5:00 am
this morning, a san francisco bank may go under. a live report from washington on the collapse of first republic and the possible deal in the works to save it from collapse. this is "today in the bay." quickly approaching 5:00 on your friday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington has the day off. we are going to take a look at the roadways, but first we want to start with a look at the forecast because yesterday was hot and we want to know if we're going to get more. we're going to get more heat today and tomorrow. let's take a look outside where it's been cool, because of the fog rolling over san francisco. it's going to keep the coastal areas much lower compared to what we're seeing inland and the warm temperatures continue into today as well as tomorrow. but then by sunday, those temperatures are going to be dropping. and we could have some wind and rain ahead in the forecast.
5:01 am
but we're still reaching into the upper 80s for the interior valleys today, and 60s for san francisco. mike, you were looking for some flashing lights. >> for a while it was tough because our camera in emeryville, you can see the clouds floating around. it was impeded from view. there's the berkeley curve, coming toward us there's a closure on the connecter from west 580 onto eastbound 80. there's some flashing lights. i think the crews should be moving in the next few minutes. you still see the sensors, causing a bog-down here. the maze, heading toward berkeley and university. that should be cleared in the next few. we'll see a traffic break likely over the next couple of minutes. patchy fog through the north bay and across the golden gate bridge. >> thank you. it's 5:01. developing, two separate shootings in oakland under investigation. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us from the newsroom. one of these incidents involved
5:02 am
a teenager. >> correct, last night at around 10:30 there was a shooting at foothill boulevard and brookdale avenue in the city of oakland. oakland police confirmed to our photographer on the scene that the two people who were shot drove themselves to the hospital, both in stable condition. an officer also confirmed that one of the victims is a teenage boy. we just heard from opd and they tell us there have been no arrests. we also asked about another crime scene in midvale if there was a report of another shooting, this one taking place at around 11:45. no details, however, both shootings are under investigation and no other details have been released. anyone with information is asked to call oak police. reporting live in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. happening today, the woman accused in the deadly shooting of pleasanton home depot security guard is set in court for a plea hearing. that guard, blake mohs, died outside the store on april 18th.
5:03 am
investigators believe he had just confronted the suspect about stolen items before she shot him. a second suspect now in custody, david guillory, accused of driving the getaway car. the accused hitman in an oakland murder-for-hire plot is scheduled to appear in court today for a disposition hearing. the shooting happened last aug in little saigon. he pleaded not guilty last november. investigators say the man who hired him took his own life after he was arrested. the family of a san francisco woman killed in a wrong-way crash is demanding justice. 54-year-old eden palmer died saturday afternoon on interstate 280 in woodside. one of her sons, 14 years old, also in the car, remains in critical condition. her other son, understandably, heartbroken, still trying to comprehend the tragic loss. he says he and his little brother have lost their best
5:04 am
friend. >> it's been very difficult, obviously not having my mom around, someone who has been a shining light in my life and so many other people's lives. >> authorities arrested 24-year-old constellatia martin near the scene. they say she ran from the crash into a nearby field. martin is being held without bail and is charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs. new overnight, at least ten people in ukraine are dead after what's being called the largest russian air strike in two months. one missile struck an apartment building in a town about 100 miles south of kyiv. there are still fears that people may be trapped, as rescue workers comb through the smoking rubble. ukraine does say 21 of the 23 missiles fired by russian forces were shot down. growing fears this morning of a spreading crisis in the financial sector with san francisco based bank sitting front and center. first republic has been on life support for days now, and now the federal government may be
5:05 am
ready to step in. >> "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is live in washington. what are you learning about those reported talks? >> reporter: good morning, kris and laura. well, reuters reports that u.s. officials are leading those talks as first republic bank appears to be in trouble. sources tell the news organization that the fdic, the treasury department, and the federal reserve are all involved in the conversations. the company appears to be in trouble, even after receiving $30 billion in deposits from 11 major other banks last month. now, first republic's shares have plunged 57% this week, after it revealed the extent of which customers pulled their deposits in the days after silicon valley bank failed. as we've been reporting, any first republic customers' funds are protected up to $250,000 per account, because of the fdic. but if you, like many companies, have more than that in a single
5:06 am
account, financial experts say this is an uncertain time. >> the main difference is that for silicon valley, the government stepped in front of the mics and said, no matter, you're safe. apparently this has not happened for first republic. so first republic is just as any company in difficulties, if you're invested in them as a depositor, you're just hoping for the best. >> reporter: all of the uncertainty comes as the federal reserve is expected to release a review of its supervision of silicon valley bank this morning. federal regulators seized the company last month after sv b's customers withdrew tens of billions of deposits in a matter of hours. meanwhile, it is unclear at this point whether the u.s. government is participating and encouraging a private sector rescue of first republic. just a note, the treasury department declined to comment
5:07 am
to reuters about the report. the federal reserve did not immediately respond to email requests sent after hours. for "today in the bay," i'm brie jackson. >> hard to see that happening right here at home. >> thank you very much. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. can you make it out? just trust me on this one. >> always. >> tracking that forecast for us, meteorologist kari hall. >> it's going to be a lot cooler in san francisco, and where we're seeing that fog. and yesterday it did get really hot. let's talk about where those hottest temperatures were, with concord hitting 90 degrees. it was 92 at stanford yesterday, and sjc hit a high temperature of 87, petaluma 86 and sfo got up to 82 degrees yesterday. we've come back down to the 50s and it's warmest right now in san jose, at 59 degrees. it's cooler in san martin at 50
5:08 am
