the clouds, gradual clearing today. but we are seeing it's a very quiet morning as we start out with a live look at the golden gate bridge. a mostly cloudy morning, as well as what we're seeing in san jose. we're heading for the low 70s, but starting out at 56 degrees. during the middle of the day we'll reach the low 70s with a breezy wind, partly cloudy skies and clouds will roll in later on this evening. first pitch at oracle park, we are going to have beautiful weather for the giants game. it will be in the low 60s, but also very windy with gusts kicking up 25 to 30 miles per hour. across the bay a little later in the evening at 5:07, the a as will have their first pitch and it will be 65 degrees at about 5:07, we'll be in the mid-60s there, going into the evening seeing temperatures heading down into the upper 50s with a mostly cloudy sky. yesterday we had a disturbance develop off the coast and it was

enough to bring in some rain, especially to the north bay during the afternoon to evening hours and even some lightning strikes farther to the north. there were spotty showers elsewhere, but we're also looking at that potential that we could see a mixed bag of weather going into the next few days. as far as how much rain we typically see, heading out of may into june, we do usually get at least a little bit. but we are heading toward dryer months, july is the driest. so there's still a chance that we could see some rain especially over the sierra. as we take a look at our high temperatures for today, santa rosa reaching 71 degrees. this is like the weather over the weekend with some upper 60s and low 70s. martinez reaching 69, 73 in mountain view. we're not seeing much of a significant change for tomorrow, as well as wednesday. our temperatures are going to continue to feel nice and mild. we can continue to leave the air-conditioning off. and a lot of people will be

traveling back to the bay area or maybe heading out if you have the week off. i wanted to show you the national forecast. we are seeing some really hot temperatures across the south, but we're also seeing that up toward detroit where we're heading for 85 degrees. they've been complaining on the east coast about how cold it's been, but it will be warming up over the next few days. we are going to see more cool weather continue throughout the week. notice the green that's showing the possibility of rain daily developing for those higher elevations. and that's the pattern we've seen recently. there's still not a change, but every now and then there's a little bit of that activity that drifts over toward the bay area, and we go back to our dry conditions as well. so just a slight chance of rain for the next few days, and our temperatures only reaching into the low 70s today. it makes it up to 75 for our warmer spots inland by friday and the weekend just a touch warmer, but still feeling like

spring as we head through the rest of the next seven days. in san francisco memorial day forecast, 62 degrees, and we'll see temperatures in the low 60s as we go throughout the week. overall a quiet weather pattern, not a whole lot happening here, and not a whole lot to talk about. we'll continue to follow tha, as well as what's happening across the country. let's go back to that inland forecast for memorial day, reaching 70 degrees for today, and then 72 degrees on tuesday. by wednesday, 73 degrees, 74, 75. i mean, there's not much of a change here. we'll see a partly cloudy start to the morning and then becoming sunny as we go into the day. the weekend is looking nice and we can already start to make plans to get back out there and enjoy the mild weather we've been seeing here. looking at san francisco, there are quite a few of the memorial

day ceremonies going on, and it's going to be in the low 60s for this afternoon. also once again, we have a giants game happening for early in the afternoon, and then a little bit later across the bay in oakland. it may be busy in those areas with more people heading out during the afternoon today, the afternoon hours for today. and then tomorrow as more people are going back to work, 60 degrees and seeing a partly cloudy sky as well. starting out with clouds each and every day with highs in the low 50s. as we go into the weekend, we'll see temperatures reaching into the mid-60s. we've also been following what's been going on for the chance of showers and thunderstorms happening over the sierra. they've also had some flood warnings in effect because of the massive sierra snowmelt, and hopefully things do quiet there as well. >> kari, thanks so much. we've been advised by our

producers that we are having some minor technical problems, so bear with us if the next segment doesn't go as well as we had hoped. but assuming it does, over the weekend president joe biden announced a debt ceiling deal between the white house and congress. the bill would raise the debt ceiling to avoid a potential catastrophic default. >> "today in the bay"'s brie jackson has the latest on this developing situation. >> reporter: after weeks of slow progress, a breakthrough on debt ceiling negotiations, the white house and republicans reached a bipartisan deal over the weekend. >> the agreement prevents the worst possible crisis, a default. >> reporter: the agreement extends the government's current debt limit for two years in exchange for spending cuts. there are no changes to medicaid, but there will be work requirements for certain people on food stamp programs. a major sticking point during talks. >> it's not 100% what everybody wants, but when you look, the country is going to be stronger. this is going to be transformational.

