5:02 am
so we're starting out gusty, with a few clouds in some spots, and it's going to hold steady with our temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s through about 9:00. we are still going to have a mild day, but our temperatures will head for the mid to upper 70s there, but mainly low 70s from anywhere from dublin to san jose, over to mountain view, as well as up to novato. in san francisco, reaching into the mid-60s. more weather like this throughout much of the week. we'll talk about that. mike, you already have a crash in oakland? >> it just popped up on the chp report. i'm going to ask our friends in the operation center to widen out the shot, southbound 880, just south of where we're looking. there may be lanes blocked, perhaps all for a short period of time if the debris report is correct. we see south of the coliseum on the nimitz, you'll start hitting those brakes. we're going to check on that. the rest of the bay shows a

theranos to offer blood tests at its stores. it's not clear what it means for customers who have a claim. theranos founder elizabeth holmes is set to begin serving a more than 11-year prison sentence next week. last week an appeals court rejected her bid to remain out of prison while she attempts to overturn her january 2022 conviction on four counts of flown fraud and conspiracy. holmes lawyers did get the judge to allow her to wait until may 30th to report to prison, while she sorts out several issues, including child care for her 1-year-old son and 3 month-old daughter. holmes had originally been ordered to begin her sentence in april, but a legal maneuver gave her more time with her children. her punishment includes $452 million in restitution. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you for the latest, bob. new details, federal

theatre and includes an outdoor drag performance and indoor memorial service and an outdoor telecast of that service. also, castro street will be closed between 18th street and market from noon until midnight. that memorial starts at 6:00 p.m. well, the super bowl now officially set to return to the bay area and leaders are already forecasting a big payoff. now, the nfl made it official yesterday. super bowl lx will take place at levi's in february of 2026. it will air right here on nbc bay area. team leaders expect visitors will spend more than $250 million in san francisco and santa clara. san jose mayor matt mahan among those already looking ahead. >> we've got more of the population, more of the wealth where the stadium is located, so our world class airport is literally a five-minute drive from the stadium, we're the only big city with direct transit lines to the stadium.
5:08 am
>> like the last go-around, most super bowl week activities will happen in san francisco, but this time city leaders will have another facility at their disposal, work was just starting on the chase center when super bowl 50 took place. >> people will get great views like this of san francisco, a little hazy start to our day. kari has a look at our forecast. we'll see more fog rolling in along the coastline and cooler temperatures for today. it's looking good as we head out for work in the north bay, looking at san rafael right now. the temperature is at 52 degrees. there's light wind. you're going to notice it will be a cooler day, over the next several days we can turn the air-conditioning off and enjoy fresh breezes coming from our natural air-conditioning, not only in san francisco but all across the bay. in some spots it will be 10 degrees lower today compared to yesterday, so a nice cooling trend as we head for the low to mid-70s. we'll talk about the rest of the

week in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find lower numbers in his department, too. >> that's right. we're looking outside of my department, just outside of where the traffic sensors go. we have the best in the bay area just outside of the altamont, $3.95 at the marathon on 11th street, just on the outer edge of the map. in silicon valley, sunnyvale has natural petroleum at $4.09 and san mateo, the lowest price on south delaware street, $4.29 at the arco. let's take a look at the map. the issue is in oakland where the sensors are really bogging down. a traffic break just south of the coliseum, outside of where we had the camera view. three vehicles reportedly involved and the traffic break going on right now. things are bogging down. now, our camera was turning there and our friends in the operations center were getting the shot lined up. you can see a vehicle on the shoulder and then the camera

connectivity dropped out. i'm sure no one else in the bay area has ever had an issue with the internet. we are tracking this jam southbound toward the coliseum. a new warning this morning for parents about kids and social media. >> also, tonight is the night for fans of "the voice." it's the grand finale. ahead on "today in the bay," the northern california contestant shooting for tonight top priz'se.

