some oakland renters. >> you guys can't do what you're supposed to do and house these people, you're making us suffer. >> while you were sleeping, oakland leaders held a late-night vote to phase out the city's pandemic eviction moratorium. kris sanchez is breaking down what happens next for those behind on their rent. >> employees at meta say they expect even more layoffs, this after thousands previously. we'll have the latest from menlo park. >> and awaiting a key decision impacting women everywhere. supreme court justices may rule as soon as today on the future of a widely used abortion pill. we'll also explain where this case may go from here. this is "today in the bay." good morning on this wednesday. happy hump day to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with mike and see if there's any traffic rolling out there. hopefully it's moving along. let's check in with
6:01 am
meteorologist kari hall, she's got a look at our forecast for today. >> it's been a cold start to the week but it's going to warm up as we get closer to the weekend. as we take a live look outside in dublin, we already have a lot of people up and out the door and it's right now feeling kind of chilly where you do need a warmer jacket to get things started. as we go into the next few hours, we're going to see temperatures going from upper 40s, headed to the upper 50s for later today. and we'll see that trend up to about 58 degrees at 1:00, and eventually reaching into the mid-60s in the tri-valley. and even some upper 60s in the few spots. how about 80 degrees? we may see that before the weekend. mike, you're seeing a backup forming out of oakland. >> found some traffic. you'll be happy because it's not as heavy of a backup as we often see on a wednesday. traffic is coming back this week. some schools still have spring break, believe it or not. this is the fourth week they've been rotating around the bay.
6:02 am
there may be less traffic because we just learned about a crash coming down out of san pablo and rodeo toward richmond. west 80 has one, possibly two lanes blocked. chp is going to give more detail. the east bay routes show a predictable pattern. we have recovery from 84 from an earlier crash, slowing for the tri-valley in general and a crash getting off of the dumbarton bridge on the east bay side. back to you. 6:01 right now. breaking news after hours of back and forth, oakland renters and landlords now know when eviction protections will come to an end. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us live from the newsroom. >> reporter: we know that it is going to be a rather uncertain summer because those eviction protections will not be phased out, but will instead come to a hardened, and that end is going to come july 15th. that decision came after a lot
6:03 am
of passionate outcry from some landlords who say that they have been living without getting rent from tenants for quite some time, close to three years, little or no rent. housing advocates also spoke out saying that the abrupt stop might push at-risk renters into free fall. >> just to stop it abruptly like that will just kind of be, like, you know, a death sentence for a lot of renters. >> i can't sleep at night because i know i have to pay this bill tomorrow and that bill the next day, and i don't have enough money to pay. and i have to work day and night, three jobs, to get by. >> so july 15th is now the firm date for the end of all eviction protections. under the ordinance as it was passed last night or voted on last night, tenants can only be evicted if they cannot prove that their late rent is related to the pandemic. tenants, however, can only be
6:04 am
evicted if they owe more than one month's rent, and landlords can still evict people under the just cause rule if they can prove that there was substantial damage by the tenants or unreasonable behavior by those tenants. there is a final vote on that ordinance, it's largely a formality. it is scheduled for may 2nd. both the city of oakland and the housing advocacy groups plan massive outreach starting may 1st, which is 75 days before eviction proceedings can begin. >> quite emotional out there. thank you very much. it is 6:03. to a live look at capitol hill. a ruling from the supreme court could come as early as today surrounding the battle over an abortion pill. the high court could rule on whether to keep an appeals court decision in place which limits its accessibility. it would prohibit telemedicine prescriptions, mail delivery and retail pharmacy dispensing of mifepristone. earlier this week an antiabortion group asked the high court to keep restrictions

