attention for the most part. >> dada, i want to talk. >> well said. his daughter, olive green, and next to her, her brother, d.j. he brings them to the press conferences and says it's important to have them around. >> okay, tell them to stop copying you. >> stop copying me. >> you're copying me. >> okay, all right, one second. let papa finish. okay, we miss so much times with our kids, you know, and i think that's every working parent, right? it's not just us as basketball players. you have an obligation to provide for your child. growing up in the circumstances that i grew up in, i never want them to experience that. >> even though he's providing for his kids, he wants them to be around, he's empathizing with all working parents. we have different jobs. >> that's really real because
6:01 am
it's true, working parents. he just happens to have a very unique job. >> it's important for the father to be there, too, i love the fact that he's doing that. >> and the siblings are working it out. >> don't copy me. >> don't copy me. right now at 6:00, a story that's really heartbreaking and a shocker to a community. >> i've been part of a few cases of kids coming out of that area and i would never expect it of him. >> the suspected serial stabber in davis is now behind bars. his ties to the bay area and when he's expected to face a judge. >> another school day without teachers in oakland. they're heading to the picket lines once again. we'll have an update on where negotiations stand this morning and the hopes for a breakthrough to end that strike. this is "today in the bay." and a good friday morning to you. thanks so much for allowing us all to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll see if it's friday light
6:02 am
out there. maybe. so intriguing. first, let's get a look at the forecast, because it's been an interesting week. at least we have a dry morning week, but it's cinco de mayo, so there's lots going on around the bay area. in san francisco it's going to be a cloudy morning. in the evening it's going to be rainy in some spots and those rain chances will increase. in san jose we're going to see temperatures headed for 64 degrees, mostly cloudy, but then later this evening we're going to see rain picking up. take a look at overall, our bay area microclimates and what to expect, another jacket day and if you'll be out late, keep that umbrella handy. it is friday, lighter volume of traffic, but unusually slow coming down west 880, gillman we lost a lane for some sort of road work. not sure why, maybe a pothole repair. in the backup there was a crash,
6:03 am
so there's more slowing with folks coming off the bridge from san rafael. at the bay bridge toll plaza we had the expected backup, maybe a tad bit lighter but the lights are on. highway 4, highway 37, we'll show you the rest of the bay, what we would typically expect. same thing for the south bay where there's a little blip for san jose, north 101. back to you. developing for you now, that suspect arrested in the deadly stabbing spree in davis will be in court today. and we now know that he is from the east bay. >> several people we talked to say he was a star student, with a loving family. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us with what else we know. >> reporter: good morning to you. so this is what 21-year-old carlos dominguez looks like today after his arrest on murder charges. but people who knew him in east oakland where he grew up paint a pretty different picture. dominguez was arrested in one of the davis parks near the uc campus where a student was stabbed to death. police say 15 witnesses saw him at that park and that he was
6:04 am
wearing the very clothes witnesses reported seeing the day the second victim karim najm was stabbed to death. carlos dominguez is remembered as a bright student-athlete who played football, soccer and track. a former coach said his parents were active volunteers who were proud of their son. >> he was just wanting to learn and play where needed, you know, wasn't that aggressive. so i didn't think he had an aggressive bone in him. i don't know where it would come from. i don't know if something happened between the time he left high school and uc davis. >> a uc davis statement reveals one thing that happened, dominguez was separated from the university last tuesday for academic reasons, after three years as a student there. that was two days before the first victim, david breaux, was stabbed to death. as officers searched the apartment dominguez shared with
6:05 am
several roommates, neighbors were just as shocked. >> it's insane to think that we all walk our dogs, walk to our friends' houses, to think the guy lives five feet away from us. >> carlos dominguez is expected to be arraigned in yolo county today. the third victim in the stabbing spree remains in the hospital. she did survive. we reached out to dominguez's family. we have not heard a response from them at this point. laura and marcus. >> thank you very much for the latest, kris. and we, of course, are going to continue to follow this story closely today. we sent you an alert when news of the arrest first broke. be sure to download our free nbc bay area news app to get alerts sent straight to you. well, developing now, investigators are looking into a deadly shooting in san francisco's western district. this happened around 7:00 last night on eddy street near scott. officers arrived and found a man with a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
