tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  April 21, 2023 5:00am-6:01am PDT

5:00 am
right now at 5:00, facing a judge. the south bay mom accused of hosting alcohol-fueled parties for minors returns to court. a live report on the key testimony to expect and the plea deal her attorneys are considering. >> and the supreme court has until midnight tonight to make yet another decision about abortion. the potential impact this could have here in california. this is "today in the bay." 5:00 on your friday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. before we get to those top stories, we want to take you live to the attraction at six flags discovery, a new attraction. look at this. what is this? stick around, because in 15 minutes, bob redell is going to
5:01 am
be there live to give us more on what we can expect from this new attraction. you don't want to miss that. and i'm sure a lot of people this weekend want to get out and enjoy six flags. meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast. >> we're starting out with mild temperatures around the bay area, upper 40s, low 50s. it's going to be a warmer day and we'll have a couple of days that are going to be very nice and comfortable. but we have to make it there. by late morning into the afternoon we'll start to see temperatures going up. in oakland as you're stepping out the door, we're going from 50 degrees to some upper 60s by lunchtime. take a look at these high temperatures reaching mid-70s today, reaching 80 degrees possibly for the first time this year in the inland east bay. we'll be tracking that and take a look at the forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. developing now, the supreme court set a midnight deadline for itself to decide what to do about abortion pills. >> scott mcgrew is here right now. the issue isn't the abortion itself but the powers of the
5:02 am
food and drug administration. >> which affects abortion. good morning. the supreme court is considering a texas case where a single judge said the fda's ruling on an abortion drug that had been on the market for more than 20 years, used millions of times, is not safe, said the judge, and should be banned. an appellate court said you can't make decisions about things that happened decades ago, but the appellate court did say the fda's more recent decisions to make the pills available by mail and a few weeks later in pregnancy, even the fda's decision on dosages could all be restricted. many legal experts say it is unusual that all these courts got involved in the first place. judges making scientific and medical decisions, overruling the agency america set up to decide what drugs are safe and what aren't. abortion obviously a flashpoint for many americans, who have their own personal views. but if you were to think of some other drug, would it make sense
5:03 am
for a district court judge in texas to decide whether the fda's approval of an asthma drug was safe? there are three possible outcomes to the decision today. one, they could strike down everything and the pill remains on the market until the case finishes its way through the lower courts. two, they could decide to hear the case themselves. three, they could allow the rulings to stand with all the new restrictions on abortion pills. now, the supreme court thought it was done deciding abortion, but texas sent it right back to the high court. the chief justice roberts has publicly stated he is worried about the legitimacy of this court in the eyes of citizens, after all most americans support abortion in some form. >> and it's important to note while this case started in texas, of course it affects california. >> absolutely right, the supreme court covers all states, so a decision to restrict mifepristone would restrict it here as well. >> abortion would still be legal, at least here.
5:04 am
>> in california, yes. surgical abortion, always. the state is stockpiling a different abortion drug but experts don't prefer it as much as the drug that's in question in the texas case. but, yes, that would be available as well. >> interesting. thank you. in a matter of hours, a south bay mom accused of hosting alcohol-fueled parties is due back in court. >> "today in the bay"'s pete suratos joins us live from the county courthouse with more on some of the testimony that is expected and possible plea deal, i hear. >> reporter: yeah, shannon o'connor, the so-called party mom is due in court today and we could hear parameters when it comes to a plea deal in her case. she's accused of allegedly throwing these alcohol-fueled sex parties to underage teens. she did plead guilty to all the charges, dozens of charges, altogether about 39 charges, which include child
5:05 am
endangerment, providing alcohol to minors and sexual battery. it's relate to nonconsensual sexual between two daughters. they say she was allegedly grooming her daughters for her son and friends. earlier this week, her attorney wanted to know how much time she would face if she pled guilty to those charges. we could also hear from victims today. but the hearing is set for this morning at 9:00 a.m. we're live in san jose, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you. also in san francisco, a status hearing in the case against a former police officer charged in a deadly 2017 shooting. district attorney brooke jenkins has moved to dismiss the case, which her predecessor, boudin, first launched. the former officer faces manslaughter charges of the
5:06 am