priest, meantime, faces new accusations that he sexually abused at least six children over the span of decades, and he's continued his work as recently as last year. >> investigative reporter candice nguyen explores what happens now. >> reporter: father daniel carter was accused at least once before more than two decades ago, but a former archbishop called the allegations unfounded and allowed him to keep working. now we have found six new lawsuits accusing carter of abuse and neither he nor the archdiocese will answer our questions. >> it's just hard to talk about. >> reporter: decades later, danielle can still remember father daniel carter, even the sound of his voice. >> he was a presence at the school. >> he worked at a school she attended as a child.

she said the priest forged a bond with her entire family that transcended school walls. >> he became good friends with my father. he took a liking to me, which wasn't really a common experience for me as a child. >> reporter: one night in the late '70s, she said carter turned from a trusted family friend to her abuser. she was only # years old. >> he was over at our house having dinner and my parents were actually in the other room. i was wearing my pajamas, and he took his hand and put it up my pajama shirt and felt my chest area and then he took his hand and put it down my pajama pants and felt my bottom and vagina area. >> what was going through your mind? >> it was confusing, but i knew it was wrong. >> reporter: she carried the secret until 2002, when the clergy scanned until boston exploded and a flood of victims were reporting abuse across the

country. she had become a social worker in redwood city and said the time felt right to come forward, especially, she says, since father carter was still working as a priest for the archdiocese at immaculate heart of mary in belmont. >> you do it because of the children, because he's still a priest out there. >> reporter: in april of 2002, she says she reported her abuse directly to the archdiocese of san francisco. later that month, she filed this police report, accusing carter of molesting her as a child. then in august, she sued the church. carter was put on leave by san francisco's archbishop at the time, and the church went on to settle the lawsuit without an administration of guilt. but that does not end father carter's days as a priest. in march of 2003, archbishop laveda wrote this letter, informing the priest that the archdiocese independent review board reviewed the allegations

and had judged the allegations to be unfounded. carter was placed back into ministry. >> the father carter story i think is one of the most shameful for the archdiocese of san francisco. the archdiocese claimed that they were going to do an independent review, they did an independent review, but the only thing that was independent was the facts. >> reporter: in the two decades that followed, carter continued to work as a priest in san francisco. most recently at our lady of lords and saint paul of the ship wreck seen in this video posted in 2021. in 2022, our investigative unit told you about a new wave of accusations hitting the catholic church across california, enabled by the 2019 child venus

williams act. >> now six more people have come forward with allegations. >> reporter: we have looked at hundreds of new lawsuits and found carter's name at least a vaf dozen times. these suits accuse him of sexually abusing children, both boys and girls, at different times throughout his career from the 1970s through 2000. >> at the time these lawsuits were filed, he was still in ministry, in present day, and that is what is really, really shocking. >> reporter: the attorney is representing two of the new plaintiffs now suing the archdiocese over father carter. he says the latest allegations show carter should have been removed from ministry long ago. >> point blank, you know, this is an institution that has shown us time and time again that it cannot be trusted to self-police

itself. >> hi, father carter. >> reporter: we were able to reach father carter by phone. >> this is candice nguyen from nbc bay area. we're reaching out to a response of abuse accusations that have recently come to light and we would like to get your side of the story. >> he said no, thank you, he doesn't want to comment, and he hung up the phone. we also had some questions for san francisco's archdiocese about carter's current status as a priest and whether it stands by its 2003 decision to return him to ministry. the archbishop laveda is no longer there. he was pro noted to cardinal in 2006 and later died in 2019. a spokesperson said the archdiocese will be handling these with media channels and will not make a comment. >> i'm proud of whoever is coming forward. >> reporter: she faced backlash

for coming forward back in 2002, she's telling her story now so father carter's new accusers know she's in their corner. >> when i came forward, it was very difficult to do it alone. so i'm happy to be here to talk about it. they're not alone. >> reporter: the archdiocese would not tell us whether carter is still allowed to work as a priest, but we reviewed an updated list published by the archdiocese of priests in good standing who are able to minister, and carter's name is not on it. with the investigative unit, candice nguyen, nbc bay area news. a florida woman has been arrested after speeding down the beach over the holiday weekend, nearly hitting several families. authorities say the 26-year-old ended up plowing into the water. she admitted she was the driver, saying she was just trying to turn around and, as you might have guessed, a test revealed

that her blood alcohol level was two times the legal limit. she was charged with dui and reckless driving. it's a history-making season for the baseball teams of several bay area colleges and it's a first in san jose state history. >> in the air to center. san jose state wears the crown! >> yesterday they won the mountain west conference tournament for the first time in program history, and in the process the spartans earned a spot in their first ncaa tournament since 2002. in the title game, san jose state beat air force 12-9 in an official victory. >> those guys mean the world to this program and us, and a lot of people didn't think that this program was capable of doing this. i can't say enough good things about these guys. i love them.

