expressway and fair oaks avenue, and now that the sun is up, we've counted six cars involved in this deadly collision on the northbound side, and then a seventh car, at least one car, on the southbound side, so that comes to seven cars. sadly, three people were killed when this happened around 12:30 this morning. as far as the time for reopening, we expect this to be within the next hour, maybe hour and a half. there are wreckers out here that are getting in position to remove the cars, which means chp is wrapping up their investigation. as i mentioned, this happened around 12:30 this morning. what we believe happened is that one vehicle hit the center divide and sent concrete, part of that center divide into the southbound direction, and possibly a person was also ejected into the southbound direction, one of the people killed. so then you had the collision on the southbound direction and then you had a chain reaction collision on the northbound direction, which explains why seven cars were involved, and
6:34 am
unfortunately, as we mentioned, three people were killed. so, again, if you are traveling in this area through sunnyvale and you're heading northbound on 101, you're going to be asked to get off at the lawrence expressway, use side streets to get back on. if you're heading in the southbound direction, you'll be getting off at fair oaks and doing the same thing. the chp sergeant told us earlier they expect this to be still shut down into the morning commute, which we're really in right now, and so the estimated time of reopening was maybe around 8:00. but as i was just mentioning, the wreckers are on scene, which is a good indication we're getting ready to wrap things up. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. now we want to get over to mike right now because you've been monitoring this. and people are going to have to find a way around all of this. >> absolutely. bob said that, the commute direction is in the northbound direction and that's really showing the backup. let's take you to the maps. we're looking at the northbound side. the slowing back here in san jose, it doesn't kick in typically until a little bit later.
6:35 am
we're starting to see a slowdown. this has been all morning north. before you get to lawrence expressway, and this is central expressway. once you get to central expressway, you can traverse up to north fair oaks, if the northbound commute is your direction. if you go north, you're looking at 237 as an option and you do see that backing up as well. folks are heading up fair oaks, so those are two options. central expressway probably your best northbound alternate. as bob said, there's progress, there's equipment to remove the vehicles. southbound 680 does have a crash just past sunol boulevard that does have slowing. that will disturb the tri-valley. outside of that, everything is fine and standard as you travel throughout the east bay and get toward san francisco. back to you. we did send you an alert about this breaking news on our
