there is a build on the upper eastshore freeway, and that may be because of a fire. it's a roadside fire in the eastbound direction and we traditionally see slowing around hilltop anymore. we do see the build heading toward richmond. the other crash is eastbound, andd we're watching that. over to you. >> thanks so much. new this morning, walgreens is settling a lawsuit surrounding faulty theranos blood tests. "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live in pleasanton with a lot more information. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. walgreens has reached a tentative settlement agreement with the customers who received those theranos blood tests from their stores in arizona and here in california. this three-page joint notice of settlement was filed yesterday in the u.s. district court in arizona. the plaintiffs in the suit against walgreens claim the drugstore chain was, quote, willfully blind to fraud at the company, fraud at theranos. documents show lawyers for

walgreens and consumers expect to submit a request for court approval in about three weeks. terms of the settlement have not yet been disclosed and it's not clear what this means for customers who have a claim after using those tests. walgreens had a partnership with theranos to offer the tests at their stores. theranos founder elizabeth holmes is set to begin serving a more than 11-year prison sentence next week. last week a federal appeals court rejected her bid to remain out of prison while she attempts to overturn her january 2022 conviction on four felony counts of fraud and conspiracy. holmes' lawyers got the judge to allow her to wait until may 30th to report to prison while she sorts out several issues, including child care for her 1-year-old son and 3-month-old daughter. she won a reprieve with a last-minute legal maneuver that gave her more time with her children. her punishment includes $452

million in restitution. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so much to this story. thanks for the latest. new details this morning, federal authorities have now already charged a man they say crashed his uhaul truck into the white house gates. last night the secret service says the man breached security barriers on the north side of lafayette square. right now investigators are calling this an intentional act. the unidentified driver is facing charges, including threatening to kill, kidnap or inflict harm on the president. authorities say that they did find a nazi flag inside that truck. no one was hurt. >> happening today, a new legal hearing surrounding the violent altercation between a former san francisco fire commissioner and an unhoused man. don carmignani was hospitalized with a fractured skull after being hit last month with a metal bar. authorities arrested and later released the unhoused man after carmignani failed to show up to

testify for a preliminary hearing. public defenders released videos claiming carmignani attacked several unsheltered people with bear spray, which his attorneys flatly deny. some believe prosecutors say be ready to drop the charges. also today, san francisco leaders are expected to vote on a resolution asking state and federal authorities to review the recent deadly shooting at a market street al greens. on april 27th the security guard shot and killed suspected shoplifter banko brown. supervisor aaron peskin last week called for the state attorney general and department of justice to review the evidence. some of the fellow supervisors have announced plans to support the measure during today's meeting. today the bay area remembering an iconic drag queen, heklina. the legendary performer found dead in her london hotel room

last month, she was just 55 years old. organizers are calling this heklina, a memorial, she would have hated this. that is the title. it includes an outdoor drag performance and indoor memorial service, and an outdoor telecast of that service. also, castro street will be closed between 18th and market. this is from noon until midnight. that memorial starts at 6:00 p.m. well, the super bowl now officially set to return to the bay area and leaders already forecasting a big payout. now, the nfl yesterday making it official, super bowl lx will take place at levi's in february of 2026 and it will air right here on nbc bay area. team leaders expect visitors will spend more than $250 million in san francisco, as well as santa clara. mayor matt mahan among those already looking ahead. >> we've got more of the population, more of the wealth, and we're where the stadium is

located. so our world class airport is literally a five-minute drive from the stadium, we're the only big city with direct transit lines to the stadium. >> and like last time, most super bowl week activities will be happening in san francisco, but this time the city leaders say they have another facility at their disposal. you may remember just the last time they were just starting on the chase center work there for super bowl 50 when it took place. >> look how far we've come. you always see the picturesque skylines. look at that cloud cover hovering over the bay area today, bringing those temperatures down. kari has a look at our forecast. that's our usual marine layer we see sliding in keeping the temperatures down, as you mentioned. you're going to feel the cooldown, especially this afternoon. starting out in the mid-50s, partly cloudy at 11:00, 10:00, and then we see it clearing out as we go throughout the day,

