off with mike inouye and a crash in livermore. >> yeah, somebody died as a result, and bob redell is at the scene. i can talk about the nuts and bolts of the traffic impact, so besides the loss of the human factor there, we are talking about the tragedy of the closed freeway as well. forced are forced off the freeway at north first. eastbound is opposite your commute. there's a distraction, lots of flashing lights. there's a slow on the approach to vasco. if you get off the freeway at north livermore and take loss paw seatious. the coroner was called in at about 4:00 a.m., and we usually see about 90 minutes until they can start to move out of the

for the suspected shoplifter. >> today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. brown supporters are still pressing for that change. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, kris and laura. they are pressing for that change, and there were protesters once again at san francisco city hall, and this morning all the protesting and rallying will take a brief pause so their families can say their good-byes. we are expecting family members to speak at the service that will begin at 11:00 this morning at the third baptist church in san francisco. brown's deadly shooting happened on april 27th in a downtown walgreens, and there was an altercation between the security guard, michael anthony, and

brown takes place over suspected stolen goods. the video continues to spark outrage after the d.a. decided not to file charges saying the security guard acted in self defense. we learned the state attorney general will take a second look at the d.a.'s decision. and i had a conversation with brown's father, and he said they need all the comfort and support they can get. he also shared he thinks the attorney general's decision is, quote, a good thing. he did not share an outline when they expect that decision to actually come down. back to you in the studio. >> thank you very much. we will be streaming brown's funeral service, and you can watch it on roku and on nbcbayarea.com. it's expected to get under way at 11:00 this morning. now to a story you will only

time of year. mike, you have been tracking that crash. what is the update? >> we have the live look here, and bob redell is on the scene. our cameraman, daniel, is showing us what is going on. this is a deadly crash scene on eastbound 580. the coroner is on scene, and your right lanes are blocked as you are passing through the area. there are two lanes that are allowing traffic through. while that tragedy is being investigated as far as a cause, and we are looking at the flashing light that is that distracting the westbound commute direction. eastbound, stay off the freeway until here. the rest of the bay shows you

black eye for twitter and the launch was late and plagued by technical problems. and elon musk explained it away that saying so many wanted to take part that it crashed the system, but it was a little more than 400,000, and those are rookie numbers. apple tv, the moment the new episode of "ted lasso" comes out, they can handle more than that. and the important thing from a technical point of view is people could watch her play the game. as for nvidia, the stock is set to rocket this morning, probably going to go above a trillion dollars in value at some point, and that would mean there's a big demand for its chips.

died yesterday at the age of 83. she was discovered by ike turner and then renamed her. she left him without a penny to her name. >> she played a lunchtime gig out of sf state and they paid her $750. >> oh, to have been in that audience. undeterred turner worked her way back up to superstar status. she won eight grammys and was inducted to the rock and roll hall of fame twice. she died at her home yesterday in switzerland. >> oprah winfrey saying i am a better human because her life touched mine. she was, indeed, simply the best. the "today" show is remembering tina turner this morning.

ruben was part of the hit show "e.r." when she decided to leave the show and tour with turner as a backup dancer. i got to show her at shoreline amphitheater here in the bay area. let me tell you, what an electric performer. the legs, the dancing, the singing, she gave it 150%. it was amazing. >> there are some performers that just sing the songs, and some are entirely a different experience. >> yeah. it's amazing. >> that's a lucky memory. >> left us all this great music, too. >> track of our lives. you are simply the best, too. all right. let's get rolling on to the weather wall. here's a look at our air quality today. we are starting out with a fresh start to our thursday morning,

but we are still seeing some moderate air quality in parts of the north bay as well as the coast. overall it's nice to have the cooler temperatures. many more people spending time outside due to the lower temperatures and cooler weather that will continue for the next few days. so for half moon bay, we are back up to about 64 this afternoon. low 70s for mountain view, and 73 in san josé. 73 also in livermore and in concord. it's about seeing the weather continuing into tomorrow and saturday. just a heads up if you are going over towards the sierra, we have seen every single day storms firing up around the lake tahoe area and especially to the north, and then we will see this pattern continue and possibly even more widespread rain going into early next week for the memorial day, but overall cool

weather and really nice for bottle rocks in napa. it will be 66 degrees for tomorrow's high temperature. you just need sunshine but it will be nice this weekend. if you have a chance, look up and there's a five-planet parade and maybe with some assistance you could see saturn, jupiter, neptune and mercury. temperatures are staying mild and that continues into the middle of next week. mike has been keeping an eye on the tri-valley for a major crash. >> yeah, the vehicles going eastbound on 580 just past 1st street. they have a deadly crash. looks like the coroner completed the deadly investigation, but the right lanes are blocked and there's debris to be cleared, and this continues with the