over the weekend and that was more explosions and cars flipping and racing and all that stuff. it delivered. >> i feel like this is movie theatre weather for me. i don't love the 60s, so i would rather be inside. >> well, yeah, we've got more of this as we go through the week. there's really not much of a change. i think it's making us feel like, what season is this? usually it's a lot warmer and we're only talking about highs in the 60s and 70s, not only today, but the rest of the week and into the weekend. it's only just slightly warmer with a mix of sun and clouds. right now as you get ready to head out, the temperature is at 56 degrees in palo alto and 51 right now in martinez. great day for a hike, especially this afternoon, with the cooler weather we are seeing more people heading out and about and also dealing with all of the pollen in the air as well. so looking at our east bay hiking forecast, it's going to be all clear and sunny by 11:00 to 1:00, and then just a few clouds dotting the sky as we

reach into the upper 60s in much of the east bay. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, as we see once again a steady temperature as we go through at least monday through friday, and then by saturday and sunday it's just a touch warmer. we're going to reach 73 degrees in san jose today, and about the same tomorrow, with oakland reaching 66 degrees, 62 in san francisco, and also the cool weather near the coastline will remain. now, checking out the sierra snowpack, it's been pretty amazing to see that we're still four times the formal amount in the southern sierra. but it is melting. and not only that, but we've also seen thunderstorms firing up over the tahoe region. so that will be the case again today, as well as tomorrow. maybe a little dryer on wednesday. our weather pattern across the region remains the same, and we, once again, have seen showers and thunderstorms developing there for the higher elevations. every now and then some of that

drifts into the bay area and that's what we saw yesterday afternoon, with the mixed bag of weather we had. but we're looking at some nice and mild weather throughout the next several days. back to you. >> thanks. we have a follow-up this morning. we may have found out what sparked a small fire at a campground near the bottlerock festival. it happened early friday morning. our investigative reporter candice nguyen was there. she found out it was a car that burned after a charging device overheated. staff members at the campground did confirm that. a family member of the two people inside that burning car say they both made it out okay and no one else was hurt. >> the three-day event wrapped up last night. lizzo rocked wine country, making history as the festival's first black female headliner. ♪♪

happening all across the bay area. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thank you so much for starting your monday with us. i'm kira klapper. >> i'm scott mcgrew. laura and marcus both have the day off. kari does not. she's working double duty for us. it is a lovely forecast. >> it is a nice forecast. so far it's been nice and quiet also in the traffic department, which i'm taking over as well. it's been also a smooth flow. let's get a live look outside in dublin where there's going to be a lot of people out there on 580 heading to the outlets, trying to catch some of those memorial day sales. but, also, we have a lot of ceremonies going on around the bay area and we're starting out cloudy. we're headed for the low to mid-70s this afternoon, partly cloudy skies. we can see the trend as we go toward 11:00, we're at 63 degrees and reaching the peak of temperatures around 2:00 to 3:00 today. in san jose it will reach 73 degrees, and we're also going to see upper 60s and low 70s, very

much like the weather we've seen over the past few days where our temperatures are cooler than normal. so i'll have a look at that and what to expect over the next several days coming up in a few minutes. new overnight, san francisco police are investigating a shooting outside of a mission bay hotel. it's clear some of the shots chattered the windows at the luma hotel. police tell a photographer at the scene that one person was shot and hospitalized. a hotel worker tells us he heard multiple round fired around midnight, but so far police are not releasing any information. and today we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as memorial day celebrations and ceremonies are happening all across the bay area. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live at the presidio in san francisco, with more on the annual traditions set to begin. good morning, ginger.

