5.2 magnitude shock around 3:00 this morning. our seismograph picked up the shaking there. we want to say good morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. >> this quake comes after a 5.2 magnitude yesterday in the same area, they hit in plumas county in a rural part of the sierra. we've got video from a restaurant at plumas pines resort the exact moment it hit. glass few off the shelves, shattering on the floor. outside cameras caught the initial jolt as well. then it stopped suddenly. the owners assessing all that damage. >> we noticed that there were drips coming about where we're standing from all of the liquor bottles that broke upstairs in our storage room. >> what a cleanup. no injuries have been reported for either of those quakes. now to our other top stories this morning. all eyes on the southern border. this is new video from overnight

at in arizona. the covid-era policy known as title 42, which allowed immigration officials to quickly turn away migrants at the u.s./mexico border is over. >> "today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live along the border fence in el paso, texas. what is happening now? >> reporter: good morning. so far it's been a quiet morning here in el paso. i'm standing outside of gate 40 between el paso and the mexico border. we've seen law enforcement coming in and out of that gate. we haven't seen any migrants. but this city is preparing for an expected influx as the biden administration warns that the border is not open just because title 42 is over. the end of title 42 brings the beginning of a new wave of concerns about migrants entering the u.s. it's been a long journey for this woman and her family.

she says she traveled through seven countries before crossing the southern border to el paso, texas. >> translator: my dreams are many, but first is to give a better future for my kids. >> reporter: thousands of migrants are expected to make similar journeys. republicans blasted the white house. >> every american needs to say to the biden administration, you were elected to enforce the law, enforce the law. >> reporter: the biden administration is defending its record, saying it's hiring more border patrol agents, increasing the number of people processing paperwork, and enforcing tougher consequences for unlawful entry. >> what they are going to encounter at our border is border patrol agents who will take them into custody and remove them. >> reporter: federal agencies are also working closely with border communities. and encouraging migrants to take legal pathways into the u.s. or

face consequences. for this 22-year-old mother, the trek was worth the hardship. >> translator: since getting here, i have the hope and even more faith that i can accomplish everything i want. >> reporter: officials are holding their breath, while migrants are holding out hope. and the aclu filed a legal challenge against the biden administration, saying the new restrictions places vulnerable asylum seekers in danger. >> so much going on down there. a lot of heartache for people. thanks for the latest. people from the bay area are trying to help those in need. many migrants are attempting to reach out to other sectors that aren't at the border to help, like the hispanic chamber of commerce in san francisco. the office said it's fielding now three to five calls a day. the legal director for the center and gender of refugee

studies is now in tijuana. she says many people are confused about the new biden policies. >> i didn't see any lines forming or individuals at the ports of entry i went to, so i went around to different shelters today and what i saw were people who are extremely depressed and confused and really just trying to make sense of very confusing and unjust policies. >> in the south bay, local immigration advocates also say they are gearing up for an influx of migrants who will end up there. the rapid response network of santa clara county is working to find temporary housing, food and legal assistance for migrants when needed. new developments this morning on the stabbing in the east bay, an east bay woman is now in custody. police say this all stemmed from a domestic violence incident in pittsburg at an apartment complex on power avenue. this is not too far from parkside elementary school. the man that was stabbed in the

chest yesterday later died. police say they are still investigating those circumstances of what led up to the stabbing. 6:04 on your friday morning. the sun is coming up over the bay area and things are going to warm up. kari has been warning us about it. she's been tracking this weekend warm-up for us, just in time for mother's day. >> and, kari, you and laura bringing the sunshine. >> yeah, we found it. >> that and the warriors. >> that, too. >> we're going to have some great and sunny weather throughout the weekend. it's also going to be warming up a lot more quickly in the valleys. if you're in a spot like san francisco, you're keeping the nice and mild weather. it's a clear start this morning there, and we'll see a few clouds drifting by through 8:00. and then we'll become mostly sunny heading into noon, but look at the trend here, going from low 50s to low 60s. that's going to be a big difference compared to what we'll see in some of the inland valleys, reaching into the low 80s, like morgan hill headed for

