today is monday, april 24th, 2023. fleeing sudan. special forces daring mission pulling americans out of an active war zone what we're learning about the risky operation as that country slips deeper into chaos. ready to run. president biden expected to announce his bid for re-election as early as tomorrow. what our new nbc news poll reveals about a potential trump biden rematch. fox news parting ways with tucker carlson while cnn announces don lemon is gone. the reaction now pouring in about the onair shakeups rocking the media industry. fire it up. a change disney is making after a dragon at one of its shows burst into flames. good to have you with us. we begin in sudan where it's a race for american citizens and others to get out as violence escalates in the northeast

african country. on saturday the u.s. launched a military operation to evacuate americans at the embassy in the capital. the state department has temporarily suspended operations there. >> more than a dozen countries have rushed to get their citizens out, too, including france, that's the video you see here. that's after several attempted cease-fires failed. this centers around two rival military forces fighting for control of the country. meagan fitzgerald has the latest for us. we just got an update on the evacuation efforts. what are we learning? >> reporter: that information is just coming in. in fact, i want to read for you a little bit of what we're learning here. the d.o.d. is planning. >> looking for ways to evacuate americans who want out. and we're hearing from the white house they're facilitating the departure of u.s. citizens but they don't have troops on the

ground. as we've been reporting this is a fluid situation but also a volatile situation that is rapidly deteriorating inside sudan. we know there are 16,000 u.s. citizens trapped in the cross fire told to hunker down and stay inside their homes but it's a deteriorating situation. people are running out of food, they don't have access to medication. there's limited amounts of water. as people are leaving their homes, there's looting, robberies taking place, carjackings. we are learning that they are beginning the process to get americans out of sudan. >> there are two rival military forces here. how did it escalate to? >> reporter: that's right. we're talking about two generals the one is the general of the sudanese armed forces the other
12:04 pm
is the paramilitary. these two were allies. 2019, just a couple years ago they worked together to overthrow the then president dictator, fast forward to now we have seen escalating tensions just bubbling over which is what triggered this violence because the sudanese armed forces is trying to incorporate the paramilitary into their forces and that's where we have the conflict here that continues to spiral. there are multiple attempts at a cease-fire that have not been adhered to and the violence just continues. at this hour there's no signs that either side is willing to compromise to stop the violence. >> thank you. anticipation is building towards the launch of president biden's re-election campaign. which could happen as early as tomorrow. so three sources tell nbc news the announcement might come in the form of a video message posted online. tomorrow's date does have some

significance for the president it's the anniversary of biden's 2020 campaign announcement. let's bring in nbc news correspondent ali rafa. good to see you. we just heard from the president about his re-election, what did he say? what do the numbers tell us about how the voters feel about him possibly running again? >> reporter: we just heard from the president as he wrapped up his comments giving the 2023 teacher of the year awards. he responded to a shouted question about 2024 plans and he said, quote, i told you, i'm planning on running and you'll know real soon. our sources say that, quote, soon could be as soon as tomorrow when we expect the president to launch his campaign in the form of a really low key video announcement, similar to what he did in 2019 but these new nbc poll numbers are not ideal for an incumbent running
12:06 pm
again in 2024. they not only show a low approval rating for the president but also how much voters are concerned about his age. the president is the oldest serving president in history at the end of the second term if he wins again he'd be 86 years old. this is an argument that the white house is used to countering. they did it throughout his 2020 campaign, they've done it throughout the first half of his first term of president and argue his age is an asset. he brings to the table a lot of wisdom and experience and that only helps him in his job as president. so expect to hear more of the same with the argument as we head into 2024. >> right now the same polling we're referencing it's showing former president trump in the lead for the republican nomination but there's a lot going on here. he has several state and federal investigations he's dealing with p. two questions, have those investigations, the indictment we saw happen in new york, any impact on trump's support and
12:07 pm
how do people feel about the rematch of president biden versus president trump again? >> reporter: it looks like people are not too excited that this looks like a rematch between a former president and the current one. as far as what the legal perils have done for the president they've only really strengthened his standings in the polls. near 70% of the republicans say they believe he should stand by president trump through these legal woes because they believe they're politically motivated and unfair and that's compared to 26% of republicans who say they need to find someone else to lead their party in the general election against president biden and that's going to be something that's interesting to watch as we see the field of gop primary candidates take shape and we see how their strategies differ in how they're encountering the former president.
12:08 pm
>> let's talk about a specific issue, abortion what's our poll tell us about that and how it's going to factor in here? >> reporter: that's right. so this was an issue that really came to the center of the midterms when we saw the overturning of roe v. wade last summer. that drove so many voters to the polls, motivated by that decision. we are seeing much of the same in this poll, this continues to be a flash point in american politics and we expect more of the same as we continue into 2024. >> already kicking off in early 2023. thank you so much. breaking media news today. fox news abruptly announced it is parting ways with tucker carlson after he spent 14 years with the network. carlson hosted one of the most watched programs in all of television but also at the center of many controversies including conspiracies about the 2020 election, about voting machines just cost the company

