your afternoon in the 70s. if you are looking for that sunshine and getting ready for your memorial day weekend, the sunshine and the warmer temperatures will be away from the coastline in the mid to upper 70s in parts of fairfield, fremont, los gatos. we'll talk more about your microclimate forecast and tracking some changes for sunday and on into monday. the first week of june is around the corner. we'll talk about that in a little bit. kira. >>en thanks. we begin with breaking news. a high speed chase on 101 reaching more than 100 miles an hour. [ sirens ] >> that was the moment a spike strip stopped the car nearly 50 miles away from where the chase started. it began after midnight when police responded to calls of a car speeding down southbound 101. the california highway patrol took over the pursuit in san

killlled i in emeryvyville. itit happened d before midninig 41st andnd san pablolo a avenue the oak c cards c club. the shooter was i in a car, saya witness, a and firired theirir t ththe window, killing the victi. again, the search continues for all those people responsible. the fbi and the environmental protection agency are now a part of a probe into a bay area oil refinery. it follow hes an incident last november when hazardous pollute e ens were released into the sky. gia vang speaks to concerned citizens. >> reporter: the refinery company behind me prompted this federal investigation, and it is forcing people living in the area and surrounding areas to think twice when they step outside. >> i'm stressed out. my breathing, that's probably one of the problems i'm having. i'm not breathing as deeply as i should be. >> reporter: a pinch of anxiety

and the understanding she can't consume anything she's growing. >> we're on hold with eating anything from our property. >> reporter: that's because on a clear day, you can see the plumes from the martinez refinery company billowing into the sky from her dining room. november around thanksgiving, she and her neighbors found their vehicles dusted with a powdery substance. >> my husband was out at the car unloading it, and he just commented to me, there's this odd dust that's all over our car. it's also on our back deck. >> reporter: they would later find out it was metal-laden dust or spent catalyst that could cause respiratory issues. the officials said the refinery failed to inform them about it as required by law. six weeks later, the fbi and epa are stepping in. in a statement, the fbi said both agencies are speaking with members of the community in martinez who could have been affected by the release. agents are canvassing the neighborhood thursday night, asking people like wendy -- >> were you harmed by the incident? do you have any health issues

related to it? do you -- and then what did you notice that day? do you have any photos or video? it elevates the questions surrounding this incident to a federal level of violations. >> reporter: wendy is part of healthy martmartinez, with a gof keeping the refinery cleaned up, making sure the soil doesn't have traces of these chemicals. in a couple weeks, contra costa health department should receive lab results of soil samples from a dozen sites to determine the extent of heavy metal poisoning in martinez and surrounding areas. >> i didn't touch them this year because of the spent catalyst. >> reporter: it is highly anticipated for wendy and so many people in the area. >> i just would like to be able to, you know, ride my bike freely and not question if i go outside today, am i breathing in toxic air? i'd love to go out to this

waterfront and enjoy it for what it is. that requires a business to operate to the highest standards >> reporter: the corporate office in new jersey, we called after hours and haven't heard back. gia vang, "today in the bay." three alameda county law enforcement officers are now facing a range of crimes related to their past work in the county's jail system. two sheriff's deputies, sherri baughman and bracamontes failed to supervise an inmate who later died by suicide at the santa rita jail in 2021. another officer is accused of sex acts with a 15-year-old who was being held at the juvenile justice center. it is alleged 20-year juvenile institutional officer, nicole perales, committed the crimes between 2004 and 2005. all three officers were charged by the public accountability

unit within the alameda county district attorney's office. we have a look at new body camera and surveillance video, giving a clearer picture of what led to an officer-involved shooting that left a burglary suspect dead. sfpd released the videos during a virtual town hall meeting yesterday. the shooting happened at a building on bosworth last week. police received a call that a man, now identified at 40-year-old barrios, broke into a unit and had a gun. that was barrios there you saw in the red sweater. videos now show police arriving and surrounding the building. >> drop the gun. come out! turn around and come back to me. turn around. come back to me. >> the officer provides numerous commands for mr. barrios to drop the firearm. mr. barrios drops the firearm on the ground, and it can be heard contacting the ground. >> police slowed down that video

to show what happened right before police shot and killed barrios. you can see barrios first reach for his keys, and seconds later, he reaches for his gun. that's when you hear officers fire. [ gunshots ] >> one officer fired his rifle, three officers fired what are being called less lethal weapons. barrios died at a hospital. sfpd and the district attorney's office are now investigating that shooting. the family of a trans man who was shot and killed at a san francisco walgreens has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. yesterday, banko brown's relatives filed suit against walgreens, the security company they hired, and their guard who shot brown. the suit alleges walgreens provided inconsistent policies to security guards about confronting shoplifters.

