6:02 am
early in the day and reaching upper 60s for concord, 69 in morgan hill, and 71 today in santa rosa. going into tomorrow, we start to see those temperatures cranking up a few more degrees, leading into a warmer weekend. we'll take a look at that in the forecast in a few minutes. mike, you were looking at an unexpected issue at the carquinez bridge. >> i wanted to clarify the report coming in. you do see a little slowing as you're approaching for eastbound 80. that's opposite the bulk of our commute, which comes from vallejo. if you're heading toward the carquinez bridge, you'll lose one lane just as you hit cummings skyway, there's electrical work, unplanned as far as i see on the grid. they hope to have that cleared before the afternoon and evening commutes kick in. so eastbound 80, one lane down. that will affect both directions, likely, as you approach the bridge. other than that, nothing expected, everything moving

right on schedule. back to you. there's breaking news coming into our newsroom. we were talking about this last hour. we are now sitting 5% more than we did last year when it comes to inflation. scott, you've been following this for us and you say there is good news here. >> it's actually 4.9%, if we want to get real exact. is it more than last year, yeah, it is. it's less than the peak of inflation where we were paying something like 9% more than we used to. this trend continues to move down. the latest read on the consumer price index shows 4.9% is the headline number, 5.5% when you strip out volatile prices of food and energy. >> we were talking about this, and you say the feds want inflation to be around 2%. >> so we're not there yet. but the fed has said they are going to ease back on interest rate hikes and let them take effect, and this is certainly one sign. it's not a strong sign, but it's one sign that that seems to be working so far. >> i know you look at it
6:04 am
differently than most of us. anything different or unusual you're seeing? >> i was just about to hand this to our graphic artist. the things that stand out to me, eggs are still expensive, up 21%. that's mostly bird flu. gas is down 15%, appliances down 15%. and then pet food. that jumped out at me, up 14%. it depends on the category. they measure hundreds of categories, but the big one, gasoline, we're paying about 15% less than we used to. >> a lot of us still have to use that quite a bit. >> yes, we do. >> thanks. new fallout after the stunning verdict in the lawsuit against former president donald trump. a new york city jury is awarding writer e. jean carroll $5 million, finding trump sexually abused and defamed her. now both are speaking out. 6:05 am
morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, laura. carroll says she is, quote, overwhelmed with joy and happiness as a result of this verdict that comes after years of denials from donald trump surrounding her claims. now, the verdict marks the first time in history that a former president has been found liable for sexual misconduct. the jury did not conclude carroll was raped by the former president, which carroll and her legal team had claimed. instead, the judgment found trump liable on the charge that he sexually abused carroll in a manhattan department store in the 1990s. the jury found trump defamed carroll by calling her claims a hoax and a con job. in an interview with savannah guthrie this morning, the writer says her lawsuit, for her, was never about the money. >> this is an astonishing thing about this win yesterday, of all the cases that this man faces, all of the legal quagmires, it was one -- well, think of all
6:06 am
the prosecutors, all the special counsel, all the investigators, and what happened yesterday is one 5'2" little blond, wiley female attorney -- >> 5'9". >> -- 5'9", and a 70-year-old advice columnist beat donald trump in court. >> reporter: donald trump, meanwhile, blasted the verdict on social media, saying he has, quote, no idea who this woman is. also, his 2024 presidential campaign says the decision will be appealed and ultimately, quote, we will win. the verdict carries no criminal implications. the legal bar for liability in a civil case is not as high as in criminal cases. you can watch the full interview with carroll later on "today" at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." >> lots will look forward to

6:21 am
we're going to see those temperatures in the upper 60s, good thing i don't play for the warriors. we're in the upper 60s for today for concord, and 62 degrees in oakland. we'll be in the mid-60s for san mateo, redwood city 63 degrees, and upper 50s near the coastline. for san francisco, we have some low 60s for highs today and for the north bay reaching 68 in napa, and a really comfortable 71 in santa rosa. so what's about to happen here, high pressure will build, the heat will ramp up, and also really building for the pacific northwest as well. we're going to be hearing a lot of headlines about that. as the high pressure moves to the east with its clockwise wind flow, it will push the potential for storms over the sierra into the bay area. right now the chance is very slight, but we'll be watching that as we go toward the end of the weekend. and take a look at fairfield, how much hotter it's going to be, going from 70 degrees today to 82 on friday, and 91 degrees
6:22 am
on saturday. we'll be blasting the ac and the hot weather also continues into the middle of next week, before it gradually cools off. you see on mother's day the isolated chance of thunderstorms. the chance is very slight. it will most likely be in the evening. we're still hitting 88 degrees and low to mid-80s into the middle of next week. mike, you're tracking a crash in the north bay. >> we're reporting a slowdown. this crash reportedly cleared just north of gold hill a few minutes ago, but the slowing sticks around longer than i thought it was going to. so coming off the junction, southbound 680 still slow. by the time you get past gold hill and the overnight area where they've typically had construction, no other problems as you're coming down in the commute direction toward the carquinez bridge. we have road work heading in the