closure. i am thinking timing wise, it averages about half an hour after the clearing of the coroner, the flashing lights are still there. you are down two lanes, but that's counter commute so you are able to get by. the flashing lights are a distraction combined with the bigger morning commute and there's possibly a second crash in the area, and that's the bigger slowdown as we expect coming out of the altamont pass. everything else is moving standard. back to you. >> thank you, mike. as summer break nears there's growing concern about the amount of time our kids might spend on their devices. next on "today in the bay," the warning and steps we can all take to manage their screen time. we'll be right back.

celebrate aaip heritage month. a remarkable teenager that made soccer history at the age of 16, now playing at stanford. an incredible journey that has already taken her to one world cup. more on that later. a deadly crash shutdown lanes on east bay 580. >> bob redell arrived on the scene a short time ago. what do you know, bob? >> reporter: well, this is a fatal accident, unfortunately. it involves two pickup trucks, it's just under the 1st street overpass in livermore. the three right lanes are shutdown in the eastbound direction. this is the reverse commute, grant it, but the looky-loos are slowing the westbound direction so it's impacting the commute into livermore.

this happened around 3:30 this morning. we don't know the circumstances as far as what led up to the crash, but we just know two pickup trucks were involved and one person is dead as a result. the coroner has come and left. i spoke to a chp officer around 5:00, and i asked how long until they reopened and he said 30 to 40 minutes and that's about now, but they are still conducting their investigation. we don't know what the estimated time of reopening is, and as i mentioned, as you look towards the left, you see the headlights coming toward you and that's the slowing, people caught up in looking at the scene and then the speeds pick up. as far as what happens after that, i will send it over to my

buddy, mike. >> bob talked about the tragedy of a deadly crash here, but now that the investigation is continuing and should be wrapping up, the issue is that we are waiting for the tow trucks. the tow trucks, chp says, are stuck in traffic and that's the reason they cannot clear more lanes of eastbound 580. there's slowing just for a short distance coming toward the area, and like bob said, it's counter commute. there's a low center divide there and folks can see what is going on on the investigation side. there's a new crash reported, one vehicle hit the center divide perhaps distracted by the accident. we expected a lighter flow of traffic but that's a problem in or out of tracy, for that matter. kari, at the bottom of the screen, folks will notice a small crash and slowing on 101 and i will see if they are

related or independent, but for now let's get over to you. we have cool temperatures, and breezy out of martinez, winds coming out of the west-southwest at 13 miles per hour. we will gradually start to clear out by late morning into the afternoon. going from 54 now to 64 at noon and then reaching into the mid-70s for the inland east bay. oakland headed for 68 degrees in novato. maybe keeping that jacket on all throughout today. we will talk about events going on throughout the bay area, and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. anxious parents in san josé are promising to attend tonight's school board meeting to learn more about what the district is doing to keep the children safe. it comes in the wake of several recent scares related to weapons in the san josé unified school

district. there was a meeting last night and they are trying to offer their own solutions. >> i would like to see and partner as a community on the specific concrete actions that we can demonstrate that we are taking and moving forward. we need to model to our children when we own up, learn from it and take action. >> you guys make a great investment into that. that is not inexpensive, and it's rather expensive -- >> last week police arrested a student on the grounds of one of the high schools they say was armed with a knife and a loaded ghost gun. the campus was briefly placed on lockdown and fortunately nobody was hurt. students at that high school are now planning to hold a walk out tomorrow to bring more attention to gun violence. a violent break-in is

forcing one owner of a restaurant to shutdown. thieves shattered a glass door and broke a cash register and through the safe down a flight of stairs, and she said she may decide to turn the venue into a wine bar. it only opened just last year. and then a street crash suspect, a juvenile, last november. cameras show the car driven by the teenager slam into a vehicle carrying a couple and their 7-year-old twin daughters. we have a live look at the

city by the bay. mayor this morning, mayor london breed, will announce a new effort to strengthen storm water management and climate resilience. it includes an $800 million loan agreement. that event starts at 10:00 a.m. and then proof this is one of the prettiest times of the year, and this is video from just before sundown last night. the garden is free to visit. it's in san josé. >> i don't think you can take your pruners there. >> they do have volunteer opportunities. >> yeah, and that's something to maybe check out this holiday weekend. a lot of people have an extended weekend coming up, and it has been cooler. >> it's cooler and there's so much going on. let's start out with the a's game tomorrow back in oakland. it will be 62 degrees with breezy winds throughout the

