"today in the bay's" stephanie magallon was caught right in the middle of that mayhem. >> reporter: a chaotic ending to the cinco de mayo celebration. dozens yelling at san jose police conducting traffic stops. they started clearing out the la plaza san jose. using a chopper, patrols and officers on foot. >> everybody started burning tires. that's where it started. helicopter, cops everywhere, telling you to go home. >> it was really crazy. a lot of people were doing, like, tire things, people were getting arrested. >> reporter: the crowd says dozens of cars started peeling out, creating plumes of smoke

cinco de mayo celebrations continue today in the south bay. t's look at the map. caltrans will be closing several off-ramps to help control downtown san jose.h through l include closures on 101, 280 and highway 87. the closures run from 4:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. today and tomorrow. the historic coronation of king charles iii took place today. king charles at 74 is the 40th monarch to be crowned at westminster ababbey, dating bac centuries. jay gray has more on this historic event. it's 3:00 p.m. in the uk on this historic coronation day. >> reporter: good morning to you. you can hear the bells still ringing here at westminster abbey, have been for more than

an hour since the end of the coronation service, on what has been a typical london day. chilly, overcast, rainy for much of the day. the day, though, anything but normal, as most of us have seen. the coronation of king charles, an ornate marriage between what was a solemn religious service and a tradition-filled celebration. a king anointed and adorned in the regalia. the family in front, except for harry, charles' estranged son a few rows back. the ceremony continuing for two hours, followed by a magnificent procession. 4,000 members of the british military escorting the historic golden carriage carrying the king and queen. his immediate family, tens of thousands lining the mall into buckingham palace. minutes after the arrival, the front gates opened and thousands poured inside to get as close as

possible to the front balcony there where the king and queen finally stepped out and gave that traditional wave to the crowd that gathered below. the rest of the working royals coming out to join them on the balcony, and the grandchildren out there. they stood for several minutes waving pointing at those in the crowd. there was a flyover despite the dreary conditions. it was a dramatic display, the red, the white and the blue coming as they flew down the mall and over buckingham palace. and, eventually, as the rest of the family went inside, we saw the king and queen back out for an encore. the queen leaving and the king turning one final time to wave to that crowd. look, he's been the king really since the death of his mother late last year. he's been through all the duties and been maintaining those duties. but for so many, today made it

official. the crowning of the king and the official beginning, many say, of the era of king charles iii. really an amazing and historic day. >> jay gray live for us in london, breaking down the pomp and celebration. jay, thank you. well, after two days of picketing, there is a proposal on the table, but it may not be enough to end the oakland teachers strike. that means, come monday, teachers might still be walking and parents might still be scrambling. "today in the bay's" thom jensen reports from oakland with how families are coping. >> reporter: oakland education association team members combed through the latest contract proposal they received via embellishment from ousd. one of their lead negotiators says it doesn't appear to be complete, and it is difficult to decipher. >> there are things that look to be status quo, which is not what we're looking for to support

students. >> reporter: they hope ousd will work out better details this weekend, but for now, parents are bracing for a second week of picketing and no classes come monday. two parents we talked to said they're keeping their kids home rather than sending them to the schools, which are open but without classes. >> we really want to support the teachers and let the process go through and not cross the picket line. that's important to us. >> we are keeping them home again in support of teachers and oea members. we are not crossing picket lines with our kids. >> reporter: moms and dads are doing their best, even if it means doing their jobs remotely or taking jobs off. >> fortunately, i didn't work today, so i was able to be with him today. my wife took the day off yesterday. >> reporter: and the kids? >> it is almost the end of the year. i want to be able to get as much -- the rest of third grade as i can before school ends. >> i do miss my teachers, but mostly at the same time, i

really like to snooze. >> reporter: they may be getting to sleep in right now, but what about this summer if the strike lasts for weeks? will students have to make up classes? the district has not responded to our questions about that, but the parents say they're in this for the long haul. >> the long-term goal of what oea members are fighting for, the services needed at our school, definitely out-weighs this glitch of adjusting to our schedules as parents. >> maybe teachers on strike is what will be the political will to make those things happen. >> that's great to hear. we know it's not easy for families out there. we know families are making it work. >> reporter: oea's bargaining co-chair told me there is an open invitation for ousd negotiators to come back to the table this weekend. right now, there are no new negotiationsjensen, "today in t" the a's are again in the headlines but this time, it's because of their long-time tv announcer. glen kiper appeared to use the

good morning, everyone. welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." taking a live look at the transamerica building in san francisco. it's turning out to be a pretty soggy morning there and across the bay. well, hundreds of people in the college town of davis gathered last night to mourn a ucd student stabbed to death. the memorial just hours after an oakland man and former uc davis student faced a judge, accused

