>> he has quite an announcement to make, and it will be the first time something like this is happening on social media. >> reporter: musk who has faced intense scrutiny weighing in on the race with cnbc. >> i wish we could have a normal human being as president that's what i want. >> reporter: after launching his campaign, desantis plans to visit early voting states on memorial day though he's already been making the rounds and touting what he calls the florida blueprint. he has faced blowback for his governing style after his fight with disney which scrapped $1 billion plan to relocate 2,000 workers to the state before getting into the race, desantis has been a favorite target and the former president now blasting his launch plan

7:07 am
let's turn now to nbc's hallie jackson. this is unorthodoxed we have not seen this before an announcement on twitter it is not video. it's audio, correct? >> yeah. there is not going to be that visual when he makes that announcement that he's running for president. it is definitely different, but that is a feature and not a bug in the eyes of the people around desantis, in his camp. as one person close to him tells me, in this media environment where it is about grabbing headlines, they think desantis will do that with musk there is the alignment of desantis with musk, who is one of the world's richest men, who has positioned himself as the conservative champion of free speech, of so-called culture war issues they think that will resonate here this is not without risk, savannah it is unpredictable. there is a possibility that elon musk may end up upstaged by elon musk that's out there now here you have desantis looking to coopt this for his own purposes. >> let's talk about where the race is because after those

disappointing midterms for republicans that saw him in the political classes we're blaming on donald trump, desantis was looking pretty good in the polls, but since that time he's actually been in a downward trajectory and trump has been on the rise. >> yeah. as they say in the world of politics, his altitude has descended. you see it here, right you see him here in april compared to where he was in february over the spring donald trump has gone up in polling. trump has gone down in polling 39% for trump. 49% for desantis he is the only republican registering at at least that level. folks that i talked to close to him brush this off saying it's a long campaign. this is not unexpected i'm sure they want the numbers to be better than where they are. keep in mind, we don't have the full republican field yet. we expect one more person to come out, mike pence, and announce his run for the

presidency we haven't hit the first debate. 75 weeks until election day. we have a ways to go >> but who's counting? thank you very much. appreciate it. let's move to the debt ceiling and the race to avoid a potentially catastrophic default. that's on june 1st >> a democratic official familiar with the talks is telling nbc news those negotiations have hit a speed bump and accusing house speaker kevin mccarthy of refusing to cooperate. that's a quote during a closed-door meeting with speaker mccarthy, he acknowledged he and the president are nowhere near a deal >> the tone a major shift after talks that had been described as productive to start off the week it is not what most americans want to hear with just seven days to go to negotiate. >> brian cheung joins us now let's set the politics aside for a moment if this happens and it is would be the immediate impact on most americans. >> we're only a week out but it would concern a lot of these programs that a lot of

americans rely on. when you talk about social security you talk about medicare and medicaid you think about the food stamps program. these could all be programs that potentially could see cuts if the government is not able to keep the lights on passed june 1st. but that's not necessarily the case that on june 2nd if we go over that clip essentially that all those programs would essentially have no more money in the tank anymore. there are two reasons for that june 1st is just an estimate for when the government might not be able to pay the bills anymore. it is possible they could extend passed that. but let's try to get this done as soon as possible. the second reason is also because of the fact that, look, when we talk about these types of programs, it's never happened before the united states has never defaulted before the government could cut other programs to keep medicare and medicaid alive. if you are trying to be proactive as a regular person, you have a 401(k) or let's say you invest in bonds, is there