game. of course, as we head deeper in the evening those temperatures will be dropping. they will be in the upper 50s so make sure you have a nice warm jacket. here are temperatures reaching into the upper 50s on friday. it won't be raining the entire time, but most likely during the afternoon you will want to find a place to get inside. there's also a bottle rocket festival in napa valley. al little warmer on sunday. then on saturday and sunday, the grand parade on sunday morning at the carnival happening in san francisco. we'll be in the upper 50s throughout much of the morning and then briefly hitting 60 degrees, but mostly cloudy there. then to wrap up the memorial day holiday weekend on monday, we will have the giants home game. temperatures will be about 57 degrees as we go into the

afternoon. as we are getting started this morning, you are heading out to 54 degrees, and it will be clearing out. we will talk more about this as well as what is ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike, what is the update on the crash in the tri-valley? >> the update is there's not really an update. you still see one of the pickups. there were two pickups involved in a crash on first and spring town. we are talking about the area counter commute but it's affecting the commute because you can see all that activity. there was a crash in the backup approaching the area just after vasco, so just in that same area near the overpass that is adding to the slower drive. it's thursday and we have a lighter build out of the altamont, but that is still causing slowing. no word on when the tow trucks are arriving, and we have all

the flares still out but we are waiting for the tow trucks. two pickups involved in a deadly crash here. hopefully we will have change in status of the tow trucks coming up. i will show you the break down of the commute. the white house this week is taking new steps to advance research and development of artificial intelligence including getting a better handle on the potential impact for workers. most analysts agree it's too soon to panic about jobs being lost, but we spoke with an expert that said a.i. could boost work capacity. he believes administrative jobs with repetitive tasks might be most vulnerable. >> here are some of the aspects, it could be duplicated, customer

service work and warehouses. there's no key right now of people predicting exactly how it will look. >> a.i. in the job sector is just one slice of a much bigger pie. analysts believe a.i.'s impact will start to be felt within the matter of perhaps two years. in the immediate future, the big threat to american jobs is the debt ceiling. if america defaults 1.5 million jobs could be lost. >> in just the first week. other jobs may not receive a paycheck, and seven days remain until the predicted default. the two sides agreed on some cuts to government programs, but there are not a lot of places they can cut. you can basically break government spending down into

four basic categories. the two big ones are social security and medicare. you want to save a lot of money, cut these, but nobody is willing to do that. the republicans say defense is off the table so that leaves discretionary funding, so that's everything else, education, law enforcement, veterans benefits, the faa and a thousand other things. this is where the cuts would have to come. other news, the president will nominate chief of staff charles brown to be the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff today. here's brown getting a promotion from president trump. brown is best known in civilian circles after speaking out after the murder of george floyd. >> i think about how full i am with emotions, not just for george floyd but many other african americans that suffered the same fate as george floyd. >> and scott made his first trip

if you enjoyed yesterday, you will enjoy today and tomorrow. santa rosa reaching 75 degrees, and oakland reaching 66 degrees. as we go across the region, we have seen showers and thunderstorms developing especially over the sierra. the upper elevations have had the daytime storms firing up. we will continue to see this pattern with heavy rain and lightning in some spots, so if you are enjoying time out on the lake or hiking, just be weather aware and keep your eyes to the sky. on memorial day weekend, people go fishing and do things outdoor, it could be dangerous. reservoirs are near or at capacity. we are seeing them run high along with the lakes and rivers.

looking at our 7-day forecast. pretty quiet with highs in the low 70s through the next several days. mike is still keeping us updated on the crash in the tri-valley. >> yes, even though the shot looks the same as last time, bob is on the scene and he told me two tow trucks look like they have arrived on the scene but they are not hooking up to the pickup trucks because there may be more debris in the investigation. it's counter commute and the slowing and the area is starting to build up. out of the altamont pass, that's a bigger build. the slowing sensors are down vasco. it's standard around the area, but it's feeding into the area where there's another crash in the center divide, a distraction and big backup building in the altamont and 580.

you are watching "today in the bay." turning to the climate in prices, you may have noticed the price of olive oil going up and the uptick in prices could stick around for a while. spain is going through very dry weather conditions, and since the start of the water year in october the country has seen about 30% less than expected rainfall for mid may. this dried up olive groves and led to water restrictions in the country. look at the comparison put out by nasa. the one on the left we had conditions last may that looked fairly healthy as you can see all the green. and then in spain, the key agriculture region is especially brown on the right. the recent olive harvest produced 50% less than the usual