good tuesday morning. it is 5:12. as you get ready to head out in the south county, it is a cloudy start. morgan hill, 54 degrees through about 10:00 and then the sun peeks out and gradually we'll see a little more sunshine for today. but it's going to be significantly cooler compared to yesterday. we'll talk about the cooldown in our forecast coming up. and we're talking about this slowdown, this is jammed, a traffic break southbound 880 just around hagenberger, a crash trying to move two or three vehicles to the right shoulder. i'm not hearing about major injuries. the backup should be clearing in a few minutes by the coliseum. we'll check this on the sensors and chp update and give you the latest coming up. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. stock market is still not too upset about the situation in washington. a default is not baked into these numbers. but we're running out of time.
5:14 am
take a look at this, yelp at $32 a share. there's pressure from one of the company's investors to sell the company to angi. he thinks yelp could get $70 a share or more. the "wall street journal" the first to report that. the investor thinks yelp's founder and ceo makes too much money. >> tiktok is suing the state of montana. montana passed a law earlier this month that would ban tiktok in the state for everybody, not clear how they would enforce it, which starts next year. tiktok claiming some of the more obvious reasons for fighting the ban, starting with the first amendment. it also says it's being punished for something it hasn't done. many politicians accuse tiktok of conspiring with the chinese government, but nobody has proved it. >> the u.s. surgeon general issuing a broad warning about social networks in general. we have a youth mental health

crisis in our country and i'm very concerned that social media has become a contributor to that crisis. >> surgeon general murthy will be on the "today" show at 7:00. >> changes in the streaming world as well. this morning hbo becomes max and the hbo name goes away forever, but it adds discovery content. showtime will change, combining with paramount, probably best known as the maker of "yellowstone." it's been really hard for streaming services to make money and that includes our peacock network, but media companies are sure that streaming is the future so you'll continue to see a lot of changes. at least fewer things you have to choose from and pay for, even if the prices go up a little bit. >> there's so much out there. >> and we offer streaming newscasts as well. catch it at 7:00 a.m. it is 5:15 a.m. new this morning, a legal defeat for prince harry and his bid for

police protection when he's back in the united kingdom. the prince sued to pay for his own protection after stepping away from the royal family and losing publicly funded security. upon being denied, he then asked for a judicial review, which the judge declined today. prince harry is expected to return to london next month to testify in a separate trial over phone hacking claims made against a british tabloid. tonight judges from "the voice" are going to put a bow on season 23 of the hit show. >> so one contestant from california really has a chance at going all the way with this. gina myles is from sacramento and a part of the team niall. she is one of the contestants left competing for the grand cash prize and a record deal. on last night's episode all contestants performed two songs each, she performed "style" by taylor swift and "nothing compares 2 u.
5:17 am
". >> the taylor song was really important to me and nothing compares 2 you is probably the biggest song i got to sing on the show, so it was a really big moment for me and i'm really happy that i was able to do that. >> you can watch more big moments tonight, the finale right here on nbc bay area at 8:00. >> i remember when that sinead o'connor song came out in europe and i brought the record back and it hadn't been played here yet. >> really? >> yeah, it was, like, oh, listen to this song. >> and that video, it was so iconic, so simple, but yet -- >> exactly. we're not going for that look, though. we're kind of all coordinating. we've got the pinks and the lavenders going. >> it's springtime. >> we're thinking about flowers and spring and it's going to be really nice over the next few days.
5:18 am
it's, i think, perfect for the long holiday weekend that a lot of people will have. as we take a look live in walnut creek, we are seeing some clouds moving by but it's going to quickly clear out for a nice and partly cloudy day. take a look at hayward right now. it's still breezy, temperatures in the mid-50s, and we're going to see a mostly cloudy, breezy morning, and the winds will pick up because we have a cold front coming in. temperatures will be dropping and it won't be nearly as warm as yesterday. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. check out your microclimate where you can see temperatures will be remaining the same each and every day, even a little cooler by the end of the week. let's take a look at this trend. in martinez today, 71 degrees, and yesterday we were in the mid-80s in livermore. today we're talking about mid-70s. some of these spots inland will have at least a 10-degree drop in temperatures today, especially morgan hill, san martin reaching into the upper 60s. wow, this time of year that is
5:19 am
almost unheard of. and so we're going to continue to see highs in the upper 60s, low 70s, some low 60s for the coastline, half moon bay reaching 62 degrees. if you do plan to head to the beach over the next few days or even this weekend, make sure you're wearing extra layers and bring some blankets and all of that stuff because it's going to be cool, while some of our inland valleys will have some very mild weather. so we're seeing overall across the region here is the cold front right there, not bringing us any rain, but the showers just to the north and east of the bay area. and then as the cold air continues to pour down, we're also still watching out for the potential of showers, even possibly some thunderstorms for those upper elevations in the sierra. here we're staying dry and some mild weather. take a look at walnut creek. we could see highs in the 60s, and it's going to be fairly cool for this time of year, even through much of next week. so this is really a great forecast for us.
5:20 am
heading into memorial day, i think last year we had several spikes in temperatures already at this point. we had hit the 90s. but this year we're talking about 70s and we're going to see 60s along the coast and in san francisco. here we're looking at 60 degrees through the end of the week. you're seeing a crash and a jam in oakland. >> there was a traffic break. we found the camera. they got the camera realigned, looking south. we have flares out. that means it won't be a quick fix. they have moved cars over that were just blocking the left two lanes and that means folks can get by on the right and exit, that's an important issue as folks are traveling south. the jam happens and it starts back here after highway street. san leandro street is a major surface street and you can take it as an alternate. but getting over there is going to take you longer to get back on the freeway.
5:21 am
if you enter on hagenberger or south at 98, you're fine past the coliseum. 580 is clear eastbound. the tri-valley, we did not have the closure for north 680, so both directions flowing through sunol and pleasanton. no backup at the maze. that's slowing by the coliseum southbound. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> an art afficionado is not a fan of a switcheroo and wants his money back. i'm investigator chris chmura. lessons for everyone when nbc bay area responds next. >> and before we head to break, i want you to check out these photos, kari sharing these on social media. she had a wonderful weekend surrounded by family and friends, that's kari and her mom you saw earlier. kari looking good. make sure you share what you did

