plan from oakland's mayor to boost safety everywhere. >> florida governor ron desantis expected to announce his candidacy for president today, with the predictable reaction from the front-runner. you're watching "today in the bay." here we go, 5:00 on your wednesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the drive times in just a moment. first we want to start with the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that. >> it's been s so nicee outside. yesterday therere was a cooldow but it did get really chilly in the evening once the wind picks up. we're going to see the same thing today. as we're starting out with clouds this morning, we're going to see it gradually clearing up, going from 55 in san jose this morning at 8:00 to about 59 degrees at 10:00. a slow warm-up as we briefly touch the low 70s and then come right back down into the 60s going into this evening. so we're only looking at a high
5:02 am
of about 73 degrees today, 73 in dublin and also 73 in martinez. a lot of these temperatures a little bit lower than what we typically see for the end of may, and this is what we'll see for a few more days. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you were tracking a small fire off of 101. >> just off the shoulder here, 101 northbound, right around capitol expressway near the on and off-ramps. it should be out in the next couple of seconds. no slowing past the scene and no closures associated with that. we'll track the rest of the south bay. the build hasn't come in just yet. a smooth drive along the perimeter of the bay and getting out from the altamont pass we have that typical slowing as you have the merge with 205. that's the slowest speeds and things get better and better until you pass north flynn and vasco. you're at speed coming out of brentwood, byron and discovery bay. florida governor ron desantis is expected to announce
5:03 am
he's running for president tonight. >> scott mcgrew is in the newsroom for us. he's going to make the announcement on twitter. >> with a follow-up interview on fox news. desantis expected to make the announcement on twitter in a conversation with elon musk. some past video of desantis in iowa, home of the first republican caucus and a must stop for republican candidates. twitter, though, is an unusual choice. we think a lot about the company here in the bay area. it's based here. but it's not as important to the national discussion as it used to be. and the announcement will come on twitter spaces, an audio conference call featured on twitter. again, a fairly obscure way to launch a nationwide campaign, and the decision to use twitter spaces got the attention of the political action committee supporting donald trump, which said, quote, this is one of the most out of touch campaign launches in modern history. the only less relatable thing than a niche campaign launch on

twitter is desantis after-party at the uber-elite four seasons resort in miami. donald trump, who will challenge desantis, also reacted on truth social this morning in the expected way. trump's poll numbers far, far ahead of desantis, by double digits, but trump constantly reacts to desantis. largely ignoring the other more traditional candidates like nikki haley, asa hutchinson and most recently tim scott. desantis will be live on twitter spaces at 3:00 this afternoon. >> so interesting. thanks so much, scott. new developments this morning in oakland. this is where police have solved what they are calling a large string of violent robberies. the mayor and the police chief plan to go into greater detail in a matter of hours. >> bob redell is live this morning. i understand police say all those suspects are minors. >> reporter: you are correct. good morning to you, laura and marcus. opd says they arrested nine

juveniles as old as 17 and as young as 12. police say that they are responsible for 35 robberies in 14 neighborhoods throughout the city of oakland. you can see in this map we have put them all up on your screen there. on sunday, officers spotted a car that was linked to one of the crimes at a business in rock ridge where they spotted the car. officers arrested five people there. four others took off running. officers eventually caught up with them and they were also arrested. later this morning at 8:30, oakland mayor sheng thao and acting police chief allison will discuss the arrests at a news conference. the city says there has been a 7% increase in robberies from a year ago and that in recent weeks the city of oakland has, quote, been terrorized by violent individuals wreaking havoc and committing robberies upon unassuming community members. we'll be following today's news conference and bring you updates in our midday newscast. reporting live, bob redell,

