this june 1st deadline, but in actuality the deadline is much sooner than that because it has to play out in congress, does it not? >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly right, savannah. for a couple of reasons. first, you talk about the legislative process. that's so important. it's going to take time. and mccarthy has to sell whatever deal he makes with biden to the rest of the house gop and that's no guarantee. and the second problem is, in 2011, even though negotiators came to an agreement at the last minute, the federal government's credit rating still dropped, the stock market still tanked and that made it more expensive to borrow money going forward. savannah >> exactly there already is a cost to this kind of thing. ryan, thank you very much. before leaving japan, president biden met with ukraine's president pledging an additional $375 million in military aid for the fight against russia meantime, in ukraine, russian forces appear to have now captured a key city after a nearly year-long battle.

nbc's molly hunter is on the ground for us there in ukraine with the latest. hey, molly good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you when ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy comes home today, he comes back with that critical military aid and the promise of f-16 fighter jets but the deadliest battle of the war so far, the battle for bakhmut came at a huge cost. this morning, the bloodiest battle of this war for the eastern city of bakhmut appears to be winding down for now over the weekend, ukraine losing its last major stronghold. visiting the front line, a top ukrainian commander admitting his troops only retain an ig significant part of the city and this morning the deputy defense minister says ukrainian troops continue to advance in the outskirts around the city. but on sunday, russian state tv anchors trumpeting mission accomplished, a win for russian propaganda back home reporting

putin congratulated russian troops on their victory. there's soldiers of imagings not independently verified waving flags. both sides paid dearly the exact number of military casualties unknown estimates well into the tens of thousands. but as the sunset on bakhmut last night, the smouldering remains of the city where 80,000 people lived before the war. satellite images from 2022 and this month show a vast, uninhabitable waste land. >> but you have to understand that there is nothing. they destroyed everything, our there are no buildings there is nothing on this base. so just a lot of dead russians. >> reporter: over the weekend, president zelenskyy wrapping up a successful visit to the g7 in hiroshima and will return home with an additional 375 million in u.s. military aid and finally the international commitment for f-16 fighter jets he's been asking for

a new phase of western military aid in part to fuel the expected counteroffensive but back in bakhmut, the leader of the russian mercenary wagner group yevgeniy prigozhin, he'll pull his front line fighters out of the city by thursday, which may force moscow's hand to send russian re-enforcements into bakhmut to hold it now, ukrainian commanders long said the goal in the battle of bakhmut was to pin down russian forces in a protracted fight allowing the ukrainian military to rearm and prepare for that expected counteroffensive. we're watching this week very, very closely hoda. >> molly hunter there for us on the ground in ukraine. molly, thank you. russia is expanding its list of americans facing sanctions in the country. among the 500 individuals singled out, several people considered adversaries of donald trump were sanctioned, including some local officials, including latitia james, jack smith, the

programs in florida schools. earlier this year, desantis blocked an advance placement course in african-american studies from being offered in florida high schools okay so we reached out to governor desantis and his office on that naacp travel advisory. we have yet to hear back savannah >> former president trump is leading the field. most polls show that how much of a gap do other candidates need to have a chance and are they just going to split the non-trump vote that's how it played out in 2016 he was victorious. >> reporter: yeah. the more people that announce no doubt help former president trump. if you look at the most recent polls, they tell the same story. this is really a two-person race but one of the most recent polls shows just how far ahead former president trump is you can see, he is ahead of governor desantis by more than 40 points in this poll so how does somebody like senator tim scott, in the single digits break away?

big picture right now. the recommendation is to brace yourself for this weekend and beyond you think about the travel numbers last summer, hoda. they really popped as people were getting baaing into their regular routines but the projections for this weekend, are higher, 42.3 million people across all forms of transportation. it is up 7% from last year but look at the air numbers. 3.4 million. that is an 11% increase. at this point that might constitute the largest amount of people at airports for the memorial holiday since 2005. now, as far as some of the staffing issues that are going on right now, we have been seeing this play out for months. pilots and air traffic controllers at the epicenter of that the faa issued a warning saying 54% of their target for adc employees, which is to say if you're trying to get in and out of new york they're expecting a spike of 45% in delays, hoda. >> all right so if you want to avoid the travel crush, what is the best way to do it

