5:04 am
ainsley. >> reporter: good morning, peter. we are in downtown el paso outside sacred heart church where migrants have been sleeping on the streets for days. many apprehended by police and released due to overcrowding. friday marks the first day of u.s. era immigration policy with the lifts of title 42. the public health order that caused people to turn back to mexico. more migrants are expected to stay and try the chance of seeking asylum. dhs officials do not see a fresh spike in crossings yesterday. just a continuation of the surge from last week. more than 60,000 undocumented migrants crossed in the last three days. the majority of those illegally. the biden administration is now facing another battle over immigration in courts where the aclu asked the judge to block a policy to make it harder for migrants to claim asylum. a florida court placed a

temporary hold on the border patrol to release into the u.s. without a court date and without the ability to track in country. peter. >> julia, thank you. >> we want to bring in the assistant secretary of border and immigration policy at the department of homeland security. mr. nunes-nieto, good morning. >> kristen and peter, thank you. >> let's start off with what we are seeing since title 42 has been lifted. throughout the week, we saw record numbers of migrants trying to cross the border. what can you tell us about the number of migrants trying to get in in the 24 hours since title 42 was lifted? >> so what i can tell you is since title 42 was lifted at midnight on friday morning, you know, we have not seen any increase in irregular migration at the border.
5:06 am
we believe we have seen a decrease. encounters are at an elevated level and we continue to monitor the situation. >> do you have specific numbers for the 24 hours since it was lifted? >> you know, it takes a couple days for us to really figure out what happened as we process non-citizens encountered. we believe the extensive preparations we have taken the last two years which include surging thousands of personnel to the border, including activity military troops as well as increasing holding capacity at the border is helping us manage through what we always knew would be a challenge in the weeks leading up to title 42 and days immediately afterwards. >> mr. secretary, let's ask about the challenges are you facing before the administration policies related to the expiration of title 42 going
5:07 am
into effect. julia reported blocking the administration from releasing migrants into the country when they are in detention centers which are overcrowded. the administration said that is a harmful ruling and it is likely to appeal. why should migrants who come to the country illegally be released into the country without a court date set? >> well, what i can tell you is every migrant we encounter gets vetted robustly against all national security and public safety databases. when we see the influx of migration, administrations from both parties relied on this use of the authority known as parole authority to release non-citizens from custody more quickly than otherwise possible than a full notice to appear process. that is, frankly, for the safety and well being, not just of the migrants, but frontline personnel and overcrowded
5:08 am
facilities. we believe that is a harmful ruling. we will be seeking to address that in the courts. >> mr. secretary, while you are waiting for the legal process to play out, what will you do with the migrants in overcrowded centers? there is just not room for them. >> again, i think the slight decrease we have seen yesterday helped us decompress facilities on the border. we are in better shape today than two or three days ago. we have, over the last two years, you know, streamlined processes in the facilities to move people more quickly through border patrol facilities and either to detention facilities or to their immigration facilities or back to mexico. i would note that yesterday, we saw for the first time, the return of hundreds of non-mexican citizens of
5:09 am
venezuela and cuba returned to mexico under titl 8 authorities. that is the first time that happened. >> the removal flights cannot go back to venezuela. venezuelans have to be directed back to mexico. let me ask about the border situation. communities like el paso and others have been overwhelmed by the influx. they have some much burden here. it is not just of the border communities, but other cities in the united states describe a burden as well. including new york city. the mayor there, eric adams, accused the biden administration of quote turning its back on the big apple. what do you say to him and to other leaders, many democrats, say the administration is not doing enough to help them deal with this surge? >> so, we work extremely closely with new york city and other municipali municipalities. el paso and ngos.
5:10 am
we have a grant program through fema to support the ngos and state and local municipalities. we recognize that the money has been appropriated for that purpose is simply not enough. i would say that these are the costs of a fundamentally broken immigration system. we have not modernized our laws in decades. we have seen the surges of migrations happen for going on 20 years under administrations of both parties, frankly. until and unless congress works in a bipartisan way, we will continue to see this challenge on the border. >> we know it is a busy time. we appreciate you joining us, mr. secretary. thank you so much. >> thank you very much. >> the crisis at the border will be a central issue in the 2024 presidential campaign. former president trump and florida governor desantis making duelling appearances in iowa
5:11 am
today. it comes as desantis is showing the clearest signs he could be ready to formally join the fray. we have ground in iowa this morning. good morning >> reporter: peter, good morning. governor ron desantis will pay the second visit to the hawkeye state as nbc news has new reporting on a move that is the sure sign he will enter the 2024 presidential race. two sources tell nbc news his political staff is set to move into a campaign office on monday now, why does that matter? because of rules around spending, that means he has 15 days to file paper work to run for president. the clock is ticking for the man who is a north star of sorts for republicans looking to turn the page on trump. while he has been lagging behind
5:12 am
trump in the polls, the ground game in iowa is promising. nbc news reporting that the gop fund-raiser he will attend tonight sold out which is a rarity for the gop state event the florida governor is popular on the road selling out venues consistently and breaking fund raising records. on the other side of the state, of course, the former president will hold a rally in des moines tonight. in the two months since former president trump paid a visit to iowa, a lot has changed. he faces criminal charges in new york and found libel for sexual abuse and defamation yet, trump's poll numbers are the highest since his 2024 campaign announcement. still significantly higher than desantis in national polls peter, iowa has the potential to make or break a campaign it is no wonder that the hawkeye
