6:45 am
good friday morning to you. it is a cloudy start around the bay area, but it will also be a cooler day compared to what we've had recently. we're still seeing the same weather throughout the week, mid-50s to start, gradually clearing and sunshine for the afternoon. expect it to be a nice weekend. we'll talk about that around all of our microclimates coming up. and a holiday weekend, that's why the berkeley curve looks so light. we're having a little trouble seeing it from time to time because little droplets are building up on the lens. not a major problem for folks
6:46 am
driving through the area. we are tracking that, as well as the one lane that's open on south 17 as you travel through campbell. an east bay business broken into twice in 24 hours. you can see the chattered glass. now the windows are boarded up and customers at nick's sandwiches on railroad avenue yesterday were greeted by that. the owner says vandals stole food and drinks before taking off. police are investigating and have taken at least one person into custody. the united states is running low on money. the treasury says it is down to about $50 billion. >> that's a lot of money, scott mcgrew, unless you are a dang country. >> and a large country at that. $50 billion, bill gates is worth twice that, so bill gates and the united states. now, the amount of money that goes in and out of the united states varies day to day because money flows back and forth through the treasury. we might have more tomorrow.
6:47 am
keeping that money supply even and predictable is why we have treasury bonds. the government buys and sells them all the time. but the government can't issue debt because we haven't raised the debt ceiling. it's as simple as that. when we run out of money, we stop paying for things. the government checks stop and we default. janet yellen predicts that will happen a week from today. in the meantime, this morning, the united states of america, the leader of the free world, winner of two world wars, has $49 billion cash on hand to run the country. apple, the company, has $55 billion cash on hand it keeps around for emergencies. now, the word on the beltway is that negotiations are going well, that the two sides are close to a deal. republican negotiators willing to raise the debt ceiling for two years, that's past the upcoming elections, in exchange for cutbacks to the irs, food stamps and other programs.
6:48 am
this is "the new york times" this morning, both sides are going to walk away happy, everybody gets a win. except republicans in the house are not happy. that is not the agreement they had. it is not the bill they signed. remember, some of them barely tolerate speaker mccarthy as it is. here is chip roy from texas on news a deal may be close. >> but when it comes down to game time, and it's game time right now, when it comes down to game time are we going to use the power of the purse to defend the american people against the onslaught of the tyranny of the executive branch, or are we going to tuck tail, take the first exit ramp off and walk away? because what i'm hearing right now being debated, being negotiated, is taking the first exit ramp off to cut a deal. >> now, mccarthy needs the house to agree to the deal that he strikes with the white house.
6:49 am
despite all the positive headlines, he's still acting like there's no deal, that he didn't take an exit ramp. >> there's no agreement, all right? we know where our differences lie, we've worked throughout the day. we'll continue to work to try to be able to solve the problem. but there's no agreement. >> so a reminder, if we hear about a deal in the white house negotiations, it doesn't mean the problem is solved. it's got to pass the house and senate, too. and, laura, they say they are ready to vote, they're on vacation but they'll return. the queststion is, will they vo yes? >> we'll wait and see. thank you very much. ahead this morning, decades old questions answered for a family by a group focused on identifying service members missing in action since world war ii. the group conducts archeological digs, spending hours sifting through acres of dirt looking for the remains of missing service members. one member says in many cases
6:50 am
this is all that families have to rely on. >> there are so many families that are out there that have this hole, they are missing something, they sent a loved one out the door expecting to see them again and they didn't come back. and not only did they not come back, they don't have answers. >> the group recently discovered a world war ii crash site in germany and they discovered the remains of a u.s. pilot. history flight was able to transport the remains back to pennsylvania where the pilot's sister could say that final good-bye. closure the family has been waiting decades for. great work they're doing. a noble cause and a good reason for us to remember memorial day. >> absolutely. >> so important. >> we should take the day off, but remember why you get the day off. >> exactly. so important. happening now, police investigating a hate crime, and we're going to get to that in just a little bit. let's get to the forecast right now.

6:52 am
they've had storms firing up every day. so this is looping the past 18 hours, and i do expect it to continue to stay in this pattern with the thunderstorms that have been really having a high impact for people traveling there. and you want to make sure that you're planning for those outdoor activities, but also having a way you can get inside and take shelter in case one of those storms do fire up. we'll see that continue throughout the weekend. cool weather for the bay area. we're going to also see more of those storms into memorial day as well as next week. that's on top of the sierra snowmelt. so we've seen the waterways running very high fast and very cold temperatures. here we're looking at highs in the low 70s. if you do have beach plans or will be in san francisco, only 60 degrees for the next several days. mike, what's the update on that south bay crash? >> we got an update from chp telling us when this right here, south 17, will start to move better, we believe. originally they thought the lanes would clear just before you get to hamilton at 6:30.