we're going to call out bond fair on grant street. it's friday, a lighter flow of traffic and we were able to recover for highway 4. it's cleared back to the normal lighter friday. this alert has been called on eastbound 580 coming through livermore heading toward the altamont pass, just past livermore avenue. we have a vehicle in the middle of the roadway and a couple lanes are blocked. you see the majority of the traffic is actually coming westbound. eastbound, that's the lighter flow heading past the camera. that's an alert, not presenting much of a slowdown. back to you. >> thanks, mike. nurses across the world today are being celebrated. may 12th is international nurses day. here in the u.s. it culminates national nurses week, a time to show extra appreciation for those in that profession. >> they deserve all the accolades. this week is a time to amplify the concerns of a job that was hit hard during the pandemic. musk said he would replace himself as ceo of twitter. now, that would give him more time to think about cars, maybe. musk tweeted that she would be starting in about six weeks. he also said he would hold onto a lot of the ceo job, including product, software and systems. the she part helps narrow it down, unfortunately not by 50%. it didn't take long for people to guess. the "wall street journal" was the first quoting people familiar with the matter who said it was nbc executive linda yaccarino. that makes sense. yaccarino runs advertising, twitter is desperate for advertising. she also hosted musk at an advertising conference in miami very recently, despite the concerns of national advertisers who left twitter over concerns about musk. just before the conference, an article was published quoting internal emails from executives, places like mcdonald,

albertson's and others raising worries about musk appearing on stage. the head of advertising at mcdonald talked about twitter's irresponsibility, the head of colgate said she was excited for the success of the conference and mindful of the harmful and often racist rhetoric of elon musk. now, nbc's news division has reached out to yaccarino, who works for nbcuniversal corporate, a parent company of this tv station, but has not given a response to the possibility that she will be the new twitter ceo. >> other news, the latest measure of how happy people are at work shows people are very happy. higher job satisfaction rates. 62% say we are satisfied with our jobs. this makes a lot of sense given the past economic conditions. there were so many openings, that people were shuffling all over the place getting the job they wanted.

if you're looking for beautiful flowers, the flower mart in san francisco may be the best place to go. look at all those beautiful colors. now, the retailers there are going to get first choice and then later today the general public can go in and get beautiful flowers. one of the managers there saying it's unpredictable, because it can get busy really fast as people try to get the flowers last minute. >> nobody gives you an order early. they show up, want to touch it, feel it, get a sense of the quality, find the best prices around the market. a lot of people wait until the end and the day they need the product, they grab it. >> the market is open to the public at 8:00 this morning and then again at 7:00 tomorrow morning. it will be closed on mother's day, which is sunday. >> parking is limited. i have history with it in the area. that market has a lot of local growers in the area.

i see a little of your daughter in there, too. so cute. >> yes. >> my kids don't look like me at all. i look like the nanny. >> beautiful eyes. >> the better to see you with. it's going to be a nice weekend, more of those beautiful tributes. just sharing the love. we're going to see temperatures heating up today as we take a live look outside in dublin. we're starting out with a layer of clouds sliding in for a little bit. it's going to clear up more quickly than we've seen in days past. so we're going from upper 40s, our normal cool start, to a trend that will warm up by late morning into the afternoon. we'll be at 73 degrees at 1:00 today, and eventually reaching 77 there. so you'll notice that it's still going to be fairly comfortable today, but just a little bit warmer than it was yesterday as we start that warming trend. in martinez we're headed for 80 degrees and 83 in santa rosa, while san francisco is only going to be in the mid-60s.

