chaotic scene that has been lingering for hours. >> and not so friendly for a family, multiple fights break out at a popular county fair. quick action by organizers trying to make sure the event ended safely. >> also, a high-stakes meeting in washington. we'll take you live to the nation's capitol where president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy are gearing up to make a last-ditch effort to reach an agreement in the debt limit battle. this is "today in the bay." thanks for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have a lot to get to this morning. first we want to get you to breaking news out of the south bay. >> we know at least three pedestrians are dead following two separate crashes on highway 101 in sunnyvale, both in different directions. 101, this is between lawrence

expressway and north fair oaks avenue. the first happened in the northbound lanes about 12:30 this morning, meanwhile the southbound crash involved several vehicles and investigators believe it may have happened as cars tried to avoid a body that was ejected from a vehicle in the northbound crash. at this point everything is still under investigation and it's still not clear how many cars in all were involved. for now, both directions are still closed. bob redell will have a live report from the scene. right now we go to mike inouye tracking the potential impact on the commute. this could last a while. >> i believe it will. look at the scene, they're still working on what's going on inside the vehicle. we have evidence markers, yellow cones out there, so clearly this is still a scene which they have to gather more information. i'm going to step into this live picture as we look at these vehicles right here. someone is looking in this area and we have the traffic in the opposite direction.

as kris said, both directions of highway 101 are shut down in this part of sunnyvale. i would like to take you to the maps. we're talking about most of the south bay. north of santa clara into the sunnyvale area between fair oaks and lawrence expressway, the two major roadways where that are cut off right now. it sounds like more evidence needs to be gathered and they may need sunlight. if that's the case, we're looking at a number of hours and possibly beyond that as they continue the investigation. it sounds like traffic is slowing down, forced off of the northbound side at lawrence expressway, off the southbound side coming into san jose at the north fair oaks. either way, you're going to want to make your way south to dwayne. you'll have to snake back and forth and make your way down to the larger roadway that connects those two lawrence expressway and north fair oaks.

with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kris and marcus. prosecutors say let this case be an example of what can go horribly wrong if the proper precaution is not taken with silicone injections. the woman accused in this, vivian gomez, is facing two felony counts for manslaughter and practicing medicine without a license after a popular kim kardashian look-alike model died from botched silicone injections. san mateo county district attorney wagstaffe says the suspect, gomez, was on social media and they agreed to meet up at a hotel room on april 19th so gomez could administer at least a couple of silicone injections. gomez is an unlicensed cosmetologist and using injectable silicone for body contouring is not approved by

the fda. >> we know two shots were administered to our victim and she immediately started having a negative reaction to it, then went into convulsions. 911 was called and they rushed her to peninsula hospital in burlingame. unfortunately, within a day, she tied from those injections. >> reporter: now, prosecutors say gomez caught her flight back to florida after that meeting at a bay area hotel. she was eventually arrested at the airport. the san mateo da says this case is a reminder that people should not let anyone inject anything into their body that is not medically approved. he says some common sense was lost in this and, consequently, a life was lost as well. the arraignment takes place at 1:30 this afternoon. in redwood city, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> so sad. thank you very much. antioch's contra costa county fair hardly went as

planned over the weekend. the problem started saturday when there were a series of large fights involving teenagers, some of whom put those fights up on social media. organizers closed the fair early that night and then on closing day, yesterday, the fair required minors to be accompanied by parents if they were going to be admitted after 5:00 p.m. we spoke by phone with one security worker who described saturday's chaos. >> i think there was probably, i don't know, a dozen fights at least. large fights. we're talking multiple people, multiple kids, all middle school kids, and it just got way out of hand. >> organizers did not issue a comment to nbc bay area, but on its facebook page they posted the intention to ensure that the fair remains a safe and fun environment and that's why they decided to require chaperones. happening later today, vice president kamala harris is making a return to the bay area.

