rethink the summer camping plans in tahoe. doesn't look like summer in that shot. this is "today in the bay." we're bringing the sunshine with all of these colors on set this morning. good thursday morning to you. thank you for starting your day with us. 5:00 right now. i am laura garcia. we will check in with mike who will look at the commute in a bit, but let's turn it over to kari. >> we have had chilly weather and rain and snow in the sierra, and we will see more of that as we head through the forecast. in some spots we have had breaks here and there, but we are also tracking another round of rain moving across parts of the central valley and may be heading closer to the bay area within the next few hours. we are seeing a mostly cloudy morning and cool temperatures. as we go into today, we want to keep the umbrella somewhere close by, because there will be a chance of showers even though
5:02 am
we will see peeks of sunshine today. we make it up to about 60 degrees at noon, and we are also going to be tracking more wet weather, but it wont be as widespread as what we saw. mike, you see a little sheen on the san mateo bridge? >> yes, it's martin -- no, charlie, and i don't know which one is shorter. we are talking about the sheen. we don't have a major issue but the reminder was hit the roadway, and you see 92 across san mateo hills as well, and reminding you there may be slick conditions. as a result of a slide here, a sinkhole, highway 35 is closed by this section here by the winery. if you are familiar with it, but if you are not, don't worry about it. no problem for the drivers.

back over to you. >> thank you. in just a few hours oakland teachers will walk off the job after they could not come to an agreement on a new contract with the district. bob redell is live. what is this like for the students? >> reporter: well, they will be accepting students and there will be no teachers and therefore no instruction. the union that represents 3,000 teachers, counsellors, social workers and substitutes, they all announced they will go on strike this morning. yesterday the district announced they had a deal that was within reach, but then last night they announced they would be going on strike. and the oakland school

district failed to come to the table in good faith. and they have waited for days for a counteroffer to come from the district and they have been at the bargaining table and they say the district has been absent and tight-lipped. the union is calling for smaller class sizes, fair working hours and facility upgrades and more counsellors and nurses. >> it's an ongoing strike until the district takes our demand seriously and gets us a contract good for our students and teachers. >> is there a chance, can we get a tutor so we have money for that? it's just a concern that he will be behind. >> reporter: that's a mother expressing concern for her son over how long the strike might

last. again, there is more 34,000 students at oakland unified. the end of the school year is filled with milestone events, and we want to make sure regular school resumes as soon as possible. the district board president and superintendent will hold a news conference to discuss the strike later at 10:30. >> i totally understood the parents' concerns. what about the students themselves? what if they show up to school, will anybody be there? >> yes, people will be there, and there will be no teachers so there will be no instruction, but they will send people so if students do want to show up they will be safe. >> thank you for the latest there. a possible break in the

investigation of three recent stabbings, two of them deadly, near the campus of uc davis. police now detained somebody being called a person of interest. the most recent stabbing critically injured a woman on monday night. it followed those two deadly stabbings, one saturday near a place called sycamore park, and that's close to where police yesterday afternoon picked up a man that fits a witness subject description, and investigators are still not sure if all three stabbings are linked. and then this video went viral, and the business owner soon apologized claiming the person was loitering and ignoring his demands to move along. the court date was set to consider a plea agreement that would avoid jail time.

>> the department of homeland security will travel to the border. brie jackson is live in washington and the clock is ticking as restrictions are coming to an end. >> reporter: yeah, it certainly is. good morning, laura. mayorkas' visit comes as title 42 comes to an end one week from today. currently the rule allows migrants to be rejected, and many truckers say they were stuck for more than 24 hours due to inspections. the line to enter the bridge stretching for miles, and it's important to note that they are not looking inside the trucks to look for migrants or other

contraband, that is done by u.s. customs and border protections at the port of entry. the inspections are set to run through wednesday. meanwhile in nearby el paso, hundreds of migrants continue to gather as city leaders enforce a no camping rule starting on monday, and many local shelters are over capacity. and the pentagon is sending 1,500 troops over, and there are about 2,500 troops there already. the troops heading there will not be armed and will not use force or make arrest but will support border patrol as needed. in washington, i am brie jackson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. it's 5:08 on your thursday morning. let's take a peek outside.

