6:10 am
quickly? >> yeah, i think it will burn off quicker than yesterday. let's get a look at the trend as we start with a mostly cloudy morning in morgan hill as well. look at our hour by hour forecast showing more sun peeking out around 8:00 to 9:00, and our warm-up happens late morning into the afternoon. still going to be a really nice day. for a lot of us, we can leave the air-conditioning off. it will be 73 for san martin. we are going to be in the mid-70s today in santa rosa. tomorrow the temperatures going up with more low 80s in the interior valleys. get ready to hit 90 in concord on saturday. mostly upper 80s for a lot of the bay area. we are going to be tracking that warm-up. mike also has a look at numbers going up. >> trying to help where we can. scouting it out with your help.

6:20 am
released in september of 2024. >> that's good casting, don't you think? >> i think so. especially with that, you know, maybe typecasting -- >> do you think the plot really matters? i want to see that movie. >> i'm in. >> kari, kari, kari. >> yeah, i just need black and white stripes, i guess. what is going on with our weather today. we have been talking about it really heating up. as we take a look at the clouds over san josé, this is what helps keep our temperatures down. we start out with clouds but will clear up more quickly than it did yesterday. we are seeing the skies part by 10:00, and by noon it's mostly sunny. sunny into the afternoon with temperatures in the upper 60s and a breezy wind. let's zoom into the south bay where we will head up to 71
6:21 am
degrees in los gatos and east san josé. in the east bay, looking at temperatures up to 71 in martinez. danville, upper 60s there. we're just seeing our temperatures going up a degree or two compared to yesterday, reaching 64 in san mateo. still in the upper 50s in half moon bay. we will see low 60s today in san francisco in the mission district. it's 63 degrees. for the north bay, up to 71 in novato, while ukiah will hit a high of 77 degrees. it's going to depend on where you are in terms of how much you are going to see those temperatures ramp up for the weekend. you can already see it on the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. as we get to next weekend, we could see the rain chances increase in the bay area where we could see above-normal rainfall as well as warm temperatures, which we already know we are heading towards.
6:22 am
it looks like our temperature outlook is going to be above average across much of the west, and definitely for parts of the pacific northwest. the warm air surging in high pressure hanging out for a few days. we will see it blocking this storm system, keeping it off the coast at least through the middle of next week while our temperatures will be warmer than normal. we will also see isolated thunderstorm chances from late mother's day into monday. overall, those chances are very slight and will not back the heat a little bit but we will see the peak of the temperatures on saturday and upper 80s on mother's day. san francisco, we will see mid-70s. just beautiful weather for saturday. mike, we were hoping to see recovery on the bay bridge. >> we do, kari. it was stacked up solid a few minutes ago and has started to move much better even though the crash is still on the chp grid with no update at fremont

warmth as our temperatures are in the low 50s, 51 degrees and cloudy. we will be at 57 degrees at 10:00, and then low 60s going into the early afternoon, eventually making it up to 68 degrees. still very comfortable. we will see mid-70s for santa rosa. then we look at tomorrow's high temperature and it cranks up a few more degrees reaching into the upper 70s for livermore and 83 in the north bay. we will talk more about that and the weekend forecast in just a few minutes, laura. >> thank you very much, kari. moving you forward in more than three years later the country is officially closing a chapter in its response to the covid-19 pandemic. hard to believe. as of today covid will no longer be held as a public health emergency. ginger conejero saab live in san francisco this morning. ginger, there's a new sub variant spreading as well.
6:33 am
do doctors think this is the right time to drop this emergency? >> reporter: laura, i spoke with dr. hong about this, and he believes this is the right time for us to get out of that emergency declaration, but he cautiously warns the public this doesn't mean we can take our foot off the gas just yet. dr. peter says it's important to stay up-to-date with vaccinations and boosters because it's still important to fight covid infections and to keep testing for covid if necessary. coverage of these tools will remain in effect for the next six months or so so changes will not be that immediate. >> this is all going to be unsettling over time, and the main point is that people shouldn't be worried about paying for paxlovid or vaccines at this moment because there are
6:34 am
plenty of supplies, so stay updated on your vaccines, and if you get infected and are vulnerable, make sure you know you have access to paxlovid. >> reporter: vaccines and treatments will remain available until at least november 11th here in california, and at-home tests may not be covered anymore, and you have to check with your insurance for that. the cdc is also changing the way they collect their data and the way they share their data about covid infections. all this comes as some people still continue to get sick with covid with the new covid variant making its presence felt here in the bay area. infections from this new variant rose to 12% currently, so the doctor says if you have not gotten a new booster since it
6:35 am
came out, it's time to get one. if you are 65 or older and are four months beyond your last booster, get boosted again. if you have kids six years or younger speak to your pediatrician, because doses may vary and it's important to get our young ones vaccinated as well. the big takeaway, dr. peter says, as we ease away from this emergency declaration, people still need to remain flexible because as we have seen in the past with different surges and the colder months ahead, things could change with the infections. >> and washing hands should be a way of life as well. an overnight train derailment in pennsylvania is under investigation. this happened around midnight in new castle, which is near the border of ohio and about an hour away from pittsburgh. nine railcars out of more than
6:36 am
200 went off the tracks. none of those cars were carrying hazardous materials. nobody has been reported injured in that case. back here at home, bart is facing a major financial dilemma because fewer people are choosing to ride and that comes as a new survey says maybe people don't feel safe anymore. emma gosk is live. this comes as there was another incident yesterday. >> reporter: yeah, an attack happened on the antioch-bound bart train going through the transbay tube. investigators say a man slashed a bart passenger on the back using a meat cleaver and then stole their backtrack. he fled the train and got off at the oakland stop and that's where officers were waiting and arrested him. riders tell us safety concerns have led them to seek rideshare
6:37 am
services over bart, especially at night. >> right now, like, nobody is using it. like, half of my friends don't want to come to the city or co-workers because of how unsafe it is. >> reporter: the bay area council recently surveyed 1,000 people from across bart service area about rider experiences and 79% said they feel more comfortable when uniformed police or security are also aboard. 90% of those polled said bart should prioritize cleaning stations and trains. bart has deployed more officers, and between 8 and 18 bart cops are supposediding the trains every day. >> scary for a lot of those people who truly need to depend on bart because of its availability and costs. thank you, emma.