shooting of o neil. a final decision is not expected before june. family and friends are mourning the life of a san jose man gunned down while walking his dog earlier this week. george torres was on blossom river drive on wednesday afternoon when he was shot and killed. torres took care of his mother, who lived with him. dozens of people from the neighborhood showed up at a vigil last night. his family says he touched many lives. >> my uncle was a very big piece in our family and the community, all these people are gathered today to try to find an answer or try to help out in some way and show appreciation. to the person that's out there, we just want justice. >> the family said they want to make it clear he was not involved in any gangs. police are asking for the public's help finding a suspect. all week long we are celebrating earth week and this morning we are hearing from google about ways it says that we can help the climate in
5:07 am
crisis. the company says searches for how to save energy at home is at an all-time high last year. a spokesperson says one simple device can keep those power bills in check. >> we know from the environmental protection agency that by adopting a smart thermostat at home people can save roughly about $50 a month on their electricity bill. >> the thermostat automatically adjusts the heating and cooling settings in your home. for more tips, visit sustainability.google/trend. >> let's take a look at oracle park this morning. game two of the giants series against the mets gets under way. giants are hoping for a victory after losing game one last night. you can catch all of the action right here on nbc bay area. that starts at 7:00 tonight. it should be nice. check in with meteorologist kari hall this morning, a chilly night at the ballpark last night. how do you think things are
5:08 am
going to shape up for game two? >> still going to be chilly tonight, but it will be warmer compared to yesterday. the wind, once it kicks up, it starts to make you feel quite cool. you want to make sure you're wearing layers. it's going to be gusty, and as we go into tonight the winds stay up and the temperatures go down. it's going to be another cold night out there at oracle park, developing into the upper 50s. but a very mild day ahead as we head for the upper 60s today. 71 in san mateo and mountain view reaching 78 degrees. we'll see upper 70s as well in the east bay, even a few low 80s. we'll get a look at the weekend forecast in a few minutes. mike has a look at where you may be stopping for lower gas prices. >> they seem to be higher now. sunnyvale, the costco at $4.19 a gallon. contra costa county, the concord super stop in concord.
5:09 am
it's $4.37. it seems like a bargain compared to sonoma county. the best is $4.69 at valero in santa rosa. we're looking at the roadways, speed limit for the most part. in the last few seconds i saw the bridge clear. there was a traffic break. you see the speed sensors coming off the treasure island area. there was a disabled vehicle and it looks like they were able to help it off the bridge. your commute going into oakland itself is moving smoothly. going out of oakland it's moving smoothly. that's the taillights in the city by the bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. april is autism acceptance month, and b.a.r.t. is helping kids practice their language skills. ahead on "today in the bay," the new announcement you may hear
5:10 am
next time you're waiting for your train. >> i'm bob redell. we'll take you live to valparaiso. six flags discovery kingdom with av a lon. "the doctor will see you now." but do they really? do they sesee all thatat you ? at k kaiser permrmanente all of us s work togetether to care e for all ththat is y.
5:11 am
5:12 am
good friday morning. right now at 5:12, as you're heading out in the north bay, we're checking out santa rosa. 54 degrees now. and it may cool down a few degrees around sunrise and then quickly start to warm up, as we
5:13 am
get the sunshine working and definitely warmer temperatures for today. it's going to be a warm weekend. we'll check that out coming up in a few minutes. the incident cleared from the bay bridge. the san mateo bridge is moving smoothly. i'm hearing about something else going on near the carquinez bridge. we'll follow up with that out of the north bay coming up. our own bob redell has never been known for his artistic talent. >> we wanted to get him a little help. this morning we sent him to get tips from an artist. joining us this morning, bob redell live for us at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo. i think you have a friend with you today. >> reporter: i do. good morning. i've got angela, i've got brie, and of course, avalon. avalon is here because -- good morning, avalon. he's part of a new program called paint and create. you come here to six flags and
5:14 am
you can be like angela, you sit up here, and what happens? >> then you get to actually help avalon create a beautiful one-of-a-kind masterpiece. so we're going to go ahead and demonstrate right now. he has a specialized brush that he uses to paint. >> let's see what he's painted. it's a self-portrait. he's using some red. is that a mackerel? >> it's herring in between as a reinforcer. you'll probably hear brie use the whistle. what avalon does, she bridges him, so then that way he knows that reinforcement is coming. he did a great job. >> i like his choice of orange. he started with red. >> he kind of went in the same spot. maybe we'll move it a little more for the next one. >> reporter: he's doing a realistic painting here. >> it's the artist's choice.