scattered thunderstorms are expected this weekend, and more snow set to hit tomorrow. the massive snowpack around lake tahoe means camping will have to wait. many popular camp grounds are delaying their openings until june. they have to deal with the snow-melt, a lot of fallen trees and even broken water lines. it's hard to believe it's this early in may -- i was talking to our floor director this morning, and the epic passes that people have for skiing, they expire in may and may have to extend them. >> yeah, that's really amazing to see. the fact that we have a lot of snow on the ground, and there will be more coming this weekend, and also talking about the chance of thunderstorms, so just watch out for that. of course the camp season is
5:10 am
delayed because you can't camp on top of snow. it's unbelievable that we have this much more coming and the possibility of another 19 inches of snow between now and next thursday, so we're going to continue to talk about this over the next several days. we will talk about the bay area's active weather in a few minutes. mike, where can we find lower gas prices. looking at the arco on san pablo avenue, it's 4.29. campbell, safe way on hamilton avenue, it's 4.39 a gallon here in the middle, and the prices throughout san francisco county are up there. national petroleum on cesar chavez street, 4.59 is the best, and that's our highest cheapest -- i guess. we have almost all green sensors

5:18 am
one of the sailors from team usa is here to join us to talk about it. it's good to see it back. this is the final leg of the competition taking place across the world. tell us about it and how team usa managed to get to it. >> yeah, we're out here for our final event in san francisco, and it's happened on saturday and sunday, three races both days. it's the time event for the season with the around the world racing, and we have nine international teams and we are looking at 12 to 15 minutes each race, and the boats will do up to 65 miles per hour. they literally fly above the water, and it's right in front of the marina next to the francis yacht club. it's going to be an awesome weekend of racing down there. >> yeah, looking forward to it. big money on the line here.
5:19 am
a million-dollar race. how confident are you with your chances of winning and how many people do you have to split it with? it's expensive to sail. >> yeah. as opposed to how it gets slit -- split up, we will figure that out later. >> good luck to you. we know the sale gpt team will be pulling in a million-dollar finish there. thank you for joining us. >> thanks very much. >> but will the weather cooperate. it has been cloudy and rainy. they don't mind the water part. we are going to be watching one on saturday morning and we are keeping tabs on that.
5:20 am
we have seen waves of rain coming through. as we get a look at the radar this morning, another batch of heavy rain rolling out of the senate valley and will be moving to the bay area in the next few hours, and the rain is falling apart when it approaches and hopefully that will continue to be the trend and we can get a break from the rain. walnut creek, we are seeing a mostly cloudy start to our morning. we are looking at a few peeks of sunshine today, and we are keeping much cooler than normal temperatures, reaching the upper 40s and then headed for the low 60s by noon. just want to keep that umbrella handy because we are looking at spotty showers in the afternoon and possibly the evening as well. go into early on late thursday night, early saturday, we are going to see another round of rain coming in, a new system that will be bringing a quick round of showers, mostly before sunrise and the rest of saturday is looking clear. if you have outdoor saturday

plans, once again, it will start to clear out early in the day and we are still going to have the gusty winds. temperatures reach in the mid to low 60s today, and just a touch warmer compared to yesterday thanks to much less rainfall for this afternoon. as we look out ahead for the next six to ten days taking it out next week, it's still showing we are going to stay in the next weather pattern and extreme warmth for the eastern half of the country. we are just seeing a big split. this weather pattern will continue with the possibility of above average rainfall for much of the country, even with that warmer weather that will be out east. looking at our 7-day forecast, we are going to keep it cloudy and a couple spotty showers and temperatures in the 60s. another chance of rain on monday. after that we should be able to make it up to 70 degrees and sunshine, returning eventually for the middle of next week. seems like it's thursday, and

usually more people out but it's still light? >> yeah, not so bad, and this one stretch is a sinkhole that developed yesterday on highway 35, so there's a good portion of that is closed. if you know the area, you know to avoid it right now. the rest of the bay, no major issues. overnight crews still yet to clear from sunol. and that denser fog was in patches and crews are clearing on the golden gate bridge. this shot looks line across the golden gate bridge, but in the last five minutes you couldn't see the sky or towers. the clouds are drifting through and potentially fog. back to you. >> thank you. next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> he has more than 100 bucks tied up with the streaming service that won't let him cancel. he knees

