we are california dreaming saturday morning because it is high 70s, but the lakers moved in and sacramento has forced a game seven with golden state. all that ahead in a moment. we are covering several stories this morning. including the evacuation of hundreds of americans in sudan trying to escape the civil war still raging there. we will hear from a couple and harrowing experience. they successfully made it out. and this morning, we are keeping awe close eye on the weather with a lot of rain expected for millions in the northeast today. how long will it last? we will get the forecast from meteorologist angie lassman in a few minutes. we start with jesse kirsch in iowa where residents are watching the rising mississippi river. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kristen and peter. we have flooding here just beyond the mississippi in davenport. the train is still running along

the riverfront in downtown. yesterday, there was a street closed sign in the middle of the street which was covered by water partially. the waters continue to go up. now we have a road closed sign back here. further north in debuke, it was three feet above flood stage. this is part of the weather headaches across the country. overnight, severe storms slamming the south. confirmed weak tornado in miami. outside texas, baseball-sized hail. brothers recovering after their mother says they were hit by lightning. >> i died last night. >> reporter: their mother pleading to keep kids inside during thunderstorms. >> it is a 1 in a million chance. you never know. you might be that one. two for me. >> reporter: out west, most of california's yosemite national park will be shutdown until

wednesday because of flooding concerns. snow melt driving fears along the flooded mississippi river. army corps is closing dams. and the upper mississippi with concerns over consumer costs rising. >> if you have an interruption of service or lack of efficiency on the waterway system, it has a ripple effect throughout the broader economy. >> reporter: in davenport, iowa, the water is expected to keep rising until monday afternoon. here in downtown davenport, the store front and others, bracing for more water. some are piling up sand bags and others look like business as usual. >> we are a block from the water. >> reporter: restaurant owner says based on prior flooding, he is confident his business is safe. he doesn't want a riverfront flood wall going up.

coast. >> i have a feeling this weekend's hottest accessory is an umbrella. we have multiple rounds of steady and heavy rain to impact the northeast. you can see we are waking up on saturday morning with soggy conditions. stretching from michigan to the northeast. some of that is heavy rain. we will continue to see through the day today and into tomorrow with multiple rounds of it. the severe threat has shifted in parts of florida. we see 12 million people at risk for really the potential to see strong winds. that is the greatest threat today. we can't rule out a couple of tornadoes in jacksonville to tampa and fort pierce. this is the area we will see the greatest chance of tornado risk today. a day where you want the alerts or it is an indoor activity day. not just for today, but extending into p tomorrow as well. the threat into the carolinas. 13 million at risk for sunday.

this is into the afternoon hours as multiple rounds work through the area as we have an exiting system. that does include the potential for strong winds, including 60 or 75 miles an hour per gust at times. easy to knock down power lines and trees. we have a busy set up with the forecast through the next couple days. it will be soggy with rain causing flooding across the northeast. back over to you. >> almost 1.5 inches of rain in the washington, d.c. area in the last 24 hours. also this morning, we are tracking major developments from the pentagon. the army has grounded all non-essential flights after several mid air collisions in recent weeks, including one on thursday. nbc's correspondent courtney kube is here with more. >> reporter: this is a significant move, kristen. for the first time in a decade,

announcing a temporary standdown. no helicopters will fly anywhere in the world except in an emergency and only ordered by a general officer. this is after two army helicopters collided in mid air over alaska killing three soldiers and wounding another. the soldiers were returning from a daytime training effort. the latest collision is raising alarms after two helicopter crashes by blackhawk were killed during a night mission at fort campbell last month. late friday, the army's top officer released a statement saying we will focus on safety and training protocols to ensure pilots and crews have the knowledge, training and awareness to safely complete their assigned mission. kristen and peter, all army pilots must complete a mandatory

safety training before being allowed back in the cockpit. >> courtney with a lot of developments. thank you. to the war in ukraine where residents are bracing for another round of attacks, just one day after two dozen people were killed in the worst russian strikes in months. ellison barber traveled to the scene. she is now back safely in the capital city of of kyiv. ellison, what is the latest? >> reporter: peter, all 25 people lost their lives with the strikes. 23 of the people from the same apartment building. the youngest victim was barely old enough to walk. this morning, the search for survivors has turned to a grueling recovery after a barrage of deadly russian air strikes. rescuers are combing through what is left of the apartment building.

civilians from sudan ask under way according to the state department. they are traveling in the convoy of buses heading to the red sea before being taken out of the war-torn country. the u.s. is offering logistical support for the evacuations, but they still have to navigate a lengthy journey. different countries have taken different approaches to getting citizens out of sudan. the united states is coming under scrutiny for evacuating embassy staff while warning thousands of citizens there is no similar evacuation for them. in recent days, the scale of the fighting has declined with both sides respecting the cease-fire allowing a small window of opportunity for evacuation. some americans have found their own way out like denise and chris, on their way home to south carolina, after the school

free last saturday. one died in a standoff with police. priscilla thompson is here with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. that's right. one of the inmates is now back behind bars in the jail behind me. he was found some 400 miles away from where this prison break happened. jerry was taken into custody at a hospital here in houston, texas after someone called in a tip. there is still a massive manhunt under way. casey grayson and corey harrison should be considered dangerous. this escape claimed one independent life. investigators say one was fatally shot after pulling his

truck over after helping an inmate. that inmate is now presumed dead after a shootout with police after barricading himself in a home and set it on fire. there is still question of how the four men broke out of the cell and escaped through the roof of the prison in mississippi. now the atf is working to find the two who are still on the run. peter. >> that pastor trying to help a passerby. he loses his life. priscilla, thanks. back in washington, supreme court justice sam alito is speaking out about the leak on the ruling that overturned roe v. wade. he has a pretty good idea who is responsible for doing it. a month before the announcement, alito said the leak endangered the lives of the five justices and making them targets. after the leak, an armed man was

arrested near justice kavanaug's home. and pinning the blame on the airlines for the rise in flight cancellations. a report released said most of the cancellations are due to factors the airlines control like maintenance or lack of crew. the report says the airlines are taking longer to recover from weather disruption. the airlines argue the government is to blame for not having enough air traffic controllers. all right. let's now get a check of the rest of the country's forecast and check in with angie. >> good morning. we are watching flooding not just along the mississippi, but out west. let's start with the mississippi river where we have flood warning up from minnesota down to st. louis. you know why. that flooding we have been watching for days now in debuque, iowa and that is

springer, it is putting a spotlight on pancreatic cancer. the illness that took his life. kathy park has more on that and warning signs you should look out for. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. for decades, jerry springer made his mark as a talk show host. it is not known how long he lived with pancreatic cancer, but it spreads undetected and one of the deadliest types of the disease. this morning, a renewed spotlight on pancreatic cancer after the disease ultimately took the life of talk show host jerry springer. his family confirmed he died after battling a brief illness. just six months ago, the talk show host wowed the crowd on "the masked singer." while it is unclear when he was diagnosed, symptoms appear when the cancer is advanced and spread putting the five year survival rate at 5 to 10%. >> the pancreas is a tiny organ.