of the deadly stabbing spree. here is audrey. >> reporter: a somber friday at uc davis as many gathered to mourn a death from a student walking home from an award ceremony. the memorial was on campus where najin was to graduate in six weeks. friends and family turn tooks speaking about him. >> the unimaginable loss. >> i offer on behalf of the campus our deepest condolences to you for your loss. i know i speak for everyone at uc davis when i say we are devastated by kareen's loss. we lost an incredible man. >> reporter: the man accused of stabbing him and two others pled not guilty. 21-year-old carlos dominguez hardly moving with his eyes

process three weeks ago. the city also says out of 70 people living at the encampment, 57 have accepted shelter services. the city will now move forward with plans to build 170 units of permanent, affordable housing nearby. happening today, several bay area non-profit organizations will be building bikes to give back to the community. the 13th annual bike build event will take place at the together sf warehouse in san francisco. organizations will be helping build 120 brand-new bikes to distribute to kids in the bay view area. everyone is welcome to attend the event which starts at 8:00 a.m. all right. if you're looking for activities to do, our mike inoye has you covered. >> one person's trash can be another's treasure, or enough for an exhibit at san jose's king library.

good morning in the east bay. look at the rain moving in over parts of concord. a heavier cell moving in over walnut creek and stretching down into the dublin interchange. of course, be careful on the roadways. even if your city isn't seeing rain at this hour, we are seeing the effects continue out on the roadways. pushing it down a little bit into the south bay, seeing some rain over the santa cruz mountains, even into parts of morgan hill. everybody wants to know, will this rain continue for our weekend forecast? good newsstarting to push on through. by lunchtime hour, still as i was mentioning, hanging on around the south bay. look at that, we are clearing out and drying out as we go into your saturday afternoon. even on into sunday, we'll start the day with some cloud cover, but then it'll be the best day of the weekend to enjoy any plans you want to do. sunday is your best bet because we are still tracking more rain for the bay area. in the seven-day forecast, that's as much as we are going to get. it'll happen on monday.

"today in the bay" has her story. >> it's extremely hard and terrifying to take that first step. kids, you know what i'm talking about? >> reporter: in march, 300 people of all ages packed this room at the los altos community center to meet best-selling author kelly yang. yang was on tour promoting her ninth book, "finally seen." >> okay, let's take a picture. >> this book, if i could say one thing, is i want everyone to be seen. i want us to stop being invisible. do we want a future where only some of us matter? or do we want a future where all of us matter? >> thank you for writing books that our students absolutely love. >> reporter: yang writes about the immigrant experience in her books, her experience. the u.c. berkeley graduate immigrated to america when she was 6 years old. >> my parents and i lived and worked in motels. i was afraid to tell my friends really anything about me and

what my parents, just the way we lived. i waited so long to see myself represented on the page. >> reporter: in 2021, that representation was threatened when her book, "front desk," was banned. >> a book written by an asian-american woman who lived in the bay area for many years has been banned by a school district, not in alabama, not in louisiana, but banned in new york. >> one of the most important, kind of freedom is the freedom to read. >> reporter: yang took action and wrote. the result, "finally seen." >> the personal experience for me is having my book banned, you know, and what that would have felt like if i was a young immigrant kid sitting in that classroom. so i remember young kelly, what that felt like to be in the class classroom, and how exhilarated i would be if we had these books. having representation matters. these books matter to kids. they see themselves in it. they see their parents in it. thank you, high five. >> reporter: yang's next book, "top story," will be set in san

capitol rioter from the january 6th attack to 14 years and 2 months on friday, the longest sentence for a capitol rioter yet. peter schwartz, who has 38 prior convictions, said he regretted the riot damage. the justice department said that schwartz demonstrated zero remorse for his conduct. that's according to prosecutors. schwartz was armed with a wooden tire knocker and engaged in assaults on officers during the riot. he was the first to throw a folding chair at the line of officer protecting the capitol's lower west terrace. happening today, california leaders are moving forward with plans for reparation for from time to times -- african-americans. they'll talk about the compensation due and who may be eligible. analysts crunched the numbers and estimate some older

inside, the gates eventually opened to the front. thousands rushing through, tried to get as close as they possibly could to the front balcony. a few moments after that, the king and queen stepping out, giving a wave to the roar of that waiting crowd. the traditional iconic image of the leader stepping out onto that balcony and waving to everyone. he was eventually joined by that working royal family as well as his grandchildren. even in these dreary conditions, we did have a flyover. there was some concern that may not happen because of low cloud cover, butarrows coming through. the red, white and blue streaming from the tails of those planes. charles makes one last step onto the balcony, a final wave good-bye. i have to tell you, the celebration, like these bells, not over yet. there is going to be a huge concert tomorrow. that at windsor castle.