well, this summer your vacation might include a detour designed to get you to buy a little art on impulse. >> some viewers bought in and then ran into some trouble. consumer investigator chris chmura is here with something we

all should listen to. >> broad strokes, the art landscape isn't just for billionaires anymore. some galleries are actively looking to get folks like you and me into auctions while we're on vacation or on a staycation. jonathan in south san francisco went to two of those auctions, first on a cruise, then at a local resort. he paid 9 grand for this salvador dali piece. but when the gallery shipped it to his home, jonathan found something else in the box. >> it was a copy, flat out it was not the same exact art. >> he turned to us to get his money back and he's not the only viewer we've helped. tonight at 11:00, we'll explain what they did and share the gallery's take. an art pro will weigh in with savvy advice for you to protect yourself just in case an auctioneer convinces you to attend an art sale on your southern break. scan the qr code on your screen to fill out our consumer complaint form online and i'll

join you again tonight at 11:00. >> thanks so much, chris. 5:25 right now. may the mental health awareness month and we're moving you forward with more on how to combat childhood loneliness. a study by the american enterprise found that 39% of gen-z reported feeling lonely. a literacy group called reach out and read says the simple act of just reading to your child can help counteract feelings of isolation. one advocate says reading to your child can help create a feeling of connection. >> what reading does, particularly with small children, is it reinforces to the child that they're very important, that we see them, that we love them, that we care for them, enough to spend that time talking with them, teaching them from the book, cuddling up, having a laugh, having a giggle. it really creates a strong sense
5:27 am
of i matter, i belong, and someone cares for me. >> great memories can be made. reach out and read is based in boston with a branch right here in the bay area. the organization teams up with pediatricians to help expose young children to books. >> love it. >> best memories with my kids. >> now they can read to you. next are the top stories we're following on "today in the bay," the drug crisis in san francisco taking center stage. the actions city leaders are pushing for to try to curb the problem. >> reporter: despite much lower infection numbers, the mpox virus has not gone away and it's concerning some health experts. up ahead, we'll tell you what they're saying you should do about it. stay