her trip starts with a visit in the white house has poured close to $300 million in u.s. semiconductor manufacturing. today she visits applied material, which last year announced plans to build the next generation research and development center. the tour is expected to get under way at noon. this morning even more help is on the way to ukraine and the russian invasion, to fight against the russian invasion. president joe biden and european allies are promising $375 million in aid to the war-torn country. the announcement comes following ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy's surprise appearance at the g7 summit. now, closer to home, the debt ceiling showdown is reaching a pivotal moment today. >> president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy will meet face to face without another congressional leader at the table. out using the 14th amendment to raise the debt ceiling on his own, but adds it would likely become tied up in a legal battle. >> i'm sure one people don't want to see. let's take a look out at san francisco this morning. no major fog there, yet. maybe it's on its way. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> keep the coastal areas a little cool for today and we're also seeing clouds stretching inland, but overall no issues with visibility. let's get a look at our high temperatures for today, it's going to be much like it was over the weekend. if you're near the coast and parts of the inner bay, it's going to be cool, very mild for parts of the east bay, as well as the north bay. but it's a little bit warm compared to what we have coming our way for the rest of the week, reaching 82 in san jose, 88 in fairfield, while san francisco will stay in the 60s for this afternoon.

we'll talk about the cooldown ahead coming up. mike has been tracking one major hot spot in the bay area. that's right, both direction of highway 101 are closed. everything else throughout silicon valley are just fine. this is a deadly crash, multiple deaths related to this crash on 101 between fair oaks and lawrence expressway. both directions are blocked off for the investigation. the alternate is dwayne -- duane avenue. you still have to get to the on-ramp. this is highway 101 between fair oaks and lawrence expressway, closed until further notice. the rest of the bay looks nice as far as the early drive. highway 4 fine, there is a crash as you head up toward the carquinez bridge.

to head out, it is a clear start, temperatures nice and cool, low 50s, it's going to be a nice morning. we'll head for the mid-70s at noon and we'll talk about a cooler weekend coming up. we're looking at palo alto. 101 moves smoothly both directions in palo alto just north of university avenue. in sunnyvale, both directions of 101 are stopped. you cannot access through certain areas. we'll talk about the closure, the re-route and i'll give you the latest as far as any opening times and estimates they have. good morning. very happy monday to you. wall street, surprisingly, unruffled by the problems in washington, where we are that much closer to a historic default. meta has been fined a staggering $1.3 billion for breaking the rules set by the european union that it had to store eu citizens' data in the eu. applied materials will hold an

event today where it will give details about a $4 billion research chip plant in sunnyvale. applied makes the machines that make the chips. vice president kamala harris will be there hammering home the point that it wouldn't be possible without the bipartisan chips act signed into law by president biden, providing money for chip factories to be built in the u.s. today's announcement is a big deal, jobs, a factory three football fields long and research here. tesla says it will roll out updated software today for its autopilot that will be more aggressive, less conservative. >> look at that. wow. all the way to a stop. >> elon musk saying teslas would be less conservative on narrow roads like this one where a tesla panicked stopped where a car came at it in the other lane, the tesla not

understanding the situation a human driver would. tesla has been trying to strike a balance between safety and following the rules like a person driving would, for instance, for a while you could set the tesla to almost come to a stop at stop signs, a california stop, the way that californians stop. but it gets criticism for that and for things like this, not stopping for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. that you have to do. we can slow this video down. you can see the stop for pedestrian sign right there in the middle. a woman crossing on the left. ironically the person who posted this praised the self-driving car for passing through the crosswalk, saying the car had enough time to get by before the person crossed the lane. that's not how the law works. >> and the so-called ticketmaster bill has made its way to the california senate floor for a vote that would prohibit exclusivity between the

and 85 in livermore, about the same in concord. for the north bay we're in the low to mid-80s today. if you go to san francisco, definitely cooler with some upper 60s for today with breezy winds, and a cooldown continues as we go throughout the week. as you're taking a look at that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, this will be the warmest day before we see cooler temperatures and also stronger winds moving in. we'll also see a mostly cloudy sky tomorrow, so in concord we'll reach 77 degrees, and 71 in hayward, while san mateo will see a high of about 66 degrees. on wednesday it's also watching those temperatures in many spots. upper 60s and low to mid-70s as you make your way into the valleys. as we go throughout the week, warm air continues, but we'll start to see cooler air dipping in and also that chance of daily showers and thunderstorms, especially over the sierra, and areas just to our north. if you saw the clouds in the distance over the weekend, we'll continue to see those clouds.