>> reporter: good morning, scott and kira. you can see the beautiful flags are out and they're lining the street here as you enter the national cemetery of san francisco here at the presidio. we actually just saw a couple people coming in not too long ago, one of the early visitors to the cemetery, to pay their respects to some family members. there's just going to be one of many who will be visiting the national cemetery later this morning for the big event. what to expect, there will be some music, a formal program, and a gold star family wreath presentation, as well as a flyover by the coast guard air station san francisco. this is one of, as i mentioned, the largest memorial day e vepts not just in the bay area, but the state. throughout the weekend the bay area had a number of events commemorating our fallen soldiers, including this one at land's end yesterday, where hundreds gathered for a somber ceremony put on each year by the

uss san francisco. that ship was part of the most significant fighting in the pacific during world war ii, including the battle of guadalcanal. 100 sailors and seven marines were killed in action there in 1942. yesterday's ceremony was also honoring the last surviving member of the uss indianapolis, which was torpedoed in 1945. harold bray was seated in the chair of honor this year. he was one of only 316 men from the crew of almost 1,200 to survive the attack. an organizer of the event spoke on the importance of events such as this. >> the heroes that fought in world war ii, most of them are gone, and it's up to the family and friends to keep their memory alive. that's why we continue to put this event on every year, to draw attention to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

>> reporter: the ceremonies here will begin at 11:00 this morning. also happening, there will be a meditative concert at the chapel at the presidio that happens around 1:30. we'll be following that, as well as other ceremonies and commemorative events happening throughout the bay area. >> wow, it looks like a beautiful morning to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. thank you so much. walnut creek will host a ceremony in civic park that will include remarks by the mayor and an address by an army veteran, followed by a procession across the street to the veterans memorial outside of city hall. portions of north broadway street will be closed during the procession that begins at 10:00 this morning. we are learning more about a man who drowned saturday afternoon at lake del valle in livermore. he has been identified as 26-year-old daniel cullison. his family provided these photos for us and tell us he will be

dearly missed. investigators say he jumped into lake del valle to get an oar that dropped from the family boat but never came back up. divers rescued his body several hours later. as summer approaches, park police urge you to wear a life jacket when in or near the water. happening tomorrow, disgraced theranos founder and convicted felon elizabeth holmes is expected to surrender herself and begin her federal prison sentence. this comes after a judge rejected her bid to remain out of prison while she attempts to overturn her conviction on four felony counts of fraud and conspiracy. a judge has recommended sending holmes to a minimum security women's prison camp in texas near her hometown of houston. according to that prison's orientation handbook, holmes can expect a 6:00 a.m. wake-up call, all able inmates are assigned to a job, earning between 12 cents

and $1.15 an hour. new this morning, california's great snowmelt has some people believing they can strike it rich. long-time gold hunters in the sierra especially optimistic. that's because at least some of them are convinced with this winter's heavy rain and snowfall, more rushing water will lead to a gold rush, that's because the movement of more boulder and sediment could bring up new gold from the bottom of waterways. but still some dedicated old-timers say don't make that the reason you're trying, because the real reason is just in the chase. >> it's a tight group of people, all out here for the same thing. >> if you're thinking you're going to come up here and find gold, don't even bother. i've known guys that come up here and dig all day and they don't find anything. >> you're just supposed to enjoy the hunt. we should point out these guys never revealed their exact location. but one nearby gold buyer says

there hasn't been any greater numbers of people coming in to sell gold this season, at least not so far. 6:38 this morning, a massive wildfire is burning in nova scotia, canada. meteorologist kari hall joins me in the newsroom with the impact. is it impacting us in the northern u.s. as well? >> not as of now. but some of that smoke was drifting toward the east coast. we have new video this morning. the roads are affected with smoke and flames, making driving very hazardous in the city of halifax, they declared a state of emergency there late last night after the wild fair caused evacuations and power outages. people are dealing with power and cell outages, and this month the western province of alberta declared a state of emergency after tens of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes, as unprecedented wildfires continued to rage. and as we take a look at what we're expecting here, it's been

fairly quiet, but hopefully we don't see any kind of activity like that. we'll continue to monitor, as we've seen even above-normal rainfall. so hopefully that holds things off. we've also had a lot of pollen floating through the air. it is allergy season and the peak is showing that olive and oak is really affecting us, with a high amount of pollen right now. and grasses are also moderate, mold is low on the pollen count. but a really nice memorial day to enjoy some of the state parks that are free for veterans today. in the east bay, we're looking at our forecast starting out cloudy, temperatures in the mid-50s, headed for the upper 60s for today, as we will get some clearing for the middle of the day. here is a look at all of our microclimates with our high temperatures reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. 71 today in dublin and 68 in oakland. we'll also reach a high of about 68 degrees in napa this afternoon, and about the same temperatures tomorrow as well, as more people are heading back