the lawsuit comes just days after california's attorney general, rob bonta, announced he will review the san francisco district attorney's decision not to file charges against that guard. d.a. brooke jenkins maintains the guard fired in self-defense. san francisco mayor london breed is announcing a plan to put city safety on the forefront by getting more police on the streets. the mayor highlighted parts of her new public safety proposal during a walking tour through the valley yesterday. breed acknowledged the city has a number of problems, including fentanyl deaths in the tenderloin, open air drug markets and growing vacancies in the financial district. the mayor says one of the first steps towards dealing with those issues is to hire more police officers. >> our goal in the next two years, based on our numbers, based on the information i have so far, we anticipate that we'll have at least 220 new officers

welcome back. 7:14 on your saturday morning. a live look at walnut creek. good morning to you out there. cloudy skies covering you. but cinthia pimentel says sunshine is on the way for our inland areas today. she'll be along in a few minutes with your full microclimate forecast. first, as we approach june, the clock is ticking to raise the debt ceiling. president biden and lawmakers have left washington, d.c. for the holiday weekend without a deal to avert a government default. president biden, though, says he is optimistic a deal can be

reached before the new june 5th deadline. if not, the u.s. treasury will not have enough funds to pay all of the nation's debts. with no bill to vote on yet, house lawmakers will be given 24 hours notice to return if and when a deal is reached. happening now, new warnings ahead of memorial day weekend amid concerns over rising river levels east of the bay area. first responders are hoping to avoid more scenes like this. this is a water rescue in powerful currents. the massive snow melt this year has led to 20 water rescues alone in the sacramento area. nearly as much as all of last year combined. in a few cases, people have lost their lives. meanwhile, water levels at yosemite are extremely high, as we've been telling you. park rangers are advising visitors to keep their distance when visiting waterfalls and

waterways. and with memorial day weekend here, many people are getting together for barbecues. it's the unofficial start of summer. it means the return of cookouts. before you grill, food experts have tips to keep in mind. >> the most important rule is the two-hour rule or one-hour rule. you know, iff you're cooking a product, you have two hours to consume the product or refrigerate it. if you live in an area where it's 90 degrees or higher, you only have one hour. >> oh, wow. a few other tips includehing your hands before and after handling raw meat, raw food. use a meat thermometer. keep raw food away from cooked food. good tips there. hundreds of students walked out of a south bay classroom to teach others a lesson in safety. they left their fourth period classes at willow glen high

school in san jose yesterday, but they didn't leave campus. their goal was to tell anyone who would listen how afraid and how angry they are about gun violence at schools. just last week, police arrested a willow glen student for bringing a loaded ghost gun on campus. days earlier, another student was arrested at hoover middle school, also for bringing a loaded gun to campus. the vice principal at willow glen tells us he believes the campus responded to that threat just as they were trained. happening today, we are celebrating the opening of one very special bay area icon. you're looking at her right now. a live look at the golden gate bridge as she rings in her 86th birthday. the bridge opened to the public on this day, may 27th, back in 1937. more than 10 million visitors come to see the signature international orange towers every year.

unstable weather. the waterways are running high, and there is a chance of thunderstorms throughout the weekend. back at home, if you have plans to hang on tight, there's no problem with that. we'll be doing that here with you. we're staying with the cloud cover and maybe a chance of drizzle along the coast. by your 11:00 a.m. hour, i know it's almost june, but bring the winter coats out to the coastline. we'll see more warming inland if you have long holiday plans with your family and friends out there. that cloud cover will return and be more packed as we go on into your day on sunday. as far as our high temperatures today, again, away from the coastline, we'll see those nice 70s. we have 73 in concord. 75 down in san jose. chilly 59 degrees as we go on into half moon bay. as we go on into tomorrow, subtle changes over the next couple of days. we will see that cloud cover to kick off our sunday around the bay area. last sunday of may, we'll see 64 in oakland, 68 down here in fremont, and a little chilly down there in morgan hill, as well, with 71 degrees.

