flames. over 30 agencies responded. >> this is a difficult scene, something that's very hard to train for, something that we really haven't experienced locally. >> reporter: officials say these kinds of dust storms are not uncommon, but the number of vehicles and casualties is very unusual. >> i got lucky i wasn't crushed. i could have been. i pull off the left side here and got out, started going to different cars because there is cars all over the median. everywhere. >> reporter: in a statement illinois's governor calling the fatal scene horrific. >> my heart goes out to anybody that found themselves involved in this particular situation. my heart goes out to them. >> reporter: truly scary images there. state police say those hospitalized range from ages 2 all the way up to 80. we know at least one person was air lifted from the scene. and their injuries are described as everything from minor all the way up to life threatening.

savannah? >> what a tragedy. shaq brewster, thank you. also this morning the white house is confronting who crises that could have major consequences for the economy. the treasury secretary now warning the u.s. could run out of money to pay its bills in a matter of weeks if the debt limit isn't raised or suspended. and there are new concerns about the nation's banks following yesterday's sale of first republic bank to jp morgan chase. want to get to nbc chief white house correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. let's start with the debt limit. we have seen this before. what is the latest? >> reporter: we're now just 30 days away from that deadline for a possible default. that's according to the treasury secretary. that's really amping up the urgency for a deal here with the threat of an economic catastrophe looming. president biden on monday invited all four congressional leaders to the white house for a meeting may 9th, one week from today. nbc news just learned that house speaker kevin mccarthy accepted the invite.

he'll be there. still both sides hardened their positions here with the president vowing not to negotiate over paying over the country's bills. bills, remember, that have already been incurred, noted the republicans voted to raise the debt limit without conditions three times under former president trump. republicans, for their part, they are demanding future spending cuts and really taking aim at many of president biden's legislative priorities before they will agree to raise the debt limit. savannah? >> all right. we'll continue to watch that crisis. and then let's talk about the banking industry. first republic bank had to be purchased by jp morgan chase. how's the white house navigating this? the fear is some kind of ripple effect or contagion? >> reporter: yeah. another political headache for president biden. he also made clear this plan will protect first republic customers. but importantly he says taxpayers will not be left on

the hook here. the president is now calling on congress to step up regulations on large and regional banks to avoid this happening again. but there is still concern about the health of some of those regional banks that faced challenges with interest rates rising. savannah? >> thank you. let's move now to that intense manhunt for the suspect in that texas mass shooting. hundreds of officers involved in the search. but now they admit they have very few leads. nbc's sam brock has more on that story. hey, sam. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. the fog in cleveland, texas, this morning so thick you can barely see in front of you. the fourth day of the search for a murder suspect whose face, as you can see is appearing on billboards. this morning we are also learning the father of the murdered 9-year-old boy contacted police five times in 20 minutes waiting for aid that

came after the massacre. despite dogs roaming the streets and police canvassing neighborhoods, there's been no sign of francisco oropesa who police say erupted into violence when asked by neighbors not to file his assault rifle on the front lawn. >> it is truly just unexpected. >> reporter: on monday, a few false alarms as neighbors try to manage their terror. teresa morris heard shots from her daughter's shot down the street that friday night but had no idea the depth of violence unfolding. has it sunk in that you were witness to this gunfire? >> that's what sort of -- oh, i get a little emotional thinking about it. i was here when that happened. and i didn't do anything. but i didn't know, you know. what would i have done? >> reporter: the tears coming with major revelations about the massacre.

wilson garcia, whose son and wife were both murdered, told us he called police late friday night after the neighbor refused to stop shooting the gun and threatened them. garcia telling us he and his family called police five times in about 20 minutes. he says the neighbor turned up at the house and began shooting. officials with the county haven't responded yet to our requests. but they did tell nbc news they have ten days to respond to a request for answers. then there is confirmation that the suspect had been deported four times. but the community now just focusing on the pain. >> could have been us, you know? i mean, it is scary. it's scary. and i think it's starting to sink in. thank god it wasn't my family. >> reporter: in other notable developments, wilson garcia says that his wife got along really well with the wife of the suspect. in fact that oropesa had come to their house at one point and

helped them to cut down a tree. on the night of the murders, they saw him walking over with a loaded weapon and said, you go inside. i'll go outside and confront him because he would never shoot a woman. heart breakingly that proved to be wrong. hoda? >> a horrible story. sam brock for us there, thank you. authorities found the bodies of seven people found yesterday. the discovery came during a search for two missing teens and a convicted sex offender. the bodies were believed to be of a 14-year-old and 16-year-old. police say they also found the body of 39-year-old jesse mcfadden, the sex offender that the teens were traveling with. officials declined to provide details on how they died. all right. we have 15 minutes passed the hour. welcome craig to the table. >> welcome back. welcome back. good morning to you as well. more than a month after he was detained in russia, calls are growing louder for the immediate release of jailed american

journalist evan gershkovich. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in paris. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. it is good to be with you. gershkovich and his newspaper deny adamantly that he was spying in russia, but these are serious charges. if convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. "wall street journal" correspondent, last seen in court, is the first american journalist detained in russia on spying charges since the cold war, and he's being held at moscow's notorious prison. colleagues say he shares a cel with another inmate, is given one hour a day to walk in a narrow yard and is reading "war and peace" to pass the time. but gershkovich can receive mail, old-fashioned letters provided according to prison regulations they're in russian

that's where they met in 1971. just all the stories, everything about it was incredible. definitely a trip of a lifetime. >> love that let's get to this delicious recipe you have before you first of all, what are we making today? >> today i made a butter cake. and, you know, i am a chocolate lover. any time i make something other than chocolate, i'm just saying i promise you it's good. this is kind of one of those that if i'm not going to mak chocolate, it is one of my favorites. it is super simple you wouldn't have all the ingredients in your pantry it is easy to whip up. that's a lot of what this cook book is, experiments with different flavor profiles, having a little more fun and so, you can eat the butter cake by itself but i like it with heavy whip. you really can roasted strawberries in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes and i top it off with some balsamic reduction that balances all the sweetness. elevates the desert.

and it really was powerful >> reporter: reading about you going to bolivia, going to a high altitude, thin oxygen you have issues with your lungs. that sounded terrifying. >> it's like 14,000 feet almost, and i can't breathe. the place where i was staying, they got oxygen for me it taught me i could handle a lot, and it's okay. >> reporter: luke also writes about his complicated relationship with his mother, an accomplished journalist in her own right. you talk about having a little tension with her sometimes how did you work that out? >> i did some traveling with her. i began to understand her. and i began to realize, wow, this is somebody who has not given anything, had to work so hard for everything she had. i get why you were pushing me so much. >> reporter: a devout catholic, luke says it was in the holy land where he found clarity in jeru jerusalem. >> i had this very deep

meditative state that i go into, and i hear a voice in my head like, go pray. i'm kind of shaking. so i walk out and i don't know what to do in there. i started looking for something. and i see a buffalo bills yarmulke okay my father loved the buffalo bills. i said, i have to get that i said the western wall is open. i get this now dad is with me he's been here every step of the way. >> reporter: and you did tuck a prayer into the western fall for your dad. >> it was his favorite verse. i have fought the good fight and keep the faith >> reporter: divine. >> divine, yeah. >> reporter: the book is called "look for me there," which is what your dad used to say if you got separated at the baseball stadium. it is also about you looking for him and you found him. >> i did i miss him every day, but i know he loves me, and i know he's happy. we love each other. >> reporter: he would be so proud of you. >> thank you so much. >> wow