$787 million in a settlement with dominion voting systems. let's bring in jane tim. this announcement was a shock. tell us what we're learning today and how big of a blow this is for fox news. >> yeah. the announcement appears to have been a surprise. no statement from tucker carlson indicating anything to the contrary. this came as a surprise to a lot of people, perhaps including him. what we do know is that tucker carlson was a ratings giant for fox news. drawing more than 3 million viewers, often the most watched show in america during some weeks. this is a big blow to fox news, and definitely to their ratings numbers until they replace him. what we do know is there's a lot of controversy, a lot of back and forth and a big settlement. we learned a lot about tucker

term behind bars. that's what officials say is typical in the state of minnesota the rest is under supervised release. she must stay in contact with officials. she can be drug and alcohol tested. she cannot own a gun. obviously she was convicted of manslaughter tied to the fact she shot and killed dante wright thinking she was pulling her tazer. those are the conditions she has the potential to be tested and this is going to go on for eight months. that is what the supervised release portion of this is. it is standard in the state of minnesota. now families and prosecuors wanted a greater sentence than what was handed down. she was sentenced to two years behind bars however prosecutors were asking for something in line with 7 years behind bars so obviously this is far earlier than the family would have wanted. >> at the time of the sentencing

after deadlocked jury led to a mistrial. masterson denied all the charges. why would the prosecution push this two trial again? what would be different? >> the prosecution has to consider the cost of the state and the value in prosecuting a case that could be an acquittal or hung jury. if the first one is a hung jury you can assume the jury is having difficult with the facts. so it's always a business decision for the da. is it the value to a possible conviction worth the risk of possibly another acquittal or a hung jury. for whatever reason balancing it out led to them prosecuting this case again. >> if you're the defense here, do you change things up at all or approach it the same way they did the first time. >> the defense needs to do the

not an order. they want to have people prepared as they clean this up if anything goes wrong that people are ready to mobilize. >> do we know how the barrels were allowed to stay there for so many years? >> reporter: that's part of the epa investigation. they say they were going to work to hold somebody accountable for all of this, and as i mentioned, they got tipped off to this because a fire started at this site and other reports i have seen, apparently there was a cut in the fence at the site. so who knows if someone has been dumping material at this site for years. so there's going to be a lengthy investigation to find out how all of this went unnoticed. we know the site was purchased by a new buyer and they're cooperating with the epa. so a lot of moving parts to this. >> how long could it take for the epa to remove everything? >> reporter: step one obviously getting on site and beginning their assessment. the epa is estimating several weeks but of course they want to amend that depending on what

to the pill but it's a ruling 7-2 with alito and thomas dissenting. that said our latest nbc news polling, this is important to remember, shows that nearly 6 in 10 adults, 58% of americans say abortion should be legal either always or most of the time. that won't impact the court's ruling but it shows you the different ways this is going to impact life in america and it also shows you that americans' views on abortion remain the same even before roe v. wade was overturned. so a lot of people are looking at the court for this. but still very complex what this means because we never had a case where you have an fda approved drug getting pulled off the shelves because of a court ruling. so definitely something we're going to watch. >> especially when it's been on the shelf 23 years now. thank you so much. our financial expert, sharon epperson, offers her two cents

in today's modern parenting money can be a tough subject of conversation. especially for parents who want to start teaching their kids about money. >> some states require high school students to take personal finance classes. some experts say it's important to start conversations much earlier than high school. joining us is sharon epperson. great to see you. >> great to be here. >> how young should parents talk to kids about money and how do you start that conversation? >> i think you can start talking to kids about money as soon as you start talking to your kids. this is something that should be part of a regular, everyday conversation. and it can start by just talking about basic concepts. how do you use money? how do you save money? how do you make sure that your money can grow and make money for you? maybe an easy way to look at it is choose a money word, like earn, save, spend, and use it in