this is "today in the bay." and this is also tuesday morning, 5:30. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. i am loving this shot behind you. >> yes, that's palo alto. we're going to have big changes for today and cooler temperatures, especially for the inland areas, but also a breeze picking up and more clouds. it's not going to be as clear and sunny as it was yesterday, but we're also able to leave off the air-conditioning, with temperatures in the mid-50s now and then reaching into the low 60s, eventually headed for the low 70s. in some spots, about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday afternoon, especially for the inland east bay, concord headed for 75 degrees and 71 in novato, while we're still feeling the same kind of weather in san francisco. we'll talk more about the changes ahead. mike, you're looking at that
5:32 am
crash near the coliseum. >> right here, one, two vehicles, a third over here made its way to the shoulder. these two are blocking the two lanes on the left. as we look closer for you at home, we see the jam-up. you can use the hegenberger exit, but it is jammed up getting there from just south of high street. that's the first backup blocking two southbound lanes. then farther south on the nimitz past the san mateo bridge, at industrial there's another crash that was blocking two, now blocking one lane. that's a bad place as well as a lot of folks head to and past the san mateo bridge. we'll track both issues heading south on the nimitz freeway. >> thank you so much. we are learning more about the unspeakable tragedy in oakland, a little girl stabbed to death by her own mother. >> neighbors are bewildered by the violence. kris sanchez joins us with the
5:33 am
story of the unthinkable. >> it could have been avoided because there was known trouble in that home. police had been called to that apartment before. when they arrived this time, they found the 10-year-old girl beyond saving and the mother hurting herself. the little girl lived in the 4500 block of bancroft avenue with her mother and mother's boyfriend. her paternal grandparents lived in the apartment below. when officers arrived yesterday, they had to force their way into the apartment home where they found the little girl stabbed in the neck and it was too late to save her. her mother was stabbing herself with a different knife, police say. her father too distraught to speak. >> the mother killed her, the mom is in the hospital. i've got the real father standing here with his family member. >> as a parent, i know that there's nothing more that tears at the heart than the loss of a child.
5:34 am
>> reporter: the mother allegedly had a mental health disorder. she is now in the hospital in critical condition. we will continue to follow this investigation, but if you or someone you know is in crisis, you can call or text 988 to talk with a mental health professional. >> kris, thank you. we do have a follow-up for you. later today chp plans to update its investigation into yesterday's deadly chain reaction crash that closed highway 101 in both directions in sunnyvale. yesterday on "today in the bay," we brought that to you as breaking news all morning. three people died, five others were injured in those two crashes. now, investigators say it started when a car traveling northbound hit a center divide, more cars crashing southbound and some drivers exited their cars, including people who died. chp now looking into claims of high-speed racing prior to the crash, but so far speed is not being listed as a factor in the crash. >> there's no evidence or anything to suggest that other
5:35 am
than one statement within the log, but our officers will continue to investigate, and if there is any information or any indication that suggests that any of the vehicles were racing on the freeway prior to the crash, then that will become a focus of the investigation. >> police are also calling this a reminder to all drivers to never exit their car in the middle of the freeway. and we are moving you forward this morning on the mpox virus and medical experts say now is the time to prevent a resurgence. >> in fact, new clusters of the virus are being detected in parts of the country even among those who are already vaccinated. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco for us this morning, and ginger, infection numbers are nowhere near last year, but health experts still are worried. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura and marcus. the cdc is once again reminding those at risk to get vaccinated and there are a couple of
5:36 am
reasons why. one of them being earlier this month a cluster of at least 21 people caught the virus in chicago. many of those from the chicago cluster were partially or fully vaccinated, leading health experts to question the vaccine's waning immunity. in the bay area there are six cases, and san mateo has a new mpox case. the doctor said this has her worried, the warmer months and summer events have her worried we're a spark away from another outbreak. >> there remains a persistent low level of disease activity throughout the country, as well as in various parts of the world and it's very concerning that that persistent level is occurring, because there's a potential that at any given moment a spark can set it off and we can see another outbreak. >> reporter: now, dr. park says awareness of the low-level
5:37 am
disease is a key component in keeping a resurgence at bay. she encourages vaccinations, especially with those high at risk because the immunocompromised tend to have severe disease. >> some of these monkeypox infections are not readily recognizable, even clinically to the average clinician because it could be subtle, hidden, so that's a concern. >> reporter: now, according to the california department of health's website, san francisco and berkeley are among the top five cities in california with persistent infections. the numbers are considerably lower than the peaks of infection last year, but despite this, doctors are encouraging those vaccinations specifically before pride month celebrations and summer events get under way. now, san francisco's department of health will be administering first and second doses at some events at the second saturday celebration that happened this month, as well as in june.
5:38 am
that will take place over in san mateo county. they'll be having a walk-up vaccine clinic on june 10th at san mateo central park. you can also check with your primary care physician or your local department of health for vaccine options. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> it pays to be prepared. >> that it does. thank you so much. 5:37 right now. happening today in san francisco, leaders stage an unusual event as one of the city's opioid hot spots, united nations plaza where supervisor peskin requested the board hold its monthly question-and-answer session. the plaza is often called ground zero for open air drug use and drug dealing. while city leaders agree more needs to be done to address the problem, the question is how? today's event takes place at 2:00 this afternoon ahead of the board meeting. >> later today -- i'm sorry, go ahead. >> just a little ahead,
5:39 am
supervisors will debate a new resolution asking for federal help to tackle the crisis. this also in san francisco, those leaders are going to consider the formal resolution requesting transit leaders to tap the brakes on plans to extend the parking meter hours. that's what the mta plans to do week nights and sundays. this is starting as soon as july. first in some neighborhoods, supporters say this would increase city revenue by close to $20 million. opponents argue it will further impact already struggling businesses trying to recover from the pandemic. peskin is calling for an independent report weighing the costs to implement the plan versus revenue forecasts. snowmelt in the sierra is again leaving merced river levels near flood stage and it's impacting parts of yosemite national park, causing flooding along roadways and affecting some facilities. the park remains open, but visitors are being warned to stay away from the water. meteorologist kari hall joins us. it's supposed to be cooler in the bay area this week as well.
5:40 am
do we expect that as well in the sierra? >> absolutely. and we've seen daily thunderstorms firing up in that area, so you have to be really careful and make sure you're calling ahead to make sure wherever you're staying is still open. some of those campgrounds have had to close because of flooding. today we're heading for the mid-50s and the temperatures will start out in the mid-30s, reach into the low 40s and 50s. if you plan to go there into the weekend, we'll continue to see this kind of weather, so make sure you're prepared. in the bay area we're getting quite a bit of a cooldown. napa today will reach 68 degrees, about the same in oakland, as well as morgan hill, mid-70s for the tri-valley. and tomorrow we're looking at more of the same temperatures as we have to pull out those jackets once again, especially for those early hours. we'll talk more about the look ahead coming up. mike, you're still eyeing that crash in oakland. >> i'm eyeballing it right here.
5:41 am
the coliseum is over there across the grassy area, so this is southbound. we have two lanes still blocked. i was watching as the lighting got better. we see the tow truck on scene. the tow truck is key because i think they're hooking up the last of the vehicles in the lanes. two lanes open at the hegenberger exit. now, the other issue we were following, that's cleared from 880 south around industrial. we're going to focus on what's ahead tonight. you're going to use bridges if you're heading from alameda toward oakland, but westbound, the webster tube remains open. in the city we have part of castro street closed starting at noon and that will be a portion just south of market that's inaccessible to cars. better news, traffic has started to recover on south 880 passing 92 and toward the earlier crash at industrial which has cleared.
5:42 am
the rest of the south bay looks great but there is roadwork going on starting today at 9:30. keep that in mind if you're traveling up from the santa cruz side. >> thank you so much. a new controversy confronting san francisco school leaders. coming up on "today in the bay," growing frustration with how the district selects a special counsel of parent volunteers. what some are demanding to make sure the process is fair. >> negotiation continues in washington over the debt ceiling, but here is a question, why are they negotiating at all? >> and gearing up for summer travel. how one of the busiest airlines plans to handle the memorial day surge in travelers, and avoid any repeat of last year's summer nightmares. you're watching "today in the bay."