as we take it on and look at the bottlerock festival, today looks like a great day. here's the changes we're tracking for tomorrow. more cloud cover and a dip in the temperatures. because we're tracking a low that's moving into the bay area, dropping maybe even the potential of some rain. yes, you're hearing that correctly. into as far south and into areas like santa rosa, ukiah by tomorrow afternoon, even continuing the unstable weather into lake tahoe for the long holiday weekend. cool temperatures below what we should be seeing for this time of year, into the first day of june, which is thursday. we might see some more clearing and some more sunshine here in the bay area, but away from us, we're continuing with that trend of unstable weather and that rain in parts of the sierra. looking as far as our temperature outlook for the last day of may to the first couple days of june, this blue color right there is below average temperatures, which you'll see right here in san francisco with your seven-day forecast.

welcome back this morning. we have the story of a bay area mechanic driven to do the right thing when everything went wrong. garvin thomas shows us how he helped kids get to school in

time in this morning's bay area proud. >> get that on the news, right? >> reporter: jay has been fixing buses at the district for just shy of 12 years. what that means is j.r. spent a good chunk of his life underneath a school bus. this story, though, is about the time j.r. went above and beyond to keep his buses on the road. it started with a phone call on a saturday morning in november. >> the buses wouldn't start. >> reporter: j.r. asked them to check and see if a switch had been flipped in the battery compartment. only to discover the batteries were gone. >> yeah, those were gone. >> reporter: thieves climbed a fence in the yard and taken the batteries from all their buses. the clock was now ticking for j.r. >> we have to get these buses going because monday comes around, kids got to go to school. you know, we have to make this operation go. >> reporter: j.r. reached out to his usual suppliers, but they

were all closed for the weekend. in desperation, he called the o'reilly autoparts store down the street. while they didn't have any batteries for buses, they did have some connections and a desire to help. >> i said, hey, if you can make this happen, these are for the kids, they went and got batteries from different locations. >> reporter: j.r. spent the next day organizing, installing and testing the batteries so when monday rolled around, the buses were ready to roll. >> it was like, man, i felt like superman. you know, the kryptonite was not holding me down, and i was able to save 'em, you know. it was good. it felt good. >> you deserve this award, and i'm very proud. [ applause ] >> reporter: for his superhero efforts, j.r. was just recognized by the california department of education as one of their school employees of the year. the mechanic who won a race against time to keep his buses up and running. >> for me, it's a no-brainer,

[ sirens ] that car you saw before the police cars, that was the moment a spike strip stopped that car nearly 50 miles away from where the chase began. it all started just after midnight, early this morning in san jose, where police responded to calls of a car speeding down southbound 101. the california highway patrol took over the pursuit in san martin and took it all the way down to san juan bautista.

questions that are surrounding this incident to a federal level of violations. >> this all comes as the cocoa county health department is expecting lab results of soil samples to determine the extent of heavy metal poisoning in martinez and surrounding areas as far as benicia. turning now to this unofficial start of summer. we are seeing long lines at airports and traffic on the roads, which must mean americans have collectively decided that this summer is the time to get out and travel after years of covid. the big question looming over all of this is whether the nation's airlines can handle the surge after last summer's meltdowns of delays and cancellations. nbc's tom costello reports. >> reporter: from the east coast to the midwest and way out west -- >> we're really early, just to try to beat, like, all the holiday traffic. >> reporter: a record surge of post-pandemic travelers snaking

through airports. 2.6 million on thursday alone, as airlines face a big stress test. under pressure to prove they've improved after last year's summer travel mess when 45,000 flights were canceled, 22% delayed. the good news, fewer than 1% of flights were canceled. >> it's so far, so good. >> reporter: but this is just a dress rehearsal for what could be the busiest summer travel season in years. if you're traveling this summer, domestic air fare is down 20% over last year. however, if you're going international, it will cost you. the highest in five years, $1,200 for europe. $1,800 to asia. >> we have added thousands of pilots to our complement. we've also added thousands, over 22,000 in our ground operations as far as our gate agents, ticket agents. >> reporter: it's not just airlines under pressure. the faa is short some 3,000 air traffic controllers, forcing airlines to fly fewer flights

