4:30 am
it started half an hour ago in my office and i would have been inside a half an hour ago. >> a shooting at an east bay
4:31 am
home depot leaves workers rattled and customers worried. ahead, the revelations police are making about the employee that was shot and the arrests that have been made. >> plus, draymond green suspended. the warrior sitting out for tomorrow's crucial game three. reaction from his suspension. >> also, analyzing our air quality. we speak with one expert about a new overnight report and the impacts it could have on your health. this is "today in the bay." good wednesday morning to you. thank you so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we've got a lot to get to this morning. mike is going to cover traffic in just a bit. >> i'll do traffic today. >> let's get a look at the forecast. >> i'll do weather. we'll start out with a very cool morning, once again. it's also all clear. as you're heading out in dublin, we're right now in the mid-40s, a little lower than yesterday. the clouds have rolled out of
4:32 am
here. we're in for all day sunshine, so we're going from low 40s to mid-50s at 11:00, and it's going to be just a little bit warmer compared to yesterday, reaching 64 in dublin and 62 in fremont. we'll also see 62 for a high today in novato and 59 in san francisco. warmer air is coming soon, so i'll have more on that. mike, you have two crashes you're tracking. >> we have two on the map, both in the east bay, one near the dublin interchange. i'm getting detail, but it doesn't sound serious. this one i'm concerned about, 84 at 680, word of a head-on crash. once chp updates, i'll let you know as far as the timing there. there's also a slower drive here at 84. there was a road crew going on. it looks like they may be clearing for the night. a very small section impacted by them. and as we look at the rest of the bay, we have an issue just outside of south county, near gilroy. i'll bring you that coming up.
4:33 am
>> we'll check back with you. in east san jose, a man was hit by a car in kentridge drive not far from the key and central shopping area. police say he was hit about 6:15 last night and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. there's no update yet on his condition. this morning a heem depot in pleasanton is expected to reopen after a store employee was shot as he tried to stop a shoplifter. >> police haven't identified the victim but at least one employee we spoke with tells us that he was a loss prevention worker. "today in the bay"'s stephanie magallon has the latest for us. >> reporter: home depot in pleasanton is the scene of the latest violent theft in the bay area. >> i'm scared right now. i can never imagine that in pleasanton this kind of thing can happen. >> reporter: several shoppers pulled up in the hours following the crime, only to find a closed store due to, quote, unforeseen circumstances. >> it's shocking. i was just thinking that i would
4:34 am
have started half an hour ago from my office and i would have been inside half an hour ago. >> reporter: police say they got a call about a man bleeding inside the home depot on johnson drive. on scene they learned the victim had attempted to stop a theft in progress. a struggle ensued and the man was shot. he was taken to the hospital, employees identify him as a loss prevention worker. as for the suspect, police say alameda county deputies located their vehicle and arrested them miles away in oakland. >> i'm really sorry for the person, but at least he tried to stop, i would say that's a positive thing. >> reporter: security experts say this tragedy shouldn't have happened, considering the latest state regulations for security guards. >> the general rule of thumb whether you're an employee, or loss prevention, is observe and report. there's cameras in stores, there are witnesses, much better to be a witness and be alive than to be a participant and get injured
4:35 am
or killed. >> reporter: stephanie magallon for "today in the bay." >> we reached out to get an update on the man's condition, however police did not return our calls. the alameda county coroner will only confirm it is working on a case with police. the man accused in a grizzly murder of his ex-girlfriend is scheduled to appear in court for a plea hearing. earlier this year a judge determined that jose he was ruled competent to stand trial for the murder of karina castro. investigators say he killed her with a samurai sword with her children nearby. to a look across the bay area, how is the air you breathe? it's better, but not as good as it should be. that is according to the 24th annual state of the air report. it shows the bay area had fewer unhealthy days between 2019 and 2021. still, nine out of ten

