mascot, steeped in controversial history. the reason they say it's time for a makeover. >> and is mother nature trying to fast forward to a bay area summer? here is a live look at the city. meteorologist kari hall is going to track how long the summer-like conditions will last. this is "today in the bay." a good wednesday morning to you. thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll get a look at weather and traffic in a moment. first, did you feel it, a 3.2 earthquake hitting just south of san jose? it happened a little after 12:30 this morning. so far, no reports of any damage or injuries. >> many of the users on twitter saying that they definitely felt it. some even saying that it woke them up this morning. according to the usgs, people could feel it as far away as fremont. we do have you covered online with our bay area quake central web page. you can actually get what's going on, get a track of what's

going on with quakes, and we have a step-by-step guide on how to prepare for the big one. you can head to nbcbayarea.com/quake to read more. we want to head to meteorologist kari hall, because something a lot of people are talking about is just those warmer temperatures we're feeling. it felt good yesterday. >> yeah, it was so nice yesterday afternoon. it did warm up during the afternoon. then we're going to have slightly warmer temperatures compared to yesterday for today. as we take a live look outside in dublin, you're heading out to 50 degrees. nice, cool start. then as we go into the rest of the day, the temperatures start to ramp up, headed for low 70s at 11:00, eventually reaching 84 degrees in dublin, 84 in santa rosa, san francisco up to 71 today, and 86 in san jose. we'll get a look ahead to hotter temperatures, but mike is taking us to the south bay. we do have a crash that happened about 3:15 this morning right here in the middle of our screen. most of the south bay freeways are moving smoothly because very light traffic, but we did see

slowing until a couple minutes ago southbound 880, approaching the alameda off ramp. there's slowing register in alameda itself and there may be crews in the area. there's a crash, a medium-sized rig, a fairly large vehicle involved. lots of flashing lights but no major injuries just south of the airport. the rest of the bay moves smoothly, but we did hear about a possible crash on highway 24. i'll bring that up when i have more information. the scramble to solve oakland's crime, a woman robbed and shot in front of a school. >> as "today in the bay"'s terry mcsweeney reports, a lot of residents are crying out for protection. >> reporter: the attack happened on the 1900 block of park boulevard, a woman attacked by two men. they go for her purse but she would not let go. they finally wrestle it away and run, but she runs after them. that's when one man pulls a gun and shoots her. >> she was fighting back really

well for herself and then they took out the gun and shot her. so it was something really crazy. >> reporter: she says her husband sprang into action. >> we just ran over there to see what was going on. left the store open. he ran there and he called 911. he covered her gunshot wound, making sure that she was okay until the ambulance came. >> she was talking, she was alive, she said she didn't want to die. she was really scared. >> reporter: nbc bay area's sky ranger was overhead minutes later. the shooting victim is expected to survive. melvin noble lives nearby and says crime is getting worse in this neighborhood. >> i'm scared to walk around. i was trying to mail a letter. it's kind of scary even in the daytime. you expect something like this to go on at night. i'm sure the police are doing the best they can, but we know they're outnumbered. >> three times in a month our

business was broken into and that's unacceptable. >> reporter: the oakland police department couldn't agree more. they know they're understaffed, hundreds of officers short. what they would like to see is federal charges for these criminals. >> the only way we're going to break the cycle is if we have consequences for harming our community and doing something to remove the firearms from the streets. it's a continued challenge. we've been here before. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney, "today in the bay." >> police are still searching for the person who shot a 15-month-old girl, shot monday night while riding in her family's car. police say the little girl, her 5-year-old sister and mom and dad were driving home from a nearby laundromat when someone started shooting. they didn't realize the 15-month-old had been shot until they got home and rushed her to a nearby fire station, pounding on the door. it most likely saved her life. >> we have received from the doctor and family that the child is in stable condition, thankfully. again, that's in large part because of their quick actions

that were done by our personnel here at station 4. >> police say surveillance video showed a man on the corner shooting at another moving vehicle. detectives think the toddler was caught in crossfire. >> another delay in the case for the man accused of killing bob lee. momeni says he will plead not guilty. prosecutors say they got into some type of argument in the overnight hours of april 4th. momeni allegedly drove lee to a secluded area near the bay bridge and stabbed him with a kitchen knife. district attorney brooke jenkins says her office was ready for the hearing. >> mr. lee's children were in court today and imagine having to repeatedly come back to court to have nothing happen. >> momeni's attorney asked for a delay because she says that she has not received all of the evidence she requested from the d.a.'s office, including the full autopsy of bob lee.

in an exclusive one-on-one interview, she says she faces an uphill battle in this case. >> any time somebody is charged with a crime as serious as murder, even though i shouldn't have any obligation to prove anything, yes, of course it's an uphill battle. he's in jail. >> canny goes on to say that momeni doesn't pose a danger to the public and will ask that he be released on bail. the arraignment is rescheduled for next tuesday. a follow-up this morning, san mateo county supervisors have approved stronger protections for undocumented residents. county leaders voted to restrict cooperation with i.c.e. among law enforcement and other county employees yesterday, that includes reducing i.c.e. access to county facilities and sharing information about suspects in custody in most cases. the ordinance takes effect at the end of the month. it could be the end of the line for concord high school's minutemen mascot. outrage over the rifle-toting

american revolution mascot has been mounting with many for many years, calling to -- calling it, excuse me, an outdated and out of step. "today in the bay"'s stephanie magallon explains the debate will be heated later tonight. >> reporter: it's a historical symbol dating back to the american revolution and it's concord high school's mascot, minutemen. >> minutemen have a proud history. they weren't just men, they were women, there were african americans. >> reporter: the fact that it's an armed man is a problem for others. >> some of the brutality and them being a malitia. >> reporter: concord high school has been trying to change their mascot for over a year, following a decision to replace human mascots for non-human. >> i graduated in the class of '91, but i also want to make sure that we have a mascot that represents everyone. >> reporter: last year they were closing in on the crocodiles. that never went through due to