"today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. in a matter of hours the man accused of the deadly stabbing of tech executive in san francisco is expected back in court. investigators say momeni stabbed bob lee after a dispute involving momeni's sister. last month he pleaded not guilty. he's scheduled for a status conference. the suspected driver in a deadly south bay hit-and-run is scheduled to enter a plea. in late march police arrested 27-year-old accused of killing lee choa who was struck with her daughter and family dog. the young girl suffered minor injuries. the family dog also dying. police say license plate cameras led them to her car, which was left abandoned outside of city

limits. 5:06 on your wednesday morning. taking a live look outside overlooking san francisco, it looks like a repeat of yesterday. what about temperature-wise? >> it's going to be a repeat of yesterday. we start out cool, also clouds across the bay area. it's going to clear out as we head into today. take a look at what you're stepping out the door to. this looks familiar, 49 degrees in palo alto and it's 54 in concord. mostly temperatures in the upper 40s, low 50s, 54 in san mateo and mid-50s for san jose. as you're heading out in gilroy, temperatures will be in the low 50s, a mostly cloudy morning through about 10:00 and then we see a mix of sun and clouds clearing for the afternoon as we head for the upper 60s in san martin. it will be 75 degrees in livermore and 68 degrees in oakland, and in san mateo. so we will see more weather like this heading into the holiday weekend. we'll talk about that in the forecast coming up.
5:08 am
mike, you have a look at lower gas prices. >> you call that livermore so i'll call out livermore. livermore has reached a special price, $3.99 at the arco on east stanley boulevard that hasn't been called out recently. thanks to you reporting through gasbuddy.com. in the north bay, vallejo with a low of $4.11 at the shell on tennessee street. and in the south bay we're going to check in with san jose, we're looking at $4.19 at the excel gas and mart on north 1st street. thank you for reports around the bay. on the roadway we're looking at sensors and we don't have any big issues as far as the tri-valley goes. north 680 has traffic flowing coming up through sunol. there was slowing just where the arrow was, there's a crew at bernal, the slowing just cleared in the last few seconds. i believe the crew may have cleared from the freeway off-ramp as well. the rest of the east bay, contra

good wednesday morning. the time is 5:11. let's head to brentwood where it is a windy start to the day. 25-mile-per-hour winds and we're right now at 55 degrees. it's going to be breezy today and clearing a lot more quickly than we'll see for the inland areas, but still keeping those cool temperatures, like we saw yesterday. so we'll talk more about what's ahead heading into the holiday weekend coming up. speaking of that holiday weekend, we may see traffic a little different. we're seeing a nice, smooth flow southbound with taillights through san rafael all the way to the golden gate bridge. we may see a little more traffic tomorrow. good morning. happy wednesday to you. as i've been pointing out for a week or so, wall street does not appear to be that worried about a default, even as some in washington are growing very, very uneasy. ford, which at one point

new this morning, many americans are taking up side hustles to make ends meet and a new report from bank rate found that nearly 40% of adults have a side gig in addition to their main job. side hustles earn about $810 per month on average and about one-third primarily use the extra income to pay for living expenses, while 27% use it for discretionary spending. 25% on savings and about 12% pay off debt. >> got to make ends meet. pigeon ready for some prime time. take a look. >> a mix of sun and fair weather clouds. my gosh, the bird startled me. >> live television, it happens. this one happened at monday's nbc south florida station. you probably already know she's standing in front of a green screen there. it beats the spiders that we sometimes see crawling across

