overnight. that massive four-day manhunt in texas final over. >> that man accused of killing five of his neighbors with an ar-15 an hour after someone called the fbi tip line. >> at the time the suspect was hiding in a closet, according to authorities, under a pile of laundry in the nearby town in texas. sam brock joining us with the details. sam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the suspect accused much murdering five people including a child is behind bars this morning. we are learning about the additional arrests, and the manhunt is over. a man described as a monster is finally behind bars this morning, captured in a private home, ending an intense four-day manhunt. >> he was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry.

>> reporter: this video appears to show the moment that francisco oropeza was taken into custody. a crucial phone call to a tip line led to his arrest. >> we just want to thank the person who had the courage and bravery to call in the suspect's location. >> reporter: oropesa accused of killing his five neighbors. authorities say he became enraged. the arrest comes as new details emerge as a man deported from the u.s. four times. the district attorney saying he allegedly beat his wife last june, prompting her to file a protective order. although, the da says she ultimately didn't press charges. >> there were multiple occasions, we are not sure of how many, of police being called to that property for a firearm being discharged, and in 2022 a protective order was filed by his wife for domestic abuse. at any point did that prompt an investigation from your office?

>> yes, sir. we actually filed charges on him in 2022 and it -- to the best of my knowledge, they -- we got a warrant for him, and the constable went to serve him in another county because he left here and never could make contact with the subject. >> reporter: the victim's families overwhelmed by grief. jesse castillo remembering her sister diane who shielded her children with her body, saying her sister was just starting to live her life. so much attention has been paid to the amount of time it took to arrest him, and the infrastructure affected their response, and they had to divert deputies from an aggravated robbery to respond.

thank you. >> sam, thank you. the biden administration preparing to send an additional 1,500 troops to the southern border. that decision as it braces for a surge in migrant crossings in the next coming days. ga latest in the passing days. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. el paso declared a state of emergency. so have two other texas border cities. you can see behind me, there are already migrants sleeping in the streets here. you can see them waking up and covered in blankets. this extends for several city blocks. hundreds of migrants and more are expected when that covid border restriction known as title 42 is lifted next week. after illegal border crossings hit a record high last year, this morning the biden administration is now preparing to send 1,500 active duty troops to the southern border for 90 days. that's in addition to the 2,500 national guard members already there. the defense department says the troops will help customs and border protection officials with logistical support but -- >> military personnel will not directly participate in law

enforcement activities. >> reporter: here in el paso, texas, hundreds of migrants camping out in the streets with homeless shelters overflowing. some say sending in active duty troops sends the wrong message. >> it is dire, but we do see there is a failure in terms of the asylum system in the united states. >> reporter: five months ago we saw huge groups of my tkpwrupts crossing the border here, and a larger influx is expected to begin a week from tomorrow when a pandemic-era restriction known as title 42 is lifted. it allowed the u.s. government to more easily expel asylum seekers because of covid concerns. the policy has been used more than 2.5 million times since it took affect in 2020. now that the policy is ending,

some border officials expect the daily flow of migrants to double. >> we are going to see a surge of migrants. i'm preparing for 10,000 or so a day. >> reporter: republicans say they're skeptical the troop surge will have any impact. >> this is far from the end-all solution that we need for this crisis. >> reporter: but with a backlog of 2 million asylum cases, the homeland security says congress bears responsibility for failing to act with president biden's immigration reform proposal. >> what a powerful example of a completely broken immigration system. we have got to fix it. we need legislative reform. >> reporter: local officials say they have been asking officials for help for months. the governor greg abbott revived his controversial program of bussing migrants that cross into the u.s. to northern cities. >> gabe gutierrez for us in el paso. thank you. we are keeping a close watch

on the federal reserve today. trying to keep inflation in check. brian cheung is here with what it means for you and your wallet. the fed is expected to raise interest rates. is that going to be it? >> it has come down. but prices are still 5% more expensive this time than they were this time last year, which means that the fed that wants to see that number close to 2% still has a long ways to go. whether or not the fed can do an interest rate hike today, which as you mentioned is expected to be a quarter of a percentage point, remains to be an open question. can they do that without breaking things in the labor market where unemployment is at 3.5%, a half century low. we will see what the fed says about it this afternoon. >> we always hear about these rate hikes, but what does it mean for mary smith? how does it affect that person? >> what it means the mortgage rates, credit card rates, auto loan rates, anything you use to borrow essentially will remain high.