6:06 am
so far, no arrests have been made. anyone with information is encouraged to contact sfpd. families in oakland can expect more of the same as teachers enter day two of their open-ended strike. there's one new thread of hope this morning. we have a live look outside oakland high school where teachers plan to picket later this morning. once again, schools will be open but classes will not be taught. talks last night ended with seemingly little momentum, but now a mediator will be brought in to help with the bargaining process. state school superintendent tony thurman is getting involved as he did when the two sides were at an impasse back in 2019. >> my job is to make sure the conversation continues, that everyone is talking, and that we're looking at every single option for how to find some resolution. >> now, last time thurman got involved, an agreement was reached after 30 hours of mediation. bob redell will have a live update in our next half hour. new details this morning, the health department starting to test that soil near the
6:07 am
richmond refinery. crews began collecting samples yesterday. you may remember last thanksgiving a flaring event spread ash in the surrounding neighborhoods for several hours. health leaders later determined that the ash had significant levels of potentially dangerous metals. the county warned people not to eat any fruit or vegetables they had grown. people are frustrated and want to know how long this is going to take. >> come on, november, there's december, january, february, march, april. we're now into may. how hard is it to test what exactly is in the soil? >> everyone is just kind of, you know, waiting to hear whether it's safe or not to consume what they had, still planting the best that they can. ultimately trying not to eat anything if it could be hazardous. >> lab results from this soil sample collection should be available later this month. taking a live look outside on this now friday morning, cinco de mayo, i believe this is
6:08 am
san jose. it's a dry look, at least right now, as we've had rain showers. kari has a look at our forecast for today. what are we in store for? >> it's going to be cloudy to start, but we will see another wave of rain coming in later this evening. only a few peeks of sunshine today and temperatures remain cool, only reaching into the 50s and low 60s. if you're going to the sierra, there's going to be rain, possibly thunderstorms, and a little bit of snow for those upper elevations. next week we'll have a chance to dry out. we start to see the rain returning to the north bay at the evening commute time, about 5:00, and it picks up in intensity and becomes more widespread as we go into the overnight hours. most of us will be sleeping while the rain is hitting the roof, but we'll see it pushing out in time for saturday morning into the afternoon. so we'll talk more about that. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> we try to judge lower, the past few months, it's below $4.
6:09 am
squeaking in just below $4, best price on the chart, tri-valley, the safeway on dublin boulevard at $3.99. milpitas, $4, it's on south avenue in milpitas. and then american canyon, we have napa county's best, $4.39 at the safeway on american canyon road. that's with the help of all of you who are reporting through gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, you're all getting along pretty well. we did have a crash on the eastshore freeway that has cleared. we've got a new crash on 580, but eastbound. it might affect folks exiting at isabelle. watch the off ramp. we're looking at travel times, commute direction 580 moves just fine out of the altamont, vasco is showing a little slowing, volume build. back to you. >> thank you, mike. be careful the next time you get a parking ticket. it may be bogus. coming up, where these phony tickets are being found and the
6:10 am
sign that you should look for. >> the jobs numbers, the steam train that is the american economy keeps chugging ahead. let's take you out to the futures where wall street is ready to buy. >> and it is cinco de mayo, but you probably won't find many celebrating in mexico. we dive into the history of the holiday and a special way to lebrate in the south bceay
6:11 am
6:12 am
6:13 am
right now it's 6:12. as we take a live look outside in palo alto, a nice, quiet start to our friday morning. it's most cloudy and as of now no rain. rain chances increase later this evening, so we have a few more hours to get out and about and not have to worry about lugging around the umbrella. we'll talk about the return of rain and look at the weekend forecast in a few minutes. >> the crash cleared near golden gate, westbound 880, speeding toward the toll plaza where the metering lights were turned on. the san mateo bridge, that's an aggressive lane change. traffic flows smoothly, but we have someone in the service lane. it doesn't look like there are brakes tapping. we'll monitor the drive. good morning. very happy friday to you. apple's tim cook talked to analysts and reporters about profits and plans. no big layoffs, he says. a dividend and stock buyback for shareholders as predicted.
