing and out of the maze. little signs of slowing by golden gate fields as well. more volume out of the north bay. as i mentioned before, this is more volume and slowing than we saw for the last few weeks at this time, so we may see restoration, despite the fact that there are still a few schools that have spring break off. there is some slowing around the construction as you approach the carquinez bridge. highway 4, starting through pittsburg and into concord, 242 still at speed, walnut creek interchange is just fine. 680 through san ramon is fine, but we're seeing early slowing for west 580. and the travel past the dublin interchange, also the castro valley y.
