parents had for their children, it's lost. so sad. i'm glad we take time to remember. thank you. 6:46 on your wednesday morning. we've been counting the days and this morning there are now just eight days to go until estimates say the government will no longer be able to pay its bills. >> scott mcgrew, no signs of progress. >> eight days is exactly right. eight days until june 1st, eight days until treasury secretary janet yellen says the u.s. will start defaulting on debt. something that's never been done before. not only has the white house not been able to convince republicans to lift the debt ceiling, there are some who may they doubt yellen is right about the date, that it's some kind of strategy on her part. though those critics provide absolutely no evidence. >> just unintentionally giving out wrong information or whether others who maybe want to use scare tactics to apply undue
6:48 am
pressure to try to force everyone into some kind of subordination to that artificial deadline. >> curiously, one of the republicans backing yellen's estimate is georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene who points out yellen is the treasury secretary and would probably know best how much money the u.s. has in the treasury. there's been little progress in the debt ceiling talks, but the crisis is more than just whether president biden and speaker mccarthy can come to an agreement. that is only the first step. after that, mccarthy has to go back to his house and convince people there to vote yes to the new plan. remember, they've already voted yes to a plan that president biden doesn't support. some republicans in the house may not like the new plan, if we ever get one, and they might vote mccarthy out as speaker chair. if there's an agreement in the

white house, doesn't mean we don't default. >> other news, former president trump's lawyers have been told by a judge to set aside time in march of next year for his felony criminal trial, march 25th, 2024, the target date, square in the middle of the gop primaries. trump is accused of 34 counts of falsifying business records. he also faces investigations in georgia and two federal investigations by the special counsel. his lawyers wrote to attorney general merrick garland this week complaining trump was not being treated fairly. >> former governor -- florida governor, rather, ron desantis, expected to announce this afternoon he is running for the republican nomination for president. that announcement will come in a live audio twitter chat. the trump campaign already making fun of what it says is a niche way of throwing a hat into the ring. he'll make the announcement at 3:00 this afternoon california time. >> thank you so much. let's take a live look outside in san francisco this

morning. a typical san francisco morning out there. how will it shape up? meteorologist kari hall is here. we're going to see some of the sunburn off the fog out there? >> eventually late morning into the afternoon. we've seen cooler weather as a result of all the clouds and also the breezy winds that have been kicking up, bringing in that ocean breeze. as we take a look at our high temperatures and what we're expecting today compared to what's average for this time of year, we're about 3 degrees lower than we typically see in santa rosa, concord 2 degrees below our average high temperature and 2 degrees below in san francisco. so we're for the most part just at or where we typically see those temperatures meeting for the end of may. in napa, we've had 103 days so far this year below average. that's 72% of the days that have been lower than our usual temperature for that time of year. and it looks like we'll add some more. so if you're out and about enjoying the cooler weather,
6:51 am
just a heads f up there is a lot of pollen floating through the air. this may be what you're allergic to, oak, pine and cedar trees are really high at this point, as well as grass pollen. molds are low, but we have gusty winds that have been blowing that pollen around, making you rub your eyes and sneeze right now. our temperatures are headed for the low 70s today. morgan hill 71 degrees and 75 in livermore, 77 in concord. novato reaching 71 degrees. it's about the same in san francisco, with low 60s tomorrow, and then low 70s as you make your way into the inland east bay, as well as the far north bay. we're not seeing much of a change on friday, either. so there's no warm-up in sight here. if you will be traveling across the region, heads-up that there will be rain developing, especially over the sierra. going in that direction we've seen these storms bubbling up with the daytime heating and it

looks like we stay in that pattern through next week. one of our usual warmer spots, fairfield, is only going to reach into the upper 60s and low 70s the next few days. it warms up to the mid-70s this weekend. this is all so much cooler than normal, as we continue with the strong ocean breeze carrying that cool ocean air all the way to the inland valleys, while san francisco is only up to the low 60s into the holiday weekend. mike, that south bay commute kicking in? >> it is. you mentioned the holiday weekend and i think that's having some impact on today's commute and so are graduations, maybe some families are heading out toward summer break. a lighter volume, but it is kicking in. 85 slows just past highway 17 and also just off the split with 101. traditional pattern. 87 shows less slowing as far as the duration. it's still in the same spot between capitol, same thing for 101, the build at the capitol expressway and gradual slowing here at 237 off of 880,

milpitas, and toward 237. the feed out of san martin, about four miles you'll have a slower drive from san martin up to cochran, clearing as you get toward morgan hill. we're looking toward southbound 680, still slow, holding steady for pleasanton. 880 holding steady as well toward the dumbarton bridge. there is a build across the san mateo bridge and we're seeing slower speeds on the sensors. the east bay, contra costa county, pretty typical pattern, lighter build. we're holding steady with easier drives toward walnut creek. there's slowing developing for the nimitz, watching for incidents. haven't seen any the last few minutes. there's typical slowing toward novato for south 101. >> thanks for the details, mike. it is 6:53. firefighters in the south bay are preparing for fire season. santa clara firefighters are holding wildland training

exercises in santa trees ka park. they'll practice helicopter rescues and simulating an out of control fire. if you see smoke near bernal road, this may be the reason why. training is expected to start at 8:00 a.m. and wrap up at about 2:00. >> and a quick look at the top stories this morning, including minors arrested in connection with an alleged armed robbery ring.. we're going to tell you the push from oakland's top leaders to boost safety. >> plus, the state's attorney general promising to review san francisco's deadly walgreens shooting case. we're going to look at the we're going to look at the likelihood o chafrg

"today in the bay." >> later this morning the mayor of oakland and the acting police chief will discuss a break in a case involving dozens of robberies. this week they arrested nine juveniles, as old as 17 and as young as 12, who they say are responsible for 35 robberies in 14 neighborhoods throughout oakland. on friday they spotted a car linked to a crime in rockridge. officers arrested five people there. four others took off running. officers eventually caught up with them and they were also arrested. >> california attorney general rob bonta has agreed to review the deadly shooting by a san francisco walgreens security guard. on april 27th, 24-year-old suspected shoplifter banko brown was killed in a violent altercation at the market street store. da brooke jenkins then chose not to charge the guard, believing he acted in self-defense. this sparked outrage among activists and city leaders. some experts say there's no guarantee of a different

outcome. >> angry neighbors battling a proposed complex in los altos hills plan to meet with the mayor and city manager. a developers submitted plans for a 20-unit housing complex. while zoning rules normally prevent this type of development, a special provision in california's new state housing mandate will likely override the city's authority. opponents believe new affordable housing should be spread throughout the city and not concentrated in one location. >> across the bay area, meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect weather-wise. >> it's going to be great the next few days, especially if you like the cooler temperatures. we're only headed for the mid-70s today, low 70s tomorrow, and also into the holiday weekend. >> good news, we're looking at the north bay 880 on the right, that slowing i saw has cleared. lighter traffic. i think some folks are already on vacation. >> just ahead this morning, the