6:14 am
now, the breaking news, i don't know how many times i have stood before you and said, well, that jobs report was way bigger than expected. maybe i have to do a better job with my predictions. but the jobs report number for april just came out a few minutes ago, and that jobs report was way bigger than expected. bigger than last month's, in fact. the american economy added 253,000 jobs in april, in the midst of bank failures and interest rate hikes. the unemployment rate falls to 3.4%, back to historic lows we have not seen since the '60s. now, there were some downward revisions to the past month's estimates, but the american economy is just a stream train. the fed, of course, trying to slow that train down to fight inflation, but hourly wages were up. we're making 4.4% on average this year compared to last more, and the current inflation rate is 5%. so we are almost there. >> pacific western is the latest
6:15 am
bank in trouble, though the bank says customers aren't pulling their money out, which turns a bank's problems from bad to disaster. pacific western is based in beverly hills. these regional banks like pacific western or silicon valley bank in wealthy silicon valley, had a lot of rich clients, and you would think rich clients are good clients. but when a bank has depositors who have more than $250,000 in deposits, they are more likely to take that money out because it's not protected by the fdic. it's over the limit. >> vice president harris met with leading ai companies at the white house on thursday to talk about the future and perhaps future regulation of ai. we don't have video of the meeting, other than some shaky cell phone video, but here is sam altman, the guy behind chatgpt, arriving at the white house gate. >> cnbc here.
6:16 am
what are you looking forward to today? >> i am excited to have a discussion. i think it's important and a good time for it. i'm super late. >> do you think the white house is moving quickly enough on regulations? >> hard to say, but i think they're seriously engaged and want to get to the right place. >> he's not late, super late, with a meeting with the vice president of the united states. >> was he super late? >> possibly. but, yes, as we were talking earlier, late stresses me out in a way that in the cab or the uber ride to the airport, if we're five minutes behind schedule -- i'm pretty low key about everything else. >> a lot of viewers have seen me running through the airport. >> or heard your name. >> the doors are shutting. >> that happened to me once. i made the flight. >> thanks, scott. let's take a live look out
6:17 am
at san francisco this morning. there's a warning you need to listen up for, because parking tickets on your windshield might be fake. so sf mta confirms scammers have been leaving bogus tickets on cars all over the city and the ticket tells drivers to pay immediately using the qr code, only they're not paying the city, just the scammers. they say a good way to check to see if your ticket is real is to look it up online. it should also have a blue logo that says sfmta at the top of that ticket. >> getting so creative. >> a lot of people get them and they want to pay it fast. >> i don't do that. >> we'll work on it. you know what today is, cinco de mayo, and while it's relatively minor, the day in mexico, the festivity is really an excuse here in the u.s. for people to indulge in marg reet
6:18 am
margaritas out and tacos. >> contrary to popular belief, today does not mark mexico's independence day. rather, today honors the 1862 battle of pueblo where they defended french forces from invading the town. so while you might want tacos today, they'll be eating this traditional dish of mole. it's a thick sauce made with chocolate, chiles. it's great. gilroy cinco de mayo celebration is still in need of donations for their toy drive. they're teaming up to provide toys to the children of farmworkers in santa clara county. the idea is to give back to the families of workers who took care of us during the pandemic. you can drop off toys at the
6:19 am
washington youth center in san jose. i'm going to try to make a point to do that. the farmworker caravan is amazing. they supply toiletries, they suffered a lot during the flooding down there. >> and during the pandemic, but also every day. >> thank a farmworker. if you sit down to eat at the table, their hands have been on something. >> every drink or shot you take, you give a toy. >> hey, all right. >> sounds like a challenge. >> sounds like a lot of toys. we're celebrating, there's a lot going on around the bay area. we've also had a lot of rainfall, and it's going to be coming back later this evening. there's also going to be many events going on around oakland, so we're starting out at 53 degrees this morning as you head out, and it's going to be a cool day once again, heading for the upper 50s. rain will return later on this evening. and we're only going to reach 62 today, 64 in hayward, low 60s for much of the north bay. so let's talk about the timeline of that rain.
