beautiful afternoon. we're talking about the weekend plans and the weather for all of our microclimates coming up. we do have an issue here, continuing the alert for south 17, just before hamilton. we're just down to one lane, a deadly crash. a number of vehicles to be cleared. chp just updated us, one lane is open now. about 45 minutes from now they hope to have all lanes reopened. that's about 6:30. we'll track the progress as we track the build because the volume is starting to build through the south bay right about now as well. 5:47 now. an east bay business was broken into twice within 24 hours, chattered glass and boarded-up windows greeted customers at nick's sandwiches on railroad avenue yesterday. the owner says the vandal stole food and drinks. police are investigating and have taken one person into custody. the united states is running low on money. the treasury says it's down to
5:49 am
about $50 billion. scott mcgrew is here. that sounds like a lot of money, but not when you're a country. >> bill gates has about twice that. so bill gates, united states. the amount of money the united states has on hand does vary day to day because money flows into and out of the treasury every day. keeping that money supply predictable is why we have treasury bonds. the government buys and sells them all the time, but the government can't issue debt because we haven't raised the debt ceiling. it's as simple as that. when we run out of money, we stop paying for things. the government checks stop, we default. janet yellen predicts that will happen a week from today. in the meantime, the united states of america, the leader of the free world, winner of two world wars, has $49 billion in cash on hand to run the country. apple, the company, has $55 billion of cash on hand it keeps around for emergencies. the word on the beltway is
5:50 am
negotiations are going well, the two sides are close to a deal. republican negotiators willing to raise the debt ceiling for two years past the upcoming elections in exchange for cutbacks to the irs, food stamps and other programs. this "new york times" headline, both sides in the room walk away happy, it says, everybody gets a win, except republicans in the house are not happy. that is not the agreement they had, it's not the bill they signed. remember, some of them barely tolerate speaker mccarthy as it is. here is chip roy from texas on news the deal may be close. >> when it comes down to game time, and it's game time right now, when it comes down to game time are we going to use the power of the purse to defend the american people against the onslaught of tyranny of the executive branch, or are we going to tuck tail, take the first exit ramp off and walk away? because what i'm hearing right
5:51 am
now being debated, being negotiated, is taking the first exit ramp off to cut a deal. >> mccarthy needs that guy and the rest of the house to agree to the deal he strikes with the white house. so despite all the positive headlines, mccarthy is still acting like there's no deal, that he didn't take the first exit ramp. >> there is no agreement, all right? we know where our differences lie, we've worked throughout the day, we'll continue to work to try to be able to solve the problem, but there's no agreement. >> if we hear about a deal in the white house, that does not mean the problem is solved. it has to pass the house and senate, too. they're ready to vote, but will they vote yes? >> a and when will they do it i they do it at all? thank you very much. well, let's get some refreshing news. how about a live look outside in san francisco? the sun is up, it's going to burn through the clouds and warm things up. we've had some cool days, but we're not complaining. it's been quite pleasant. and a lot of folks approaching a

three-day weekend. sometimes you don't care what the weather is going to be. >> when you're off, it's all good. >> i was looking at that camera because it's misting and drizzling right now in san francisco. i wanted to give you another view because that's kept the temperatures down, especially near the coastline. you not only need the jacket, but also something that's going to help protect you from the drizzle that's coming down, the drizzle storm in san francisco. so our may gray continues and we'll see that keeping our coastal areas very chilly. meanwhile, our inland valleys have been very comfortable. take a look at brentwood. it's windy right now but mainly clear, 55 degrees. we'll see temperatures in the low 60s, in the mid-60s by noon as we head for the low 70s. you compare the low 70s in fairfield to the 75 we'll see in los gatos and then only 60 degrees for half moon bay. novato reaching 68 degrees. what we had yesterday, what we have today will be the same thing we'll see tomorrow, as well as sunday. only some minor changes here and
5:53 am
there as we are looking at our temperatures remaining about the same. the cool air continues, and this has been cooler than normal, especially for memorial day weekend. we're going to continue to see the below average temperatures into the holiday, but we've also seen showers and thunderstorms developing over the sierra in some of those upper elevations, we may see more of that going into next week. all quiet here and i really didn't have to change the temperatures too much from day to day. each morning we start out in the low 50s, we reach into the low 70s in the warmest spot inland while the coastal areas in san francisco only reach up to about 60 degrees. mike, do we know how long those lanes will be blocked on 17? >> we know what chp told us. they said about 45 minutes from their first report, so basically that translates to 6:30 when they think southbound 17 will have all lanes open. you can't really see the slowing sensors, but they are there as you travel south approaching hamilton, you're down to one
5:54 am
lane because of a deadly crash. the investigation and clearing the cars is taking some time. winchester boulevard is an alternate to get you past the scene and back to hamilton. then south 17 is clear toward the santa cruz summit. it's friday, so it's a lighter build. back over to you. >> thank you, mike. happening now, police are investigating a hate crime targeting the berkeley home of uc president michael drake. investigators say last week vandals spray painted racial slurs, profanity and offensive symbols. neighbors tell us someone recently smashed the windows as well, which led to a new fence going up all around the home. drake's office is now working with police to find the people responsible. b.a.r.t. is ready to take you where it never has really gone before, into the world of anime. we're going to show you the brand new mascot and the special timing behind this unusual unveiling. >> then at 6:00, a deadly double shooting rocking an east bay