californians live in communities with polluted air and all counties have a failing grade for particle pollution like vehicle emissions and wildfire smoke. our region ranked sixth most polluted in terms of particulates, 11th in the nation in terms of ozone pollution. as a spokesperson for the american lung association explains, both contribute to poor health. >> ozone is a colorless, odorless gas that can have a corrosive effect on our airways, sort of like a sunburn on the skin. and particle pollution are these tiny bits of soot, ash, dust and liquids that can penetrate deep into our lungs and actually cross into the bloodstream. so we're not only talking about lung cancer and asthma attacks, but also hart heart attacks and strokes. >> the district has no critical votes coming up that will help our state transition to cleaner locomotives and zero emission truck fleets. they estimate the policy changes could result in a 90% reduction
4:37 am
in cancer risks almost immediately. a huge development for dub nation and the warriors. the nba suspending draymond green for tomorrow's game three against the sacramento kings at chase center. the nba made the announcement late last night. in case you may have missed it, here is the main reason. that stomp he gave kings star sabonis. this happened after sabonis grabbed green's leg, but the commissioner's office cited green's history as part of the suspension. we spoke with former warrior and nba champ and he says all of this happened as the warriors were trying to gain momentum. >> at this point in the game, steph is looking for draymond to throw it back to him so he can make a play. draymond knows it and he's trying to run back. and if anybody wants to re-enact that, you know if somebody grabs
4:38 am
your foot like that, you step out of balance, whatever it is, i think draymond also tried to embellish the pull so that the refs would see it. all in all, you don't want to see any of this in the game. you just want to see a clean basketball game. >> during the game, draymond could also be seen interacting dramatically with kings fans. some believe this also led to that suspension. now, when you think about the nba's mention of green's history of unsportsmanlike acts, you think about 2016, the conference finals when draymond was fined but not suspended for kicking steven adams in the groin, and in the 2016 nba finals he took a swipe at lebron james, hitting him in the groin. after green was suspended for game five, the cavaliers won the title. if the warriors lose tomorrow's game, they would actually be down three games to none, and in the nba no team has come back
4:39 am
from a 0-3 deficit to win a postgame series. >> we'll see what happens. it is 4:38 right now. bracing for more layoffs. ahead, the next wave of job cuts set to arrive at disney. >> plus, a crackdown delayed. the reason netflix is pressing pause on its plan to clamp down on password sharing. stay with us. we've got more ahd right here ea

4:41 am
good wednesday morning. it is 4:41, as you're heading out in the peninsula we're
4:42 am
taking a look at palo alto. we have mid-40s right now. it is all clear and we're in for a day of sunshine. and it's going to be a cool start, but actually shape up to be a very nice and comfortable day. a look at all of our microclimates and the weekend forecast coming up. and we're looking at fremont, 880 moves just fine here. very smooth drive along the nimitz. 680 is having a problem approaching 84. i'm stumbling because i'm getting the update. chp says they just stopped traffic at 84. let's check the business world with silvana. >> good morning. i'm silvana hanao at cnbc headquarters. wall street is set to open lower as investors look at more earnings reports and federal reserve officials publicly endorse another interest rate hike next month. yesterday the dow and the nasdaq fell slightly and the s&p ticked up just a fraction.
4:43 am
in focus today, we get data on mortgage applications and the latest report which tracks regional economic conditions. we get more earnings from morgan stanley, travelers, ibm and tesla. disney plans to cut thousands of jobs next week, including 15% of the entertainment division. bloomberg reports the cuts will be company-wide impacting tv, film, theme park and corporate positions. some workers will be notified as soon as this monday. now, in february disney announced it would cut 7,000 jobs as part of efforts to lower costs by more than $5 billion. netflix is delaying a broader crackdown on password sharing until later this quarter, likely before july. now, the company had previously committed to ending password sharing near the end of the first quarter in march. it's rolled out new rules in canada, new zealand, portugal and spain and says it's pleased with the results in those countries. in canada, for example, users
4:44 am
pay an extra $6 a month if they want to share their account with people outside their primary household. so a little more time before the crackdown. >> all right, cousin silvana, we're okay, then. >> we're okay for now. don't worry. we're okay. >> thank you, silvana, cousin. >> exactly. well, our coast in crisis. still ahead on "today in the bay," the work environmentalists are doing to help save dying kelp in our ocean. first, here is jaxon van derbeken. >> this is jaxon van derbeken with the investigative unit. you can see our story about how a health care worker is facing manslaughter charges in the deaths of two elderly people at a san mateo county assisted living facility on our website at nbcbayarea.com.

