6:02 am
north 101 shows a typical pattern from 680 to oakland road. no other outstanding issues, just green sensors. over here we're looking at a little build out of pleasanton, off the dublin interchange. more traffic flow coming in out of the altamont pass. the castro valley y holding steady with brake tapping through hayward. and then easing up by union city. slowing for 37, highway 4 and down through richmond. back to you. >> thank you very much. we start this hour with breaking news that we're following in san francisco, multiple people shot in popular north beach. we have a live look at the scene, in fact, this morning. it happened on grant avenue near columbus, about 11:00 last night. at least one person was killed, four others injured. we know a victim died at the scene. police say officers found a gun nearby. so far, police are revealing little else surrounding the
6:03 am
investigation, including what led up to the shooting. our bob redell is there, gathering the latest developments for us. he will join us with a live report coming up in about 30 minutes. our coverage also continues online at nbcbayarea.com. developing this morning, a mother and her daughter, teenage daughter, they are dead after a weekend shooting in oakland. it happened late saturday night on birch street. family members have identified the victims as rebecca jenkins and her 13-year-old daughter, desiree. a 12-year-old girl who was friends with the family is still in the hospital. they say that shooting started as a domestic violence incident between the mother and her boyfriend. police say that he was arrested there at the scene. rebecca also leaves behind three young daughters who were not injured. happening in stockton today, the suspected serial killer prosecutors say is behind seven murders, including two in oakland, will appear in court for a pretrial hearing. authorities arrested wesley

brownlee last fall. the struggles of trying to make it in the bay hitting home for one elderly woman about to lose her home, not because of any eviction moratorium, but because of a $9,000 property tax bill. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is here looking at what went wrong. kris, what's expected to happen next for her? i mean, this is tough. >> yeah, so she's 81 years old and she lives in san francisco. she tells us she got a knock on her door out of the blue for her from someone telling her that her home was to be sold at a foreclosure auction within the hour. she expects that now today the sheriff could show up to enforce an eviction order. this is rosemarie benter who has lived in her condo for 30 years. in july of 2021 she says she was pressured into signing a loan to pay property taxes, plus interest and fees and the $13,000 debt resulted in the fateful knock on her door this february. now she's putting up a fight
6:05 am
with the help from nonprofit legal assistance for the elderly. >> i'm here to repossess your house, and i said, what do you mean? he says, well, unless you have $13,000 to pay off this debt you have, it's going to be sold in about 29 minutes. >> ms. benter contacted our office and we immediately jumped in to assist her. unfortunately, ms. benter contacted us just after the foreclosure sale had happened, but it didn't deter us at all from doing everything that we can to try to turn back this foreclosure that's based on a completely unconscionable and predatory and fraudulent loan. >> rosemarie benter's home was sold at a foreclosure auction for half of what it's worth. it's $1.4 million in market value. now, on friday the buyer posted a notice that she had three days
6:06 am
to vacate. her attorney tells us that today they plan to file suit against the new owner, against the broker, against the lender that issued that loan that resulted in the foreclosure. they will also ask the court to find ms. benter the lawful owner of that condo. the nonprofit will also represent her in any eviction filings. we have reached out to the attorney for the buyer for comment. we haven't gotten one yet. when we do, we'll let you know. ms. benter says if she doesn't win the fight to keep her home, she doesn't know where she's going to go, because in san francisco she says she can't afford anything else. >> kris, thank you. 6:05 right now. turning to decision 2024. big announcement expected from president biden as soon as tomorrow. that's when he's expected to launch his campaign for re-election next year. but an nbc news poll shows that most people don't want to see a rematch between president biden and former president trump.
