>> yeah, they are better at monterey through the glass. through the glass. some neighborhoods might want to brace for the 90s. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking that, and also the countdown to the cool down. ahead in a live report, the impact now expected from the string of winter storms on our fire season. this is "today in the bay." thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. marcus washington has the morning off. i am here. i am kris sanchez. >> i am glad kris is here, and i am laura garcia. we are starting off with cloudy conditions, but this is quickly going to change. meteorologist, kari hall, leading our team coverage talking about the hot temperatures we are going to have. how hot are we talking? >> we are going to have a range of high temperatures, and if you are seeing fog and clouds now most likely it will stay in the 70s for you.

but if you are making your way inland and it's already clear, it will hit the 90s this afternoon. it's a spare the air day where the most unhealthy air quality will be in the interior east bay. we will see a hazy sky with a high amount of particulate matter in the air. our temperatures hotter than yesterday, but not expected to set a lot of records here. in concord, the high expected to reach 90. today's high, 94 degrees. it was really hot on this date in 2004. as we look at san francisco, the record was in 1921. we are expected to hit 77 degrees. we are going to talk more about what to expect coming up. now, let's turn to today in the bay's bob redell joining us in livermore, and that's one of the spots that will be hot today. >> reporter: good morning, kari. that bank sign, can you see it right there reading 54. we expect that temperature sign

to be reading 30 degrees hotter once the sun comes up here in the tri-valley. it's the first spare the air day of the year, and the bay area quality management issuing this because they are afraid the air will be too unhealthy because of the combination of the high temps, the smog and the pollution. fire season is upon us, but fortunately we could see below normal fires because of all the rain we had. a san josé state professor specializes in wildfire research. >> the good news is because of the snowpack we have still, and we will have throughout the early summer, that will keep things moist in the central sierra in the mid elevations across the sierra nevada. with that we wont expect large fires in july like we seen in the past drought years.

>> reporter: he says the recent analysis of the shrub-fueled moisture in the santa cruz mountains indicates the plants contain higher amounts of water, and cal fire is already working to reduce vegetation in the bay area that could one day dry out and turn into fuel for a wildfire. here's how cal fire is preparing for the fire season. in contra costa county the agency is creating 200 miles of roads for firefighters to reach hot to reach places if there's a wildfire. the app is a good resource to have on the go. you can get alerts and you can customize alerts in the neighborhood where you are or where you are going to be.

it's free. a suspect that killed a mother in a crash, he was driving a stolen suv and he slammed into another car in rodeo. the driver of that car, a mother and one of her 6-year-old twin sons died. white is facing murder charges. today could be a pivotal day in the case of a unhoused man accused of beating a former fire commissioner. the public defenders released two videos, one that shows the police commissioner, carmignani, approaching a unhoused person with bear spray. they say carmignani, the former commissioner, may be responsible for similar attacks against

unhoused people. >> eight separate acts of violence. these eight separate acts of violence were perpetrated against people who are homeless. >> carmignani's team, meanwhile, released video they say shows the confrontation, and they say the unhoused man grabbed a metal object from the trash before swinging it at carmignani. the court has asked carmignani to testify today and depending on what happens, the district attorney may consider dropping those charges. a first major move in the attempt to raise the debt limit, and that battle is just beginning. today in the bay's brie jackson is live in washington, and if nothing else, it's a big win for speaker of the house, kevin

mccarthy. >> this was somewhat of a legislative victory for house speaker kevin mccarthy, who is able to win gop holdouts to pass the bill. it includes efforts to raise the debt limit and cut spending. the measure faces an uphill battle in the senate. >> house speaker kevin mccarthy passing his first major test by a slim margin. securing just enough votes to press ahead with a bill that raises the debt limit by 1.$5 trillion. >> nobody in america believes there's not one place you can find where you have savings. >> the cuts includes rolling back unused covid funds and stopping president biden's student loan cancelation plan. >> we should pay our bills.

state legislation and then was punished by the state for doing so. the first reading of the first quarter gdp showed economic growth slowed during the first three months of the year, and inflation is to blame. gdp rose at 1.1% for the quarter. that's small. even worse, a key inflation, a key gauge of inflation showed high prices were still a problem. stagnant growth in inflationary times -- or inflation combined with stagnant growth, that's stagnation. you have to have high unemployment, too, and we don't. stagnation is dangerous because we don't know how to solve that. the first reading of the gdp is never right and they will do two more readings to figure it out, so we will see. today's numbers are not encouraging.