when you look at these headlines, the federal reserve is raising interest rates, it will continue to pinch the ability of households and businesses to borrow money and remain the case until the inflation rate is still high. >> now there is another wrinkle which is yet another regional bank failing. >> yeah. when we talk about first republic bank, which failed over the week end, there is the concern we're still feeling the aftershock of the silicon valley bank failure two months ago. you see stock markets expressing concern over other regional banks as well. can they pull this off without potentially breaking another bank? that's what we have to listen in in terms of commentary from fed chair powell later this afternoon. >> thanks. a deadly shooting at an elementary school in the capital of serbia. the suspect is a teenage boy. nbc's chief foreign

correspondent, richard engel, sling that story for us just breaking now. richard, what can you tell us? >> reporter: so a terrible development. an elementary and middle school, and according to witnesses, police reports, families, they say a student at the school, 14 years old, just after 8:30 in the morning as school was getting underway, he entered the school, had his father's handgun, killed the security guard, shot his teacher who is in critical condition and then according to local media started opening fire in his classroom, killing eight students, some of them reported to be his friends. now mass shootings outside the united states are extremely rare. school shootings even more rare. there hadn't been a mass shooting in belgrade in over a decade. witnesses described a very chaotic scene as parents rushed to the school to stkpraoeu find their children even as the gunshots were still ringing out. hoda? >> richard, thank you.

much more to get to. we say good morning to craig. >> good morning. good morning to you as well. new details are emerging on tucker carlson's sudden exit from fox news and the reported role that his own text message may have played in that firing. stephanie gosk has been covering this for us. >> as you know, reports have continued to leak out about carlson's private messages since he left fox. but this text, one of the most striking so far. overnight, a new report about former fox news host tucker carlson's private comments after his bombshell departure from fox news. in a text message obtained by "the new york times" send by carlson to one of his producers in the hours after the january 6th attack on the capitol, the host allegedly describes watching a video of what he called trump guys adding, it is not how white men fight. carlson adding he found himself

rooting for the mob. i really wanted them to hurt the kid. i could taste it. but then carlson writes, quote, an alarm went off. this isn't good for me. i'm becoming i don't want to be. if i reduce people to their politics, how am i better than he is? "the times" reporting the message was filed in the dominion lawsuit but remains redacted from public court documents. its contents were disclosed in interviews conducted with several people who have knowledge of the voting system's defamation lawsuit against fox. nbc news has not confirmed the contents of the text. the text message added to the growing number of internal issues that led to tucker's firing according to several people familiar with the matter. carlson courted a conservative audience, often with rhetoric about race and immigration. >> we have a moral obligation to admit the world is poor, even if it makes our own country poorer and dirtier and more divided. this policy is called the great replacement.

and light. steven boss, known as twitch to his fans, was the beloved deejay on ellen with the mega watt smile and signature dance moves. last year, a few weeks before christmas, twitch took his own life at age 40 america was blindsided twitch seemed so full of life to his friends, fans and his family, too. his wife alison says no one saw it coming. it was such a shock to the country, really, when the news broke. that guy who is dancing, always happy. everyone was like, what? why? did you have similar thoughts, emotions and feelings. >> i still feel like the rest of the world where i am still shocked. no one is ready for that moment, and there is no one that saw this coming, no one.

and that also breaks my heart, too. but i feel so sad that he was so there and we were in the knowing. he wanted to be the strong one for everyone, and i think that was scary for him to think he may need to ask for help people say a lot, what were the signs? i mean, he was so much love and light. he wanted to be everyone's superman he said that a lot >> everyone's superman. >> he could hold so much for people and i do, i think, it is it was hard for him to process that at the end. >> when you have your quiet time by yourself, was there something, was there something i might have seen or missed? do you do that >> i did it a lot in the beginning. i eventually had to tell myself that i can't change anything that's happened. >> alison says she and their three children have their good days and bad ones, but they're trying to move forward i'm looking at you, and you seem very strong to me. is that for you, for the kids, for the world? >> i think it's for all of them. i don't really have any other choice but to be strong.

