>> and an 81-year-old woman in san francisco is fighting eviction. we'll tell you what went wrong and what she hopes will happen next. this is "today in the bay." a very good monday morning to you. 5:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. >> let's start out with a look at that forecast. it looks nice and clear. >> it's nice and clear. still a little breezy in spots this morning. and temperatures are slightly cooler compared to what we had on saturday. and then taking a look at our live view in san jose, it's a mostly clear start. our monday morning is at about 51 degrees right now. we may cool down another couple of degrees over the next couple of hours, but then we see the trend as our temperatures start to warm up fairly quickly. we'll be in the mid-60s at noon, reaching the low 70s for today, and upper 60s for hayward and dublin, 68 in oakland today and 71 in novato. it's going to get very toasty

this week. we'll get a look at that in a few minutes. chp is talking about the san mateo bridge. >> they mentioned that it got breezy and gusty, they were pushed around a little bit across the san mateo bridge. now, the larger vehicles, we're talking about a box truck, higher profile, taller, getting pushed around from time to time, especially if it's not a loaded truck. do just mind that, larger vehicles next to you as you drive across the span. so far, there are no issues. speed sensors show a great drive. 680 has a closure northbound. crews must be getting ready to move as you travel north to pleasanton. no backup at the bay bridge or on the peninsula side as well. back to you. >> thank you very much. we start with breaking news in san francisco, multiple people shot in popular north beach. it happened on grant avenue near columbus, about 11:00 at night. at least one person is dead, four others are injured. a victim died at the scene.

police say officers found a gun nearby. so far, police are revealing little es surrounding the investigation, including what led up to the shooting. bob redell is gathering the latest developments and will join us with a live report coming up in about 30 minutes. our coverage also continues online. developing this morning, a mother and her teenage daughter are dead after a weekend shooting in oakland. it happened late saturday night on birch street. family members have identified the victims as rebecca jenkins and her 13-year-old daughter, desiree. a 12-year-old girl who was friends with the family is still in the hospital. they say that shooting started as a domestic violence incident between the mother and her boyfriend, who police say was arrested at the scene. rebecca also leaves behind three young daughters who were not injured. in stockton today, the suspected serial killer prosecutors say is behind seven murders, including two in oakland, will appear in court for a pre tile hearing.

authorities arrested wesley brownlee last fall. he has not entered a plea. the struggles of trying to make it in the bay hitting home for an elderly woman. she's about to lose her home because of a $9,000 property tax bill. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is here looking at what went wrong. what's expected to happen next for that struggling homeowner? >> reporter: she's an 81-year-old woman who lives in san francisco. she tells us she got a knock on her door out of the blue from someone serving her eviction papers. she expects that today the sheriff could show up to enforce that order. this is rose marie, who has lived in her upper haight condo for 30 years through a joint ownership agreement. in july of 2021 she says she was pressured into a loan to pay her $9,000 property tax note. in february of last year -- or this year, we should say, she got a knock on her door, now she's putting up a fight with help from the nonprofit legal assistance for the elderly.

>> i'm here to repossess your house, and i said, what do you mean? he says, well, unless you have $13,000 to pay off this debt you have, it's going to be sold in about 29 minutes. >> mrs. benter contacted our office and we immediately jumped in to assist her. unfortunately, ms. benter contacted us just after the foreclosure sale had happened, but it didn't deter us at all from doing everything that we can to try to turn back this foreclosure that's based on a completely unconscionable and predatory and fraudulent loan. >> rosemarie's home was sold for about half of what it's worth. a buyer posted a notice that she had three days to vacate. the attorney tells us today they plan to file suit against the new owner, the broker, the