5:15 am
we let him do his creative thing. >> reporter: he's choosing yellow. i love the technique, the brush strokes. very consistent. >> it's like the sunset. >> does he have one more color here? >> i think he wants more yellow. >> and this will be a question for brie, but what does he think he's doing? just nodding his head? >> this is a form of training we use for all of our animals, and it's also enrichment for them. so, again, it's something that's fun, it's engaging for them to do, it helps keep them mentally stimulated. >> wow! i love what he did with the yellow. what he did with the yellow is not what i would have done because i'm not an artist. >> that is why he is the artist. >> reporter: brie was telling me earlier that dolphins have self-recognition. so if they looked at themselves in the mirror, they know that's them. where a dog is, like, who is the
5:16 am
other dog? do you think he has a recognition that he put this on the canvas? >> i'm sure he realizes that he did something great, because he got some rice fish and tactiles by brie and he's getting some great attention. >> a masterpiece. >> this is a ten plus, this is an ace. >> reporter: coming up, we're going to be headed to another part of the park because you guys have new babies on campus. >> that's right, we have some brand new animal ambassadors for you to meet. >> i love it. we're seeing different things, like a bird flying. >> we saw a superhero, a heart at the beginning. >> you're a good boy, avalon. >> what a great attraction. >> the best assignment of the day. it is 5:16 right now. trending this morning, in honor of autism acceptance month, b.a.r.t. has recreated some announcements with kids on the
5:17 am
autism spectrum. >> here is a preview of what you might hear while you're waiting for your next train. >> hey, everyone. i'm ryan. please stand clear of the closing doors. >> what an honor. i think it's really cool. b.a.r.t. is doing this to help kids practice their language skills. the announcements will run through the remainder of april. with rising rates of autism, b.a.r.t. hopes the announcements can serve to educate those who may not personally be affected by autism. >> i love that. it shows as a community we really all work together. it shows them what they can do, endless possibilities. >> if you haven't been on b.a.r.t. for a while, go jump on a train. >> at least go listen to the announcements. >> it might be a great weekend to get out in the bay area. >> it's going to be great this weekend. nice and warm and also sunny. when we first start to get the warmups around the bay area, we do want to give you a few safety reminders for the warmer weather. you want to make sure you're staying hydrated as our
5:18 am
temperatures heat up, you're wearing sunscreen as i did not yesterday, and i am really burnt right now. you do want to make sure you're doing that. never leave your kids and pets unattended in a vehicle. we do want to make sure that people are being safe out there. the warm weather continues into next week with a slight cooldown. here is a live look outside in san jose. we are going to see the sun coming up, just a few clouds in the mix and our temperatures will reach into the upper 70s this afternoon. and with not as much of a wind, that's going to feel a lot warmer, especially as we hit 80 degrees in santa rosa. it will be gusty and cool in san francisco with upper 60s. you head across the bay to hayward, it's going to be in the mid-70s. upper 70s and low 80s tomorrow as well. by sunday, it's going to be a little cooler, reaching low 70s in dublin and fremont, as well as mountain view, and 73 in novato. check out napa's ten-day
5:19 am
forecast. we're going from low 80s to mid-70s for sunday into monday, and then look at the spike in temperatures again for the end of next week w some mid-80s in the forecast. so we are not done just yet, as we are finally getting the warm weather we've been waiting on. and it continues into next week as we get more sunshine. mike, you have a new report out of the north bay? >> i had mentioned we're concerned about the approach to the carquinez bridge. let me show you the approach to many bridges both directions across the bay for the dumbarton, they're all moving smoothly. it is out of the north bay approaching westbound 80, the carquinez bridge, reports of a crash. there may be a vehicle blocking part of your right lane. no major slowing and no injuries. we'll have updates once chp finishes up paperwork. that's a great drive out of the north bay. highway 37 smooth and highway 4,
5:20 am
no early slowing because it's friday. we expect that to build a little later. that means the metering lights are probably not going to be turned on for a bit more. we didn't have any traffic breaks i saw for any period of time across the golden gate bridge, but i don't see the cones. i think the crew may be cleared for the weekend. back to you. good morning. what is happening with wind energy and what does it mean for your power bill? i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll take a closer look next. marcus? >> check this out, chris. kari and i went behind-the-scenes on the third hour of "today." i ran into dance cam mom. she showed me a few moves. she went viral back in 2016 because hoda retweeted her. nbc connection. >> you caught on pretty fast. >> we'll post more from the taping of the third hour of "today" that's going to happen right here on nbc bay area.
