looking at the commute. >> yes, there's a deadly crash. that's a tragedy. bob redell tells me four vehicles are still on scene there. in addition to the chp vehicles and the flares, we have your right lanes blocked eastbound on 580 as you approach from the overpass, the vasco over crossing there. folks are able to exit the freeway and they are able to get by as well there, and things are slowing in the eastbound direction. westbound is the backup as we are looking for the traffic flow. in that backup there's a secondary crash, so we are looking at the center divide, which needs a tow truck. we have four vehicles that need tow trucks in the eastbound direction, and that's five tow trucks as well, and they are still doing measurements for the

investigation in the crash. the distraction builds and adds to the drive out of the altamont pass. kari, we have a disabled tunnel in the caldidicot tunnel. i will track that very closely. >> you have a lot going on, but at least in the weather department we are starting out with our usual weather, the same pattern we have seen recently. it's mostly cloudy and a nice cool morning. as we take a live look outside in oakland, no sun just yet but eventually will get there especially by late morning. it may take a while before we can see the skies clearing but that's what is keeping our temperatures down, the marine layer layer coming in and the strong westerly wind and the temperature in high word only reaching 68 degrees. we will see a high of 68 in martinez and napa and will talk about the forecast in just a few minutes. in just a few hours friends and family will hold the funeral

for banko brown, the suspected shoplifter shot and killed by a walgreens security guard. and the attorney general is analyzing the d.a.'s decision not to charge the security guard. >> reporter: earlier this week we saw protesters outside san francisco city hall once again, but this morning the protesting, the rallying, that will come to a pause as the brown family says their good-byes. we are expecting family members, dr. amos brown and attorney john burriss to speak at the funeral that will begin at 11:00 this morning. the deadly shooting happened in the downtown walgreens, and can you see the moments leading to brown's death, as an altercation

between the security guard and brown takes place over suspected stolen goods. the d.a. decided not to file charges saying the security guard acted in self defense. earlier this week we learned the state attorney general will be taking a look at the d.a.'s decision. i had a brief conversation, an engagement with mr. terry brown, banko brown's father, and he shared that he feels the attorney general's decision is a good thing. he doesn't know when that decision will come down but does see it as a step in a positive direction for his family. >> thank you very much, ginger. we will be streaming banko brown's funeral service on

not much of a change. i switched the graphic here to tomorrow and it looks exactly like today. upper 60s, low 70s. saturday is also about the same, maybe slightly warmer in spots like los gatos as well as morgan hill reaching into the upper 70s. also about 75 in santa rosa. overall it looks nice and quiet. we have also seen at least here the weather is good, but if you are going to the sierra keep an eye to the sky because each and every afternoon we have showers and storms develop, and there was a lot of sky to ground lightning and that's dangerous. we are still looking at more of the storms that will continue to develop and move into far northern california. if you are going to be traveling further north you may also encounter some of the wet weather and the daily storms, but none of that move into the bay area just yet. in fact, for the weekend we have

the bottlerock festival happening in napa. it will be beautiful out there, and not often for a memorial day weekend do you have temperatures in the 60s and 70s. we will see that. you also want to look up. there will be a five planet parade peaking on may 29th. if you have maybe a telescope or something, you may be able to see all of them and that's something really cool to look up and see this weekend as our temperatures remain nice and comfortable. mike, you continue with the major crash in livermore? yeah, this happened at about 3:30 this morning. i will give asecond to process this information as i step in. we are looking at the chp activity blocking these lanes off, flares as well. this is approaching the vasco off-ramp. it's past the first exit. these folks are getting by the distraction, and the westbound commute also a distraction, and some areas of the middle have

potential impact it could have on your summer beach plans. this is "today in the bay." thanks so much for joining us on this thursday morning. i am kris sanchez. i am in for marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we are following breaking news this thursday morning. there has been a deadly crash shutting down laneses of eastbod 580 in livermore. >> bob redell is live on the scene. bob, what do we know about how this happened? >> reporter: good morning, kris and laura. this happened around 3:30 this morning. we are here on eastbound 580. you are looking towards the east where the accident scene happened underneath the first street overpass here in livermore. i will tell you how it happened in a minute, but an update, the tow trucks are on the scene and removing the vehicles. hopefully this will reopen soon, and whether that soon means the next 15 minutes, we're not clear on that but there is progress on getting this reopened.