lender, and they will ask the court to find ms. benter the lawful owner of the condo. the nonprofit will represent her legally in any eviction filings. we did reach out to the attorney for the buyer, we haven't gotten a comment back yet. ms. benter says if she doesn't win the fight to keep her home, she doesn't know where she'll go because in san francisco she says she can't afford anything else. >> thank you, kris. 5:05 right now. turning to decision 2024 and a big announcement expected from president biden as soon as tomorrow. that is when he's expected to launch his campaign for re-election next year. a new nbc news poll shows most people do not want to see a rematch between president biden and former president trump. biden's impending re-election is actually being met with some criticism and some skepticism, even within his own party. president biden preparing to announce his re-election bid as soon as tuesday. >> president biden has such a strong record to run on. he has gotten this country through the pandemic, he has the backs of the american people and americans know that. >> reporter: the latest nbc news poll shows 70% of americans believe mr. biden should not run for a second term, including 51% of democrats. many cite his age as a major reason why. at 80, biden is already the oldest president to ever serve. his allies contend he is fit to do the job. >> he's an active president who is meeting the challenges of america every day. >> reporter: topping the list of potential republican challengers, former president trump, who was recently indicted

thank you, brie. 5:08 right now. the granddaughter of labor icon's cesar chavez is expected to be launched to manage president biden's campaign. sources say julie chavez rodriguez has been chosen, he's currently an adviser and worked in former president obama's administration. happening this morning, climate activists plan to gather in san francisco ahead of wells fargo annual shareholders meeting tomorrow. this is video of a similar protest back in 2019. advocates are asking the bank to pass shareholder resolutions to stop investments in fossil fuels, prevent green-washing and push the bank to create a climate transition plan. in 2021, wells fargo said that it will work on lowering carbon emission by the year 2030. the company also has a goal of achieving net zero greenhouse

stock symbols when buying and selling. this is best buy and this is bed bath & beyond. the retailer was one of those meme stocks for a while. young investors on reddit and other social media encouraging each other to buy shares. in fact, bed bath & beyond issued $300 million in new shares very recently, even after we knew the company was in trouble, and some people bought them up. those shares will now be worthless, after the bankruptcy. also gift cards and coupons. we've been warning about this for a few months. spend them now, like today. comcast, the parent company of this tv station, announced sunday that nbcuniversal jeff shell is leaving the company, effective immediately. shell seen in video, also issued a statement noting that sunday would be his last day as ceo due to an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which he said he, quote, deeply regrets. the mutually agreed on departure

follows the company's investigation led by outside counsel into a complaint of inappropriate conduct. >> over the weekend, a host of twitter accounts like m.i.t. were given blue checks by twitter even though they didn't pay for them and they don't want them. a journalist calls this getting lebronned. lebron james also got a checkmark against his will after saying he didn't want one and wouldn't pay for one. twitter gave john mccain's account a blue star. he definitely did not sign up for it, because as his son pointed out on social media, he's not alive. the nobel prize winning economist paul krugman got a check against his will and he complained about it and elon musk responded with the image of a crying baby. it is not cool to have a blue check anymore. if you get one against your will, no, no, no, i don't want a blue check. >> it's the opposite of what it used to be. >> an absolute flip flop.

over the weekend that brought in the cooler temperatures, we're still going to see that today, a little bit breezy with a mild start to the week, but we are headed for a warming trend starting tomorrow, and then by the middle of the week we're talking about the bay seeing highs in the 70s and 80s. inland it could be near 90 degrees. as you're stepping out in brentwood, we're in the mid-50s. we'll be at 61 degrees at 9:00 and reaching 71 degrees at noon. we're seeing temperatures today reaching into the mid-70s. we'll see a high of 73 in livermore, 75 in napa, and 77 in santa rosa, while near the coastline we're still in the upper 50s and low 60s. then as we take it into tomorrow, you'll notice even the coast will be much warmer, reaching into the mid-60s there and low 80s for concord. fairfield, 86 degrees and 80 in san jose. then by wednesday, take a look