but with bigger planes to accommodate passengers. >> there's fewer air traffic controllers today than there were 30 years ago. we just have to fix that. >> reporter: that, though, will take time. >> we do need to grow our air traffic control workforce. we're doing that now, hiring like crazy. >> reporter: meanwhile, this is what happens when the cockpit door gets locked. a southwest pilot forced to climb through the cockpit window to get back inside the flight. it left on time. >> wow. tom costello reporting for us. instead of flying, you might be heading out on one of these freeways, driving today. aaa projects upwards of 37 million americans are hitting the road this weekend. the agency also is giving some advice to avoid getting stuck in traffic for hours. if you're heading out, consider waiting until after 6:00 p.m. on monday, memorial day, you might want to stay off the road between noon and 3:00 p.m. a spokesperson also points out it's actually cheaper to drive this year. >> gas prices are better this

now to members of the writers guild of america. they are continuing to protest for pay and job security. this large crowd gathered in los angeles yesterday for a solidarity rally. members are seeking higher minimum pay, more writers per show, and less exclusivity on single projects among other demands. the last hollywood strike from the same union took three months to resolve. if a strike persists through the summer, fall tv schedules could be upended. happening today, the boy scouts of america continue their memorial day tradition across the country. this was a live look at oak hill memorial park in san jose, where scouts will be placing american flags at the graves of fallen veterans in honor of their service and their ultimate sacrifice. the tribute begins at 9:30 this morning. there will be similar flag placing ceremonies at cemeteries across the bay area this weekend. these are photos from events in

you'll feel the cooldown as we go on into sunday today. definitely the warmest of this weekend. also going to be breezy at times. as we go on into tonight, we're seeing anywhere from 15 to 20 mile an hour winds. as i take it into tomorrow and give you a look, even on into your memorial day weekend plans on monday, we're staying breezy through san francisco, on into the delta. if you live on in concord, even into the altamont pass, it'll be breezy for any barbecue plans. though we will see the sunshine at times. looking at a longer range outlook, as we go on into sunday, we're tracking some rain that could develop and move far south into parts of ukiah, santa rosa. don't be alarmed if you see some of this weather. shouldn't be too long-lived, but it might bring a chance of isolated thunderstorm activity here and into the sierra. any plans you have to go up there, make sure you're staying aware and checking on traffic conditions and the weather conditions here with us tomorrow morning, as well. i'm seeing a little bit of a development in some high pressure systems that could

welcome back. a live look for you outside. roads looking good on this memorial day saturday. we want to let you know the chp is urging drivers not to drink and driver and not to speed this holiday weekend. officers are out in force for a maximum enforcement period that went into effect last night and runs through monday. last memorial day weekend, the chp made nearly 900 dui arrests statewide. have you seen this video? it shows an airplane's door wide open in the middle of a flight. a south korean tv station got this video from a passenger on

board the flight. the airline says a man opened the emergency door while the plane was some 600 feet in the sky. luckily, everyone had their seat belts on because the plane was about to land. the plane did land safely. nine people were taken to the hospital for breathing issues. the passenger who opened that door was detained. turning now to our investigative unit and a labor shortage at some pharmacies. at the same time, more mistakes with your medicine. what can you do? consumer investigator chris chmura shows how to verify your prescription. >> reporter: my investigative unit colleague candice winn reported there were 500 reports of pharmacy medication errors causing patients harm during the pandemic. knowing mistakes are up, you might want to make sure your pharmacy filling your prescription is correct.

[ sirens ] that was the moment a spike strip stopped that car nearly 50 miles away from where the chase started. it began after midnight in san jose. police responded to calls of a car speeding down southbound 101. the over the pursuit in san martin. san juan bautista, they laid the spike strip, finally stopping the car, which had reached speeds up to 100 miles an hour. after being stopped, the people in the car were forced to come out. you can see them emerging with

here in the bay area and across the country, scouts will be placing american flags at the graves of veterans at oak hill memorial park in san jose. that tribute begins at 9:30 this morning. these are photos from a 2018 event. there will be similar flag placing ceremoies across the bay this weekend. flags remain at the gravestones through memorial day on monday. we want to thank those for their ultimate sacrifice. we will never forget. and happening today, a live look at the golden gate bridge as it rings in its 86th birthday. the bridge opened to the public on may 27th in 1937. more than 10 million visitors come to see the signature international orange towers every year. today, about five times the amount of cars that crossed the bridge in 1937 cross the bridge now. cinthia has one last check of this holiday weekend forecast. >> we're so lucky to live so close to that iconic landmark,