5:44 am
5:45 am
happy tuesday to you. let's get you out the door in richmond as you're heading to work, it's a mostly cloudy start. temperatures in the low 50s, a little bit of a breeze picking up. as we go into today, we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures on the cool side. grab that jacket. we'll get a look at the rest of the microclimate forecast coming up. and we're still tracking this crash southbound 880, just around hegenberger, right at hegenberger exit. i just saw traffic stop, a few folks walk across the freeway. i'm hoping that means they're getting ready to clear lanes. the backup is affecting the bay bridge and that's right on schedule. both coming up.
5:46 am
it is a quarter until 6:00 right now. this morning there is still no progress on the debt ceiling as america edges closer to default. >> scott mcgrew is joining us and nine days remaining. >> nine days if you count today, and i'm counting today because it's still morning in washington. they have today to work on this. president biden met with speaker kevin mccarthy at the white house on monday after president biden cut his meetings with foreign leaders early and returned to washington. both sides sounded positive, the only positive outcome, though, is avoiding default. here is speaker mccarthy. >> i felt we had a productive discussion, we don't have an agreement yet. but i did feel the discussion was productive in areas that we have differences of opinion. >> now, there's some second-guessing in washington about whether biden should have negotiated at all. the president's position is the u.s. pays its debts, it honors its word. the debt ceiling has to be
5:47 am