6:07 am
"today in the bay"'s brie jackson is live in washington following all of this for us. brie, no big surprise that president biden is going to announce he's going to run again. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning, marcus. you're right, it's not a big surprise. it's something that we've been anticipating for some time now. but president biden's impending re-election bid does face skepticism, even from within his own party. president biden preparing to announce his re-election bid as soon as tuesday. >> president biden has such a strong record to run on. he has gotten this country through the pandemic. he has the backs of the american people and the americans know that. >> reporter: the latest nbc news poll shows 70% of americans believe mr. biden should not run for a second term, including 51% of democrats. many cite his age as a major reason why. at 80, biden is already the
6:08 am
oldest president to ever serve. his allies contend he is fit to do the job. >> he's an active president and is meeting the challenges of america every day. >> reporter: topping the list of potential republican challengers, former president trump, who was recently indicted and still faces other criminal investigations. >> i will continue to fight for our values, our faith and our freedom. >> reporter: our nbc news poll shows voters do not have the appetite for a biden/trump rematch. a sentiment even some republicans agree with. >> and so we don't want to repeat that. it takes alternatives. >> reporter: but the gop is divided over who should lead the party. >> they're supporting former president trump over these indictments and there's a lot of support there. republicans want someone who can win in november of '24. donald trump is a loser. >> reporter: former vice president mike pence says he'll make a decision about challenging his old boss before
6:09 am
late june. and president biden is expected to release a video announcing his re-election bid. that could happen as soon as tuesday, tomorrow, which also marks the four-year anniversary of his 2020 campaign. and, marcus, new this morning, sources tell nbc news that finish the job is expected to be one of the key themes in the video once it is released. that's a message you may remember that was key to president biden's state of the union address. >> that we do. brie jackson in washington this morning, thank you. meanwhile, the granddaughter of labor icon cesar chavez is likely to be tapped to manage president biden's re-election campaign. sources close to the president say that julie chavez rodriguez has been chosen for the job. she's currently a senior white house adviser and worked in former president biden's administration and previously served on vice president harris' staff and presidential campaign. happening this morning, climate activists plan to gather in san francisco ahead of wells

fargo annual shareholders meeting tomorrow. this is video of a similar protest back in 2019. advocates are asking the bank to pass shareholder resolutions to stop investments in fossil fuels, prevent green-washing and push the bank to create a transition plan. in 2020 wells fargo said they will work on lowering carbon emissions by 2030 and has a goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. it is 6:09 on your monday morning right now. and taking a live look outside, the sun is up over the bay area. a live look at san jose. kari has a look at our forecast for today. another nice day ahead? >> yes. it's going to be a great start to our week with a little bit of a breezy, cool skies. right now temperatures in the upper 40s and we're at 46 in oakland. it is 47 in livermore, 44 in santa rosa. and then as we get ready to head
6:11 am
out door for the school day in sunnyvale, sweater weather for the start, in the low 50s, but it's going to be comfortable and sunny, reaching into the upper 60s today for the time the last school bell rings. we'll be in the mid-70s for concord and martinez, 75 in napa and 77 in santa rosa, while san francisco will be in the low 60s today. we're going to be heating up over these next few days and i'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you have a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> i have good news. the best reported in the state is in sunol, $3.87 at the sunol super stop. another good listing, second one here, in the south bay. this time it's platinum gas on washington street, $3.95 in the city of santa clara. and in marin county, we get what we get, $4.29 at mill valley's hq fuel on shoreline highway. we're looking over toward the
6:12 am
roadways where the speeds are moving smooth around the bay. we're starting to see a build, typical patterns. we continue to see a problem for the north bay. chp still has lanes blocked and another traffic break heading westbound. your commute direction. the backup through vacaville making things a little easier. back to you. a long-awaited light rail extension coming to the south bay. coming up on "today in the bay," we're going to tell you about the big announcement expected from vta and the updated timeline on when crews are expected to break ground. >> the timeline on the end of bed bath & beyond just a couple of days. spend the coupons now. let's take you out to the futures this morning. take a look at what wall street plans. it looks like a whole bunch of unchanged. and a box office break-in, but it wasn't a burglar. we're going to tell you how a moose got loose and his go-to movie snack. you're watching "tay in the odod anand this is s rebaady to go ononline. any questitions? -y-yeah, i gotot one. hohow about ththe best network imimaginable??