at this, we're blasting the air-conditioning as we reach into the mid to upper 80s for the south bay and even up to 86 degrees for much of the north bay. going forward, the warmer air continues for the middle to end of the week, but it doesn't last too long before we get a cold front coming in. and by the weekend it's going to be significantly cooler. so take a look at brentwood. are you ready for 91? we're going to see that on thursday, 90 on friday, and then low 80s for sunday into early next week. then there will be a significant drop of temperatures, back into the 70s. we'll see the spike in temperatures for quite a while. i'm rubbing my eyes and knowing that the sneezes are coming over the next few days with that kind of weather. mike, you have a new view of the bay bridge. >> over here from emeryville, you see a crystal clear view and a smooth drive. no problems reported by chp and

issue. >> he asked our investigator chris chmura's team to dial up the pressure. >> good monday morning. norman in brentwood told us he traded in his old iphone 11 for a new iphone 14, with verizon last year. he showed us a screen grab of a chat he had with a verizon rep confirming he would get $800 in credit, broken up over his monthly bills. norman says he shipped the phone to verizon and shared with us delivery confirmation from the cargo company. norman contacted us because he says those billing credits came up $155 short. he says he contacted verizon and waited. went to a verizon store and waited. with no movement, he asked us to call verizon. we did. norman said verizon then gave him seven additional credits of $22.22 each, a grand total of $155.54, to be exact. he's now happy. we asked verizon for a statement but didn't hear back. cell phone issues are one of, if

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get you started with the day. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect from the forecast this week, and coming after a nice weekend. >> it was such a nice weekend and it was comfortable for the most part. we felt the wind kick up yesterday and a cooldown in our temperatures just by a few degrees. it's still breezy this morning as you get ready to head out in oakland. our temperatures are in the upper 40s. wu do need a jacket for the next few hours. and then the rest of the day is going to feel comfortable. we'll be at 63 at lunchtime, 68 degrees later today, and reaching the low 70s for san jose, mid-70s for concord, and we are going to start out the week mild with near-average temperatures, but then we're going to summer. we'll talk about the spike in temperatures. mike, you were telling me about a new crash in sunnyvale. >> three vehicles involved, this is north 101.

north 101 and mathilda, it looks like everything has cleared off to the shoulder. no injuries, that's the important part, and no slowing shows up on the sensors. we'll track that traveling north. the rest of the south bay has traffic at interchanges moving slowly, including the contra costa area. vasco a little slowing toward 580. >> thank you, mike. breaking news overnight in san francisco, one person is dead, at least four others are believed to have been injured after a shooting in popular north beach. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live at the scene. this is one of the city's busiest tourist destinations. what are police telling you? >> reporter: this happened here in north beach. good morning to you, laura and marcus. sfpd tells us that possibly as many as five people were shot. this happened around 11:00 last night behind me here at grant and columbus, just on the edge of little italy. this is video from the scene.

we know one person died on the sidewalk in front of the liquor store and we know a woman was shot by the nightclub about a block down the street. we don't know her condition or the condition of the other people who might have been shot. video shows a handgun in the middle of the street. a man visiting san francisco from the uk says he heard about 10 to 12 gunshots last night. >> i looked out the window, there was a guy being dragged in the street from a car. the car drove off, the guy got dragged back over to the convenience store. and a girl ran down here, got shot as well, yeah. >> reporter: it's not clear if police have identified any suspects or made any arrests. we have reached out to pd. we're still waiting to hear back. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell. when the story first happened, we sent you an alert right away on our free nbc bay

area app. make sure you download it if you haven't already done so. that way you'll get updates on this story and much more sent to your phone. chp is investigating an unusually deadly and dangerous weekend on bay area roadways after a string of wrong-way crashes. four people died, five others were injured in five wrong-way crashes stretching between san rafael and sunnyvale, about 36 hours later. a wrong-way head-on crash on highway 237 yesterday morning left two men dead in sunnyvale. about 12 hours later, chp officers responded to reports of another wrong-way driver on the same highway. that driver was having a medical emergency, was taken to a local hospital. in oakland yesterday morning, a wrong-way driver on westbound 580 near seminary avenue struck an oakland tree maintenance truck. both drivers survived. the chp says the wrong-way driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. all of that follows a crash on southbound 280 near woodside on