now, they still see me have my highs and lows because there is a lot of it. all i can do is just try to move forward. >> the dance duo met in 2010 on "so you think you can dance. their love story was a fairly tale from the very beginning >> will you marry me >> yes. >> i feel like we all thought we knew twitch and we knew and loved him. but what was it like to really be in love with him? >> our love was magical. and it was so real and i think that's the hardest part about all of this the way we loved was so big, and i got 13 years with one of the most magical humans.

and learned -- i'm sorry i learned so much about love and gratitude. i talked to him every night. >> you do? >> i talk to him every night and it's different every night sometimes it is just like, i took the kids to school. other times it is a little bit deeper, a little more heavy. i don't allow myself to be in a place of anger or sadness, though i allow myself to feel it if i'm feeling this much pain it is because i had so much love. >> alison is managing some tough conversations with her children. 14, 7 and 3. when you had to explain to your young children >> it isn't something i would wish for anybody it's really hard but if i've learned anything is that communication is key. to us, daddy is in the stars

so we can go outside and talk to him whenever we want. >> what kind of questions are they asked about what happened >> first they just ask, when is daddy coming back? and that's a really hard one then we get a couple weeks later, well, does he come back when he's older. when daddy is older, he'll come back but they are still children and still obviously want him here. >> many struggling like twitch suffer in silence. studies suggest 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year. there is a stigma, i think, around when someone takes their own life, commits suicide. >> there is a large stigma that comes with it. we don't know what's going on. i don't know what's going on in his mind it is interesting the word "widow" is hard and it's never easy when you hear it. you know, the first time i ever heard it was really hard i was like, oh

>> now alison and her family are honoring twitch's legacy and partnered with her local branch with the national alliance on mental illness talk a little bit about what you're doing and how you want your husband's name and legacy to move on. >> what i would really love is to bring awareness to mental health, open up the conversations, but to hopefully help people to feel comfortable asking for that help i really do want to make an impact on behalf of someone i love so much >> alison says she finds comfort in the outpouring of support from fans and friends like ellen degeneres. >> to honor twitch, i think the best thing that we can do is to laugh and hug each other. >> have you been in touch with her?

>> she has been a huge support system for me. and talk about the fun memories that we had with him we get to live in those great memories that we had. >> you were talking about how you speak to him now are there questions you ask him? >> all the time. maybe one day there will be this big ah-ha of answers i do feel he's with me we know he's guiding us through every single day >> i mean, their love is so real, and it's so funny because i remember twitch came here and i co-hosted our show with him, and he lit the room up he made everyone feel seen and that she talked about him being everyone's superman, him carrying that load you never know what's going on inside someone or what they're going through. >> and she really didn't see it coming. >> she said she walked in their kids' room and they were up and looking out at night into the night sky and she said, what are you doing? they said, we're talking to dad. she's a great mom, and she's

>> which he always has been. >> uh-huh. >> how is love different now than it was back then? >> i went on an incredible journey through my wife for the past 20 years, and i think i've grown a lot. i think the albums really are about capturing those moments in time like i captured that moment in time of falling in love with the love of your life and having that moment. and then 20 years later us coming back together and trying to capture what this moment was, which is a very different thing. i think people are going to feel that on the album. somebody asked me on the red carpet at the met gala the other night, who else is on the album? what else is going on? just me. just me and my whole heart i think it is that and it does capture this moment in time for me when we first got back together a couple years ago and, yeah, it's a beautiful piece of work, i think i'm very proud of it and i can't wait to put it out later in the summer, early in the fall.

i had always been a fan of shauna rimes i grew up watching "scandal. and "how to get away with murder," and so when i saw her name on the addition breakdown, i was, like, i don't care, get me in there. >> we have come to expect from "bridgerton," it's got to be kind of juicy. is this a juicy prequel? >> i think the fans will be very, very happy. >> that's what i was hoping you'd say. it will be -- okay so we've got a love story. we've got king george. so i read that you reall delved into the history and tried to understand more about this historic figure. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. he's -- i'd encourage anyone that watches the show that wants to learn a bit more to read a lovely book by a guy called andrew roberts, who is an amazing historian. yeah there is all this new information. the royal libraries have come up