the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and we can see how hot it's going to be for the middle of the weekend into sunday, and then gradually it does start to come back down. we're headed up for 83 in hayward tomorrow. air-conditioning on full blast in san martin, reaching 91, as well as in los gatos, and 91 in martinez with napa reaching 90 degrees and mid-70s in san francisco. it's going to be very warm on mother's day along the coastline, san francisco, that's where you'll still have some mild weather. if your weekend plans take you to central valley to visit mom, you're going to have temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. so just be really careful out there and you might want to plan some indoor activities there. we're also going to see high pressure continue as we go into the next several days. but as it moves off farther to the east, we're going to see that heat easing up just a little bit. but along the coastline, our sea

surface temperatures, we are seeing slight warming. then we head to the equatorial pacific where we look for large-scale trends, and we're seeing a lot more warming there near the peru and equator coast and ecuador coast. as we head into the next several months, we see the potential for an el nino. we are expecting a moderate event. we've had about 26 events since the 1950s, and it could possibly mean we could get slightly above average rainfall. that could be good news. it's definitely going to be hot. we're feeling the heat already as we look at our short-term forecast for the weekend. our inland valleys reaching 90 degrees and some low to mid-80s throughout much of next week. san francisco going from 69 to 75 tomorrow. mike, you said the metering lights are active at the bay bridge. >> i did. the metering lights are different than the volume of

going to stay nice and mild. let's head to antioch where it's breezy, temperatures in the mid-50s. it's also clear. as we go throughout the morning, we can see the trend heading up ward going to mid-70s at 1:00, eventually into the low 80s today. not quite uncomfortable yet, but we are starting that warming trend for later today. temperatures ranging anywhere from 64 in half moon bay to 86 in fairfield. we can see it jumping up another 10 degrees tomorrow, and it's going to be hot in the valleys, but once again, in san francisco and half moon bay, that's where you find those milder temperatures. so we'll get a look ahead to the rest of the weekend and some e rents going on around the bay area in a few minutes. >> we look forward to it. developing right now on the peninsula, a 91-year-old decorated war veteran thrown to the ground in a bus stop robbery, now fighting back in his own way. he's speaking out. >> and he should be, too.

"today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live this morning. he's sharing his story with the hope that it can lead to some changes. i just can't believe this level of elder abuse in our community. >> reporter: it's really sad and unfortunate. we're going to share more of those details about how he was robbed. he's sharing his story, he's also sharing a picture. you'll see that in just a minute, about when he was serving for this country, a 91-year-old who was awarded the bronze medal for his bravery. bravery that quickly came back up when he was put to the test during this robbery. it was sunday afternoon and roger frey was headed home from best buy. he says a man on a bike snatched his laptop from the back of his wheelchair as he waited for a bus. roger says he held onto the man's bike as others called police, but that's when he was thrown to the ground. the suspect took off and roger was left injured, with no laptop, which is what helps him communicate with his friends and

family. >> i said, hey, give it back to me, and i went after him. he was pounding on me. >> you know, i understand in the climate we live in that people are afraid, didn't know if the person had a gun or a knife. but when roger said that nobody came to his aid until after the person left, it just really angered me. >> reporter: now, samtrans says it's investigating the incident, but so far there have been no arrests and there were no cameras to catch the crime. something roger wants to change because he believes bus stations should have cameras and security. he says if they were there, this may not have happened. it could also save other people have having this happen to them. roger has had a bit of an

unlucky string of luck with that laptop recently. he had it stolen from his home and then now being robbed from his wheelchair. he hopes that by sharing his story, he also shows other people that he's going to not back down. he's not going to be left afraid after these incidents. >> nor should he, but it really does need to stop. >> it does. unacceptable. >> thank you, ginger. happening today, a former san leandro officer charged in the deadly walmart shooting is set to return to court. jason fletcher is out on bail, this is after pleading not guilty in connection to that shooting, which happened in april of 2020. this is is inside the san leandro walmart store. security shows 33-year-old steven taylor holding a baseball bat after a brief altercation, and police say fletcher first used a taser, then deadly force, which prosecutors later called excessive. taylor's supporters are promising to rally today outside the courthouse. the trial is not expected to happen before next year.