6:20 am
it's right in time for the evening commute for the north bay where we start to see spotty showers coming in. if you're out later this evening in the north bay for dinner, that's when you're going to need the umbrella. it also starts to make its way into the inland contra costa county area, and then as we go into the rest of tonight, rain picks up in coverage and intensity. but if you have some saturday plans, the good thing is that a lot of that rain is going to be clearing out around 9:00 to 10:00. at 4:00, it is bright and sunny, and we're seeing the rain winding down. also on sunday, it's going to be dry, but as we start the new week, another round of rain will be coming in. so we're going to see the spotty showers, mostly a light rain start to our monday, and then it could wrap up with another spotty shower or two on tuesday. after that, we're going to be drying out as the storm trek heads farther to the north. our temperatures will be warming up. with all of this rain, as well
6:21 am
as sierra snow, we're checking in on our reservoirs. where do they stand right now? even with the beginning of the sierra snowmelt happening, lake oroville, shasta, already at 98% of capacity. trinity lake, which fills up more slowly and relies more on sierra snowmelt is a lot lower, so that's good news as we are going toward warmer temperatures next week. looking at our inland temperatures and our forecast, some early-morning showers on saturday, clear the rest of the day. sunday is also a great pick of the weekend, but then on monday as we're going back to work, some spotty showers will be returning. mike, you're checking on the san mateo bridge. >> because over here in the service lane we had a disabled vehicle sitting there. it has since gotten back into traffic. everything moves well. this is friday. so we're at speed still, despite the earlier issue, which is not an issue now.
6:22 am
dumbarton bridge and 880 coming down into hayward out of san leandro moves smoothly. mostly green sensors. mostly orange and yellow, recovering from the earlier big backup as folks are traveling toward gillman, the earlier crash, the build out of the bay bridge toll plaza because the metering lights are still on. the rest of the bay, mostly green sensors. traffic starting to feed in off of san martin with much more mild slowing than previous days this week. coming up next, nbc bay area responds. >> scammers are preying on workers when they're most vulnerable, looking for a job. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we're sharing one man's run-in with an hr imposter to protect you next. >> plus, the oakland zoo is saying farewell to a beloved elephant. elephant. this girl is now

new this morning, the oakland zoo will soon say good-bye to one of its beloved african elephants. last month, lisa, one of the elephants passed away from age-related health issues, leaving her best friend donna alone. zoo keepers say female elephants are deeply social and create life-long bonds. the zoo made the decision to move her to an elephant sanctuary in tennessee so she
6:26 am
can join a larger group of female elephants. donna will move in in june. i hope they're accepting of donna. it's hard to make friends when you're in different stages of life. >> this is true. tennessee is a great place. >> the golden girls of tennessee. you know what? searching for a job, that can be stressful. we all know that. now adding to that stress, even more stress, because scammers are targeting job seekers. >> consumer investigator chris chmura has a warning. >> reporter: since the pandemic started, the feds have tracked a sharp rise in fake job scams designed to steal people's identity and money. diego martinez in san francisco applied for a work-from-home tech job. fast forward, a recruiter said he got the gig and started asking for lots of personal info. diego started asking questions. >> i just don't want to be scammed. and as soon as i said the word scammed, there was radio silence for, like, two seconds, and they
6:27 am
hung up the phone. >> reporter: the real company diego thought he was applying to, said the job posting was bogus and the recruiter was just a savvy imposter mimicking the legitimate company. people all over the country are falling for this. tonight at 11:00, we'll walk you through several warning signs, plus why tech workers should be especially cautious. diego contacted us online. you can, too. snap the qr code on your screen to fill out our consumer complaint form online. i'll join you again tonight at 11:00. >> thanks, chris. a lot more ahead this morning, including a new turn. this is in the wake of a violent altercation caught on video. the man who initially wound up in the hospital is now apparently himself the suspect of a police investigation. we're going to tell you what the chief is telling police commissioners this morning. >> reporter: day two of the teacher strike here in oakland,

6:32 am
look at walnut creek this morning. it is a mostly cloudy morning, only 50 degrees, and it will be a slow warm-up, only reaching into the low 60s later today. we're also going to see the return of showers, first in the north bay, right around dinner time, around santa rosa and moving into marin county. eventually that will be moving toward napa county as well, and spreading into the east bay by late this evening, 9:00 to 10:00, we could hear rain falling as we move through the east bay. most of the rain comes through overnight. as you're heading out on saturday morning, the rain will be moving out. i'll talk more about that and also the weekend forecast. >> thanks, kari. in just a few hours, teachers will be back on the picket lines in oakland for day two of their strike. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live this morning from oakland high. i know a lot of people have been talking about this and a lot of parents are worried. do we know if there's been any kind of movement with contract