company to angi, the former angie's list. he thinks yelp could get $70 a share or more. the "wall street journal" was the first to report that. the investor also thinks yelp's founder and ceo makes too much money. tiktok is suing the state of montana. you remember montana passed a law earlier this month that would ban tiktok in the state for everybody. it's not been clear how the state would enforce the ban, which starts next year. tiktok claims some of the more obvious reasons for fighting the ban, starting with the first amendment. it also says it's being punished for something it hasn't done. many politicians accuse tiktok of conspiring with the chinese government, but nobody has ever proved it. >> the u.s. surgeon general issuing a broader warning about social networks in general. >> we have a youth mental health crisis in our country and i'm very concerned that social media has become a contributor to that crisis. >> surgeon general murthy will

his life after he nearly drowned in a sacramento river. he says he and three friends went rafting monday when the current suddenly pulled him downstream and he was not wearing a life jacket. he managed to grab onto a tree to prevent getting pushed along the rushing water. he says he hopes other people learn from his mistake and near-death experience. >> my adrenaline was kicking in. i was gripping that thing for dear life. i'm glad that tree was stable. if it wasn't, i wouldn't be here and i don't think anybody should be doing that, either. i could have died and i don't want to die. don't be an idiot, don't be like me. listen to your parents, do not go in the water. >> sacramento area first responders are calling this a good reminder to stay out of the water right now due to the extreme snowmelt, especially with memorial day weekend right

[ cheers and applause ] >> graduated with honors, too. earlier this month he received a degree in cinema and media arts from georgia's gwinnett college. he took a different path than the rest of his classmates. he says he wasn't interested in college when he first graduated high school in the '60s. but after a slew of jobs, he actually jumped at the chance to get a degree. he says he's grateful not only for his education, but for the friendships that he's made along the way and other students and faculty.

that's the high temperature for today. so much cooler and it's going to remain comfortable for those afternoons over the next several days. breezy winds, starting out with clouds and then seeing the sun coming out. we have a cold front moving through the state producing some rain farther off toward the north and east, missing us here in the bay area. we are getting the cooler temperatures and also a heads-up that if you will be traveling across the region, there will be showers farther to the north, also over the sierra going into the weekend. we could see these pop-up showers and thunderstorms developing each day into next week. but here at home we're going to have a significant cooldown with walnut creek going from mid-80s to start out the week to highs in the mid-60s for thursday and friday. and the weekend into memorial day is looking so nice. we can all leave the air-conditioning off and we'll continue to see sunshine in the forecast inland, highs in the low 70s. we do maybe need the heater in

few days. high temperatures, upper 60s today, as clouds linger a lot longer there for the tri-valley. it will clear up a little more quickly, it will reach into the low to mid-70s. north bay, spots like napa reaching 68 degrees. we'll talk more about the cooler weather in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. we are learning more about an unthinkable tragedy in oakland, a little girl stabbed to death by her own mother. >> her father is said to be too heartbroken to speak. neighbors are bewildered by the violence. kris sanchez joins us with more. they're saying this could have been avoided, they had problems at that house. >> we say it could have been prevented because we know that police officers had responded to that home for trouble in the past and it was known that the woman had a mental health condition. the little girl lived in this apartment in the 4500 block of bancroft avenue with her mother

and mother's boyfriend. her dad's parents, her paternal grandparents lived in the apartment just below. when officers arrived yesterday they had to force their way into the apartment, and that's where they found the little girl stabbed in the neck and it was too late to save her. her mother was stabbing herself with a different knife, her father too distraught to speak. >> the mother killed her, the mom is in the hospital, i've got the real father standing here with his family member. >> as a parent, i know that there's nothing more that tears at the heart than the loss of a child. >> reporter: now, the child's mother is in critical condition. again, she allegedly had a mental health disorder. she is still in the hospital. we will continue to follow this investigation for you, but we'll remind you that there is help, and if you know someone who is in crisis or if you, yourself, are in crisis, you can call 988 or text to talk with a mental