those are actually really tall thunderstorms that are developing over the sierra that we can see all the way to the bay area, because it is clear. so as we take a look at concord and some of our inland areas, look at the cooldown this week. we're going from 84 today to upper 60s by the end of the week, and the weekend is looking really nice with highs in the low 70s. if you're making plans to get outside, the cooler air will come in and hang out for quite a while. mike, you've been tracking that major crash in sunnyvale. >> this is what's going on, kari, because we have a live camera at the location. we can do that because 101 is closed in both directions. still working on at least one of the vehicles. there are a number of vehicles there. multi-vehicle crash. both directions closed. we're talking about the area between lawrence expressway and fair oaks. southbound slows a bit. you can use duane as your alternate and get back on at

right now at 5:30, a deadly crash on a south bay freeway. details on the victims and just how long this crash will last. it's been a chaotic scene throughout the morning. that investigation is still going. this is "today in the bay." busy morning on the roads out there. thank you so much for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we want to get right to bob redell live on highway 101. bob, are you getting a sense yet of how many cars are involved and how this all happened? >> reporter: yes, we are. good morning to you, kris and marcus. we're on northbound highway 101, which is shut down in both directions between the lawrence expressway and fair oaks avenue. we know there are at least four vehicles in the northbound direction that were involved in

this collision and two more on the southbound. this happened around 12:30 this morning. we know three people were killed and there are a number of chp officers on the scene collecting evidence. you can also see the people in the orange, those are caltrans workers trying to assess the damage. what happened, we know one vehicle hit the center divide and we believe what happened is debris from that center divide, the concrete went into the southbound direction, causing cars on that side to collide. then there was a chain reaction on the northbound side. we know there are at least six vehicles involved. it's hard to tell with the sun not completely up yet, but we know there's at least six and we know, unfortunately, there's three people that are dead. as far as the estimated time of reopening, a chp sergeant said it will be hours and it will be well into the morning commute. so we could be looking after 7:00, 8:00, possibly 9:00. we just don't know yet. and, again, so if you are

commuting in this area, if you're heading southbound on 101, you're going to have to get off at fair oaks avenue, and if you're heading northbound, you will have to get off at lawrence expressway and get back on at a side street. reporting live along northbound 101 in sunnyvale, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. let's turn to our mike inouye who has been tracking the potential impact it's going to have on the morning commute. it is going to affect some people out there. >> it affected me. i was going southbound. the northbound side of 101 is the commute direction where the bulk of the traffic flow will be heading and we're seeing slowing already. you already see some back here in san jose as well. let's zoom into the area and we'll show this to you closer. here is the closure between fair oaks and lawrence expressway. lawrence expressway down here, the northbound side really backing up. you notice folks are taking this roadway, up lake haven. if you get southbound on lawrence and over to duane,

that's a better connecter. that will take you between fair oaks and lawrence expressway, a lot easier drive and a lot more fluid as far as the traffic flow. where bob was talking about, that is not as heavily impacted because that was opposite your commute. northbound is backed up and 237 is also starting to slow down as that is the commute direction, and anywhere north of 101, you're probably using that as an alternate because you're hearing about the hours-long closure that's been in place and likely for another couple of hours. big investigation, we're watching that for sunnyvale, north 101 slow through san jose and toward lawrence expressway. the rest of the bay is relatively calm, standard monday coming out of the altamont pass and throughout the east bay, contra costa county and into the north bay and san francisco. >> thank you. still no word from redwood city police on why officers last night blocked off an area downtown near jefferson and

marshal streets near the redwood city movie theatre. last night police were calling it an active investigation. happening today, the suspects tied to a freeway shooting that left a 5-year-old baby girl dead are set to appear in court. eliana died on april 8th after being hit by gunfire on interstate 880 in fremont. authorities arrested three suspects, two men, umberto, who are set to appear for a hearing. investigators have said all three men are gang members and that shooting was a case of mistaken identity. neighbors are talking about the terrifying moments following a deadly head-on crash in the south bay. it happened yesterday afternoon on fruitdale and leigh avenues. moments after the crash, the video shows smoke coming from the white car there.

