days this as tens of millions of people in the south get hit with a round of violent storm from historic flooding along the mighty mississippi to severe storms across the south, millions of americans waking up this morning to the worst of mother nature's wrath. along the mississippi river, melting snowpack fueling a days-long flood phenomenon homes submerged from wisconsin to iowa. several cities reaching major flood stage with water 6 feet above flood levels and rising. in dubuque, iowa, officials closed all 17 of the city's floodgates for the third time in half a century >> how crazy is that, to think about all of these -- >> it's very, you know, it's scary. it really is >> reporter: near davenport, utility companies are cutting off gas in flooded areas as a safety precaution. >> this is the first ever in the 40 years i've been down here that i ever heard of this being done >> this as severe storms pummel

the south, sending damaging hail and heavy winds across texas, georgia, and florida with gusts so strong, they uprooted this more than 30-year-old tree >> tons of branches. we've seen a couple of fence posts down huge hail out here >> reporter: and temporarily grounded flights at dallas are airports a catastrophic combination, leaving millions of americans helpless amid another bout of severe weather >> and some good news here along the mississippi, thankfully, in some areas, water has started to recede or there is some relief inside in la crosse, wisconsin, specifically, forecasters there say it's expected to crest today. and in northern minnesota, that's where officials say they are starting to see flood levels finally go down. once again, here in parts of illinois and iowa, a little bit farther south, forecasters reminding people this water could continue to rise into early next week. hoda >> maggie vespa for us there in davenport. maggie, thank you. >> that's something to see let's bring in al for a closer look at the storms and the forecast

it's written all over your map >> stretching from victoria, texas, to hattiesberg, mississippi, we're looking at thunderstorms developingfrom br, all the way to albany, georgia, the panhandle of and we have a risk of severe weather from brownsville, texas, all the way to albany, georgia, the panhandle of florida, and severe storms that could bring damaging hail and wind gusts 60 miles an hour and we can't rule out a tornado or two so today and tonight, this storm system moves across th southeast, bringing more drenching rain from nashville down to orlando. tomorrow, this next system drops out of the rockies and brings an enhanced risk of severe weather from dallas to waco. we're talking about severe storm cells that are likely to develop late in the day tomorrow and move eastward. and in fact, we've got the greatest threat, 2 inches or more of hail 2-inch hail or more, with tornadoes possible and look at this wide swath of 2-inch hail from san antonio to dallas, almost all the way down to laredo.

private texts and e-mails from carlson emerged during the lawsuit, including redacted messages about fox news executives "the wall street journal" reporting, according to people familiar with the matter, that one referred to a female executive by the c-word. fox has not commented on the reasons for the split. this morning, "the new york times" reporting that according to two people with knowledge of the discussions, that top fox executives learned of the contents of many of the private messages the day before the lawsuit was settled. "the times" reporting that, quote, highly offensive and crude remarks in the messages set off a, quote, crisis at the highest level of the company "the times" also reporting it has obtained a video of carlson discussing his, quote, post-menopausal fans and referring to a woman as yummy. carlson's future is uncertain, but he suggests he'll take his show somewhere else. >> where can you still find americans saying true things there aren't many places, but

sister station wlwt. he was 79 years old. his family said springer died peacefully at his home in chicago. he served as mayor back in '77, and he was a news anchor and then commentator before taking on the role as talk show host in the early 1990s. nearly 7,000 pg&e customers are still without power due to an outage that started a little after 10:00 last night. despite crews working through the night there's still no timeline on when the power will be restored. the outage map shows the affective areas. we want to take a look at the forecast. it's lucky in san francisco it will be cool because no a/c could be tough today. >> absolutely. especially in the inland valleys where temperatures are headed

we want to start this half hour with a "today" exclusive. it has been just over two weeks since the mass shooting at a bank in louisville a tragedy that left five people dead, eight others hurt, including a police officer who remains in critical condition. >> the gunman was also killed that day and this morning, his parents are coming forward, sitting down with us, in hopes that opening up about this nightmare may lead to real change >> if you had a chance to say something to the families, what would you want to say? >> we are so sorry we are heartbroken we wish we could undo it, but we know we can't. >> in an era of mass shootings all too frequently, theirs is a perspective we do not often hear lisa and todd sturgeon are the parents of the young man whonal opened fire nearly two weeks ago in louisville's old national bank

welcome back this morning on "today food, one of our favorites, matt abdu, chef and owner of pig beach in queens and west palm beach matt cooked some of the best barbecue around this morning, doing it for a very, very personal reason to honor his brother-in-law, jeff, who passed away five years ago. great to have you here let's talk about this weekend. it's a great event tell us about it >> so we -- the chef passed away five years, and we wanted to find a way to honor his legacy and his name and sort of just keep his heart and his kindness and his generosity and everything that embodied who he was in his spirit and put that into an event that captured that we have 30 of the country's best pigmasters coming this saturday, where we do a crazy barbecue, where it will be some of the best bites and barbecues that you've ever seen in your life. >> what do you think jeff would think about that >> he got a chance to work with all of them. that's why all of these guys are here to love and support >> and informs this was his sandwich the brisket sandwich >> when we first started pig beach, you know that brisket is one of the hardest things to do it right and jeff helped us perfect it. he put this sandwich on the menu, and as an ode to him, we kept it on the menu. it's at every single one of our

locations as that. we love cooking it up. it's one of our top-selling menus. >> you said it it's a hard piece of meat to get right at home. you don't even need to own a smoker >> you don't barbecuing and smoke is indicative of having a smoker. you can cook this beautiful piece of meat in your oven you don't have to worry about the temperature spiking or dipping. this is a very large brisket, a large piece of meat. these can range between 9 to 15 pounds this is probably around a 13-pound brisket but there's a lot of stuff on it that needs to get trimmed off. in your house you trim off and keep about a quarter inch of fat on top, and over on this side, there's a wedge of fat you want to take out. we do it really simple put on some yellow mustard >> this is cleaned up? >> this is not this needs to be trimmed it's yellow mustard to smear, helps create that bark and have that salt and pepper adhere to it, and equal parts salt and coarse black pepper. we season it very aggressively with that. it goes in the smoker or oven at

250 degrees. it will take 12 to 15 hours. what happens when it gets to an internal temperature of 155, it stalls, where we wrap it in butcher paper and put it back in >> we have that sandwich over there. >> unbelievable. >> it's insane >> love you guys love you guys. >> it's meat and butter. >> is it that delicious? >> adele is eating it as well. >> put them to work. >> so this -- you guys ready to get to work and make some pickles? in this bowl, this is what i need you to do you take this, you take this so here we have a couple different kinds of vinegars, sugar in the bowl, and some thinly sliced cucumbers, curvy cucumbers, english cucumbers, to that we add smashed up garlic gloves, a little bit of salt girls, you can put your vinegars in right now >> does this happen fast >> this is a quick pickle. this isn't a full sour that you might get at a fancy deli. take these, mix them up, crisp, acidic, almost like a cucumber salad. it is a great bite to put with the rich brisket