health professional. back to you. >> such a sad story there. kris, thanks for the very latest. we also have a follow-up for you, later today the chp plans to update its investigation on that high-speed crash that happened yesterday. it was a deadly chain-reaction crash that closed highway 101 in both directions in sunnyvale. we brought it to you yesterday on "today in the bay" all morning long as breaking news. sadly, three people died, five others were injured in two crashes. investigators say it started when a car traveling northbound hit the center divide. more cars crashed southbound and some drivers exited their cars, including the people who died. the chp is now looking into claims of high-speed racing prior to the crash, but so far speed is not being listed as a factor in this crash. the chp is telling people that you should most likely never get out of your car if you are in an accident. we are moving you forward this morning on the mpox virus,

a medical expert saying that now is the time to actually get the vaccine if you haven't already done so. so the cdc right now, a new cluster of the virus being detected in parts of the country, even among those who already are vaccinated. ginger conejero saab is live for us this morning, and, ginger, i know the infection numbers are nowhere near where they were last year. some health experts are telling people they should get that vaccine if they haven't done so because they are worried about this. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. good morning to you. the cdc also putting out some reminders and a warning of that possibility. the cdc issuing a reminder that people high at risk should get vaccinated for the mpox virus. there are several reasons why. this comes after earlier this month at least 21 people in chicago caught the virus. now, the people that were in

chicago, that cluster, most of them were partially or fully vaccinated, so it's led to some questions about the waning immunity of the vaccine. here in the bay area there are also some new cases after six months without reporting a case, san mateo county has a new mpox case. i spoke with one doctor that says she's worried we're just a spark away from another outbreak. >> there remains a persistent low level of disease activity throughout the country, as well as in various parts of the world, and it's very concerning that that persistent level is occurring because there's a potential then that at any given moment that a spark can set it off and we can see another outbreak. >> now, dr. park says awareness of the low-level disease is key in keeping a resurgence at bay. she encourages vaccinations, especially those high at risk, because the immunocompromised extend to have severe disease. now, to address this, san

francisco department of health has been administering first and second doses. they did so earlier this month at soma second saturday celebration, and also a vaccine walk-up clinic at san mateo central park will happen on june 10th. you can check in with your primary care physician and health departments for other vaccine options. ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we're now hearing from gle kuiper, fired for a racial slur on air. the a's were playing in kansas city. he was chatting about his visit to the negro league baseball museum when the racial slur occurred. later in the game he apologized, saying it didn't come out quite the way he wanted it to. the next day, kuiper issued another apology. nbc sports california suspended him, pending an internal review,

and yesterday the network made the decision to part ways with kuiper. kuiper released a statement saying in part, i sincerely apologize to everyone hurt by this. it was a terrible, but honest miss pronunciation and i take full responsibility. please know racism is in no way a part of me. it has never been and it never will be. a spokesperson for nbc sports california said, quote, following an internal review the decision has been made for nbc sports california to end its relationship with glen kuiper effective immediately. we thank glen for his dedication to bay area baseball over the years. according to a source with knowledge of the situation, the decision was made in part based on information uncovered in that internal review. but it was also based on other factors. we should note nbc sports california is our sister station. happening today in san francisco, leaders stage an unusual event at one of the city's opioid hot spots, united

nations plaza. this is where supervisor aaron peskin recently requested the board hold its monthly question and answer session, the plaza often called ground zero with drug use and drug dealing. city leaders agree much more needs to be done to address the problem. the question is how. today's event takes place at 2:00 this afternoon ahead of the board meeting and then later today supervisors will debate a new resolution asking for federal help in tackling the crisis. san francisco leaders are also today considering a formal resolution requesting transit leaders tap the brakes on plans to extend parking meter hours. that's what vta plans to do starting in july. supporters say that it would increase city revenue by close to $20 million. opponents are arguing it will further impact already struggling businesses trying to recover from the pandemic.

