that would extend the debt ceiling for the next two years in exchange for a number of spending cuts. if approved by congress, this would prevent the u.s. from defaulting on its debt obligations and potentially trigger an economic catastrophe. now the deadline was originally believed to be as early as june 1. but at the end of last week, treasury secretary janet yellen said that the deadline was extended until friday, june 5th. here is what president biden told reporters about the deal that was reached >> it takes the threat of catastrophic default off the table. it protects our hard earned and historic chirecovery, and no one got everything they want it also protects key priorities and accomplishments and values that congressional democrats and i have fought long for, long and hard for >> reporter: and the deal includes a 1% cap on nondefense spending increases for the 2025 fiscal year, as well as expanded

work requirements for certain adults on food stamp programs. the work requirements were a major sticking point in the negotiation process. speaker mccarthy on sunday told reporters that this agreement will be transformational and will stop out-of-control spending >> brie, first of all, ultimately, the fate of this plan lies in the hands of congress so how have members reacted to this immigrant so far? >> well, frances, both president biden and house speaker mccarthy have expressed confidence that the plan will make it through congress with mccarthy saying that he expects 95% of house republicans to support it, while some democrats, including chair of the progressive caucus "journal of the american medical association" pramila jayapal are warning of potential pushback. house minority leader hakeem jeffries said he expects support for the plan and alsoguarantee that the u.s. will not default the bill is expected to head to