what happened is a garbage truck accidently spilled this mercury behind me in the parking lot of the amtrak train station here in martinez. and then spread the mercury on the local streets here downtown. contra costa health does not believe there's a risk of breathing the air in the area, but we are concerned about people stepping in it and possibly bringing it into their homes. the county has shut down parts of this train station parking lot. investigators say the mercury was inside a garbage bin, obviously illegally dumped there. on monday the driver of the garbage truck picked up the waste and accidently spread it for blocks on their route back to the dump. it's unclear how much was spilled on the local streets. the county put up signs asking anyone walking in the contaminated area not to walk on the road, please stay on the sidewalks because the mercury has only been found in the roadways and gutters. the health department doesn't want anyone tracking this into

happy wednesday to you. it is 6:44, and as you're heading out in the east bay, the commute starts out with temperatures in the low 50s, and it's mostly cloudy. the sun will peek out by late morning and overall it's going to be a cool day, as we are headed for a warm-up just in time for the weekend. so we'll take a look at all of the changes in our microclimate forecast coming up. over here on the peninsula, traffic flows smoothly. palo alto, headlights heading north past university, we're looking at a smooth drive for 101 and 280. the build is kicking in in the south bay. getting to the peninsula, that may be an issue. we'll check on that coming up.
6:46 am
it is a quarter until 7:00 right now. this morning a proposal to crack down on sideshows in oakland is moving forward. late last night the oakland public safety committee passed a resolution that would impose fines on the illegal stunts and it comes after we saw some wild stunts over the weekend all caught on video. you saw even fires. >> "today in the bay"'s emma goss has more on that potential impact. this really could have an impact on public safety, emma. >> reporter: that's right. this resolution means that anyone who participates in a sideshow could be subject to a $1,000 fine, jail time or both. illegal sideshows have become a weekly issue, particularly in east oakland where streets and even highways are taken over on weekends by sideshows. you might recall over the weekend one car caught fire and a man in a mask was seen ramping into it in another car. oakland city council member noel gallo, whose district represents
6:47 am
east oakland, spoke passionately at last night's meeting to push for the resolution imposing fines. >> the bottom lines for those of us that live in challenged areas, we're investing millions and millions of dollars to make sure that the crosswalk that my child or family crosses is visible and it is clear and safe, but yet here comes these other groups at nighttime making their circles, burning out their tires, creating safety issues not only for themselves, but for those people that live there in the neighborhood. >> reporter: there's also a financial impact to the resolution. oakland's department of transportation estimates the cause of damage caused by sideshow activity at a typical intersection averages $16,000 per intersection to repair, and overall oakland police budget almost $2 million a year for sideshow enforcement, which typically costs more than what's
6:48 am
in their budget. the ordinance now goes to oakland city council for approval and is up for discussion next week. live in the newsroom, emma goss for "today in the bay." >> thank you. we do have breaking news this morning out of washington. >> that's right, scott mcgrew joins us now. new york congressman george santos has been charged with federal crimes. >> that's right. good morning to you. fraud and money laundering, theft of public funds, false statements. 13 counts. he's been arrested. he will make his first appearance this afternoon in federal court. prosecutors alleged he pocketed campaign funds for his own use, was on unemployment when he had a job that paid him $120,000 a year, and made material false statements to the house of representatives. lots more ahead live on the "today" show. on the other side of the capitol, california senior senator dianne feinstein has returned to washington after a
6:49 am
long, long absence. this is file video you're seeing here. we have not seen her in the capitol yet. influential democrats have been encouraging her to step down, citing concerns about her mental acuity and her health. she's been recovering from shingles at home in san francisco for months and has missed 91 votes. the most critical votes in the senate judiciary committee where republicans have been able to hold up some of president biden's choices for federal judges. feinstein's office says her absence didn't slow that process down, but that's not correct. >> house speaker kevin mccarthy met with the president tuesday at the white house. two sides report no progress on the debt ceiling. president biden wants to raise the debt ceiling to avoid default rgs mccarthy says he's only agree if biden agrees to cut back on current spending. here are the two sides shortly after that meeting. >> as i raised in the meeting, when they said, well, we're
6:50 am
going to cut and no spending more money, what the hell happens, if you cut, are you going to cut people at the border, are you going to cut agents at the border? we need more at the border, not less at the border. >> everybody in this meeting reiterated the positions they were at. i didn't see any new movement. the president said the staff should get back together, but i was very clear with the president, we have now just two weeks to go. >> you heard biden say he would be forced to cut spending on border patrol. that's not wrong, but it is inexact. the republicans are demanding cutbacks but haven't specified where and that's given biden some freedom to give examples of spending cuts that americans wouldn't like, cuts in the border patrol, veterans benefits, that kind of thing. now, far more worrisome than cuts, though, is if there is no agreement at all. economists warn if america does not raise its debt limit, it will default and the resulting recession will cost millions of