transparency issues and a lack of student involvement. this year, there was a student survey. 500 out of more than 1,100 students participated and leading the polls are the bears. >> out of those that voted, only 190 voted for the bears. so i don't think the students are excited about it, either. >> they were never given an option to make adjustments, make changes to the mascot, to become more inclusive. >> reporter: these parents have been speaking out against the change for months. they believe the mascot measure adopted in 2021 gives schools the option to change their mascot, so the goal is to modify the image by eliminating the weapon and adding a woman to keep a symbol they believe shows their patriotism. >> c-o-n-c-o-r-d, what, you know, minutemen, all right, let's go. >> reporter: stephanie magallon, "today in the bay." >> everybody remembers their

over to oakland with a live look outside. a few clouds to start this morning, low 50s, and it's going to be a nice, cool, refreshing start before those temperatures heat up quickly. our morning is looking good. we'll talk about the afternoon and how hot it gets coming up in a few minutes. >> golden gate bridge under the blanket of fog here. low clouds. no problems, no surprises. smooth drive. just limited visibility. silvana has a look at the business world ahead. good morning. i'm silvana hanao from cnbc. wall street looked like an open mix after a down day yesterday where the dow fell the most in a month, after first republic bank's earnings report renewed fears about the overall banking sector instability. in focus today, boeing's quarterly earnings just released with a wider loss than expected, but boeing reaffirmed it's 737 max production plans and shares

are higher in the premarket trading. the international energy agency says global sales of electric cars surged by 55% last year to nearly one-fifth of the global vehicle market, with china leading the way. meanwhile, gm will stop producing the first mass market electric car, the chevy bolt car and the suv, at the end of this year. gm has switched to another platform for more profitable electric trucks. >> and warner bros. discovery but barbie at the front of their presentation with executives and stars dressed up in various shades of pink and the tune of barbie girl. the movie debuts july 21st and warner bros. plans to release 16 films this year and hopes to do more than 20 annually going forward. i am very excited for this barbie movie. >> i am, too. my son is not, but my daughters are. we're going to make mark us go

a very good now wednesday morning to you. halfway through our workweek. what a lovely live look outside this morning, overlooking san jose, illuminated. the days we've been having have been gorgeous. we love spring. don't leave us too soon, right? >> we're going to have summer for a few days and then we'll go back to more of an early spring, maybe late winter. we're going to have a lot of changes ahead. and today is starting out with temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. so we do still have our cool morning to start, and let's a good thing. even on these warmer days, we still have our cool mornings to open up the windows, let the house cool down, let those temperatures come down before it heats up. we may be able to make it without the air-conditioning today, but we've been talking about how our temperatures are going to be ramping up quickly today. in concord we'll reach 86

degrees, but the record today is 94. 2004 was a really hot year around this time, so livermore made it up to 93 on this date, but today we're going to see a high of 85 degrees. so in comparison to our record high temperatures, this is well below what we'll see for today. we'll get a little warmer tomorrow. you can probably see that at the bottom of the screen. as we reach into the mid-80s, maybe able to make it another day without air-conditioning, but probably not so much tomorrow, inland valleys reaching 91 in los gatos, 92 in fairfield, low 90s in the tri-valley and upper 80s for much of the north bay. friday is still pretty warm but we do see temperatures coming down just a few degrees. tonight at the giants home game it's going to be windy and mild temperatures at 65 degrees at first pitch. going into the evening, still pretty gusty as temperatures drop into the other 50s.

we talked about the ramp up and the visit of summer, but then we're going to see a cooldown coming in, and possibly some scattered showers by the middle of next week. take a look at the changes in our temperatures for palo alto. 80 today and then mid-80s tomorrow. but then by sunday, monday, we're only looking at 60s around the bay area. we'll once again be tracking rain chances toward the end of that forecast. mike, you've got a word of caution for some drivers. >> some unexpected, but there is fog at the golden gate bridge. it hasn't been there for a while. saw some slowing northbound and then a burst of traffic, another reason why the sensors in this area were slow across the span. there was a crew clearing from the area. should be getting ready to clear the southbound side as well. a little fog drifting around parts of the area north of novato and that may be an issue for 101. folks in the north bay are used to that. there is a crash and a possible

traffic break west 24, approaching highway 13. no injuries reported. >> thanks, mike. san francisco now looking into using drones to take on illegal sideshows. supervisor raphael is requesting that the city develop a new policy that would allow them to use unmanned shows. he says officers often have to decide whether to intervene on these street takeovers and possibly create more dangerous situations. instead, the drones would be used to identify and later impound some of the folks. currently they're limited to using drones for things like search and rescue. oakland teachers organizing a rally today after announcing plans for a possible strike. union leaders announced the vote authorizing a strike last night that may start as soon as next monday. more talks are planned in the coming days and the district is hopeful a new deal can be reached before then. teachers are locked in a contract dispute centering

around higher wages. >> our proposals are providing stability for our schools, by demanding ousd pay our entire bargaining unit a living wage. educators need enough money to be able to stay in oakland. we really do want to avoid a strike. we are asking them to come to the table and bargain in good faith. >> last month dozens of teachers walked off the job in a one-day strike, and the union claims negotiations have been going on for months without a breakthrough. for many high school graduates, college decision day is right around the corner. seniors are getting ready to make big choices about where they will attend school for the next four years. but how can you actually make sure that you're making the most of those four years? the "today" show is speaking with college grads who reflect on the good, the bad, and what they say they would have done differently knowing what they know now. >> my biggest college regret is