saturday. chp officers arrested the driver of a white sedan, a campbell woman who they say struck the driver of a bmw. >> both vehicles crashed, the driver of the bmw died at the scene. >> the victim has been identified as 54-year-old eden palmer of san francisco. her 14-year-old son suffered major injuries. the chp says the suspect may have been driving under the influence of drugs. 5:34 right now. developing, oakland teachers are getting closer to another possible strike. it comes in the wake of what teachers called stalled contract talks. but the district says it remains confident that it can still reach a deal with the union. teachers are threatening to walk off the job as soon as next monday. at least two days of negotiations are already scheduled for this week. happening today, sonoma county leaders will consider a new crackdown on short-term rentals like airbnb. two big proposals are on the

table. one would put more operating standards in place, including limiting guests to 12 people and establishing stricter parking rules. the other would place caps on certain neighborhoods to prevent over-saturation of rentals. it comes with the vacation rental moratorium set to expire on may 9th. caps will be re-examined later this summer. warriors fans prefer veteran savvy over youthful experience, but for a brief moment those veteran warriors almost get a critical game slip away. yesterday at chase center dub nation had to sweat out the game four. a buzzer-beating score by klay thompson put the warriors up by 10 after three quarters, but the kings battled back with under a minute left. steph curry called a time-out the warriors did not have. that gave the kings the ball.

the majority of democrats don't want president biden to run for a second term. >> scott mcgrew, we may find out tomorrow that president biden will be running again. >> for a second term, exactly. conventional wisdom is he'll make the official announcement tuesday. the same voters who don't want him to run say they'll vote for him if he does run. the main problem they have with the president is age. president biden is 80 years old. if he served a second term, he would be 86 by the end of that four years. that would be the oldest president to serve by a long shot. president biden right now is the oldest president elected. that same nbc poll found 38% of americans have a favorable view of biden, 48% negative, which is not very popular, but it's more popular than his likely opponent, donald trump. his numbers are 34% positive, 53% negative. now, no matter who you may vote for, the poll shows most

beautiful sunrise with the transamerica pyramid lit up. to me, it looks purple, but it's supposed to be warriors colors. i'll leave it at that. we are starting out with breezy winds and mild temperatures for the start of the week. now, it's going to continue to heat up over the next few days. the bay will reach into the 70s and low 80s, but inland it could be near 90 degrees over the next few days. we're enjoying the cooler weather while we have it. at oracle park this evening it will be breezy and temperatures dropping to the low 50s after hitting 62 degrees. we'll reach 68 degrees in oakland, 69 in dublin and 73 in los gatos. tomorrow, 80 degrees starting to pop up on the map for our interior valleys, and then by wednesday we're seeing upper 80s. are you asked for this? it's going to feel like summer for a few days. and we're also seeing the rain staying well to the north of us

as the high pressure builds and the warm air continues for much of the week. then the weekend, there will be cooler weather coming our way, especially sunday into monday. take a look at ukiah going from 73 today to 87 tomorrow. big spike in temperatures, and there we will be hitting the low 90s. but then as we take it into the end of the weekend into next week, we'll bring it back to spring. but we will have several days of some hot temperatures headed our way. a lot of the inland temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s for the end of the week. mike, you're seeing a backup at the toll plaza. >> we are. i believe the spring breaks are down now all around the bay area. we are seeing the backup starting to form on the regular schedule here, but maybe a little lighter. some of the folks may be held up in the north bay. the metering lights have been activated. slowing for 37 and also for highway 4, but up here we talked about the crash. there may be two crashes in the same area coming back, lagoon