in place while the battle over the medication's legal status plays out. this morning reverend al sharpton is urging the u.s. attorney to investigate the antioch police department and provide protection from mayor lamar thorpe. this comes after racist texts between city officers suggested thorpe be shot during a 2020 protest after the murder of george floyd. as we've been reporting, the fbi discovered text messages between antioch police officers, some racist, others homophobic and violent. 45 officers are now under investigation. last night angry residents also called for immediate action. the subject of one of the text messages says she plans to sue the police department. >> the community demands that those officers are fired and never, ever able to become police officers ever again. >> the council approved an audit of the police department's internal affairs processes.
6:06 am
we're learning new information about the deadly freeway shooting of a 5-year-old girl. police and the district attorney laying out exactly how that shooting unfolded. 5-year-old eliyanah crisostomo was in the car with her family heading to a birthday party on 880 in fremont when she was hit. investigators say the three men arrested were first caught on a surveillance camera shooting another man in fremont about 15 minutes before. they say that same car with the same license plate pulled up to the family's suv on 880. the men allegedly thought they were targeting a gang rival. this was a case of mistaken identity. meta employees fear thousands of additional staffers will be laid off today. >> scott mcgrew, this comes after a lot of people thought there were promises of no more layoffs. >> management is probably going to sea we didn't promise, just strongly implied no more layoffs. after 11,000 plus were laid off in november, another 10,000 in
6:07 am
march, that's a little less than the population of burlingame. and now the news company vox reports some meta employees have been asked to work from home today to give space to those who may be laid off. live pictures from the meta offices. company insiders were quoted saying affected employees will be notified early this morning, so that should be any time now. during the last round of layoffs, ceo mark zuckerberg told employees, quote, not only are we saying good-bye to people we've worked closely with, but many of you also feel uncertainty about the future. i want you to know that we're making these decisions to make sure our future is strong. now, tech workers change jobs a lot. sometimes involuntarily. but that means many workers have deep networks and we talked with a life coach, gary quinn, who reminds people old coworkers, bosses and friends will be there to help. >> remember, it's action equals results. you have to believe in order to
6:08 am
receive. and i believe to be positive in the workforce right now is a main key. people want to hire people who are team players. you want to go in as a winner. >> again, we are relying on vox on this reporting as far as meta layoffs go. if they do, they would announce it quite soon. if there are layoffs, all those employees are predicting the company will make a statement. zuckerberg usually adds something to his blog. we'll certainly bring that to you as it happens. >> in the meantime, it's tough for the people that are there, tough on morale. >> when you watch your coworkers leave, and if you're pretty good and your employable, you start to think to yourself, hold on a moment. so morale is a huge issue if you're worried about getting laid off. the good ones leave on their own. we saw this at yahoo, a silicon valley giant some years ago. but as it wound down operations, it went through the slow slide where it both had too many people, yet it couldn't hold onto the people it wanted to
6:09 am
hold onto, and it's one of the things that contributed to the eventual sort of vanishing of yahoo. >> amazing in itself. >> in 1998, it's still around, but that it would essentially cease to exist is amazing. >> yahoo! >> exactly, it would be like google going away. >> i remember when people were just, like, what's this thing called google? it's amazing. >> we've been doing this a while. >> silicon valley, exactly, expand and contract and everything in between. thank you very much. also happening today, workers at the trader joe's in oakland at the rock ridge neighborhood are expected to vote on whether or not to unionize. at the time, employees reportedly cited worker safety and financial security. the company never gave a public response. voting is scheduled to continue through tomorrow night. 6:09 right now. let's take a live look at san

francisco. beautiful start to the day. we've had a lot of beautiful starts to the day, kari. >> especially when it's all clear. then when you step outside, you're like, oh, it's cold. and we're seeing just a few clouds moving over the south bay right now. all of this will clear out as we head into today. it's still breezy and cool with some upper 40s to start, and then we see the trend that's slowly going to be heading upward as we go late morning into the afternoon. and later today you'll notice that it will be just a touch warmer compared to yesterday. so we're on this trend with each day, our highs coming up just a few degrees. but tomorrow there will be a significant jump in temperatures and we'll head for the upper 60s and low 70s. we'll talk about this in the weekend forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, where can we find lower gas prices? >> i like the numbers you had. the trend not so great. we have $3.97 at the top, one of the best prices in the state. we'll start with vallejo at the shell on tennessee street.
6:11 am
the south bay, we'll call out santa clara today, $4.29, considerably higher at the costco on coleman and that's the best for the county. same in the east bay, fremont, the best in the city is at chevron on fremont boulevard. also $4.29 a gallon. we depend on you sharing your information through gasbuddy.com. we're sharing the roadways pretty nicely today but we do have an issue. chp has called an alert because left lanes are blocked west 80 at carlton boulevard. more importantly, reports of the car flipping over and some injuries and still waiting to get detail to give me an idea how long it might take for them to clear this. it's causing a backup and it does look like the east bay is looking lighter, so the buildup at the bay bridge is slower today. this is not bad for a backup if you're coming from oakland into san francisco. >> i love how he's got it down to the minute. he knows when it's coming. over before it started. >> money is accountability.

good wednesday morning. it is 6:14 right now. and in martinez, 44 degrees. it is all clear. and we see a cool start to our morning, but leading into a comfortable day. it will be slightly warmer compared to yesterday and the warming trend continues into the weekend. we'll check out those temperatures as you're making weekend plans in a few minutes. the greater east bay looks pretty smooth. but this is bad for one section, the eastshore freeway has an alert. chp has called that because we have a couple of left lanes of the westbound commute direction blocked. there may be a vehicle flipped there. checking out injuries and getting details coming up. developing this morning, reaction to the huge settlement involving dominion voting systems and fox news, as "today in the bay"'s drew petrimoulx