to work. if you're going to work this morning, i wanted to show you that mass transit is running a sunday schedule for b.a.r.t. and that starts at 8:00 this morning. so still a little bit of time. if you will have to drive this morning, we are also seeing there is a smooth flow of traffic on all of our roadways. here is a live look at san rafael, highway 101, that's looking pretty good. and they haven't had to turn on the metering lights at the bay bridge toll plaza because there's such a light flow of traffic. we're seeing that on the san mateo bridge, a lot of people observing the memorial day holiday. we've seen some minor incidents around the bay area, most of them not on the interstates. except for this one that's on highway 101 as you're moving through petaluma, possibly seeing an impact there as people are being rerouted over here on some of the side streets. so we'll continue to monitor for that. kira and scott. >> good thing there are so few people on the road this morning. kari, thanks. movies and favorite tv shows

cemetery on this memorial day. last week members of the armed forces placed american flags, you can see them in the front there, at each of the more than 228,000 headstones in the cemetery. the operation was conducted by the third u.s. infantry regimen known as the old guard and that tradition dates back to 1948. for many who planted the flags, this tradition symbolizes something greater than themselves. the flags will be there several days after memorial day. this morning one lucky dog is accomplishing something some humans never will. we head for the '60s and low 70s across the bay area. more mild weather for the weekend, but it may be warmer in some spots. let's get a look at our outlook for san jose. we're in the mid-50s, heading there for the 8:00 to 9:00 hour. it's going to be mostly cloudy. by 11:00, we're seeing a lot more sunshine. going into the day with a sunny sky, and our temperature peaking at 73 degrees today. it will be cooler for the first pitch for the giants game in the early afternoon hours, so we'll be at about 62, 63 degrees and really windy. check out those wind gusts picking up to about 25 miles per hour. a little later in the evening, we have the a's game, that first pitch at 5:07. it will be 65 degrees and partly cloudy, also pretty gusty. and it's going to be chilly as we go into tonight, as our temperatures drop back to the upper 50s once again. yesterday was so interesting to see the mixed bag of weather we had, especially in the north bay. there was a little disturbance off the coast that was enough to

develop some showers and some lightning farther to the north for lake and mendocino counties. we also had some spotty rain moving through parts of the east bay, elsewhere rain that passed through, and there's a chance we could see that kind of weather as we go into june, as we do typically trend a little dryer, but we've seen such active weather across the region. we'll see more of that over the next several days. overall heading for the 60s and low 70s, and not seeing a significant change in temperatures, as we see storms developing over the upper elevations for the sierra. we're going to see that into the rest of the week, as well as the weekend. people there have really seen some interesting weather with thunderstorms that have you quickly running inside and seeking some shelter. we're going to see temperatures in the 60s and 70s, with mainly mid-70s for the inland areas with sunshine. the weekend is looking beautiful

with upper 70s in the forecast and our mornings starting out in the low 50s. if you are heading to work this morning, let me get you a look at drive times for contra costa county. kirker pass road takes you about 20 minutes, it is slowing just a little bit. elsewhere the flow of traffic has been so light as we take a live look outside in san jose. we are not seeing anything happening at the interchange, but a couple of minor incidents, mainly off of the main stretches of the roadways. so your bridge drive times are looking really good, you can maybe leave later because there isn't a big backup. >> i like that idea. it is just about 6:53. happening now, state and local fire agencies are applauding a decision allowing firefighters to continue using chemical retardant to battle wildfires. environmentalists sued the u.s. forest service arguing it pollutes waterways, but a montana judge on friday ruled

francisco hotel. >> it happened around midnight in the city's mission bay neighborhood. you can see in this video a lot of police activity and chattered windows at the luma hotel. police say one person was shot and hospitalized and in the last few minutes, police tell us so far no arrests have been made. now what comes what everybody hopes is the easy part for president joe biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy after the two reached a deal to solve the debt limit crisis. the agreement would extend the debt limit through 2025 and includes a wide array of spending cuts. analysts say some funding for the irs would be allocated to other areas and it includes greater restrictions on federal food assistance. but all medicaid benefits have been spared. both congressional houses now have to pass the deal before the june 5th deadline to avoid default. the house is expected to vote first this wednesday. parking meter hours in san francisco will remain as is for

the time being. most city meters are enforced 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. monday through saturday but the sfmta wants to extend parking hours to 10:00 p.m. on those days. sundays are friday, but they want to start charging to park on sundays from noon until 6:00. the agency says that will generate $20 million in revenue, but sf supervisors first want an economic impact study to ensure that what goes into the meters doesn't come at the expense of local businesses. that study is expected by september. all of america pausing today to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. this is a live look at the national cemetery in san francisco's presidio. it is set to open later this morning. people will gather for the annual wreath-laying ceremony and a presentation for gold star families. the coast guard air teams will do a flyover as well. >> what a beautiful place to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