degrees, 50 in san francisco and santa rosa, and we're headed for the upper 80s for our warmer spots inland today. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike gets you out the door with a look at lower gas prices. >> the contra costa county still favors hercules with their best price of $4.19 a gallon, the safeway on san pablo avenue. santa clara county, the low is up to $4.23. the arco on north capital avenue is our pick. in marin county we have another arco, mill valley, the low of $4.25. some of the best ranges we're seeing reported through you on gasbuddy.com. the roadways are moving well. we have crews getting ready to start their weekend. northbound 680 slowing, where the arrow is, and they're likely clearing with the full overnight closure north of 84. if you're leaving the house now, it should be okay in the next few minutes. same thing at the berkeley curve, west 580, eastbound 80,
5:09 am
the closure should clear. it will happen again overnight tonight. >> thank you, mike. new signs of life for downtown san francisco. coming up, despite the mass exodus of tech companies, a business is officially opening up its doors. we'll show you the drive for the company to make that move. >> incredible moments caught on camera. ahead, a look at the moment a seventh grader sprang into action after his bus driver fell unconscious. >> stay with us. >> stay with us. yo - life is uncertain.

happy friday to you. it's time to get up and out the door and get this friday started. in the east bay, we're taking a live look at emeryville. a little fog drifting around in parts of the coastal areas and the bay and it's going to warm up nicely for some of our areas near the water. inland it's going to be heating up. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. we're also in the east bay looking at fremont. the nimitz southbound with the headlights toward the south bay. we do have another issue coming into fremont, there may be some slowing after a crash reported. i'll gather the details and show you speeds in the area as well. >> first, let's check in with bertha. good morning. good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. it's the final trading day of april. at the moment, the futures are
5:13 am
pointing to a slightly open start. we've gotten results from energy giants exxon mobil and chevron, both better than expected despite the fact we've seen lower oil prices during the quarter. right now we are waiting for inflation data and the key read on consumer spending. meantime, shares of snap down nearly 20% this morning after the social media platform reported revenues. that came in below expectations. it's really been a tough online ad market in social media. for snap, user growth was slower than expected. meantime, amazon reporting a big revenue beat, driven by growth beyond its e-commerce site in its online ad platform and cloud computing unit aws. investors liked that, but then they sent the stock lower. executives delivered what you might call a cloudy forecast for aws, as the company holds back
5:14 am
on spending amid economic uncertainty. amazon itself has been cutting costs. it's cutting another 27,000 jobs on top of 76,000 layoffs it's completed over the last year in recent months. it's been a tough time in silicon valley. >> it sure has. >> out west in general with all of the tech firms announcing layoffs. >> yeah, constantly. we've had meta, lyft this week. just tons. in fact, we've dedicated on our website an area of all the layoffs we're hearing. hopefully people can find something else rather quickly. >> thank you, bertha. new this morning, as more businesses flee san francisco, as we were just talking about, one global technology company is bucking the trend, setting up new offices in the city by the bay. the german-based sap just opened new offices yesterday. it covers three floors and 30,000 square feet of a building on townsend street, and it
5:15 am
features rooftop space. while sap workers are not yet required to be back in the office, one spokesman says many workers are enthused about collaborating face-to-face again. >> employees are wanting to meet each other and to have facetime, and every time that we talk to them they tell us as to how energizing it was to come together and meet people and bump into people, and those spontaneous interactions just don't happen. so for us, it was more about how do we get that in a space where we want to be, rather than forcing people to be there. >> the new sap offices in san francisco can accommodate up to 500 employees, which is about 15% of sap's bay area workforce. the nfl draft off to a flying start. last night the carolina panthers selected alabama quarterback bryce young as the first pick. the 49ers don't have much to talk about, in part due to the
5:16 am
trade that netted them christian mccaffrey. barring another trade, the 9ers won't pick again until tonight's third round where they get to make three selections. trending this morning, a seventh grader springs into action to save his fellow students. this is amazing. >> unbelievable. the bus driver fell unconscious and began swerving the bus and that's when the boy stepped in. >> it makes my heart skip a beat. i'm extremely proud of him. >> a little hero. >> it happened in michigan. you see the bus driver as he lost consciousness. the bus weaves into oncoming traffic. he calmly grabs the wheel and brings the bus full of kids to a stop. his mom says he is very observant. that he knew what to do. >> and then he was so calm about it. and then tells the kids, okay, calm down. >> take your seats, please. >> exactly. >> i want him on my next field
5:17 am
trip. >> absolutely. >> amazing. all right, a lot of folks can't go watch the warriors in person because it's expensive, so some people might be watching outside. >> watching outside, maybe at thrive city. >> that's fun. and it's a friday night. >> it's a friday night. if you're going to visit a friend's house and watch it with everyone else, it's going to be a really nice evening. and we've had some better air quality today in the forecast, compared to yesterday, where we did have unhealthy air quality. it's still going to be marginal for parts of the east bay, but we're seeing slight improvements as the wind picks up this afternoon. let's go around the bay. we're starting out with a live look outside in san francisco where it's foggy. we head inland to santa clara, where it's going to be another hot day. temperatures reaching into the upper 80s. but comfortable in pacifica, thanks to the fog we're seeing,
5:18 am
low 60s there. and then it will be very warm again in vallejo, reaching 86 degrees. we talked about game six of round one later on tonight, it's going to be at about 64 degrees. very windy. you still need a jacket in the city. it's going to get even cooler as we go through the night, and also dipping down into the mid-50s. we'll see a wide range in temperatures here, because our high at half moon bay reaches 68 degrees, oakland will be 77 degrees, and 86 in dublin and still hitting 92 in fairfield. but then tomorrow we're starting to see even more of those temperatures coming down for parts of the inner bay, reaching 75 in hayward. i think that is just perfect. really comfortable weather. mountain view reaching 80 degrees. and some upper 80s for morgan hill and mid-80s for much of the tri-valley. but then by sunday, look at these high temperatures.