welcome back. it's 5:25. monthly charges just kept piling up from the folks of the happiest place on earth. >> good morning, 89-year-old charlie in san josé tells us he signed up for disney plus month to month a while ago, and this past july he sent an email
5:26 am
asking them to cancel. disney kept billing him each month. he tried to stop it but disney kept charging him. in february, six months after first trying to cancel, he asked what we could do. at this point he wracked up $109 in charges for a service he dependant use or want anymore. our team contacted disney plus, and they contacted charlie the same day. he said, wow, you get very fast results. subscriptions are supposed to be easy to cancel in california. state law is on your side. stay tuned. we are working on a story about that and how to exercise your right to cancel. look for that story in the next

this is not your average goldfish or guppy. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this thursday. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we have a lot to get to this morning. let's get a start with the look at the forecast. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking what we can expect. it has been a soggy week. >> it has been a soggy week and we may see less rainfall today but not warmer temperatures. we do still have to keep the umbrellas handy as we are tracking rain around the region that will be moving closer as we go into the next couple of hours. for the most part as you step out the door, there's not a lot of active rain falling right now. the roads have had a chance to dry out, but we may see a return of spotty showers but overall sun peeking out from behind the clouds and the temperatures reaching into the upper 60s --

reopening. an update this morning on the teachers' strike set to begin a short time from now in oakland. this is where teachers are promising to picket starting at 7:00. the district says all of the campuses will be open so kids can still attend but there will be no class and no teacher. the students that do not attend will have excused absences. the district will have an update about a deal later this morning, and the teachers plan to hold a rally, and earlier this week the district proposed raises of at least 13% and up to 22%. the union is also calling for smaller class sizes, fair working hours, facility upgrades and more counsellors as well as nurses. both sides insist they want to reach an agreement as soon as possible. another mass shooting is under investigation.

a gunman opened fire at a medical office in atlanta. he actually had an appointment that day. his mother was with him had he opened fire. he killed a cdc worker and hurt four others. police searched for the suspect for eight hours before arresting him. here is one witness describing the scene. >> i was meeting a friend for lunch and saw the police rush in the building and there was a heavy and quick response. >> officers are still investigating the shooting. they have not yet revealed a motive. antioch police reportedly fired an officer accused of misconduct. that officer seen here is identified as matthew nut. he is not said to be tied to the ongoing probe surrounding the

poole, and looney had a season high in rebounds. coach kerr says the warriors and lakers benefit from short travel times. the warriors are super healthy. but coach says it's time for the players to get more strategic about their shots. >> we have to be smart offensively and not just go in and try to throw, you know, wild layup attempts over the top of them because that's what fuels their fast break. >> tip-off is at 6:00 tonight. still a few standing room only tickets available, and they are pricing but at least you get a free t-shirt and the first 3,000 fans will get the gold blooded splash towels. i will put my coaching hat on here, i did play basketball in high school and never scored,

but i remember the coach telling us you have to throw at the free-throw line. the warriors were out scored at the free-throw line by 20 points, so there's my two cents. >> coach kris with her advice. >> maybe you could get a spot on the bench. >> reporter: well, that was my spot in high school. >> thanks, kris. make sure you stick with the team covering the warriors all season long, you can watch the pregame coverage on our sister station, nbc sports bay area. following the game, nbc sports bay area will have postgame coverage. >> a lot of folks will be out there with kris is now. >> there will be a slight chance of rain but not as high as the other night. we are still going to keep an eye to the sky because our

temperatures will be in the mid-50s. it's going to be cloudy, and even if it's not raining it could be drizzling and cool with high humidity and gusty winds. tomorrow if you are making weekend plans ahead to the a's game, it's going to be nice but also cool. temperatures starting out in the upper 50s, and then heading to the low 60s as we go into the afternoon. we also will have the giants a little later in the evening tomorrow, so there will be a lot going on around the area between the east bay and san francisco going into tomorrow afternoon. maybe you want to hit the road and take a look at our forecast for paso robles this weekend. a mix of sun and clouds and reaching 67 degrees by the end of the weekend. mike, you are seeing a pretty predictable build for the commute? >> exactly. we see slowing down through berkeley, so the distribution not coming down the east shore

freeway. highway 4, typical spots where the arrows are, but no real surprises. with the teachers strike bob has been talking about, ac transit says this area may have disruptions to a couple buses for the day, so prepare for that one minor change. there could be slowing because the a's are playing, and it's a midday game and you will have the lunchtime crowd. the bigger factor may be as the folks get out and it would be after work traffic, and over here at chase center they have inside where the warriors are playing, and outside people will be rooting on the warriors, and it's an hour earlier than your typical 7:00 time, and that means 6:00 is the start of the game. the rest of the bay does move smooth, and we will track it