neighbors say they rushed in with crowbars to try to help get the driver out. >> it was a scary moment because we didn't know if the car was going to explode because the white car was on fire. we were trying to break the windows. >> the driver of that car was sent to the hospital, one person in the other car died. firefighters did have to use the jaws of life for more people trapped in the car. no update on survivors. santa clara county deputies are investigate ago discovery of a car partially submerged in steven creek reservoir in cupertino. the team pulled that vehicle from the water late last night. the vehicle was empty, no victims were found. it's still unclear how long that car had been there. it is 5:36 and we're looking live at downtown san jose and a little bit of cloud cover there, but otherwise a lovely forecast. >> it's going to be still warm

as we go into the afternoon for some of our inland areas. let's head to san ramon and take a look at the trend. cool start, of course, as we typically see with clouds rolling by. we start out in the low 50s. as we go into late morning we see the sky clearing, temperatures warming up. at noon we're at 74 degrees. as we take a look at all of our microclimates, we'll reach into the mid-80s from the inland parts of the east bay from tri-valley to concord and then up to santa rosa, expecting a high of 84 degrees. we'll be at a comfortable 71 in san mateo, mountain view reaching 80 degrees, 82 for san jose and morgan hill, and along the coastline it's mostly in the 60s today. we will be cooling off over the next few days. i'll have a look at that in a few minutes. mike is still keeping us updated on the crash in sunnyvale. >> it's a serious situation, as far as traffic flow and human lives. both directions of 101 are closed between fair oaks and

lawrence expressway. this is the northbound drive. we're starting at before you get to great american parkway in the northbound direction out of santa clara. once you can get over to central expressway, that's probably a better route, a longer workaround. the big deal is duane, that's your option, but central expressway will take you northbound from farther south near the airport. the rest of the south bay moves smoothly. typical build for north 101 through san jose. same thing for the try valley, out of the altamont pass. the bay bridge, there are not metering lights just yet, but we are looking at a build between the westbound direction. haze, but as you're driving just fine. our cameras are trying to see through the haze, but the drive is doing all right. no surprises. back to you. >> thanks, mike. sadly, not a day goes by that we don't hear about a teenager dying because of

this is the reason why the entire freeway, both directions, continues to be closed in sunnyvale. at about 12:30 there was a horrible crash, multiple vehicles and multiple people killed. we're following the progress on the highway and i'm talking you through how you have to get to work if you're traveling north or south on highway 101 through sunnyvale. strong words from barbara lee, calling for an overhaul of the u.s. supreme court. lee appeared yesterday at an event arguing changes are needed to restore the court's balance and democracy. specifically she wants to see additional seats to be added. there have been nine justices since the middle of the 1800s. lee claims that the court's conservative judges are acting without ethics, nor accountability. >> i've witnessed political gamesmanship, i've seen more ethics scandals than i can

count. but let me tell you, i've never been more fearful for the future of our highest court than i am today. >> lee is also calling for term limits instead of electing supreme court justices for life and wants any reports of ethics violations to be vest gaded. president biden cut his overseas trip short to return to washington. the treasury is talking about who will and won't get paid. >> at some point janet yellen says june 1st, the u.s. will stop paying out money as promised. details on that in a second. in the meantime, president biden landed back at the white house, cutting his asian trip off early. disappointing allies, but returning today to conduct face-to-face negotiations with republican leaders. by now everybody should know the positions of the two sides. president biden says the u.s. should honor its debts, pay its

bills, no conditions, the same way you don't put conditions on your credit card payment or mortgage payments. you promise to pay, you spent their money, you pay. raising the debt ceiling allows government to borrow the money it's already promised to pay for things it already bought. republicans say they won't raise the debt ceiling without new cuts in government spending. lots of people think the government overspends and it's absolutely true, the government does spend more money than it brings in. pretty much no matter who is president. all the way back to bill clinton, the only modern president to eliminate the deficit. republicans promised to spend less but they also bring in less money, generally, which creates the exact same problem, there's still less money than spending. the tax cuts put into place during the early days of the trump administration increased the deficit by trillions, and that was even before the onset of the covid pandemic. speaking of trump, south carolina senator tim scott will

bit of light, patchy fog. nothing too bad in terms of visibility this morning. it's going to warm up quite a bit again today. this will be our warmest day of the week. we're seeing san jose headed for 82 degrees, 84 in los gatos, and then moving toward the east bay, upper 70s, low 80s, fremont reaching 80 degrees. we'll see mid-60s for oakland and vallejo reaching 74. in san mateo, we're looking at a high of about 71, compare that to the 61 in daly city. it's one of those days where from one part of the city to the other there's a big range in temperatures. we'll definitely see that, as we typically do in san francisco. for the north bay, 70 for a high in mill valley, 84 in santa rosa. and we're going to see a cooldown, cooler air starting to settle in as we go throughout the week. each and every day we could see thunderstorms developing over the sierra. if you're in parts of the east bay yesterday, even in the north