it's going to be breezy and our temperatures will go down to the upper 50s by the end of the game. now also for the weekend plans, you are looking for warmer weather. head to pleasanton and take mom with you. there will be a row show happening at the senior center. it's all free. temperatures reaching in the upper 80s, and it's going to be warm so you are looking for something air-conditioning. maybe you could head to the coastline, santa cruz, upper 60s there for friday and saturday. a little cooler for sunday, and that's a live look at palisades, tahoe. that picture alone makes me want to pack up the car. it will be in the upper 60s there and more snow melting over the weekend. mike, are you seeing things recovering as expected?
6:41 am
>> yeah, pretty much on schedule. the crash cleared from the san francisco side of the bay bridge. we have hov lanes clearly showing an easy flow of traffic and the backup is building at the toll plaza for the rest of the lanes. no major shifts in the westbound commutes. if you are heading down to the east bay, the crash cleared to the shoulder. we have better speeds passing 92 for 880. and 880 past the coliseum, we will get slowing because of the a's game kari told you about. back to you. >> thanks, mike. frightening moments in a little league baseball game. still ahead on "today in the bay," nearby gunfire leads to panic. new video showing the confusing seconds before players and parents fled the field. just hours remain now for

good thursday morning. right now at 6:44, we can see the sun breaking through those clouds in walnut creek. we will see it clearing out fairly quickly. we are going from 52 right now to upper 60s at 1:00 and eventually reaching into the upper 70s for today. we are going to have a significant warm-up heading into the weekend. a look at that coming up in a few minutes. looking at the san mateo bridge. check this out. the service lane. watch. not sure what that motorcyclist is doing. i think he's sneaking into another lane. we will keep a watch on the commute. and then gunfire sent parents and children running from a little league baseball field. you can hear the faint pops in the surveillance video. investigators later determined it was seven rounds fired near a park outside of san diego.

initially nobody moved because it was so far away, but turns out one of the rounds landed on the field sending dirt flying. you saw it there quickly. people fled that field after putting two and two together. luckily nobody was struck and police so far have not made any arrests. >> that's scary. 6:45 right now. title 42 will prevent those who crossed the border from staying in america ends today. >> that's right, scott mcgrew, no choice but to let it expire because it's connected to covid. >> the biden administration had been trying to get rid of title 42 for sometime. it allowed migrants to come across asking for asylum to

wait. we're not going back to the catch and release system. there are brand-new tougher rules before people are admitted in. they generally require migrants to sign up online before showing up to the border and they apply for asylum in whatever country they pass through first. that's usually mexico. a vast majority of people we see at the border have not done that and therefore will not be admitted. we are seeing a record number of people at the border anyway, some perhaps trying to get in before the tougher rules take effect, and some perhaps don't understand there are new rules. also keep in mind up until recently, showing up at the border unannounced and asking for asylum because the legal way

6:52 am
going into tomorrow, can you see it's already going to be 80s in some spots, and even some mid-80s for far inland areas. mostly mid-70s for much of the inner bay from fremont to mountain view, 75. in novato, 77 degrees. let's take it to saturday, because this is when we start to see a few 90s popping up on the map with a lot of upper 80s for many of our inland valleys, especially in the north bay, and east bay down to the south bay. the warm air is surging as high pressure builds. we are going to see the high pressure in control for a while and actually pushing back the storm system off the coast. if we get storms developing over the sierra, there's a slight chance it could move into our area as well by the end of the weekend. take a look at concord. we are going from the low 70s for highs today to low 80s to 90 degrees and still pretty hot on
6:53 am