5:19 am
significantly cooler, with santa rosa reaching 73 degrees, and we'll see fremont reaching 66 degrees, san mateo 62. so the strong cold front comes through on sunday, but the possibility of rain enters the forecast on monday. and that will mainly be farther to the north where we start to see spotty showers coming through, and much colder temperatures will continue. scattered showers will be off and on throughout the bay area next week, possibly even some heavier rain by the end of next week. big changes ahead. and we are not done with the rain just yet, as we look at our long-range rainfall estimates, showing that in these areas in red in parts of the north bay, we could see an inch or two of rainfall next week, while the areas in yellow are showing about a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain, maybe less in some of the valleys. so we are still looking at hot weather for today and tomorrow, and then sunday it is going to be much cooler.
5:20 am
rain chances and temperatures in the 60s, as winter returns next week. mike, you're watching a crash. what's the update? >> overall things are moving smoothly, but there is a crash i'm concerned about that did pop up in fremont. the green sensors, we expect lighter volume of traffic on a friday, an easier build likely. slowing hasn't happened just yet. southbound 880, this crash is right around the exit there, and there may be an issue as far as injuries and perhaps a lot of damage going on. i'm still tracking that closely. so far, we don't see the slowing i expected to see heading toward the dumbarton bridge on southbound 880. we're looking at the entire rest of the tri-valley, a smooth flow of traffic. the earlier slowing we saw indicative of the traffic break cleared up a couple second ago. i do think they've reopened northbound 680 after the overnight road work. just some minor slowing at the altamont. clear by the time you pass by
5:21 am
north flynn road. the slowing sensors seem to have cleared up from westbound 580, the connecter was closed coming from this direction toward berkeley university. it will happen again tonight. they're doing road work there. no problem on the berkeley curve itself getting toward the bay bridge. flashing lights on the shoulder approaching the toll plaza. we'll track to make sure no gates are blocked or anything like that. there is fog there. you can still see as you drive. back to you. >> thank you. up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> our energy bills are up. we want to help you bring them back down. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura.
5:24 am

5:25 am
the former mayor of cincinnati. after that, he was a news anchor and commentator at the nbc station in that city. >> he definitely loved what he did. >> he was very passionate. >> he had a lot of friends, a lot of people that really respected him. may he rest in peace. our power and gas bills have been higher lately. >> we asked our consumer team to find ways to cut energy bills. consumer investigator chris chmura shows us how. unfortunately, the best way to cut our energy costs is to use less energy. but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to be uncomfortable. let's start with your thermostat. pg&e says each degree you lower your thermostat can save you 2%. drop it 5 degrees at night and you might save 10%. if you're able to, pg&e recommends 68 or lower. blankets to the rescue. when you leave your home, try to keep the warm air inside. close those curtains, shades and blinds.
5:26 am
then pg&e says set the thermostat to 56 while you're away. the department of energy recommends a look at your water heater. many are set to 140 degrees by default. consider 120 instead. if that's warm enough for showers and doing dishes, uncle sam says you might save 22%. pg&e says you can save roughly another 10% on your bills if your attic, walls, doors and windows are sealed nicely. caulk is cheap and it easily fills those gaps where warm air can escape or cool air weasels in. if you qualify as low income or receive government assistance, click this qr code. you might be eligible for saves of 20% to 35%. happening tomorrow, alameda county is ending its eviction moratorium. the policy was put in place in the beginning of the pandemic to temporarily stop evictions. it was an effort to protect
5:27 am
tenants at risk of becoming unhoused. property owners have been rally against the moratorium for months and are calling on the county to reimburse them for any loss of rental income. game six between the warriors and kings is back at the chase center tonight and tip-off time is much earlier than usual.