new details on how the lasting effects from covid are impacting child development. a professional for profit group called the american speech language hearing association recently polled speech and hearing specialists and say about one-third of all hearing specialists are seeing a greater number of children with delayed diagnosis of hearing loss compared to before the pandemic. in the meantime, more than eight in ten speech specialists report more children with emotional or behavioral difficulties. about the same number report more children with language disorders and social communication issues. they say early diagnosis is essential. >> 80% of a child's brain develops by age 3, so the earlier that you can intervene with any speech and language delays or hearing difficulties, the better. there's no doubt about it. i also want parents to realize it's never too late. it's never too late. if you have any concerns about

it will be cool as we go deeper into the evening as temperatures drop into the upper 50s by 9:00 to 10:00. if you're looking for warmer weather, head over to pleasanton tomorrow between 2:00 and 5:00, there will be the rose show at the senior center and this is free and a great event for moms. it's going to be in the upper 80s during the middle of the day. slightly cooler for sunnyvale, the taste of the world and wine stroll happening tomorrow, and it's going to be in the mid-80s during the middle of the day. as we go into the evening, it's about 83 degrees. not bad. if you like the milder weather, maybe heading to the coastline, santa cruz will be 73 today. up to 79 tomorrow, and sunday will be in the mid-70s. yosemite is going to have sunshine throughout the weekend with 70s throughout the weekend. you're seeing a predictable commute? >> it's predictably light right now. we'll talk about some slowing, but 101 didn't even have the first burst.

each answered a variety of questions before voters around the state. >> during covid when we did extend the child tax credits, what happened was 50% of children who were living below the poverty line really had a pathway out of poverty. so the child tax credit is extremely important. >> tackling the housing affordable crisis will be one of my very top priorities in the u.s. senate. and democrats, democratic leadership doesn't seem to grapple with the problems of housing. they don't get that there's a huge federal need. >> the third major contender, l.a. county house member adam schiff did not take part, due to a scheduling conflict. incumbent dianne feinstein has already said she will not seek re-election. >> feinstein, meanwhile, returning to the capitol to vote on president biden's pick for federal judges. >> scott mcgrew, there was worry she might never return. >> yes, she's talked about not coming back in the next term, but this current term lasts

until 2025, and it's all hers. senator feinstein has been out for months dealing with a case of the shingles and she's on the crucial senate judiciary committee where republicans were able to hold up some of biden's choices for the courts because she and her vote weren't there. with her return, the committee quickly banged out three approvals to send the nominations to the full senate. >> a federal judge in florida has said no to a biden plan that would allow qualified migrants who are asking for asylum to be released into the united states without a court date. immigration officials had come up with that idea as a way of reducing crowding at immigration centers on the border. as you well know, there's an overwhelming number of people trying to cross legally. >> as we were discussing yesterday, title 42 may be gone, but there are still rules like title 8 that are more severe. many of the new rules are designed to prevent as many

migrants as possible from even taking the first step into the system, requiring appointments and requiring migrants to apply for asylum in whatever country they pass through first. >> if anyone arrives at our southern border after midnight tonight, they will be presumed ineligible for asylum and subject to steeper consequences for unlawful entry, including a minimum five-year ban on re-entry and potential criminal prosecution. >> homeland secretary mayorkas will be on the "today" show coming up at 7:00. the white house and the speaker of the house have postponed today's meeting about the debt ceiling. insiders take that as good news, that there has been progress in talks between staffers and there's no point in having a meeting until that process works itself out. house speaker kevin mccarthy spoke about the issue from the capitol. >> the do-nothing democrats must not continue to repeat this pattern on the debt limit.

tomorrow will be the 100th day since i first sat down with the president on february 1st to identify a problem, to know the deadline would be coming. >> the u.s. senate, meantime, is scheduled to recess starting late next week for memorial day. they get ten days off for memorial day. but that may not happen as the deadline, june 1st, draws closer. >> thanks so much, scott. this morning i want you to grab your popcorn as the curtain rises for one of the largest asian american film festivals playing out in san francisco and oakland. the 41st annual caamfest rolled out the red carpet. the main attraction, the stars of "joyride" which follows friends exploring their asian american heritage. the film's actors called last night a major moment in their careers. >> it's such a big deal, opening a film fest, and one that