president biden met with speaker mccarthy at the white house on monday, after president biden cut his meetings with foreign leaders early and returned to washington. both sides sounded positive, but the only positive outcome is going to be avoiding default. here is speaker mccarthy. >> i felt we had a productive discussion. we don't have an agreement yet, but i did feel the discussion was productive in areas that we have differences of opinion. >> now, there is some second-guessing in washington about whether biden should have negotiated at all. remember, the president's position is the u.s. pays its debts. it honors its word. the debt ceiling has to be lifted with no debate. some in democratic leadership are now thinking in retrospect, by entering into negotiations, biden is saying those concepts that america's promises are promises, are themselves

>> it's marcus and mike. it's m&m. >> all right, we're enjoying kind of this cloud cover. i love a bay area morning. >> yes, it's been pretty nice, especially when we know it's going to be a comfortable day. we have some more beautiful weather ahead. let's get you out the door in antioch. it is windy there and we're also going to continue to see those gusty winds coming through the delta. cooler air is arriving and we're seeing some changes. we're in the upper 50s now. we'll be at 62 degrees at 9:00. as we go throughout the day, temperatures reach into the mid-70s. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. we're going to see more days like this. what we're looking at for our high temperatures around the bay area with dublin, 73 degrees. that's our high temperature for today. and yesterday it was in the mid to upper 80s in the south county. we're going to continue to see

more of these days ahead. we can turn off the air-conditioning and leave it off, maybe save a lot more energy as we go into the memorial day weekend, as we are still looking at upper 60s and low 70s. there's not much of a change in san francisco. if you were hoping to go to the beach, it's going to be cool. temperatures only in the upper 50s. so bring the layers. we are going to continue to see the cool air. here is a cold front, even producing rain off to our north and east. if you do have weekend plans in the sierra, not only is the snowmelt under way and rivers are running high and fast, we're also going to see daily thunderstorms firing up. so you do have to make sure you're able to take shelter fairly quickly as we see the same pattern continue into next week. so take a look at napa. our ten-day temperatures, if you can believe it, we're only going to see highs in the upper 60s for thursday and friday. and it's going to come up a few degrees but not by much.

we're continuing with some slightly cooler than normal temperatures, especially going into the end of may into early june. we're seeing inland temperatures in the low 70s, while san francisco some days will only reach up to 60 degrees. mike, you're starting to see more slowing on 880. >> which is kind of typical. we're approaching 7:00. we're seeing slowing through fremont, out of union city. also coming into union city out of hayward, a slower drive. there was an earlier crash at hacienda and it still looks like there's activity on the chp report. southbound 880 at hacienda, and an earlier motorcycle report, someone was limping around the area and there may be related activity in the area. no major injuries, but we do see slowing. we'll follow that as we look toward the san mateo bridge, not far from there, looking at westbound, your build, of course. the eastbound direction increases a bid, but at speed in the eastbound direction.

6:56 on your tuesday morning. welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at our top stories on "today in the bay," including a family tragedy unfolding in oakland, where police say a mother stabbed and killed her 10-year-old daughter. >> this all happened yesterday in an apartment on bancroft road. officers saying that girl who died lived there with her mother and her mother's boyfriend. oakland police saying they've been called to that apartment before. when officers arrived this time, they found a mother stabbing herself with another knife.

she is now in the hospital in critical condition. she's also allegedly had a mental health disorder. if you or someone you know is in crisis, you can call or text 988 and talk with a medical health professional. san francisco leaders today are expected to vote on a resolution asking state and federal authorities to review the recent deadly shooting at a market street walgreens. on april 27th, the store security guard shot and killed suspected shoplifter banko brown. district attorney brooke jenkins later announced she would not pursue charges, arguing the evidence shows the guard acted in self-defense. supervisor aaron peskin called for the state attorney general and department of justice to review the evidence. some of its fellow supervisors have already announced plans to support the measure during today's meeting. >> walgreens reaching a tentative settlement with consumers who received blood tests from theranos in arizona and here in california.