5:21 am
5:22 am
5:23 am
well, this morning we're taking our earthquake coverage offshore to make sure power bill more predictable. >> how does that all work? consumer investigator chris chmura joins us live in studio with what the pacific ocean has to do with our power bill. >> it has nothing to do with it today, but tomorrow is a different story. >> maybe in the future. >> exactly. the ocean is where the state is looking to create a massive amount of future electricity by
5:24 am
wind. now, the world's first utility scale wind project is right here in the east bay, altamont pass. now the state is looking west to install huge wind turbines over hundreds of square miles of pacific water. the chair of the emergency commission told me new offshore turbines will tower almost 800 feet tall, almost as tall as san francisco's trans america pyramid and those will generate a ton of electricity. >> just to give you a sense of how big these turbines are, one rotation of the turbine powers two houses for a day. >> he says offshore wind power is far cheaper to create than natural gas and cold-fired electricity. once they start growing, your power bill should be more predictable. they want to generate 25 giga watts, enough power to light up
5:25 am
25 million california homes using pacific wind. for earth week, we have spent the past few weeks exploring wind energy, including a look at why you might see fewer turbines in the hills today. you can watch our deep dive on our website right now on demand, just go to nbcbayarea.com/responds. it was fun in the hills. i will admit, just a couple sneezes. >> allergies. there's a lot of super blooms out there. >> if they could generate electricity from sneezes, we would be in good shape. >> that's so cool they're going to have that out there, which proves that we have to take more care of mother nature if she's going to help us. >> and be proactive in these innovative ways that we can find to create energy. >> if you look at what happened with our natural gas bills, they were just going nuts. and the argument here is that wind is actually pretty consistent, there's a battery element, but once they get that
5:26 am
set up, it should be more predictable. i can't say lower, but more predictable. >> good to know and good to have you in studio. an unexpected reunion letting a woman nearing the end of her life know a little more about the legacy she's actually going to leave behind. >> the chance meeting is allowing a south bay hospice social worker to repay that teacher's kindness decades later. good morning, everyone. i have a touching story to tell you about how an accidental reunion completed a circle of kindness. pedro cortez is a social worker for accent care. when he meant a new patient in january, her name sounded familiar. it wasn't until they started talking that pedro, who grew up speaking spanish, realized connie was the teacher who taught him how to read english all those years ago. she helped him early in his life and now he helps her near the end of hers. you can experience the whole
5:27 am
story at nbcbayarea.com/bay area proud, as well as hundreds of other stories about people being good to each other in the bay area. >> i'm going to have to watch that later because i have a feeling it's going to make me cry. what a touching thing. >> it shows you should be nice to everyone you meet because you never know. >> it's just a good thing to do. check out the bay area proud stories. they're really great. it's 5:26 right now. top stories we're following today, including -- >> this is excellent. this is awesome. this is worth coming here. >> oh, yeah, bring it back. the warriors dominating the kings. reaction from fans as the team wins that third game in the playoff series. everyone said it was going to be so hard, but now the team is prepping for the next big game. >> warriors fans are riding high, a's fans are heartbroken after that land deal announcement that could take the team to las vegas. we heard that they might leave

right now at 5:30, oakland outrage. city leaders and oakland a's fans upset about the team buying land in las vegas. only on nbc bay area, the a's president shares what is next for the team. >> plus, heating up. a live look outside across the bay area. meteorologist kari hall tracking the warmer weather headed our

way and when we could see even a cooldown as you make your weekend plans. this is "today in the bay." a very good morning to you. 5:30 right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. before we get to our top stories, the third hour of "today" is taking over the bay area, so ahead for you in a few minutes, we're going to go behind the scenes and get a look at their trip in wine country. it was a fun time. kari and i got to meet the whole crew. we're going to show it all to you. kari, yesterday we were out there, the weather, i would say pretty perfect. >> i know. i don't think it could get any better. it was spectacular. and it's going to be a nice weekend, but a little bit warmer. we've got so much going on. we're going to get to that in just a bit. let's get you out the door on this friday. we get a live look in dublin. it's going to be a clear and mild start as you're on your way
5:32 am