>> reporter: let's start on the roadways where we thought it will be about 37 million people who are traveling this holiday weekend. the best advice right now, the lightest days to travel right now saturday and sunday, or make sure you are leaving as early as possible as a general rule of thumb or after 6:00 p.m. the worst times you can go are rush hour thursday and friday, really between 12:00 and 6:00. but 3:00 and 6:00 particularly, which for any major city you would think not a great idea to begin with if you happen to be flying, get the earliest flight possible delays accumulate over the course of the day. the top destinations according to aaa, you're talking about new york city, las vegas, orlando and cruise port cities like miami where i am or seattle. they are seeing the greatest amount of travel and a 40% projected increase in airfare for those cities although the silver lining here is year over year air fare is actually down slightly so you can take that with you. but certainly delays right now, hoda, certainly concern, too,

at least three people died following two separate but related crashes on highway 101 in sunnyvale. each in opposite directions of 101 between lawrence expressway and north fair oaks avenue. this happened around 12:30 this morning. the southbound crash involved several vehicles and investigators believe it may have happened as cars tried to avoid a body that was ejected from a crash in the northbound lane. at this point everything is still under investigation and, as you can see from these live pictures, the cleanup is continuing as well. that is why both directions of 101 are still closed. mike inouye is following all of this. the impact is going to be great. >> it is. it's tremendous, on the northbound side, your commute direction, the backup extending toward san tomas expressway. if you're going south, you see the traffic slowing toward duane, that is your alternate to

get you past the closure. northbound is tougher because it is backed up and central expressway is your best bet. two vehicles were loaded onto trucks but there were six vehicles on that side of the highway that need to be cleared. this is not clear in the next few minutes, so continue to follow this. we see more traffic pushing through the south bay, but north 280 and north 85 see more traffic shifting as folks avoid 101. 87 through downtown will still take you into the slowdown, so keep that in mind. 85 slows, but at least that's a smoother flow and clearer north of saratoga.

>> nbc's gad di sh schwartz is at the courthouse in moscow, idaho. gadi, good morning. >> reporter: yeah. in two hours families of the victims will see bryan kohberger for the first time after his arraignment in just a matter of hours. all as new questions are arriving after the knife and sheath. there are questions that bryan kohberger they have bought them on amazon before these murders. bryan kohberger will make his first appearance. a spokesperson for the court says the process should be quick. >> this is basically procedural, the advisory of rights, probably bond. >> reporter: kohberger is said to enter his plea today. he believes he'll be exonerated. the indictment comes six months after the shocking killings of four college students, xana kernodle, kaylee gone sal vez.

maddy mogen would have turned 22 this week. >> i want people to remember maddy as being a loving, caring, just beautiful person who everyone just misses so much. >> reporter: according to court documents, dna traced to kohberger was found on a knife sheath at the crime scene. a recent "dateline" exclusive, a source with inside knowledge of the investigation, detectives found evidence that several months before the murders, kohberger went on amazon to buy a knife and sheath. greg cooper, a retired fbi profiler studied killers of multiple victims sharing his theory. >> we has been thinking about committing crimes for a long time. >> that knife. >> absolutely. he has to become familiar with it. feel as ease with it. >> reporter: the "dateline" report highlighting another incident. a source kohberger befriended a woman who after finding things amiss inside her apartment called kohberger for help. the source says kohberger volunteered to install a video security system himself.

kohbergers. if it were to be admitted into evidence what ramifications would that have? >> yeah. it's one of those super interesting pieces of evidence that a jury would love to have the benefit of considering. but might not get in. i would imagine his defense attorneys would try everything they could to keep it out. obviously normally you can't get prior bad acts into evidence because you're worried that the jury will be so inflamed by it that it would taint the evidence. the exception to that is if you can show someone has sort of an m.o.-a motive that they've done the crime every single way the same time, this is not that instance. the idea of messing around with somebody's belongings in order to try to get them to then be incentivized to want to put cameras in their home, that's different than a violent stabbing which is what we're talking talking about the murder of these four college students. >> "dateline" had a lot of good reporting. one is that kohberger bought a knife and a sheath months before the crime happened

