people in ukraine are dead after what's being called the largest russian air strike in two months. one missile struck an apartment building in a town about 100 miles south of kyiv. there are still fears that people could be trapped as rescue workers comb through the rubble there. ukraine does say that 21 of those 23 missiles fired by russian forces were shot down. growing fears this morning of a spreading crisis in the financial sector, with san francisco-based bank sitting front and center. first republic has been on life support for days and the federal government may be ready to step in. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live in washington. what are you learning about these reported talks of coming in to rescue it? >> reporter: good morning. reuters reports that u.s. officials are leading those talks as first republic bank appears to be in trouble. the sources tell the news organization that the fdic, the treasury department, and the federal reserve are all involved in these conversations. the company appears to be in

trouble, even after receiving $30 billion in deposits from 11 major other banks last month. first republic shares have plunged 57% this week after it revealed the extent of which customers pulled their deposits in the days after silicon valley bank failed. as we've been reporting, any first republic customers' funds are protected up to $250,000 per account because of the fdic. but if you, like many companies, have more than that in a single account, financial experts say this is an uncertain time. >> the main difference is that for silicon valley the government stepped in front of the mic and said, no matter, you're safe. but apparently this has not happened for first republic, and so first republic is just as any company in difficulties, if you're invested in them as a depositor, you're just hoping for the best.
6:08 am
>> reporter: all of the uncertainty comes as the federal reserve is expected to release a review of its supervision of sbf silicon valley bank this morning. federal regulators seized the bank last month after deposits were withdrawn in a matter of hours. it's still unclear where the u.s. government is participating and encouraging a private sector rescue of first republic. now, just a note here, the treasury department has declined to comment to reuters about the report. the fdic and the federal reserve did not immediately respond to email requests sent hours after. back to you. >> we'll have to wait and see what happens there. thanks for the very latest. 6:08 now. let's take a live look out at the golden gate bridge. don't be deceived. the temperatures are still going to be warm in most places around the bay area. just not in san francisco right

evening. for some of our valleys, it's going to be another hot day, san jose reaching 87 degrees, 88 in livermore and low 80s for the north bay, san francisco in the upper 60s. tomorrow cooler, parts of the inner bay reaches into the mid-70s, oakland headed for 75. then on sunday, look at how much cooler it's going to be. only in the upper 60s and low 70s. so a significant change here as a cold front comes in. and then next week we're talking about rain chances in the forecast, a possibility of some spotty showers, first starting in the north bay and then some off and on rain throughout the week and only reaching into the 60s. we'll also see waves of rain and possibly some gusty winds as well. so our early estimates on how much rain we could see next week between monday through friday, there's a possibility that in parts of the north bay where you see the red, parts of coastal and northern sonoma county, lake

and mendocino counties, 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. that is very significant, especially for this time of year. and most of us are looking at about a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain, maybe a lot less in parts of the south bay. so for the weekend, we're going to take in the warmth and the sunshine, and then get a day that's about normal for sunday, with some 70s. then we'll take it to winter. so we have just about every season in this forecast over the next several days. and so far, mike, it seems like it's been quiet in your department. >> lets not disturb the folks waiting at the bay bridge toll plaza. all these lanes are filling in. the hov lanes are moving smoothly and we do see movement for folks waiting in the other lanes. that's a good indicator that the span is moving well. a smooth drive for 37, a little build there. highway 4 not bad. into pittsburg and bay point,

the cherry blossom festival will be happening this weekend. we'll start out at 64 degrees and then head for the upper 70s. so it's going to be very pleasant downtown. if you've been looking for an opportunity to drive down the coast and check out the views and also the super blooms, big sur is going to have temperatures in the low 70s today and tomorrow. but it will be definitely much cooler for the end of the weekend. if you have l.a. in your plans, it's going to be in the low 70s today and mid-70s tomorrow. but, also, a touch cooler for the end of the weekend. mike, still excited about the dubs tonight, and also tracking the commute. >> absolutely. i'm excited because friday is shaping up as we expect and as we predicted, a slower build but still moving westbound. a lot of folks will continue to move in here toward the city. so the commute will build. look at the game time, 5:00 p.m. thrive city will open up. the stadium will open a couple of hours before, so there will be a lot of folks coming through

we see a little fog drifting around the novato area and it's in the low 50s. a lot of sunshine in our forecast, and quickly warming temperatures throughout the morning into the afternoon. it's going to be another hot one inland and we'll take a look at much cooler temperatures in our forecast that's coming up. coming up right now, more slowing on the san mateo bridge. i think i can change this to give you a better view, but there's the backup. you can see it across the span. use the dumbarton bridge instead of the san mateo bridge. we'll talk about why and see the ripple it has on the east bay commute coming up. >> thanks so much. it is quickly approaching a quarter until 7:00. happening tomorrow, alameda county is ending its eviction moratorium. the policy was put in place at the beginning of the pandemic. the goal was to temporarily stop evictions, protecting tenants at the risk of becoming unhoused. landlords are calling on the county to reimburse them for any