the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. each day we've seen our high temperatures coming up a couple of degrees, and today we're in the mid-60s for much of the south bay and reaching 65 degrees in walnut creek. in oakland today, 63 degrees, and for the coast we're still in the upper 50s. cool there with some low 60s for palo alto, san francisco reaching upper 50s to low 60s today. and into the mid-60s for santa rosa, clear lake 62 degrees. and then as we go to the next few days, we have more clear mornings, so look up. late at night, early in the morning, you might want to check out the lyrid meteor shower. you may see 15 to 20 per hour, but it does continue to peak over the next few days, reaching the peak on the 22nd. we'll see the rain staying farther to the north and our temperatures warming up

employees with backgrounds in technical user experience, software engineering, graphics programming and other roles, it was all announced on linkedin that they had been let go by the company. a meta folks person confirmed to cnbc just moments ago the cuts have started. at 6:32, a home depot in the east bay will reopen after one of its security guards was shot and killed during an apparent robbery. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us live outside of the store in pleasanton. what are police saying? i know they just released a statement, or at least home depot did. >> reporter: yeah, correct. home depot released a statement. good morning to you marcus and laura. the home depot in pleasanton is the scene where an employee was shot and killed yesterday while trying to prevent a theft. home depot just identified that employee as blake mose and they said we're heartbroken over this senseless tragedy. blake was our associate and friend and our hearts go out to his family and everyone who knew and loved him.
6:34 am
the shooting happened around 2:15 yesterday afternoon. pleasanton police say that blake was shot as he tried to stop a shoplifter, at least one employee we spoke with tells us blake, the man who was shot and killed, was a loss prevention worker. that was his role at the store. as for the suspects, police say alameda county deputies located the suspect vehicle and arrested the suspects miles away in oakland. a security expert we spoke with says this tragedy should not have happened, given the newest state regulations for security guards. >> the general rule of thumb, whether you're an employee, a security guard, a loss prevention, is observe and report. there's cameras in stores, there are witnesses, much better to be a witness and be alive than to be a participant and get severely injured or killed. >> i'm scared right now. i can never imagine that in pleasanton this kind of thing can happen.
6:35 am
>> reporter: pleasanton police say they will be giving an update after 9:00 this morning. home depot did shut down yesterday, but the location here in pleasanton did reopen for business about a half hour ago at 6:00 this morning. reporting live in pleasanton, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it will be a tough day for those employees. thank you for the latest. it is 6:34 right now. a huge develop for dub nation and the warriors. the nba suspending draymond green for tomorrow's game three against the sacramento kings. the nba made the announcement late last night. in case you somehow missed the video, here is the main reason. the stomp he gave kings star domantas sabonis. it came after sabonis grabbed green's leg. the commissioner's office also cited green's history of unsportsmanlike conduct as cause for the game one suspension. before the news came down, we spoke with a former warrior who says, as all this happened, the warriors were just trying to gain momentum.
6:36 am
>> at this point in the game, steph is looking for draymond to throw it back to him so he can make a play. draymond knows it and he's trying to run back. if anybody wants to re-enact that, if somebody grabs your foot like that, you step out of balance, whatever it is, i think draymond also tried to embellish the pull so that the refs would see it. all in all, i mean, you don't want to see any of this in the game. you just want to see a clean basketball game. >> during the game, draymond could be seen interacting dramatically with kings fans. some believe this may also have led to the suspension. when you think about the nba's mention of green's history of unsportsmanlike acts, in the 2016 conference finals draymond was fined but not suspended for kicking oklahoma city's steven adams in the groin, and in the 2016 nba finals he took a swipe at lebron james, also hitting him in the groin in game four. after green was suspended for

the resort will be open longer thanks to the record-breaking snowfall. palisades tahoe says it's broken the record for the most snowfall since the year 2000. the ski resort says they received 10 inches of snowfall monday night putting them at 710 inches of snow so far this season. the average season brings about 400 inches. this year palisades says they'll stay open until the fourth of july so you can ski in the morning and be on the lake in the afternoon. sounds very patriotic. >> it does. it will be definitely amazing to see that, especially with all of the sunshine that we have, and now after those massive storms we're still at more than three times the normal amount of snowfall, especially in the southern sierra. so we're setting records, not only going back the last 23 years, but also going all the way back to 1982 for some of our resorts. and we are heading into a weekend where we do have some more nice weather, with highs reaching into the upper 50s. but it's also going to be

warming up in the bay area. we're looking at temperatures in the low to mid-60s today, but then take a look at tomorrow's forecast, reaching 68 degrees in hayward and 71 in santa rosa. and it even warms up more heading into friday. mike, what's the update on that crash coming out of richmond? >> still there, still causing a slower drive. overall the east bay shows a typical pattern, slowing toward walnut creek, and even out of richmond toward san rafael, that part of the north bay. but getting there is an issue, down through richmond west 80 still reports a crash. that's where the backup is, but now more traffic coming off the bridge from san rafael adds to the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. more slowing for southbound 680, this crash still on the grid before you get to sunol boulevard. so gradual slowing as one lane is impacted and there's distraction. 84 coming in off of 580 just fine.
6:42 am