to work. upper 40s, calm wind, we'll be in the upper 50s by 9:00 and then low 70s by lunchtime as we head for the upper 70s for today. nice boost in temperatures over yesterday, so i'm glad that we were out there yesterday in the north bay. we're going to see temperatures reaching 80 degrees today. mike, you were looking at activity on the bay bridge. >> for a few minutes we had a traffic break. they cleared the disabled vehicle. now the direction toward san francisco, the commute direction, that's starting to build. we're seeing slowing, although the camera looks like it's smooth, the sensors show slowing just past the metering lights, which will likely be activated in the next few minutes. slowing just developing out of vallejo for west 37. san jose and the south bay shows a little slowing and that's an early start. maybe some folks are trying to make an early end today. back to you. >> thank you so much. this morning, did you feel
5:33 am
it? a 3.2 earthquake striking near hollister. people could feel it as far as salinas. so far, we're getting no reports of any damage. and the reality of oakland a's move to las vegas is setting in and the fans are not happy about this. they're actually mad. and so is mayor sheng thao who said to the team, use oakland as a leverage for the deal. >> reporter: "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us with how the team is trying to justify the move. the team is hoping fans will stick with them. >> that's what they're hoping for. the president of the a's did a one-on-one interview with us and said after 0 years of trying to work out a stadium deal in oakland, the team had to do what the city has to do, which is to keep things financially afloat. >> we've been on parallel paths for about two years, looking at oakland, doing everything we can to make that happen, looking at las vegas as another option. we're really at the point where we needed to make a hard
5:34 am
decision. and with the timeline challenges in oakland, this was really an actual that we felt necessary to put the franchise on stable financial footing. >> now, that timeline is for major league baseball to finalize plans for that move by next year, january. and it is a disappointment that the howard terminal waterfront ballpark plan couldn't come to be, he says. however, mayor sheng thao says the city and a's were closer than ever to the ballpark deal than ever before, and having secured more than $375 million in offset infrastructure was a sign of that. she says she was blindsided by the announcement the team purchased 49 acres off the las vegas strip near the raiders new stadium, and now she says for oakland there's no turning back. >> oakland is not interested in being used as leverage in the a's negotiations with las vegas,
5:35 am
and it is disrespectful to our residents and fans to string the city along this way. >> it felt like the final dagger in the heart of oakland sports fans. >> i turned my back on the a's, they turned their back on us. >> according to the a's president, if the mlb approves the relocation, the team could break ground on the new stadium in 2024, with the first pitch in 2027. in that time, the team will have to figure out a large part of the financing, including a $2 billion relocation fee. the a's still have a lease in oakland through the 2024 season. we'll have to see whether or not the fans show up to watch. >> it's tough to see this. >> it really is. thank you, kris. a happier note on the sports front here in the bay area, let's talk about dub nation. the warriors hardly missing a beat without one of their stars, draymond green. >> green was suspended for one game. gary payton jr. was out as well. the warriors really roared back
5:36 am
to life, probably just being at home maybe with the crowd, last night against the kings. winning last night's game three. if the warriors hope to come back to win the first playoff series, is critical. steph curry led the way, dropping points, and kevon looney pulled in 20 rebounds. fans were certainly pumped. >> looney, 20 rebounds? >> this is worth coming here. >> we're so happy and we know we're going to take care of business on sunday. >> the dubs got an added boost with e-40 in the house. you'll recall he was kicked out of the game in sacramento due to a bit of a misunderstanding with fans. the kings have since apologized. sunday's game four is at chase center on sunday afternoon. new this morning, certainly not 30 rock, but quite the field trip for the third hour "today" show team. >> they're here in the bay area in wine country. kari and i got to go behind the
5:37 am
scenes and get a look at what they're up to. with all the lights, cameras and people, there is no doubt something exciting is happening in sonoma county. sheinelle jones, craig melvin, dylan dryer and al roker, along with their behind the scenes team, bringing the show to the bay area. >> i literally woke up to an email in my email box in the morning and said, okay, i'm not even waiting. i'm not talking to my husband, because i have a 7 month old. i'm just going to sign up. >> instead of being on the plaza, the viewers were at st. francis winery, getting an up-close look at what it takes for a show like this. >> getting everything set up just right. >> the third hour of the "today" trip is sponsored by sonoma county tourism, highlighting local artists, food, and of course wine. >> the weather is fantastic, the wine, the food, the people.