6:14 am
6:15 am
good monday morning. it is 6:14. let's head up the peninsula over to foster city, as you're stepping out the door it's in the upper 40s. it's still pretty breezy out there, a cool start. but then going into today, mostly sunny and it's going to warm up nicely. it's going to be a beautiful afternoon. we'll have a taste of summer this week. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. we're looking at the san mateo bridge, the taillights picking up the volume, but
6:16 am
holding the pace on the right side. you can see the speed limit sign, 65. we're just about there across the span. there is a build, of course, continuing at the bay bridge. good morning. very happy monday to you. bed bath & beyond said over the weekend that it was filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy. now, normally we don't show the stock price with this many decimal points, but it shows you how low shares in bed bath & beyond have gotten. by the way, some investors will confuse these two stock symbols when buying and selling. you can see where. that's best buy and this one is bed bath & beyond. the retailer was one of those meme stocks for a while. young investors on reddit and other social media encouraging each other to buy shares. in fact, bed bath & beyond issued $300 million in new shares very recently, even after we knew the company was in trouble, and some people bought them up. those shares will be worthness
6:17 am
worthless after the bankruptcy. also, gift cards and coupons, we've been warning for months, spend them now, like today. comcast, the parent company of this tv station, announced universal ceo jeff shell is leaving the company effective immediately. shell issued a statement noting that sunday would be his last day as ceo due to, quote, an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which he says he, quote, deeply regrets. the mutually agreed on departure follows the company's investigation led by outside counsel into a complaint of inappropriate conduct. >> also, over the weekend, a host of twitter accounts like m.i.t. were given blue checks by twitter, even though the accounts didn't pay for them and don't want them. the journalist swisher calls this getting lebronned. the basketball player lebron james also got a checkmark against his will after saying he
6:18 am
didn't want one, wouldn't pay for one. twitter also gave john mccain's account a blue star. that hasn't been updated for a while. he didn't sign up for it, because as mccain's son pointed out on social media, he's not alive. the nobel prize winning economist paul krugman got a blue star against his will, complained about it online, and elon musk responded with the image of a crying baby. so it is one of those very strange things, where we've talked about how these blue stars are going to confuse people, what is authenticated and what is not. now it makes it look as if celebrities are endorsing this idea of paying for a blue star. >> they don't want it. >> and twitter doesn't. >> and he's playing games a little bit, too. >> for sure. >> to get people talking. 6:18 right now. happening today, state transportation leaders are expected to make a major announcement about that long-awaited vta extension. here is a live look this morning
6:19 am
at the east ridge transit center in east san jose. today's announcement should be a huge step in the plan to connect the light rail line directly to b.a.r.t. service. construction is expected to start next fall. when work is completed, riders will be able to board light rail at the east ridge station and connect the b.a.r.t. trains at the milpitas station. trending this morning, an unusual filmgoer hoofing it into the theatre, huffing and puffing, going into the theatre, or maybe earlier. we don't know. >> take a look at this. this is security camera video from the theatre in alaska. can you imagine if that thing walked in, a big moose interested in the concession stand? more so that than seeing a movie. after about five minutes of just munching the popcorn, he turned around and left without incident. the general manager says the
6:20 am
moose came through a door left open because the weather had been so nice. maybe that's the last time they do that. >> it's not if you give a moose popcorn, it's if you give him a mouth of cookies. >> that's a cute one. so this morning it's quiet around the bay area, and we had a great weekend. we've had some nice weather, too. here is a live look outside in san francisco, as you're getting ready to head out. it is clear, sunny, but also cool to start. let's go up to santa rosa where it's 43 degrees right now. the wind is calm and our temperatures will warm up as we go into the next few hours, with all clear skies throughout the. we're going from 43 now to 72 at 1:00 and it's going to heat up. it will be a cool evening at oracle park. we've got a home game and it's going from upper 50s to low 50s and still pretty gusty at oracle
6:21 am
park. a heads-up, if you're going to the game this evening, that's after reaching 62 degrees in the city. you head across the bay, it's going to reach 68 degrees and 75 in martinez. we're seeing 60s and 70s today, which will be the coolest day of the week. you've probably seen the forecast at the bottom of the screen. it's really going to start to heat up. by tomorrow, we're seeing low 80s in the inland east bay and concord reaching 82 degrees. 86 in fairfield. check out wednesday. 87 degrees there. 87, also, in san jose. and some mid-80s for much of the north bay. so we're really going to be heating up. we get a bit of a taste of summer for the next few days. the weekend, we'll have a cooldown coming in and the storm track staying to our north, but we'll have changes in our temperatures over the next few days. take a look at brentwood. we're going from upper 70s today to mid-80s tomorrow. are you ready for this?
6:22 am
91 on thursday. yeah, we're going to get some 90s in spots. and then it does come down after that a few degrees. but we're getting ready for the heat to hit us over the next few days, and of course we're closely watching the sierra snowmelt as well. mike, you're seeing a backup starting to build? >> yeah, over here, the bay bridge, no surprise. we have a backup at the toll plaza, it happened a little more gradually. some folks are held up coming through vacaville where traffic is jammed up. having trouble clearing up the crash. richmond bridge, bay bridge and highway 4 showing a traditional pattern you would expect at 6:22 on a monday. we're looking at slow southbound out of hayward and toward sunol as you head to the south bay, no surprises. back to you. >> thanks, mike. it is 6:22. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds.