four lanes are shutdown, and they are opening the number five lane. chp says the driver of a red ford mustang was heading eastbound at a high rate of speed when they rear-ended a white pickup truck. then the driver of the red mustang ricochetted off the median where then that driver was hit by another pickup truck and it was the driver of the mustang that sadly died at the scene. another person was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. again, chp, they have taken some time to investigate. the wreckers did show up and they are trying to get the scene cleared so they can have it open for the rest of the morning commute. this is the reverse commute direction, and where the headlights are coming towards us, that's the commute direction and that is slowing, and you

have looky-loos looking at the scene. for more on the rest of the commute, i will send it over to mike inouye. mike? >> we're looking over here, bob. you saw the vehicles slowing eastbound, and that's where the lane restrictions are in place, and bob says that's counter commute. the distraction is a huge issue. you saw the low center divide. some folks wonder why are they raising center divides in the bay area, and that's to prevent what you are seeing, and hopefully both directions will get a little more relief. the backup out of the altamont pass creates a huge slow down as you approach vasco and first street. everywhere else around the bay

looks lighter than it is typically. the toll plaza is there, and the south bay looking good with just mild slowing for 101. let's take it back over to the tri-valley with a look outside. dublin, it's a cloudy start. our temperature right now, 53 degrees. this is very much like it was yesterday. we are going to stay in the weather pattern at least for a spot like the inland valleys and dublin. it will clear up more quickly than other areas. at 9:00 we will see sunshine and the sunshine will continue through the afternoon. we will only make it up to 71 for a high today. low 60s for san francisco. upper 60s and low 70s elsewhere. we will talk about what is going on this weekend coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. it's 6:35 right now. a violent breakin' is forcing

the owner of the oakland's high tpau leasha restaurant is closing down. because the cleanup is set to be so expensive, she chose instead not to reopen. she may decide to turn the venue into a wine bar. the restaurant only opened last year. and then a juvenile and the judge will decide if that teenager should be tried as an adult. two teenagers were racing last november, and the camera shows the car driven by the teenager slam into a vehicle carrying the couple and their two 7-year-old twins. both of their girls survived. the other suspect pleaded not guilty last december. anxious parents in san josé are promising to attend

tonight's school board meeting to learn what is being done to keep their kids safe. last night parents packed a safety meeting at a hoover middle school which police also attended. police say -- parents, rather, say they are frustrated and offer their own solutions. >> i would like to see and also partner as a community with specific concrete actions that we can demonstrate, and we need to be modeling and show our children when we fail, which is to own up, learn from it and take action. >> you guys make a great investment into that. >> last week police arrested a student at willow glen high who they say was armed with a knife and loaded ghost gun. the campus was briefly placed on lockdown. fortunately nobody was hurt.

students there are planning a walkout tomorrow to bring more attention to gun violence. and then receiving a windfall all to help our climate in crisis. we are looking at the city by the bay this morning where mayor london breed will announce a new effort to strengthen storm water management and climate resilience. that includes a nearly $800 million loan agreement. the event is happening at 10:00. with summer around the corner, today at noon san josé is hosting a beach safety session at city hall, they will have safety tips and cpr training and recruiting lifeguards. there's a nationwide shortage of lifeguards. as one spokesperson explains, it's making beaches and pools much more dangerous. >> we have already had eight drownings this year in our

community, and this is only the fifth month and that is because we do not have enough lifeguards prepped. unfortunately, all the drownings happened in areas where there are not lifeguards. >> the "today" show has more on the shortage and how it will impact your beach summer plans coming up today at 7:00 after "today in the bay." >> we were talking with some parks and rec department workers in the city of san josé. lifeguards in the city of san josé could make up to $26 if they have the master training, and i said, kids, put your resumes online. >> your girls are swimmers, too. >> the little one is too young, but the big one can. memorial day weekend, it's going to be chilly out there.

definitely good for baseball. we have a home game for the a's tomorrow. 61 degrees and partly cloudy and breezy winds out there then. we will see temperatures dropping into the upper 50s by the end of the game, so wear layers because it will be chilly out there. we have had thunderstorms developing each afternoon there in south lake tahoe. it does make it dangerous if you are going to be out hiking or in the wide-open spaces. this weekend we have bottlerock happening in napa and it will be amazing. temperatures reach into the low 70s. overnight temperatures in the low 50s. we can wrap up the weekend with carnival in san francisco. the grand parade will be on sunday morning. it's going to be in the mid-50s with some peeks of sunshine. mike, still watching that crash in the tri-valley?

