7:40 am
to set the table hi, tom. good morning >> good morning. we all remember the chaos at america's airports last summer too few pilots and ground staff. thousands of flights canceled. with passengers surging back while the major airlines have managed to hire and train more pilots, the nation's regional airlines are warning they are facing an acute shortage of pilots, which could threaten service to small airports nationwide this summer could be a record breaker. >> reporter: countdown to the summer getaway don't expect an open middle seat it's shaping up to be another season of crowded airports and packed planes. >> good morning. how are you doing? >> i'm good. >> reporter: the head of the tsa tells bloomberg, the agency is preparing for a record number of air passengers throughout the summer, comfortably above pre-pandemic numbers with airports in orlando, dallas, houston and east coast hubs all expected to be the busiest.
7:41 am
with demand surging, american airlines is joining delta and united in temporarily cutting back some flights into new york airports citing air traffic controller shortages. it follows a nationwide pilot shortage, which has been easing in recent months, as the major carriers ramp up hiring and training still, many regional airlines are struggling to find enough pilots as some in the industry call for changing pilot qualification and training standards to address the shortage the head of the airline pilot's association says, that is a nonstarter >> this is no time to weaken safety standards >> reporter: we visited united's flight training center in denver last year, where the airline trains new and veteran pilots around the clock >> you're hitting the wind shear a little bit, so -- >> wind shear, going around. >> reporter: the faa requires pilots to go through simulator training every nine months, honing their skills and preparing for the unlikely emergency. meanwhile, pressure is building on southwest airlines after that

technical glitch on tuesday caused a nearly 2,500 airline flights to be delayed. southwest says data connection issues were to blame but it follows its meltdown last december, when outdated systems led to more than 16,000 of its flights being canceled two million passengers stranded. so what can you do to prepare for travel this summer given that flights are already filling up, experts say buy your tickets now. hopper.com reports domestic summer airfares will be nearly 18% more expensive than a 2019 pre-pandemic back to the pilot shortage at the regional airlines. you know, there's been talk of raising the mandatory retirement age from 65 to 67. but the unions and most airlines oppose that. and there's been talk of lowering the required hours pilots must have to become a commercial pilot, but there's not much support for that at all right now. so good time to become a pilot

7:44 am
so, diminishing the standards now is absolutely the worst thing we could do, especially after all of the aviation incidents we have had lately what we should be doing instead is looking at it very differently. we need to find more and better ways to have well-defined pathways and some financial assistance to be able to arm pilots with the knowledge, skill, and experience that they need to be able to do the job and keep all of their passengers and crew safe. >> you talk about experience and that brings us to the retirement age. the retirement age now is 65 some are proposing moving it a couple of years to 67. we hear the airlines and the unions are against that. where do you stand on that issue? >> that would be a band-aid, at best it would buy you a little time what would be more effective is if we have a national, you know, conversation about this. and probably in a government industry partnership to really encourage more people to join aviation and do some financial

should do that too general rules of thumb you should divide your weight by 2.2, times that by 25. so pretend you are 150 pounds, your kilograms would be 68 times 25 would give you 1,700 calories a day to figure out how many you should have. so maintaining would be 1,700. you wouldn't want to go below about 1,300. also, what are these heavy restrictions if we're omitting anything, only drinking water or special juices, probably not good. let's not do that. >> let's bring us to the next panel, which is, is it sustainable? some things you can do for a day or two days, and that's it but you actually need fuel to function >> that's right. please, everyone, eat protein and fat. you need that to fuel your body. also, fiber and hydration. the things that people don't realize in the summer, digestion is slowed. >> oh, okay. >> so what will help to speed it up fiber and water. so these are ways for you to help yourself in the summer. and also, fiber helps with weight management. so if you're eating extra vegetables and fruits, you know,

at lunch and dinner and a snack, you'll be able to get to that goal >> what is enough protein and fat? >> again, it does depend on average, fat is about 20 to 35% of your calorie requirement. and the protein, back to that calculation. it could be anywhere from 1 to 1.2 grams per kilogram if you were 68 kilograms, you would have about 68 to about 82 grams per day. for context, four ounces of chicken is 31 grams of protein >> how about hydration >> guys, we need like 98 ounces of water it's more than eight cups. it's more than eight cups. i like to get a 32-ounce container and fill that up two times. >> one of those big jugs people walk around with >> is it balanced? when you say 25% fat, i was like, great, eat a bunch of french fries but not all calories created equal. >> not all calories created equal. let's not omit certain foot groups

guys, carbs are not bad. they are our major energy source >> but we're also scared of carbs. >> we're scared of carbs because no one taught us how to eat them what is the appropriate amount for you and what does a carb mean one slice of bread, a half a cup of rice. so when you get your mind around that, it's easier for you to digest >> also, there are carbs in lentils and avocados, things you would not think about. >> they're different kinds of carbs. it's not always bread and cookies. >> so, let's move down to this one. this is a good one is it realistic for your lifestyle? we all go out to dinner, go to restaurants. you might have this regimen and some people are like, i can't go out to eat i'm on this special diet that's not fun and nobody wants to hang out with you >> so think about what your limits are what is your life like and how do you want to incorporate that? and is there a better way? if you're a busy mom with a big job and cooking for a family of six, how is all of this restriction going to work? are we buying all of these separate meals for people and

that becomes cost prohibitive? really, what is going to be sustainable long-term without having you lose your mind. >> and you just brought it up, cost because, is it affordable? oftentimes it's more expensive to eat healthfully >> that's. when you think about these fads, there's a juice cleanse, and you have to buy the whole system, and that's costing you hundreds of dollars over the months, and that's not sustainable and then all that money goes by the wayside. so you want to do the math like, can i achieve a goal while not blowing up my pocket and there are professionals out there. a dietitian, most of us take insurance. >> wait, what? >> yes, dietitians take insurance. and the cost is probably a co-pay you all have the benefit, so seek out help, just like you go to the doctor, go to the dentist, go to the dietitian >> we need all of that hard math over there >> i'll do it for you. >> vanessa, thank you very much. let's go over to bill and get a check of the weather >> i forgot to eat breakfast and i heard bread and cookies, that sounds really good right about now.