over. >> let's see if we can get london breed to comment on that? >> we have a fog machine in san francisco. >> yeah, it's mainly for the coastline, and san francisco will see the fog drifting by. i saw it moving across the bay, and the bay bridge, we can see it there moving across the city. we have an early afternoon game in san francisco. beautiful weather for that. at first pitch at oracle park, it's going to be 70 degrees. not as much of a wind as we have seen in the past couple of days. it will get breezy as the sunshine continues, and we will reach into the mid-70s there. it's going to be really hot for the inland areas. it just looks hot as we take a live look at the view in san josé. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. yeah, big changes ahead. this is the peak of the heat where we are talking about near record highs. it looks like we are within five

degrees of those records. it was really hot on this date in 2004, so today we are just about 90 when the record is 94 in concord. livermore we are up to 89 degrees, and the record was 95. you can see it's well above normal, and we could be close in san josé. if we hit 91 we will tie that record set in 2004. we will be seeing those temperatures around san josé, milpitas reaching 91 degrees and a light wind. for much of the east bay it's going to be dangerously hot for a few hours with antioch reaching 92 degrees, and 82 in oakland. we will see low 70s for half moon bay. much more comfortable there. palo alto will reach 86 degrees. 76 in downtown san francisco. 86 in santa rosa. 90 in ukiah. we will see drastic changes by the end of the weekend. a cold front comes in. we can see there will be spotty showers nearby, but we will also

have slight rain chances starting on tuesday. it's possible by thursday of next week we could see some widespread rain in the bay area. much cooler temperatures, and you can see the changing colors there. that blue indicates there could be snow for those upper elevations for the central and southern sierra. we have got a little bit of it all. we have summer and we have spring and then we take it back to winter next week. livermore goes from 90 today to a high of only 62 degrees on monday. don't put away those jackets and coats just yet. we are going to have summer weather for the next few days. our mornings start out nice and cool and that's the opportunity to open up the windows and let the house cool down. next week we will be back to mornings in the 40s and highs reaching into the 60s, and needing to dust off those umbrellas once again. i will keep you up-to-date on this as it changes day by day. mike, you are seeing fog at the golden gate bridge. >> you see the tops of the

even go to sleep at half-time. we have a look at last night's fan reaction and what is at stake for tomorrow night's game six. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> yeah, they have been good down to the wire. they are bringing it home, kari, but they will come home to heat. >> yeah, i think they are bringing that from sacramento. we are going to see temperatures ramp up quickly. if you have things to do outside, try to get it done early while temperatures are like this. we have low 50s for much of the bay area, and martinez, 59 degrees, and 56 in san josé. our high temperatures will head for the low 90s in the south bay, at least for the peninsula we are going to see temperatures in the mid-70s. the tri-valley, we will have hazy skies, unhealthy air and highs reaching in the upper 80s. for the east bay it's in the mid-80s, and also looking hazy. san francisco, upper 70s. the northbound will reach into the upper 80s there as well.

the weekend cools off. we will talk about events going on. that's coming up in a few minutes. not a good day to not have air-conditioning, and that's what is happening in san francisco as all these folks in red waking up without power, and it has been out for hours now. the areas in red is close to 7,000 customers in total. the map in full shows you which neighborhoods are feeling it the most. today in the bay's emma gosk is live. do we know what caused that outage. >> reporter: the cause of the power outage is still under investigation. we can see that power is slowly coming back to parts of the city. we are in russian hill, and you can see a traffic light behind me, it has been out all morning and throughout the night. cars are going through it. some of them don't know how fast they should be going through it, and we have seen a number of traffic lights and streetlights that have also been out.

power initially went out just after 9:00 last night, and in total there were almost 10,000 pg&e customers without power. crews have been working throughout the night to get power restored. as of now, just around 7,000 people are still without power. the outage area covers knob hill, north beach and the financial district according to pg&e's outage map. look at the video on twitter from last night before 10:00, you can see emergency crews were out in downtown san francisco shutting down at least two city blocks where power went out. pg&e tells us there's no estimated time for when power will be totally restored to the city, but they are slowly getting power restored customer by customer. reporting live in san francisco, emma gosk for "today in the bay." >> 7,000. so many people. thank you, emma. law enforcement in two cities are asking for help to

find young girls at risk. this 12-year-old was last seen at her middle school yesterday afternoon. she's about 4'7", 120 pounds and has braces. jasmine white of union city was last seen tuesday night. she's 5'0", 140 pounds and could be wearing black slippers. in both cases you should call police if you see them. and then one neighborhood trying to shine the light on a cloud of violence and vandalism. the cadillac winchester last night held a walk for safety with city leaders. they walked together. they say for years they have been calling for better lighting, more police patrol and a commitment from the city to invest in their city. >> we have a lot of violence in this area. when you walk, it's so dark at night. >> the vice mayor attended that

started a little after 9:00 last night. the cause is still under investigation. despite crews working through the night, there's still no timeline on when that power will be restored. this is the outage map showing the affected areas including tenderloin, north beach and the financial district. happening today a police chase suspect accused of killing a mother and son in a high-speed chase is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing. white was driving a stolen suv on march 23rd and during a chase he lost control and slammed into another car in rodeo. that driver of the car and one of her 6-year-old twin sons died. white is now facing murder charges. today may be a pivotal day in the case of a homeless man severely beating a former san francisco fire commissioner. two videos were released yesterday, one that they say shows the former commissioner,