loss of income. april is autism awareness and acceptance month. we're nearing the end of it. today we continue to shine the light on organizations trying to help families living in autism. in the past, parents would sometimes have to wait months, sometimes years, to get their children tested and diagnosed. but during the pandemic, some of those waits got longer because in-person assessments became unavailable. to remedy the problem, kayla wagner started as you are, which offers virtual evaluations, allowing parents to avoid lengthy waits and in-person office visits. >> it is unacceptable for children to be waiting for health care. we knew we had to do something. parents can meet with a clinician right in the comfort of their own home and they'll be asked questions, they'll be asked to play with their child, engage in play-based behaviors, and our team of highly trained physicians will help them understand if their child has autism and how to best meet

so you can register to become an organ donor at donatelifecalifornia.org. >> so the mom was telling me roan was about 4 years old, she lost her brother and they donated his organs. so as a young boy he was aware, so she said there's no question that's what he would want. >> when i spoke to chief berg's sister, wendy, who received roan's organs, she was telling me she was on the list for four months and was within a few weeks of dying. >> out of that darkness came so much light. really nice tribute they're going to have. thank you. we want to get a look at our forecast, because the weekend is upon us. >> come on, let's be excited. it's the weekend! >> i'm cautiously optimistic. >> we're going to have a little bit of everything. i'm going to make everybody happy here. if you want warm weather, like it was hot yesterday, you had a chance to enjoy the pool, take a look at how hot it was in some of the inland valleys, like

concord. in stanford it was 92 and sjc 87 degrees. this is well ahead of what we typically see, even though we didn't set any records across the bay area. our air quality was a little more unhealthy, but it is improving today. that gives you more of an opportunity to get outside and possibly some fresh breezes. for the inland east bay, it is borderline with upper 90s as they measure the particulate matter in the air. it's still going to be a bit hazy for today. but as you're heading out for a walk early this morning in foster city, we're starting out with some low 50s, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. you'll notice that temperatures will warm up more slowly, because much of the peninsula is going to be cooler compared to the heat we've been talking about for the inland valleys. so in spots like san mateo, it's 73. you head across the bay to oakland, it's 77. we'll reach up to 88 degrees in livermore. still low 90s for fairfield, but
6:52 am
we'll all start to feel just a few degrees cooler by tomorrow. we're still in the upper 80s for morgan hill and reaching 80 in napa. and in san francisco some mid-60s. by sunday it's only in the 60s and low 70s for a high, so there's going to be a significant drop in temperatures as this very strong cold front comes through. and next week it's going to be nothing like this week. we're talking about rain, cool temperatures, gusty winds, and off and on showers that will continue into the rest of the week, possibly more storms ahead going into the end of next week. so some early rainfall estimates on how much additional rainfall we could see, well, in some of these red areas and parts of the north bay we could see about 1 to 2 inches of rain next week. that is very significant for this time of year in early may, and we could also see some lighter amounts of rainfall, while much of the rest of the bay area gets about a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain. so that's just looking way ahead. right now, of course, we're just

focused on the weekend, enjoying a little taste of summer and going back to spring on sunday. san francisco will be in the upper 60s for today, but low 60s by sunday. mike, you're saying just avoid the san mateo bridge. >> this happened in the last 10 to 15 minutes. we've seen this stack-up. i removed the title bar. you know it's 92 westbound toward the peninsula, right around the high-rise. i saw flashing lights. there's a disabled big rig blocking one lane. the rig itself is in a lane. only two lanes get through. once a crew is there, they may have to block another lane. there's the backup all the way across 92, starting at 880. this is the time when it builds in the east bay, so more traffic will be flowing, but there's a fire on the side of the road that distracts folks as well, adding to the slowdown. happening now, about 500 pg&e customers in san francisco still don't have power. that's down from about 9,000

wednesday night. some have been told they won't have the lights on until tomorrow. pg&e says the cause of the outage is under investigation, but the fire department says it was likely linked to an underground vault fire. most of the outages are concentrated in the financial district. next, a quick look at our top stories, that incnclude a violent n night in t the easast. aheaead on "todaday in the b ba back-to-baback shootingsgs ovevt in oakland andnd new details emerging in those investigations. >> first, here is hoda. >> coming up on "today," much more on the life and legacy of jerry springer. we will remember his interesting and influential