6:33 am
negotiations? >> reporter: not that we're aware of. good morning to you, marcus and laura. we do know the state superintendent of education, tony thurman, has been brought in to try to mediate a deal between oakland unified and the roughly 3,000 teachers, counselors and other staff who work at oakland high behind me and the other schools in the district. we're expecting the teachers will picket in front of these schools. one of the lead negotiators says her team not only hasn't received a meaningful contract proposal in writing from the district, but they just learned they've been bargaining with negotiators from the district who are powerless to finalize a deal. >> the school board has not given the ousd bargaining team the authority to settle this contract, so that's really frustrating to know that that's the case. we have been bargaining for seven months. why has this not been resolved? >> my job is to make sure the conversation continues, that everyone is talking and we're looking at every single option
6:34 am
for how to find some resolution. >> reporter: that was tony thurman, the state superintendent of education. when he stepped in four years ago as mediator, the teachers and oakland unified were able to come to an agreement within 30 hours of mediation of his arrival. in a statement last night, ousd says its team has worked day and night trying to hammer out an agreement and felt they had, quote, closed the gap significantly, making an unprecedented compensation offer to our teachers, the superintendent said that offer totals nearly $70 million. again, quote, a historic offer. but the district says some of the things the union wants are too expensive or outside their authority, like ending student homelessness and transportation for all students. school will be open again today, but there's not going to be any teachers. there will be no instruction, but if students show up, staff from the central office will be
6:35 am
here to ensure there is some supervision and the schools are safe for students who do want to show up. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> that's certainly one a lot of people continue to follow. hopefully they can end the negotiations soon. >> for the latest details, we'll continue to follow the story on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. also, make sure to download our free nbc bay area app to get alerts sent straight to your phone. crews are fighting a massive commercial building fire in los angeles. this is a warehouse fire. it is in commerce. this is a live look at it right now. now, earlier, about an hour ago, those flames were really high. you can see the smoke billowing into the air. it looks like firefighters have had a chance to kind of contain this fire, as you see them kind of hitting it from all angles. nearly 100 firefighters responded. they've been able to keep that fire contained to the building, which we understand contains textiles.
6:36 am
there doesn't appear to be any threats to homes as it is a commercial area, so far no reports of any injuries. happening now in fremont, police are looking for these two missing 10-year-old girls. we want tou look at your screen closely because they were last seen in the area of cecelia court near ardenwood elementary school, the two girls described as asian, 4'7" tall and 50 pounds. anyone with information, you are asked to call fremont police. new developments in the case of a former san francisco fire commissioner involved in a violent confrontation with a homeless man don carmignani being investigated by police. he mau recall he suffered head injuries that led to a homeless man being arrested and then released because carmignani never testified during a preliminary hearing. the hearing included video showing what defenders say was carmignani targeting homeless people with bear spray, which they argued triggered the

violent confrontation. while the case is active, police are investigating the bear spray attacks, that's what chief bill scott said this week. carmignani's team has not issued a response but has previously denied he was seen in that video. 6:36 right now. the warriors responding to their adversity like true champions, winning last night's game against the lakers to even out the series. >> after the game dub nation ecstatic. >> warriors! >> we had a first messed-up game but made up for it today. warriors in six. >> the hair, the makeup, everything, a true warrior fan. those fans out there packing the center, zendaya was there with her beau and actor danny devito attending the game. the warriors completely turned things around from game one. this is all thanks to the defense that they have, the

6:39 am
now, tomorrow for the cinco de mayo car show that's happening in san jose, this is going to be a little soggy to start. so we're watching out still for lingering showers throughout the morning, but it will begin to clear out as we go into the afternoon. and by the time the pleasanton wine and art stroll begins, it's going to be all clear, but still chilly as the temperatures reach into the low 60s. and the later we get in the evening, the cooler it's going to be as we drop down to the low 50s. and speaking of cool, take a look at the live shot at palisades tahoe. if you will be heading up to the sierra this weekend, there will be a slight chance of thunderstorms and high temperatures reach the upper 0s. with the rain ongoing, it could change over to snow. it does clear out for the end of the weekend. mike has a look ahead for the commute. >> pretty standard for a friday. no major problems. the build finally in the last few minutes filled in all lanes at the bay bridge toll plaza and it continues to build on a typical pattern westbound across the bridges and then out of the