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
nbc bay area responds to an east bay man who was hung up with a phone issue. >> he asked consumer investigator chris chmura's team to dial up the pressure. >> good monday morning. norman in brentwood told us he traded in his old iphone 11 for
6:26 am
a new iphone 14 with verizon last year. he showed us a screen grab of a chat he had confirming he would get $800 in credit broken up over his monthly bills. norman shipped the phone to verizon and shared with us delivery confirmation from the cargo company. norman contacted us because he said the billing credits came up $155 short. he says he contacted verizon and waited. went to a verizon store and waited. with no movement, he asked us to call verizon. we did. norman said verizon gave him seven additional credits of $22.22, a grand total of $155.54. he's now happy. we asked verizon for a statement but didn't hear back. cell phone issues are one of if not the most common complaint we hear from viewers like you. we recommend you keep documentation at every step when you sign up, change your plan, upgrade, switch carriers. kudos to norman. his paperwork helped make his
6:27 am
case a compelling candidate to take on. norman contacted us online. you can, too. scan the qr code on your screen to fill out our consumer complaint form online. >> thanks, chris. it is a busy monday morning on "today in the bay." ahead at 6:30, we are following breaking news out of san francisco. >> reporter: that's correct. one person is dead, as many as four others shot during a shooting here late last night. we'll have the latest details on the investigation. >> also, new short-term rental regulations may soon be coming to wine country. the new crackdown leaders in one county are now considering. stick with us. we've got a lot to tell you about this morning. st three minutes awajuy.
6:28 am
6:29 am
6:30 am
breaking now at 6:30, deadly violence in san francisco, where at least five people are shot in popular north beach. new information from one witness about what was heard as the gunfire erupted. >> an unusually deadly weekend on bay area highways. what investigators are saying about the string of wrong-way crashes in several counties. >> oakland teachers one step closer to walking off the job. an update on negotiations and what this could mean for students weeks before the end of the school year.
6:31 am
this is "today in the bay." a very good monday morning to you. 6:30 right now. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get you caught up on what you can expect this morning weather-wise. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect. beautiful start to the morning. >> yeah, it's nice and clear. we've had a great weekend. the weather we had yesterday continues today. so we're going to take advantage and make some extra time to get outside. here is a live look in walnut creek where the temperature is 51 degrees. it's still pretty breezy. as we go into today, we go from low 50s to low 70s at 1:00, eventually making it into the mid 70s there. san jose reaching 73 degrees, still nice and comfortable. we're going to get a taste of summer in a few days. i'm going to talk more about that in just a few minutes. also, a look at what to expect as we can see those highs well above average.
6:32 am
>> thanks, kari. breaking news overnight in san francisco, one person is dead, at least four others believed to be injured. this is after a shooting in the popular area of north beach. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live at the scene this morning. this is one of the city's busiest tourist destinations. what are police telling you? >> reporter: well, sfpd tells us that possibly as many as five people were shot last night. this happened around 11:00 last night behind me here, along columbus at the intersection with grant, just on the edge of little italy. we know one person died on the sidewalk in front of the liquor store, and we also know a woman was shot by the condor nightclub. we don't know her condition or the condition of the other people who also might have been shot. video shows a handgun in the middle of the street which police collected as evidence. a man visiting san francisco from the uk says he heard about 10 to 12 gunshots. >> i looked out the window,
6:33 am
there was a guy being dragged in the street by a car. the car drove off, the guy got dragged back over to the convenience store, so he's dead. and a girl ran down here, got shot as well, yeah. >> reporter: it's not clear if police have identified any suspects or made any arrests. we have reached out to pd. still waiting to hear back. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. new, when this story first happened, we did send out an alert right away on our free nbc bay area news app. if you don't have it, now is the time to download it because you're going to get updates on this story and much more sent straight to your phone. we are following breaking news in minnesota where a former police officer convicted of killing a man during a 2020 traffic stop has just been released from prison. kim potter received a two-year sentence for that shooting and killing of 20-year-old daunte
6:34 am
wright, after she says she mistook her gun for a taser. potter will serve the remainder of her sentence on supervised release in wisconsin. the chp this morning investigating an unusually deadly and dangerous weekend on bay area roadways after a string of wrong-way crashes. four people died, five others were injured in five wrong-way crashes, stretching between san rafael and sunnyvale, all in about 36 hours. a wrong-way head-on crash on 237 yesterday morning left two men dead in sunnyvale. about 12 hours later, chp officers responded to reports of another wrong-way driver on that same highway. that driver was having a medical emergency and was taken to a local hospital. in oakland yesterday morning, a wrong-way driver on westbound 580 near seminary avenue struck an oakland tree maintenance truck. both drivers survived. the chp says the wrong-way driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. now, all of that follows a crash on southbound 280 near woodside
6:35 am
saturday. chp officers arrested the driver of a white sedan, a campbell woman whom they say struck the driver of a bmw. >> the driver of the bmw died at the scene. >> the victim has been identified as 54-year-old eden palmer of san francisco. her 14-year-old son suffered major injuries. the chp says the suspect may have been driving under the influence of drugs. and developing for you now, oakland teachers are getting closer to another possible strike. it comes in the wake of what teachers call stalled contract talks. but the district says it remains confident that it can reach a deal with the union. teachers are threatening to walk off the job as soon as next monday. now, at least two days of negotiations already scheduled for this week. happening today, leaders will consider a new crackdown on short-term rentals like airbnbs. two proposals are on the table.