how significant is that piece of received in evidence. >> yeah. another one of those pieces of evidence that given the timing implication could be super important. but you know, buying a knife by itself not illegal and it's just hard to see how are they going to get it in. again, though, it's always been suspicious, why would his dna be on the sheath right next to the body that's always been one of the hardest pieces for him of course, his defense attorney has said he expects to be exonerated we'll see, though, how exactly he pleads later. >> i was just about to see what can we expect to see in the courtroom. a lot of people are expecting more than we might get. >> usually an arraignment is sort of procedural, sort of rote the stakes are high here he may decide i haven't seen the benefit of all this grand jury testimony that just happened so his lawyers you might see decide let's take a beat let's ask for a continuance and come back and do it later. >> we'll be watching laura, thank you very much. >> sure. still ahead this morning,

law. 2023 commencement speaker, our own savannah not only did you give the speech, you got to spend the weekend there at your alma mater. fill us in. >> it was so fun my girlfriends and i got together, saw old professors this was a dream come true not only to be invited but to congratulate these law students who i know will go out there and change the world for the better. as a bonus, i got to reunite with some of my friends who help med get through law school [ applause ] >> this is the georgetown law class of 2023. brilliant minds ready for the future more than two decades ago, the caps and gowns were on me, and the dear group of friends that got me through high school. >> ladies who brunch. >> this weekend we reunited. >> can you guys believe it's been 21 years? >> no. i remember us being so grateful to have each other. first year of law school >> i remember trying to be lindsey's friend and she really

do you know the one i'm talking about? it must have weighed 75 pounds alone. here, i brought it are you kidding me that's one book. do you guys even use books anymore? i worked in local television news, rising from market to bigger market with my reporter's notebook and helmet hair and red blazer, when i decided to blow it all up and go to law school lesson one, high school slackers can turn it around lesson two, don't play it safe there is no substitute for what you all are about to experience. you have the chance to take everything you have learned these last three years, every part of your being, not just what you know, but who you are, your personality, your character and take it out for a test drive. push yourself. stretch yourself see what you can do. put the pedal to the metal your story is just beginning, or at least a thrilling new

highway 101 in sunnyvale, where both directions are still closed following a chain-reaction crash that left three people dead. this is between lawrence expressway and north pharaoh avenue. the northbound crash happened this morning and the southbound crash evolved drivers trying to avoid a body that was ejected in the northbound direction. everything is still under investigation, but a total of seven cars were involved and at least five people are in the hospital with sadly three having lost their lives. again, this has been a problem all morning long in the south bay. >> that live shot showed us progress. they have four cars loaded and maybe one clear. lots of cleanup still. all of 101 is blocked. the northbound bearing the brunt of this backup. before you get to the

that if we're not active in that engagement that we're lazy, useless. >> yeah. because i think you described it when you're on a family vacation before where you wanted to lounge oj the beach and your dad is like, let's go. we're go people. >> yeah. i tell the story in the book being on vacation. my parents were getting up at 4:30 to watch -- look for birds. i went to the beach with a book. >> to chill. >> yeah. and it drove my dad crazy that i wasn't optimizing my vacation. and my mom joined me one day and was marveling at how nice it was to sit in the sun and read and i realized she had never actually taken a vacation. we're always using all of our time. >> let's talk about -- you talk about the seven deadly sins. envy is one. >> yes. >> you look at someone and you think to yourself, wow it's disdain, you're angry with them being whatever it is, successful >> i write about it as the gateway to the other sins because it shows us what we want and the way to identify our

wants, which i think for women it's hard to address them because we subjugate our wants to other people's needs. is looking who bothers you look at a woman who annoys you, she is your greatest teacher when you have that, i don't like her. who does she think she is. or she annoys me. >> what is she teaching you? >> she is teaching you she is pushing on a dream you have for yourself it might be that she is really good at expressing herself or she eats whatever she wants or that she has the dream that you -- she has the job that you dream of having. >> oh, that's a good one, yeah you think they're bugging you. but really you're like i want that but i'm afraid to say it. >> yeah. >> finding your voice, there's a lot to this book we have a few seconds left, but finding your voice and you finding yours is an important moment in your life. >> exactly this is pride. this is a willingness to be seen to show up, to share gifts with the world and women are too afraid to do that. and we desperately need that in the world. >> well, we want to say thank you, elise this book is out tomorrow, right? >> yes, it is. >> congratulations on this. >> thank you.