>> kari, we keep taking the live look at bob redell and daniel are showing us here. traffic is slowing but there are more lanes open now. they opened an additional lane in the eastbound direction. we still have a tow truck and a flatbed and another tow truck for these two vehicles, and there are more closer to bob as he is closer to first street there. and then the sensors show it's bogging down in the westbound direction. that's the biggest backup. the build is for vasco. despite there's all the activity in the area, we're still half an hour from brentwood and discovery bay. towards the bay bridge, the metering lights are on and the backup is filling the screen but you will notice there's good spacing and good movement over here on the bay bridge. that's great movement.

showing up on altamont pass road, as you can see. vasco, we will talk about the activity there with the crash activity, coming up. the a.i. explosion is having a lot of people asking themselves if it's going to jeopardize the future workforce. and the white house is looking at that including trying to get a better handle on the potential impact for workers. most analysts agree it's too soon to panic about jobs lost, but we spoke with one expert that said a.i. could boost jobs in some areas, but some could be vulnerable. >> some of the things that could be duplicated with a.i. and workers, is customer service work and warehouse work. there's no key right now for people predicting exactly how that will look.

>> a.i. in the job sector is one slice of a much larger pie, but many analysts believe a.i.'s impact will be felt in about two years. the big threat to american jobs in the immediate future is the debt ceiling. if america defaults on its loans we could see a million and a half jobs lost in the first week. >> yeah, in the first week. and other jobs might not provide a steady paycheck because the government would struggle to find the money to pay air traffic controllers, u.s. navy sailors, and doctors that bill medicare or social security recipients. seven days remain until the predict the default. the two sides have agreed to some cuts to government programs, but there are not a lot of places they can cut. you can break government spending down into four basic categories. the big two are social security and medicare.

you want to save money? cut those. nobody is willing to do that. the republicans say defense is off the table, so that leaves discretionary funding, everything else, education, health care, law enforcement, border security, veterans benefits and faa -- a thousand other things. this is where the cuts would come but it's a very small part of the budget. in other news, the president will nominate brown to be the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. brown is best known in civilian circles for speaking out after the murder of george floyd. >> i am thinking about how full i am with emotion not for just george floyd but the others that suffered the fate like george floyd. and tim scott in iowa and has a town hall with iowa voters

well as the inland, and maybe a touch warmer in a few spots but not by much. we are seeing showers and thunderstorms developing over the tahoe area. a lot of activity yesterday with the thunderstorms that produced cloud to ground lightning. be careful if you are going there or going out hiking or on the lake for the next few days because we are looking at more active weather. if you are traveling to far northern california, there will be rain chances increasing. it stays away from the bay area but keeps us with cooler temperatures. we have seen reservoirs rising quickly, so stay out of the water, out of the rivers that have the water rushing past, and with the snow-melt those are rising across california. it's nice and sunny inland.

we start out with low clouds and temperatures in the 50s. it will be about the samame als in sanan francisco with highs i the low 60s. mike, are you seeing changes in the tri-valley? >> yeah, in fact, wanted to show pictures from bob redell, but they can't show those because they had to move. a deadly crash happened about 3:30 this morning, and the investigation and cleanup continued for the last few hours and now we are about ready to see the lanes open. when the flares all clear, the westbound commute will have less distractions. that will be a better flow of traffic out of the altamont. the last section of 580, that should recover. south bay shows how much lighter the commute is.

6:57 on your thursday morning. welcome back. we are moving you forward withha look at this morning's top stories including breaking news. >> right now all lanes near first street on 580 are open again. they just reopened in the last few minutes. that comes as a person was killed in an overnight crash. it happened around 3:30 this morning, and according to the chp a red ford mustang was speeding and caused a train reaction. one person died and one taken to the hospital. mike has been following this all morning long. there's a crash on the other side of the freeway. westbound will recover after they finally hookup the last crash, unrelated to the first

crash, but the recovery for 580 should improve. back to you. >> thank you. the funeral today for the person shot and killed in san francisco by a walgreens security guard suspected of shoplifting, it happened on april 27th. video showed the altercation between the guard and suspected shoplifter banko brown that was unarmed but made a move towards the guard before a single shot was fired. the funeral comes just days after the state attorney general is reexamining the decision not to charge the security guard. the funeral will be streamed on nbcbayarea.com and is expected to get under way at 11:00 this morning. kari, a cool start, but a nice start. >> it's going to be a great day. we will see the sky clearing up and we are headed for 70 degrees, so even a touch cooler.