5:38 am
everybody has been so welcoming. it's been fun. >> without them, we're not here. so to show up to a place like this on this beautiful day, and folks have signs. not just signs that they picked up, they made the signs last night. >> it wasn't hard to convince them to come. >> we don't get to come out here as often as we like, because it takes a while to get out here. if we had our druthers, we would be in a bay area a lot more. >> the beauty of wine country is just one of the treasures many hope is here for years to come. how important is it for us to do our part to continue to have beauty like this? >> unbelievable amounts of rain you saw, that's what climate change is doing. it makes violent swings of extreme weather and so it's so important for us to all really buckle down. >> thank you all so much. i appreciate it. >> pleasure. >> make sure you stick around all this morning because you can watch the third hour coming up at 9:00 right here on nbc bay
5:39 am
area. it's going to be a fun show. >> see what they did behind the scenes. >> we were, like, what is the weather going to be like? we want to stick around. >> it's going to be nice. >> it's going to be nice, but you do want to plan your day around the weather. we do see a lot of sunshine headed our way and it's going to be warming up quite a bit. we're a little spoiled and think upper 70s, low 80s is a little warm. but we do start out with cool temperatures in the morning and it's going to feel a little like summer for us. if you're going out to the giants game later this evening, that's where we have the cooler temperatures. we're only going to be in the low 60s at first pitch and it's going to be windy. some of those gusts up to about 20 miles per hour. and then coming down to the upper 50s as we go late into this evening. overall, a great night for some baseball. we're also have some events going on for earth day this weekend, free national parks at
5:40 am
muir woods. you'll see temperatures in the mid-60s there. you may wrap up the weekend with mike inouye in japantown and it's going to be nice and a little cooler compared to saturday. by sunday we're seeing temperatures in the low 70s. you may be hitting the road as well, heading to coachella this weekend. and it is going to be so hot out there, reaching into the low to mid-90s for highs, 97 on sunday. our overnight temperatures will be in the upper 60s. yeah, we have a lot going on around the bay area. earth week, lots of sports events. hopefully you'll have a chance to enjoy it. heading to work this morning, you're seeing some traffic. >> the first one is your typical build, north 101 just north of 680 to oakland road and we see that as we approach 540. i saw a little slowing north as
5:41 am
well, reports of fire in the grass, should be addressed by a crew heading out right now. we'll track both of these, so far standard. this has been an unusual slowdown. we keep getting updates after the fact many times, so yesterday we heard that the northbound lane was going to be closed, as we saw slowing. i checked out what was going on from the summit to bear creek road. this morning they say the same thing, they're going to be working on the paving northbound so that's going to be eventually great, but they did the tree trimming and now north 17 after 9:00, you'll see slowing heading from the santa cruz side. southbound, you'll be all right heading toward the area. along the peninsula, the cal trains service between santa clara station and the menlo park station will be cut off because they're continuing to do the work. there's the electrification project. they have to shut down certain portions of the track. and then today turning it up over at oracle park, tonight's
5:42 am
game for the giants 7:15. >> fun. a lot of things to do. it's 4:51 right now. we know over the past few years wildfires have been more frequent. ahead, the program they're heading to use incarcerated people to fight those fires. also, the new group set to graduate on earth day tomorrow. >> in business news, the pope and lebron james, what do they have in common? we'll take a look coming up. >> definitely want to stick around. good one. first, we're moving you forward this morning with our school shout-out series. today's comes from a group of students who helped our sister station telemundo 48 plant a tree for earth week. >> good morning! >> if you would like to see students you know taking part in our friday shout-outs, just email their video to us, send it