jobs almost immediately. back to you. >> thanks, scott. 6:50 right now. taking a live look outside, the iconic golden gate bridge. so many people travel from far and wide to view it. kari has a look at our forecast for today. and there are folks visiting, they're going to feel the cool temperatures we're used to. >> it's going to be breezy and cool, we usually see a layer of fog drifting over the golden gate bridge and we don't this morning because the clouds are a little higher up, but they're stretching farther inland and keeping temperatures down. we're only reaching into the upper 60s, with a high of 68 in san jose and los gatos and for the east bay we're feeling that nice breeze, in concord and antioch 68 degrees, compared to 62 we'll see in oakland today. some upper 50s for half moon bay, head to san mateo and a high of about 64 degrees, 67 for palo alto, and in san francisco
6:52 am
low 60s for today. our north bay temperatures will range from low 70s in santa rosa, to upper 50s near the coast. overall pretty good and still nice and mild. that is until the surge of warm air starts to build as high pressure develops across the region. we're going to have several days of some really extreme temperatures that will hit us very quickly going into the weekend, but then we'll see some changes. quite often when we see high pressure at this position, with its clockwise wind flow, it can sometimes push moister back into the bay area. so if we get thunderstorms developing over the sierra, that can travel across the central valley and give us a slight chance of thunderstorms as well by sunday into monday. with the heat building we're also looking for things to do, and some spots that may be milder, this weekend in sunnyvale we've got taste of the world and wine stroll happening and we'll have temperatures in
6:53 am
the mid-80s. you also may find yourself at the coastline with half moon bay temperatures in the mid-60s, the peak of the temperatures 65 on saturday. compare that to the 90 we'll see for the inland areas and sunshine, but at least we have a wide range in temperatures from the coastline to the hottest spots in the inland valleys. and then on mother's day, still pretty warm in the inland areas, but also an isolated chance of a thunderstorm. i wouldn't let that cancel any of your plans. once again, it's a very slight chance. in san francisco, it will go from the low 60s today to mid-70s in time for the weekend. mike, what's going on at the san mateo bridge? >> slowing westbound. and i noticed the flashing lights. that's a maintenance crew that often happens across the san mateo bridge in the opposite direction of your commute. but the flashing lights may be an additional distraction. that's probably why we saw some sudden slowing. things are smoothing out.
6:54 am
the speed sensors, it's not tremendously bad. up to the limit as you get toward the high-rise. dumbarton bridge looking all right. 880, great for a wednesday, mild slowing out of hayward and san leandro. the south bay kicking in, 85, 87, 101 around capitol expressway and toward oakland road and slowing more toward the airport, 237 with the build. that's the traditional push into the south bay and tr decisional for the east bay. the crash still slowing south 680. >> thank you. san mateo county is strengthening regulations meant to keep kids and young adults from buying tobacco. the board of supervisors passed an ordinance that increases fines for retail shops caught selling those products to anyone under the age of 21. it also inhibits sales permits within 100 feet of a school or park. >> we look at those stories we have had morning, including the