4:46 am
4:47 am
here we go, wednesday morning. taking a live look outside. look at the bay bridge toll plaza, looking nice and smooth. mike is looking at other areas, not so smooth. >> early morning commute, and folks think it's going to be clear. but tri-valley is having a big problem. serious crash. let's take you to the map to give you an idea. overall mostly green sensors, but i did tell you about a head-on collision, a crash just off of north 680 at eastbound 84. 680 will have impact as well. there are fire crews and likely
4:48 am
paramedics, there may be injuries. we're still waiting on detail, but we see the backup and they have shut down the transition from 680 over to 84. bigger problem, not only because we're concerned about injuries, but because north of there we have the crew that closed off north 680. so access through the area, if you're heading to the dublin interchange, you probably should head over toward 880, that's a better route. cutting through 84, you'll be jammed up. there's a big distraction there. over here in south county, we're talking about 152 where there's an ongoing issue with a big rig. folks are getting by on the shoulder. no serious injuries reported for that crash. we're starting out nice and quiet in the weather department and we are also feeling some cooler temperatures. here is a live look outside in oakland, if you're heading out there. it's going to be a morning where you may, in fact, for a few minutes have to turn on the heater in the vehicle. we're in the upper 40s, but we're in the upper 30s in los
4:49 am
gatos, and it's 38 degrees in santa rosa. so there are some spots as we get started that are feeling quite chilly out there. and we also have a home game today with the oakland a's, early afternoon game. it's going to be first pitch at 12:37. and it will be at about 58 degrees and sunny with breezy winds. going into the afternoon it will feel nice, especially with the sunlight coming in to help warm things up, but at the same time that wind will be picking up. then we take a look at our south bay high temperatures for today, a little warmer compared to yesterday, reaching 64 in east san jose and milpitas and 65 in walnut creek. oakland headed for 63 degrees. we'll see low 60s for much of the peninsula, 57 for daly city. going through the rest of the forecast, the storm track stays farther to the north. we're going to be mostly dry. only a couple of sprinkles here and there. we'll see temperatures going up and down, but definitely heading
4:50 am
up over the next few days. as we take a look at gilroy, if p you're looking forward to the warmer weather, you'll definitely get that on friday. saturday is looking nice. we do see a steady temperature with highs in the mid-70s into next week. so it's going to feel like spring eventually. we will see that, especially as the sunshine returns and continues into the weekend. san francisco reaching into the upper 60s this weekend. as we turn to our climate in crisis, heat waves occur not only on land but in the ocean as well. and warmer ocean temperatures have destroyed sea life, as the water becomes more acidic. scientists estimate we've lost 90% of the kelp forest off the coast of california. kelp, as well as ocean trees, work to create half of the oxygen we breathe, so the less sea life we have, the less fresh air we'll have available. but there are organizations making sure that climate change
4:51 am
doesn't choke us out. i talked to michael stewart to find out what they're doing to help save the kelp. >> kelp forests globally are one of the most important ecosystems in the ocean for sequestering or storing carbon dioxide that we are releasing through the use of fossil fuels. when we burn fossil fuels, it goes into the air. about 25% of all carbon emissions in the world, in the air, get reabsorbed back into the ocean. so it's literally changing the ocean chemistry or the ph, making the oceans for acidic. so kelp forests and mangrove forests, watersheds, sea grass, those rebound the system for us. we've lost a lot of those in the last 50 years and that's part of our global work, to help put those back in partnership with local organizations that are on the ground. >> now you can help restore the kelp by donating to
4:52 am
seatrees.org. we have a link on our climate in crisis page on nbcbayarea.com. >> thank you very much, kari. 4:51 right now. april is national autism awareness month, and with this comes troubling news. the cdc has found that autism diagnosis in children might be on the rise here in the united states. according to the agency's study from march, 1 in 36 children aged 8 years old were identified as being on the autism spectrum disorder. that is a 22% increase from 2018. a pathologist who helps autism students within the san jose unified school district tells us her elementary school saw a jump in diagnosis last fall due to kids who weren't able to be evaluated during the pandemic. she says this is one of the signs parents should be on the lookout for. >> children with autism are often sensory seeking, and when
4:53 am
parents see their child is clapping their hands or slapping their hands, they tell them to stop. but that's actually equal to, you know, sneezing or having a cough, obviously you need to let that out, you need to sneeze, you need to cough. so in order to combat those behaviors, what we can do is modify those behaviors through fidget toys. >> for other signs, you can log onto their website. 4:52 right now. a key deadline for one lotto winner. a winning ticket still unclaimed right here in the bay area. we're going to tell you what happens to the money if that winner doesn't come forward. >> and happening now, santa clara county library district is holding two workshops teaching people how to protect themselves from cyber scams. one takes place this morning at the saratoga library and it's going to feature deputy district attorney aaron west.

walton during last night's supervisors meeting. >> any plans to support the $50 million supplemental i introduced to fund the office of reparations, the staffing, the committee's approved recommendations, a database to locate eligible participants. >> i have no plans at this time to support that request. thank you. we can continue to invest in programs that are clearly working, while the work to finalize the reparation report continues. >> the committee's draft report recommends more than 100 different actions, including the possibility of $5 million payments to eligible recipients. a final report is due in june. 4:56 right now. take a look at this video showing a close encounter with a family of bears in truckee. all caught on camera, shared with us by claire aldridge. a family of bears visited their cabin this week. one managed to open the truck door. they didn't find anything good, so they just moved along. but it is a good reminder if you