5:18 am
it's 51 degrees. as we go into the rest of the morning, gradually starting to clear out. we'll climb into the low 60s. by lunchtime we're at 61 and it's all clear and sunny. the high temperature there today will head for 71 degrees, upper 60s for san francisco, across the bay to oakland it's 68 degrees, and 71 in hayward, while dublin will be back to about 73. it's about the same as it was yesterday. tomorrow we're also expecting low to mid-70s for our warmer spots in the inland valleys. by friday we're getting even more of a cooldown, especially for the inner bay and parts of the tri-valley, parts of the north bay, upper 60s and low 70s once again. there's not much of a change. you've probably seen that at the bottom of the screen as we take a look at our seven-day forecast. and a lot of the more active weather has been over the rockies. a lot of people will be traveling as we head into a long holiday weekend, and it looks
5:19 am
like that's where the storms will remain, but also nudging back toward the sierra, where every single day we've seen these storms firing up and that continues into the weekend. saturday outdoor plans in the sierra, a heads-up that you may need to get inside quickly in case we do see storms popping up. it also continues into memorial day and even into next week where that rain could move into far northern california up around reading. in morgan hill, we're going to see a significant cooldown, temperatures in the upper 60s for highs. we only make it up to about 75 on saturday, which is about normal, but then we go back below normal heading through next week. for a lot of our inland valleys it's going to be nice and mild, breezy wind, starting out with clouds, afternoon sunshine. but a lot more clouds for san francisco, as well as the coast will struggle to make it up to about 60 degrees. mike, you've been looking at i-80 this morning. >> the eastshore freeway, or this particular shot called the
5:20 am
berkeley curve. i want to show you this since we have a second. this is what we refer to as the berkeley curve through many media outlets around the bay area, but it's closer to emeryville. that's a little confusing, i know. we talk about 80 going over toward the bay bridge. we're talking about this direction, which is west 80. you see it noted at 580 as well because this stretch of that freeway is a continuation of eastbound 580, as well as westbound 80. so things get really confusing around the area. that's probably why they call part of it the maze. these are all the locaters i'm talking about. good news, all of them, no matter what you call them, they're green, at speed. no backup at the bay bridge toll plaza and no problems. highway 4 just showing little tiny blips so that means more traffic is coming. that's what we expect for wednesday, a little more volume compared to the rest of the week. and we should see a good volume tomorrow morning as well. tomorrow afternoon, evening, and

there was a property owner who wanted to take down his single-family home and build a 20-unit complex, and wants to use a provision in california state law to force los altos hill to approve the project. here, zoning allows for just one home per acre of land and a 40-foot setback, so as you would imagine, that's a lot of space. the head of yes in my back yard says that los altos is failing to meet the state's benchmarkin. >> they thumbed their nose and did not comply with deadlines and now they have to face a reality that builders can do what they want. >> reporter: now, this has been going on for a while and when we asked the town manager back in

5:38 am
this may be guam's strongest storm in 80 years. >> yeah, you have a couple of generations that have never seen anything like this. how do you prepare for something like that? and so president biden has declared a state of emergency there, helping to get people more prepared. but this with a direct hit category 4, it's most likely going to be very devastating. we have seen with climate change we're getting these storms more frequently happening due to warmer ocean temperatures as well. so we're going to continue to follow the developments on that. unfortunately, it does look like it's going to be definitely a big catastrophic storm. >> a lot of destruction? >> yeah, a lot of destruction there. we've had some fairly quiet weather around the bay area. we continue to follow what's happening across the pacific and we're seeing some of those storms heading farther to the north as well. and the storm track is staying away from the bay area, so fairly quiet weather. we take a look at martinez this

right now on this wednesday morning, it is 5:42, as you're heading out in the tri-valley. we're looking at dublin. it's a mostly clear morning and a cool start. temperatures at right about 53 degrees with a breezy wind. we're going to continue to have a cooldown, so we're only at 65 at lunchtime and reaching into the low 70s later this afternoon. the cooldown continues into our holiday weekend. we'll talk about how cool it's been in our forecast coming up. and we're looking right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights just activated. there is quite a backup over here off the 880 over-crossing going to the secondary set of lanes. it looked like whatever was happening, they might have had someone walking across the

5:45 am
subordination to that artificial deadline. >> one of the republicans backing yellen's estimates is congresswoman marjorie taylor greene who points out yellen is the treasury secretary, she probably knows how much money the u.s. has in the treasury. there's been little progress in the debt ceiling talks, but the crisis is more than just whether president biden and speaker mccarthy can come to an agreement. that's just the first step. after that, mccarthy has to go back to the folks in the house, get them to vote yes to the new plan. they've already voted yes to a plan that president biden won't support. some republicans in the house may not like the new plan, if we ever get one. they might even vote mccarthy out of the speaker's chair. so even if there's an agreement in the white house, it doesn't mean we won't default. >> other news, former president trump's lawyers have been told by a judge to set aside time in