6:36 am
one would put more operating standards in place, including limiting guests to 12 and establishing stricter parking rules. the other would place caps on certain neighborhoods to prevent over-saturation of rentals. it comes with the vacation rental moratorium set to expire on may 9th. neighborhood caps will be re-examined later this summer. warrior fans prefer the veteran savvy over the youthful experience, and we thank you very much for that. but for a brief moment those veteran warriors almost let a critical game slip away. yesterday at chase center, dub nation had to sweat out game four against the kings. the buzzer-beating three-pointer by klay thompson put the warriors up by 10 but the kings battled back. steph curry called a time-out. the warriors did not have a time-out. that gave the kings a free throw and the ball. at the final buzzer, harrison barnes misses a game winner and the dubs hold on for that win,
6:37 am
126-125. a win is a win in my book. the kings and the dubs now tied at 2-2, with game five wednesday night in sacramento. >> oh, man. we'll keep tabs on that. let's take a live look outside in the north bay, san rafael. we'll check in with mike in just a moment to see how traffic is moving. we'll see how its across the bay area. let's check the temperatures across the bay area. kari, by later this week we'll see a warm-up. >> that's what we're all going to be talking about. we're getting ready for a big heatup over the next few days. it's breezy and mild today, but the warming trend really begins tomorrow. and then by the middle of the week we'll see temperatures for the bay reaching the 70s and low 80s. but inland it could be near 90 degrees. take a look at today's high temperatures reaching 69 in dublin, 64 in san mateo, and 71 in novato. tomorrow we see those temperatures jumping up another 7 or 8 degrees, and reaching 80
6:38 am
in livermore and san jose, and santa rosa 81 degrees. check out wednesday. this is when we'll have to turn on the air-conditioning, especially in the interior valleys, reaching into the upper 80s in spots like san jose, concord, 87 in fairfield. san francisco will be in the mid-70s. so we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, now you have an alert for north bay commuters. >> that's right. laura just showed you san rafael and that part is fine. this continues to be an issue, a backup through vacaville, there's a crash, a couple of crashes, and one might involve a motorcycle. another might involve maybe the cones they have to clear up after they had laid them out for other issues. there's a lot of slowing for west 80. that's holding folks up north of the carquinez and benicia bridges. once the crashes clear, there may be a good burst of traffic. we're looking at a smooth flow
6:39 am
of traffic around the rest of the bay. we will call this out, not typical, the slowing you will see today much like last week for a couple of days, northbound 17 we have, again, a lane closure where they're fixing the roadway. they've cleared the trees on the shoulders and sides and they're repairing north 17. you'll lose one lane. a lot of slowing. back to you. >> thanks, mike. one bay area county going autonomous. the new shuttle service about to hit the road with no driver behind the wheel. >> u.s. special forces over the weekend evacuated american workers at the embassy at khartoum. we'll take a look at that. let's take you out to the big board. that is not much movement at all. >> a stunning show in the sky. this is for many in parts of the country where you can actually catch the northern lights and it may even include right here in thgolden state. e

16,000 americans still in sudan. >> a surprising number. that was the count before the warning to evacuate. we can only hope that they are listening to that warning. >> get out, because the american government says, look, we're not coming back to get you. >> it's almost as if we taught some bad lessons. like a hurricane evacuation sort of thing, we'll come rescue you. the american government is being clear, you seriously have to leave and we're not coming to get you. we'll help you leave now and expedite that, but there aren't helicopters coming for you. >> hopefully people will heed the warning. >> thanks, scott. 6:44 right now. happening today, public transit in one east bay neighborhood is going driverless. transit leaders launching contra costa county's first autonomous shuttle service in san ramon. it will also provide employees, visitors, as well as residents of bishop ranch with transportation to the san ramon