focuses around asian art and it's at the castle theatre. i'm a queer woman, this is a big deal in a lot of ways. so "joyride" is such a special film that's going to blow people away. >> this is also the first time in more than three years that caamfest is being held entirely in person. it's going to run through may 21st at various theatres. trending this morning, how about this mother's day celebration for a texas mom? she's going to don the cap and gown alongside not only her husband, but their daughter as well. all three are graduating from texas lutheran university. robin adams is earning a master's degree in accounting, her daughter ashley majoring in education and father greg majoring in business. mom and dad were pursuing their degrees elsewhere and transferred to join their daughter after visiting her during the administrations process. she's, like, oh, hi, mom and dad. >> i told scott, i used to get all bent when my parents would

[ laughter ] well, taking it outside today, it's going to be a nice, sunny day. >> it's going to be sunny, but we are still seeing clouds to start out. all of that clears out fairly quickly. let's head to martinez. it's 53 degrees now and we are seeing clouds through about 8:00. after that, sunshine the rest of the day and our temperatures will be warming up. we're looking at quite a bit of a warm-up, especially for later this afternoon. but not too bad. we're up to 80 in martinez today. we're starting that warming trend today, but it still will be a very pleasant afternoon for many of our microclimates. and still cool for the coastline. san francisco reaching into the mid-60s. upper 70s for novato and low 80s for concord as well, down to the south county. tomorrow when the heat really starts to feel unbearable during the afternoon, we're turning up

the air-conditioning in livermore, reaching 91 degrees. 92 in morgan hill and 93 in santa rosa. but the hottest temperature, 97 in fairfield. but check that out, the difference between there and half moon bay, where it's going to be in the low 70s. so still pretty nice there. about the same on sunday and we're starting to see some of those peninsula temperatures coming down just a bit, as that high pressure starts to back off. it's also going to be pushing off toward the east. it's really not going anywhere. so the high heat will continue throughout much of next week. and we're also going to see some more of that very warm weather. speaking of warm, we're also looking at our sea surface temperatures along the california coastline. but what affects our overall weather patterns and the trends is the equatorial pacific and where we see those sea surface temperatures there. we are on el nino watch and we're expecting a moderate el nino event for the fall.

as we look at temperatures, moderate strength, we've had about 29 el nino events since 1950, and in terms of how that affects our rainfall, we typically get slightly above average rainfall, so that could be good news for the upcoming fall. let's look at something a little closer to home and closer in terms of time, too. we're going to see temperatures in the low 80s today in napa, but upper 80s tomorrow. we do see it cooling off in some spots for sunday and then still pretty warm through next week. so the warm weather continues and we'll also be watching out for a slight chance of isolated storms. mike, you were looking at a crash. >> a crash or something going on on the bay bridge. it looked like mid-span there was a report. i'm watching through the haze and we see traffic continuing to move smoothly. so far it's moving smoothly past treasure island. there may be a disabled vehicle or a crash closer to the toll plaza. i'm sorting out details.

we welcome you back. we are moving you forward as we take a look at the top stories this morning, including that breaking news. several more early-morning aftershocks. >> in the last 30 minutes or so there was a 3.0 aftershock that follows a 5.2 magnitude aftershock about 3:00 this morning. our seismograph picked up the shaking. this comes after a 5.5 magnitude yesterday in the same area.

the quakes hit in plumas county near lake almano. we've got video the exact moment it hit. glass fell off shelves. this camera caught the initial jolt as well. no injuries have been reported. >> a 91-year-old decorated war veteran speaking out after he was targeted in a robbery by a bus station. roger frey says a mugger snatched his laptop from the back of his wheelchair as he waited for a bus. the bronze medal recipient says he tried to hold onto the bike as long as he could, as others called police. that's when he got thrown to the ground. samtrans says that it has no surveillance cameras in that area. this is where it all happened. frey hopes by speaking out that it can lead to some changes. >> state school superintendent tony thurman already deeply involved in trying to resolve
